- We're finally revisiting SFV and once again it's to look at something that you can't play as in the final game, but rather than your typical NPC, today we're breaking down Abigail as he appeared in Season 3, or the initial release of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition!
While this version of the character wasn't in the game for very long, he's a strong contender for the absolute best character the game has ever seen, being incredibly overtuned in Season 3 despite not appearing to be a weak character in his debut season.
In this video, I'll be breaking down what made him so absurd at the time, and then we'll turn to how he was nerfed in the game's later balance patches. This turned out to be much longer than expected, but I hope you enjoy regardless!

Maybe Abigail got so many initial buffs because the dev team felt bad about making him tall enough to take all 30 hits of Raging Demon directly to the crotch.

Do big body enjoyers even like the guy? He feels like the absolute apex of the SF (4 and 5 in particular) trend of making the large men jokes with nothing else going on. Glad they gave Zangief his stage presence in SF6.

@@arachnofiend2859 I generally like "big body" characters, but Abigail is easily my least favorite design in the entire franchise for various reasons. He's basically like if they made Hugo even more dumb and then made said dumbness even more unfunny. (Being better than poor Zangief for almost the entirety of _SFV_ until the last season just rubbed salt in the wound even as someone who never got to touch the game.)

The reason Abigail is not in sf6 is because he transformed into the workshop present in the world tour mode. That means you can be inside him

it's a universal problem with sf5 hitboxes/hurtboxes.even way before abimagail there were many normals that visually connected with a model yet didn't hit because of their actual hitboxes being shorter (like a lot of lows). that's one of the reasons normals felt so stubby.
Abigail got to feel like he truly was a car with how he simply ran over everyone else, his ultimate victory
Using Streets of Rage music for a Final Fight character is very thematic, not just because both are beat-em-ups, but because I feel like this version of Abigail probably made a lot of people rage.
One part of me is saying “Jesus fuck this is broken”, but the other part of me is just “hehe big guy go brrrrrr”.

SFV just did that. Any time Rashid looked down he would give himself an accidental heart surgery with his beard.
Just kind of used to it with _SFV_ sadly, especially give eldritch horror posing as Necalli's dreadocks that ended up being more intimidating than the waste of the character himself.
Abigail was the reason i got back into watching SFV tourneys. In a game full of martial arts and crazy techniques, a giant of a man who throws you up and lets gravity do the rest was funny af to watch.

Honestly, the fact that Capcom got Xander Mobus to ham it up to eleven as Abigail is literally what made this character one of my favorites in SFV, balancing issues aside. Dude was *clearly* having a great time recording his lines.

Sentinel and Blitztank absolutely compete in just how ginormous they are though, especially sentinel who had to be massively downscale from it's portrayal in the comics.

Do you think someone in the SFV team got really angry that people hated Abigail, so they overtuned him to hell just so people could remember him as a legit force instead of a joke?
I just find it funny to picture some higher up just fuming that no one respects Abigail. So they patch him to be the dumbest top tier of all time.

I am sure this is what happened, myself.
It would be funny, but realistically it was most likely an issue of underestimation. When the dev team looked at Abigail at the end of Season Two they probably saw a dumpster fire that was never going to be relevant regardless of what they did to buff him. You have to think, characters like this had almost always been forgotten bottom tiers (worth noting that all of this happened at the peak of Tekken 7's "buff Gigas" debate). Nobody really played Abigail because of his controversial release either so its not like his results were all over the place.
Season 2 Abigail was great, but the design process of season 3 Abigail gives me the vibe that they were saying "It's not like he's ever gonna be tournament viable or anything. We might as well give him some stuff to do so more people atleast try him." I wouldn't be suprised if they had more buffs ready to go if people still weren't playing him

Request to Capcom: new Capcom vs. SNK crossover in the style of MvCI, and make sure both Abigail and Earthquake are on the roster.

