    Just as a matter of info, I saw another video that recommended that when you open a laptop, the way to apply the most equal and least stressful pressure on the hinges is to open the lid from the center, rather than lifting at just one corner as you did at 10:33. This distributes the pressure between the 2 hinges evenly.

    This video saved my day. A few minutes ago I was replacing the thermal paste of my 7 years old HP Envy 15-j005ep and I found little bits of black plastic that I couldn't find where they were from. Well, as you may already have guessed, it was the same exact issue you had with your laptop.
    I never thought it could be glued, considering the huge amount of pressure that the hinge does, so I just started using the laptop on a fixed position and was thinking to leave it always opened.

    While demonstrating the damage to the right side hinge, you casually mentioned "this is little hard to move here". Well, yeah. Without realizing it, you discovered the underlying problem, and then completely ignored it. What has actually happened is that the lubrication in the hinges has dried and thickened over time, causing the hinges to stress the chassis mounting studs beyond their design limit when the lid is opened and closed. If you simply epoxy the hinge back in place, you've only kicked the can down the road a few blocks, and the problem will recur. The ONLY correct solution is to also lubricate the hinges with silicon spray, and then slightly LOOSEN THE CLUTCH NUTS on both hinges. That will restore the torque the hinges exert on the mounting posts to their original value (or less), and will prevent the problem from recurring after this repair has been done. NO OTHER SOLUTION WORKS PERMANENTLY. I do this kind of work full-time for a living, and learned this the hard way.

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  6 лет назад +6

      I agree that lubing and torquing the hinge is a great idea and should be done in conjunction with the epoxy - thanks for the tip! Mine's held up fine so far and shows no signs of imminent failure without the lube/adjustment. I assume that the hinges were set correctly at the factory and tighten up with use. Do they tighten back up after being readjusted? If so, how long before they go back to being too tight?

    • @prem4302
      @prem4302 5 лет назад +7

      Maybe the hinge was difficult to move because of torque. For the same reason as it is difficult to open a door if one pushes on the surface near the hinge.

    • @tksirius
      @tksirius 5 лет назад +6

      I attempted to loosen the nuts on the hinges, but they're torqued down so much that I'm pretty sure I would've busted it up much worse if I kept on trying. Lubricating the hinges didn't seem to make much of a difference so I'm gonna assume that the amount of torque is main culprit outside of just being a crappy design.
      BTW, getting to the middle screw under the optical drive was a pain in the butt.
      Also, the screw complex under the rubber piece by the fan was broken just like @SevenFortyOne's. Found a couple tiny pieces of plastic as well. Those must have been what I heard rattle around every once in awhile.

    • @philflood3880
      @philflood3880 5 лет назад +5

      @@tksirius Yes, that screw is virtually hidden! Initially the two parts would not separate and I kept looking for another screw even with a spotlight magnifyer. I just found it by poking a jewelry screwdriver into the small hole. My case looks just like yours so I will start on the epoxying. Just hope that aster 3 weeks I can remember what I undid. I had also contacted HP for instructions on getting to that point but they were very unhelpful and just suggested that I take it to a repair shop! The HP help forum had an old thread which they said was closed, do I started a new thread and HP closed that down immrediately.
      Never again will I buy HP.

    • @chocofanatico
      @chocofanatico 5 лет назад +6

      I agree, these hinges are so damn stiff, that the screws eventually just pull out of the plastic, terrible design. I don't see any screws on the hinge on my 17" Envy, are they inside looking in from the center of the laptop? It's tough to see since there's a cable running in there. I guess I'll just try lubricant from both sides and see if I can loosen it. I did a similar repair to the video using Loctite plastic bonder, the kind that sets in 20 min, and in 2 days it just pulled away from the plastic. The glue I used was thicker though, maybe had thickened with age and wasn't as effective. Going to try JB Weld Plastic bonder next, hopefully that will be strong enough.

    When I called HP about both broken hinges I was told they couldn't help me. They would not even refer me to a trusted repair provider. Now I see that this has been an ongoing problem for several years. When you pay $800 for a laptop you expect it to last a few years. Mine went just out of the 1 year warranty. Class action comes to mind.

  • @dw2476
    @dw2476 7 лет назад +7

    First of all... thank you. I did this repair to my HP Envy 17" laptop. Be careful though... when putting in the epoxy, I went a little bit too liberal and it leaked down below to where the power button is (used large craft popsicle stick). Coudn't start up computer. Disassembled and carefully scraped it all clear. Reapplied the epoxy making sure that it did not go down to the board below by using another popsicle stick and scraping what dripped down for about 5 minutes until it set up -- not fully cured just not soft or dripping. Everything is working now!!
    As a side note, my laptop is about 2.5 years old and the plastic is EXTREMELY brittle. I had 3 screws break loose and some plastic break off when I lightly bumped the case. I think it is a problem with the manufacturing material but I am out of warranty, even extended by my credit card.

