Hello, old Balrog (Boxer) main here. I would like to quickly point out that 8:06 is wrong. You CAN do Dash Straight into Red Focus but ONLY with the Medium version. Medium Dash Straight had a weird change in USF4 where if it hits, you stay EXTREMELY close to your opponent, making it possible to use red focus and also allows for an extremely situational combo extension on Blanka. Now, the only other way I found to use it was with close HP and Dash Overhead (as shown in the balance patch video 9 years ago) and that's it. Otherwise, it's true. balrog's (Red) Focus is absolutely useless and super situational and that clip of PR_Balrog using it still makes me excited like a fanboy. I remember watching it live and went apeshit over it. Good video :).
The power of Elena's cuteness made her unbeatable lol If I worked for Capcom though, I'd go back and give this one last patch, turning her Spinning Beat into an Ultra, and turn Healing into her super. She'd still be top tier but healing would now be a gamble that requires sacrificing EX moves instead of a free back pocket option she has twice per round No wonder she was able to befriend Akuma, demons recognize demons
Your suggestion was the elephant in the room everyone was considering even before her official release. How on Earth the devs finalized Healing being an Ultra Combo when they are deep into the competitive scene is mind boggling. They really misjudged how hype it would be to be an easy to get Ultra.
If Elena gets to have Healing as an ultra then Yun's Genei Jin CANNOT be a super. If both attacks were ultras, at least it would be consistent! And like Elena, he's still top 5 without it, so what's the point of trying to balance him anyway?
@@iceclimberswereamistake both should be supers. Genei Jin should absolutely NOT be an ultra, the last thing we need is Yun potentially going into EX moves during Genei Jin. Decapre's Psycho Stream reminds me a lot of Potemkin's Giganter Kai, just on a much more broken character. For pot he gets to walk forward mostly unimpeded and set up a buster if the opponent gets caught. For Decapre, she gets to do whatever she wants. Anything.

As someone who’s been kind of critical of the SF series, I owe my current love fighting games to SF4 for bringing the genre back. This video was a reminder that SF4’s wild balance history was secondary to “oh shit new fighting games”
this video is fucking awesome. One minor qualm I have is that a lot of super absurd stuff about this game, like crouch tech and el fuerte for example could have had longer more in depth sections. Not trying to suggest that this 30 minute video essay needs to be longer, but maybe two separate videos with more focused content would be nice. I’m so glad that this video managed to grace my feed. I love this game to bits. Despite starting off with tekken, sf4 got me to love fighting games even more. It taught me how to properly play fighting games and showed me that there’s more to it than just KO-ing your opponent. It was because of sf4 that I got through a pretty tough part of my life, and I made quite a bit of friends at our local scene as well. This game singlehandedly changed my life, and for that, it holds a special place in my heart.
Love your videos. I can remember picking this up having never played a street fighter game and getting wrecked by Seths. I was beyond frustrated but like you said the game had some ups and downs, but was charming no matter how high my blood pressure got. Will always hold a special place in my memory.
To be honest though? I know Seth's Lightning Legs is an annoying move that has a bunch of great properties...but it is a REALLY sick combo ender, right?
Man you made such a nostalgic video with contents and properties of the game I wasnt even aware of despite playing for it. Loved the content, take my sub!
absolutely amazing video. Even as someone who knows only the basics of SF4, having entered the genre more seriously after it was already overshadowed by V5, i found it easy to understand and appreciate every detail given. I would absolutely love to see more videos like this, probably shorter, for specific characters! going over what makes them great, what makes them bad, or what makes them stack up against the rest of the cast!
as someone who played this game religiously with cody, many memories and some ptsd came back around xD, in all seriousness, you explained perfectly well on how absurd this game can be....ESPECIALLY WITH ELENA & SETH. Also, i dig that combo near the end there, too! Great video! 👍
You forgot to mention the most egregious part of rose’s ultra by far; it’s fully invincible on startup! This makes it a super plus on block combo starting invincible reversal that wins neutral for you even if it’s baited and the opponent makes it whiff
that was only in super, it didnt have invincibility, just no startup and no recovery, and since then they gave it recovery so you can properly bait and punish it
"When street fighter 5 comes out will I ever play SF4 again" Fuck no. Hell fucking no. Always hated SF4, still hate it, give me my motherfuckin' points back.