@@Krakenburgvortex79 As someone who initially disliked Rufus but grew to like him as a goofball character, I definitely wouldn't mind him back even though it would be rubbing salt in Ken's JP-induced wounds at this point story-wise. If anything though, then that would make his return funnier, especially since I could see him somehow confusing JP for Ken given his face blindness is that bad.
I wouldn't mind Hakan coming back either, but gods he needs at least a few improvements in his normal, unoiled form if he does. Playing unoiled Hakan feels almost as limited as normal mode A.B.A. in _Accent Core_ given how awkward the guy is, and even A.B.A. doesn't have to choose between "become a better character" or "keep hitting and applying pressure to the opponent" like he always did.

@@PhazoGanonThere's a dustloop page for Boss Nago if youre interested but TL;DR every single one of his specials is buffed beyond belief, with completely invincible crossup Fukyo, invincible cancellable DP, Beyblade that gave a +112 HKD on hit, insanely sized normals with massive damage all for the no cost. If you spam Fukyo you can be completely invincible for the entire game.

It's really cool seeing discussion on now unplayable patch states of games. People forget how much a single bad patch or overpowered character/strategy can mess things up once they've been fixed.

Haven’t watched this video but Abigail is hilarious to me because he is the epitome of “I’m only playing him because he’s top tier.”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many drop a character so quickly after they fell out of favor in the tier lists. Absolutely NO ONE* actually liked this character but he was absolutely everywhere… until he was nowhere. The moment he was no longer top 5 people slammed him into a dumpster and never looked back.
*I actually knew a guy who genuinely liked Abagail (he was a huge Final Fight fan who loved playing big bodies) who still played him even after he fell out of favor.
What are you talking about? Itazan was on a tear with him after the nerfs because Zangief was still unplayable garbage and like all big bodies, it was a frequent opponent in ranked

Android 16 was everywhere in the early Season of Dragon Ball FighterZ and dropped to pretty much nobody using him after he was nerfed.

45:50 What's funny is that Abigail DID have an extremely fucked up hard knockdown setup into a VT1 unblockable that went completely unmentioned. If you were able to land a crumple starter with VT1 available, he could do a specific juggle into only the 1st hit of the run flip, which would force a hard knockdown that left Abigail point blank and with enough advantage to land a full charged stand heavy punch

I can't believe I've never seen that that's vile, I dug around for old setups but outside of the 1st hit Abigail Punch with VT2 bug I pretty much just found stuff that hinged on them not quick rising so that's awesome

1:44 The reception wasn't just bad on its own, it also had to stand alongside BBTAG getting announced in general and Geese getting announced for Tekken 7, both of which got very LOUD pops for them. Like the contrast between those 2 and Abigail was almost comically dire.

Abigail’s design is, in a word, preposterous. His model blocks out his own UI.
IMO there is certain charm in it. Towering over every other character in the game (including sagit), making gief and birdie look like dwarfs, using ceiling as a part of his super. His height was not a problem, his proportions were. If he was closer to his pre-release art (way less bulky) and had his costume 2 color scheme as a default (white top, blue jeans), i think the reception would've been much better.
@@aadaaadasda9979 Abigail using the ceiling is pretty cool, but a character should never block the UI, even if it's charming. When he's walking forward you literally can't see his stun bar. It's ridiculous.
And even worse, if you're cornered against him during certain animations you can't even see YOUR OWN stun bar.

The name Abigail is a neat little heavy metal reference. Abigail (the street fighter character) wears face paint similar to the face paint King Diamond (the vocalist) wore in the 80s and one of King Diamond's (the band) biggest albums is the 1987 album Abigail.

honestly, I never took this game seriously when I played it, but I found his moves and the fact he pretends to be a car to be hilarious. and I will die on this hill.
The production value on the editing in this is much higher than usual. If you're being held hostage by Core-A Gaming say "Gayming" two times quickly.