      Update: my laptop hinge broke again.... same one. More plastic from the manufacturer broke off so the epoxy had nothing to hold on to. Currently scraped off old epoxy and will reset it again. Cheaply manufactured case and/or hinge that uses too much pressure.

    Thanks for your easy to watch, enjoyable and eminently informative video, in which you confidently tutor the technically ignorant (myself) with a clarity and confidence that's rare amongst the plethora of "how to fix it" movies on RUclips.
    My HP Envy dv7- 7338ea was just 2 years old when the insidious creaking of the left-side hinge developed into loud gut-wrenching cracks upon opening or closing. As it was only just "out of warranty", I was very disappointed by HP's indifference to my problem, especially as this was a relatively expensive model costing £1600 in 2014. Nevertheless, I soldiered on for a few weeks until bits of the plastic base began to break off and the top cover moved up and down in sympathy with the hinge movement. Replacement bases for this model are as rare as rocking horse droppings and when I eventually saw one on eBay (China) for an extortionate £600, I reluctantly bought a new laptop (not HP), retiring this unsaleable one to the attic, where it would have eventually decomposed until I saw your enlightening video. Bravo!
    Incidentally, I learnt that HP computers are no longer imported from the USA but China! Oh, the times they are a-changin'!

      @@SevenFortyOne I have a 13 year old HP laptop that's still going strong! They used to make these things solid, but have really gone downhill. Not sure any of these laptops made in China are much better though, I had a Lenovo a few years ago that was kind of a piece of junk, I've seen other brands with the hinge problem too. I did notice the new HP Spectre's have a much lighter and smoother hinge, barely holds the screen up at some angles. Guess they finally learned something.

    Just a thought- when opening/closing a laptop lid, try to avoid doing so by lifting/pressing at the corner or side. Hold the lid at the centre, this will even out the torque across both hinges.

    This pissed me off to no end. I've had a few HP Pavilions over the years. Loved them. I finally decide to "step up" to the better HP laptop and got my Envy m7-j120dx. The first time I ever purchased extended warranty for anything! After a year I realized what everyone here realized....this thing is closing weird. Then I looked at the sides and saw the separation. WTF? I called HP. They said that the damage was from misused and not covered. I don't know if I've ever been more angry. I made them give me my money back on the extended warranty. They preferred that "solution" to just fixing the laptop! New palm rests for these cost $140-260+ so I guess they still came out on top. I can't wait to try this epoxy fix!

    This is only a temporary fix, I tried this first, after time it broke again, then I tried plastic welding the gold nuts in, and believe me it was difficult to get the broken epoxy out before I could plastic weld, after more time the whole plastic frame broke so I pastic welded and rebuilt the whole frame. But then it broke again so I just drilled a hole straight through the case and fastened the hinge with a screw and nut. Now that part of the hinge is secured, the top cover is breaking. The cause is that the hinges are designed to fail - how many of you just go out and buy another when it breaks right? Over time the hinges cease up causing the plastic to fail, it's a very clever design fault which I believe is intentional, it has happened on all 3 of my HP's. Before the top cover started breaking I lubed up the hinges and let them off a bit, but they still ceased up again, they would benefit from a delrin washer... good luck, don't waste your time with an epoxy temporary fix.

    I did something similar. I believe that the weak part of the epoxy repair is that epoxy can slide out of the holes and chassis assembly. Epoxy gets hard, but it doesn't stick to slick, plastic surfaces very well. A more flexible, more adhesive solution, imho, is E6000/Goop/Shoe Goo. Also, I unscrewed the brass inserts, and I applied Goop not only where you applied the epoxy, but also a glob on top of the hinge flap, and then I put the screws back into the original holes, without the inserts. The threads of the screws set in the Goop allows for a good grip when pulling against the chassis. I would be afraid of the epoxy brittleness to release during temperature changes when the hinge, plastic chassis and the epoxy expand and contract at different temperatures, sort of a 'walking' effect that occurs with BMW magnesium engines. The GOOP is much more forgiving, and will give a more of a hard rubber effect upon completion. But, please emphasize... LONG DRYING TIME!!! Getting in a hurry doesn't work out well. Great video, I'm very inspired by your work, AWESOME JOB!!!

    • @trickstarjimmy
      @trickstarjimmy 7 месяцев назад

      I opened my HP Envy 15, and discovered that all of the risers had crumbled, leaving the screw inserts floating around in the chassis. Not enough left to do anything with. Here's what I did: I disassembled the laptop, and I cleaned it out really thoroughly. Then, I put GOOP/E6000 in the places where the hinges laid flat. Then, I put the small screws into the holes that they originally were in, and added more E6000 on top of the screws. Then, I attached the bottom, and I pushed the screws into the glob of adhesive. Basically, glued that area of the bottom to the chassis. Tried to avoid the moving areas, and left it, closed, lid down, to dry for 24 hours. 72 hours is even better, but I have a lot of experience with E6000, and I could feel that it was set enough to handle. This repair WORKED! But, you have to use some common sense while doing it.