What a fun video and with great editing. SSF4 was my first Street Fighter and the first fighting game I ever learned properly, what an insane game it was. I was just a young teenager and this was the early 10's so I didn't know most of this and learned a ton of things I wish I knew 10 years ago. Man if rollback ever got officially added I'd be back on it Day 1.
Both SF4 and MK9 I think are representative of what a perfect fighting game is. Which is being anything BUT perfect. The amount of bullshit in these games is second to none, and that's what makes them so great. There are clear rules, but the rules don't prevent the fights to go full bananas. It's also a testament of how far the art direction goes. SF4 is a beautiful game, a throwback to arcade era that has its own flavor. The presentation is very lighthearted, but the message is strict: to be good you you'll have to earn it.
I'm glad people enjoy it but personally I am glad we are out of that era more or less. These games are crazy fun but not my competitive ideal. I'm glad they can be played anytime but that they've been replaced. Personally. Imo.
@@lancergt1000 games change. Im just happy they removed the vortex in SF5 by introducing quick rises. SF4 will still be my fav SF just because of the art, sound, and generally overall design.
I loved this video! Great video! I liked that you summarized and put all of these aspects of SF4 into one video! There are two things that I would have wanted to add into this video: Rolento's backflip roll attack, and just how strong Poison's zoning game is.
You talk about all the things that made USFIV broken, I see (mostly) the things that made it interesting and kinda wild. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Its called clickbait. The only thing that is legitimately "broken" about this game is that Elena was OP. If she was broken she would've been banned in tournaments.
To this day, still my favorite fighting game ever. Both in spite of, and in some cases because of, the absolute dirt and jank. Man, do I miss Abel. Such an amazing character to play.
I love these types of videos so much. I remember watching someone else do a UMVC3 is broken. I dont know if you took inspiration but i loved that video and i can say the same here. Please make more of these :)
You can confirm red focus with Balrog. You need to use him MP Dash Straight as an ender, but at that point, the damage scaling isn’t worth it depending what buttons preceded the MP Straight.
I never played a lot of Street Fighter, let alone SFIV, but this video is really good and well-made. I enjoy these types of game analyses that give you an understanding of all the bullshit immediately. Also, I appreciate the Seth section because he's easily my favorite SF character design and not much else.
Man, thank you for the hard work you put into this! It took me back to my early 20s. The countless of hours playing on Xbox 360 and practicing in training mode. All to perfect my combos, just to drop them and get hit by Seth’s ultra 🙃
No mention of crazy shit like vanilla sagat/gief or AE yun, or the weirdness that happens in Omega, but this video is about Ultra so that’s fine. Should probably have mentioned that Vega used to be even worse especially in vanilla. Great video though I loved it and it’s telling that my only criticism is about what you didn’t include because everything you did include was 1000% true.
yeah i tried not to include stuff in past versions, wouldve been really easy just to pinpoint "x character is broken in x version of the game" and have that fill out the whole video. i think i might make a separate video on omega because it has absolutely no concept of balance
The amount of work you put into this video is insane. Also glad they added an input buffer on the newer games, couldn’t imagine having to do damn near perfect combos
Ive always thought, and still do, that SF4 benefitted heavily from the era of gaming that was just before mainstream internet usage and message boards like reddit. If 4 released in the 2020s people would complain so hard at how bad and broken it is.

I've never really played SF much myself (I'm more a KOF player) but I love watching SF4 tourney footage and competitive matches, as well as deeper content like Bafael videos, Juicebox, and other players like PR Rog, Daigo, Tokido, Kazunoko, even Xiao Hai, and the other usual suspects.
aw i love videos like this. finding out about all the busted stuff in games while jabbing at them lovingly is always such a joy to watch
probably the clearest explanation of crouch teching ive ever seen and its in a meme video LOL
Otherwise this video is amazing, best thing I’ve seen today
22:47 I remember playing the Arcade mode and Seth just doing this crossup many times, and even if you was able to block it he probably was gonna grab u.
I hate this guy so much.