I could gush all day about how much I love everything about Abigail. I love his big dumb goober personality, I love his giant freakazoid design, I love his simple yet difficult to master gameplay, I love his whole kit and playstyle, I even love his silly maple leaf hair. I love being a big dumb idiot as a playstyle where I get to play mind games and punish mistakes. I love grappling and zoning at the same time. I love how big and meaty his hits feel. I love that he has a parry. His combos are so badass. He's basically the perfect character for me.
competing in guilty gear, the whole section on risk reward just reminds me of this seasons goldlewis, where any one mistake and you explode, and even doing well you are building him full resources to skip the screen so you can explode. If you want to do anything at all in neutral, even block - wild assault then start dying as he chips you heavily/eats your gauge and then goes for a high low with prc fuzzy.
Abigail having a two bar Vtrigger was one of the most psychotic decisions capcom ever made. That being said, as much as I hated being on the receiving end of Abi's nonsense, I always got a huge laugh out of watching him absolutely delete players. I love this stupid ass character, hated fighting him, but as long as I wasn't the one dealing with him he was was a great time.
Man looking back at SF5 you could tell how much they wanted this game to be the FINAL instalment of Street Fighter. Bringing back classics with a sleek, modern design while also respecting their origins, the whole mantra of "RISE UP" which I still love to this day, and the amount of balancing that it went through over the course of its lifespan. Hell, even the V-Gauge looked like it was supposed to fit the "RISE UP" mentality of the game - overcoming hardships, returning to the top, etc. I know SF6 is more well received in terms of it being an actual game, but I just *adore* the aesthetics of SF5.
Yeah, a shame that Capcom rather botched the story overall on that front then, especially when it comes to how Bison was defeat and when it comes to the entire character of Necalli. Such wasted potential.

That's only made more aggravating by Capcom still being completely ambiguous on Gouken's situation--unless I missed something--after having him show back up in _SFIV_ only to do...nothing(ness) and then not show up again afterwards. Even now I'm unsure if Gouken is supposed to be actually alive again now via retcon or is just some type of weird ghost given the complete lack of reaction and comment to his "revival" in _SFIV_ during every character's few interactions with him. Just feels absurd that the guy who more or less Ryu's father showing up again was made such a nonevent even to Ryu himself after being thought to be dead.
The story of _SFV_ feels like it only had Karin coming out of it positively since so many other people get screwed over or made ineffectual, especially poor Chun-li whom Capcom didn't even let really fight Bison before Ryu stepped in and Deus Ex Machina'd his current body. Meanwhile she ends up stuck dealing with lethal-ish joke villain F.A.N.G. before Rashid steals her thunder there too and gets to see the man she maybe loved, Charlie, die for a second time to no avail again. Sucks to be her in that story.
A lot of fighting game developers overestimate big body characters. This time, they underestimate them once

1:17 for someone who has never played any street fighter game after the third, seeing GILL on C TIER got me in shock. what the fuck did they do to him
Basically Gill had some of the highest damage and disgusting mix in the game thanks to his unique retribution system but unfortunately it wasn't something he could always take advantage of and he had serious weaknesses to compensate. His mobility was quite poor, he struggled to open people up, and his buttons weren't fantastic. He was situationally absurd but he struggled a lot outside of that

I feel like alot of people, including myself, slept on him during S2 and then he got more attention after Coolkid showed what we was capable of against Wolfkrone. Honestly speaking, he didn’t need to be buffed in S3 but it was like someone at Capcom saw how lukewarm he was received at his EVO reveal and was ,”okay, bet”. I was kinda forced to switch to him after they nerfed Gief during that time
Absolutely love him, but for me, he’s just almost unplayable in his current state after all the nerfs he got and especially his nitro run. Yeah, I wish he never got buffed in the first place lol. Grateful for the memories tho; I nearly won a tourney with him in S3 and fully expected the crowd to boo me but actually cheered for me cause of his outrageous damage. Meant alot too cause this was like a week after my mom had died so, really appreciated that…
I think he’s just too complicated of a character to balance “right’ for him to return SF6 because I know people will complain about him in the end and I’m content with either Hugo or Sodom (long overdue) as the Mad Gear boss to return instead.