      I'm not sure if either of those things would be strong enough. They may work for a while and then over time the bond may break again. The two part epoxy is fairly cheap (about $5 or $6 for a tube like mine) and can be found anywhere from hardware stores to Wal-Mart or even ordered on-line.

    Give it another 50 or so openings & closings, I guarantee that those brass inserts will start pulling out of that epoxy, and you'll have a double mess on your hands. What you should have done, is removed the screws & the brass inserts, and get rid of them ! And drilled down though those hinge screw-down bosses & holed your way all the way through to the face of the laptop & "thru-bolted" those hinges down w/some 1/8' x 3/8 " bolts to & thru the mid-plate & thru the face of the laptop ! Sure, you'll have the bolt heads visible on the face of your laptop, even near the Power On/Off button, but the screen will still close properly, and you'll have a bulletproof repair. Trust me, I GUARANTEE you, that that Epoxy will fail. I performed this exact same hail-mary of a repair, and it lasted for a while, but I ended up performing surgery by drilling through & through-bolting the hinges down permanently ! It works slick as shit to this day ! You see, epoxy & hardware, hardware that has a lot of stress on it, never works. Well, it will for a while until the actual union of the hardware & the epoxy weakens. The cause of of these broken hinge mounts, is two fold. The hinges dry out, and become very dry & STIFF. So they are very difficult to open & close. So, the stress from the dry hinges gets put upon the mounts ! the screws & the plastic-bosses that surround the brass-nuts ! And the weakest link breaks 1st. So, the FIX for this is to catch it BEFORE it gets worse by LUBRICATING THOSE HINGES !!!! As soon as you feel the lid opening & closing w/more resistance, LUBRICATE THE HINGES !!!

      Can you show any pictures of how you drilled and refastened the hinge plates with deeper screws? I'm concerned that if they go through the face of the laptop they will damage the screen when the laptop is closed. I agree that the epoxy is not going to sustain, but I haven't seen any tutorials for placing deep screws

Never close lid now, except to take apart, as I put a new mbd into it! I see on Ebay Chinese replacement bottom plates, 50 bucks or so, but absent the metal screw seats, no idea but epoxy about how to get them in a replacement bottom plate. Curses, HP! I will leave mine as is for now as I'm using an external monitor. The new mbd fixed a bigger prob, bad SD card reader, and 2nd mbd allowed a Win 10 pro install. Other than hingeastrophe, I love mine. I would just like to add, for anyone coming to this video - the problem is that the lubricant in HP hinges on the HP Envy hardens over time and can cause the laptop hinges to become extremely stiff. This will cause the laptop hinges to put undue stress on the top laptop cover and the laptop base. Those parts are both plastic and they will break under the stress of the hinge. This will cause the plastic pieces to break. HP knows about this and issued a very low-key recall for some of the Envy laptops, but not all that were covered by this issue. If you don't move your computer a lot, you may not notice this issue at all. To repair this issue, you have to lubricate and loosen the hinges. If your laptop has already broken, you can order a bottom plate from eBay or a back cover (those will be the likely ones to break) and then disassemble your laptop, oil and loosen the hinges and then put it all back together. We should all get together and sue HP for this foolishness, but in case you don't have time for that and just need to get back to work on your laptop, taking it apart, lubing the hinges with silicone grease, loosening the hinges and then putting it all back together will make your world right again.
    Darn HP for not just being honest and fixing the issue for everyone!

      @@SevenFortyOne My workaround is a bungee cord, mine is 2 feet or so, wrapped around a busted laptop cooling base not flat on the bottom. Else you attach eyelets for the bungee. A 1/4 inch thick bungee has enough gap to be able to power on, and stick the power cord in the right side, but stresses the DVD bay so I have to leave that open a bit & can't easily close. Yes this fix is jerry-rigging, not as elegant as the epoxy rig. The bungee keeps separation of the damaged bottom plate almost nul so long as display stays 90-95 degrees open. Some other kind of strapping is also an option. Because of the torque you may have to secure the front of the laptop to prevent it tipping backwards, I just use a piece of masking tape at the front. This is my desktop replacement and I use an external monitor and keyboard, but don't have to.

    So you've decided to forego worrying about replacing the battery or RAM or HD? Must be nice.
    I have a 15ay039wm with the exact same hinges. The layout is different, though. Different motherboard, RAM position, etc. My busted hinge is on the left side, where the power socket is, and where there's also wires to the wi-fi chip and for the LCD!
    Mine was busted from opening the case because a Winduhs update kept the HD spinning like a meat slicer for hours on end. I replaced it with an SSD, so here I am (11-5-18) with the hinge problem. Microsoft needs to pay for another laptop because of the "update" which is documented as destroying thousands of hard drives of other users.
    And HP needs to have trap doors for easy access to the hard drive and RAM. We're running out of landfills needlessly because of such Planned Obsolescence insanity.
    And if I manage to get this problem "fixed", the lid likely won't ever be folded down and the laptop likely won't leave the house ever again.