Awesome video tho. I do really miss Abigail. He was my ride or die since his release. I had dropped Birdie for the Abi baby. And y'know, despite Abigail being my main and strongest character, I'd say he's my 2nd fav character in the game, with G being 1st, and thats only because I love G's personality and quotes a bit more.

Great coverage! Abigail, alongside bosses Seth and Gill, was my favorite character from SFV, and I’m sad that Arcade Edition is when I played him the least lol. I love his goofy ass unblockable vtriggers and his fuckoff damage.
I actually have an old unfinished tier list that I made with the help of my dad (thanks dad :3) about how hard each character could hit Abigail in dick with their supers. Akuma was #1, of course. I think Karin was also up there. I'd check, but my computer had a bit of an aneurysm so I need to wait until they can transfer the old data.

The only other example I know of a grappler ever being high-tier (not even top-tier) and ruining the fun for everyone on the planet was Zangief in SFIV and that's because he's just THAT infamous, every FGC RUclipsr has talked about him at some point because how could you not.
So seeing this and being told that Abigail was just straight-up the *best* character is just instantly ringing the alarm bells, like how did we end up with the same issue but even worse?
Accent Core Potemkin was the 2nd best character in the game, though his grab had very little to do with it (looping unblockables with Giganter Kai). That version of Potemkin is basically why meter penalty after a super exists.
I'm guessing someone on the _SFV_ team just really liked this abomination and managed to convince Capcom to go overboard with him in Season 3 of the game. To add insult to injury beyond the unnecessary Alex nerfs pointed out in this video, Zangief was basically terrible through the entire lifespan of the game, and especially so against Season 3 Abigail.
I feel like all those people who cried about USFIV Gief being strong did it out of malice. In a game where Evil Ryu, Poison, AE2012 Yun, Vanilla Sagat, El Fuerte's infinite and Elena existed they took a look at the one character they likely weren't playing and said "yeah screw that character" and to this day Gief is still paying the price while Lily and Manon run wild, let alone the top tiers.
@@elneco4654 If I had to guess, I'd say the bigger problem with Gief in specific is that he's just no fun to play against. Like, everyone agrees he isn't even top-tier, just high-tier, but they HATED having to face off against him.
And you bring up Elena which has kinda the same problem; she's "merely" the second-best character - but she turned USFIV into an absolute slog and people hate that waaaaaaaaay more, for pretty obvious reasons.

One correction is that, when you say the charged punches were "unblockable," you should be saying "guard break." There's a big difference in those effects. Unblockable implies full damage whether hit or guard, whereas guard break doesn't cause damage on guard but leaves the defender in a short stunned state.
That's fair, people tended to call guard breaks 'unblockables' a lot in this game since there was nothing resembling a traditional unblockable

abigail being a low stun character always made sense to me, like he's got complete bricks for brains, i'm sure his head is more prone to denting than most. i think it's fun flavoring and having high health just always meaning you have high stun too just doesn't seem as interesting to me
I defo see it but I think if he was gonna be a low stun char then more health would be fair, it's less that he has less stun than Gief that bugs me and more that he doesn't even have more health to compensate

I played Zangief back in SFV and at the time I was a one trick pony (still am tbh). I gravitate towards grapplers in pretty much everything I play, they have a simple and consistent gameplan for the most part. I felt like branching out right around AE to learn a new game perspective and I said sure let's try this huge guy. Going all the way from Zangief to Abigail was absurd though, I felt like everything I did was so free and it made me super aware that some characters really don't have to work as hard to succeed.

I always knew abigail is massive but going from a zangief clip to a abigail clip really puts how gigantic this mf is into perspective. Great video btw! That problem vs punk clip will always be the highlight of how stressful this character was to play vs until the 3.5 patch