They actually programmed an AI to do cross ups?
@@Cezkarma idk if is programmed to do so.
But seems like wheneever you are way too far away against it, it will shot an sonic boom then teleport behind you when the proyectile is about to hit
@@Cezkarmadoesn't matter if they meant it because he learned them
@@Cezkarmaiirc his boss mode does the cross up automatically
Like someone showed how boss Seth differed, and a few of his basic oki/followups are just baked into his moves if they hit
@@Qobp They just programmed the AI to do it. Even if you block correctly, as always the AI reads your inputs. In this case its the safest to backdash since it has invulnurability.
You can still cheese the shit out of AI Seth on hardest difficulty. My favourite is using Dictator and just keep doing headstomps from far away. Stupid AI seth will just keep throwing booms.
the editing on this is genuinely impeccable i've watched this probably over 10 times since it was uploaded. i love the transitions between topics, specifically to the ultras section. like there's just so much impact from metsu shoryu and then adding the song change??? chef's kiss. really makes it feel like you're about to go into some fucked up shit, even if you know nothing about sf4. good shit
This is super professional and entertaining. Thank you, SF4.
Love your videos. I can remember picking this up having never played a street fighter game and getting wrecked by Seths. I was beyond frustrated but like you said the game had some ups and downs, but was charming no matter how high my blood pressure got. Will always hold a special place in my memory.
I was ass at this game, but it remains the most fun iteration I have played. Solid vid and happy to be a new subscriber
2024: “I’m glad we don’t have to deal with broken characters like Elena anymore”
Capcom: “Hold my beer”
11:37 I'm glad ya snuck in a Smug reference here for Dudley.
To be honest though? I know Seth's Lightning Legs is an annoying move that has a bunch of great properties...but it is a REALLY sick combo ender, right?
it is. Its a.k.a. firecracker kicks.
Man you made such a nostalgic video with contents and properties of the game I wasnt even aware of despite playing for it. Loved the content, take my sub!
24:46 Seth is such a killing machine that even his ass has a hitbox. XD
absolutely amazing video.
incredible video. thanks for the trip down memory lane. i see all the work that went into this, thank you!
You forgot to mention the most egregious part of rose’s ultra by far; it’s fully invincible on startup! This makes it a super plus on block combo starting invincible reversal that wins neutral for you even if it’s baited and the opponent makes it whiff
that was only in super, it didnt have invincibility, just no startup and no recovery, and since then they gave it recovery so you can properly bait and punish it
@@biglightning88 sorry about that, I'm living in the past... great video!
No way in hell ltg didnt complain once
"When street fighter 5 comes out will I ever play SF4 again"
Fuck no.
Sf4 and mk9 too goated, what throwbacks
I'm glad people enjoy it but personally I am glad we are out of that era more or less. These games are crazy fun but not my competitive ideal. I'm glad they can be played anytime but that they've been replaced. Personally. Imo.
Hmmm idk if I like how much SF4 relied on esoteric option selects tho
@@lancergt1000 games change. Im just happy they removed the vortex in SF5 by introducing quick rises. SF4 will still be my fav SF just because of the art, sound, and generally overall design.
I still watch some SF4 fights. The top plays are pretty goated.
As a long time El Fuerte fan, you have no idea how happy I was to learn that he is actually good 😭
11:37 "with the greatest of ease" ah....i see what you did there....lol
I loved this video! Great video! I liked that you summarized and put all of these aspects of SF4 into one video!
There are two things that I would have wanted to add into this video: Rolento's backflip roll attack, and just how strong Poison's zoning game is.
Had to throw this on .75 speed to fully take in all the data. Great video.
For me it's one of the few videos that got the pace right, I was able to read almost everything at normal speed before the next text appears.
@@Manglet762Still not as good as Heeew's pacing. Heeew's pace is the perfect mix of enough time to read but not too much
You talk about all the things that made USFIV broken, I see (mostly) the things that made it interesting and kinda wild. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Its called clickbait. The only thing that is legitimately "broken" about this game is that Elena was OP. If she was broken she would've been banned in tournaments.
@@bryanleeyf87 Clearly you don't know what "Broken" means.
What a genuinely beautiful love letter to this game. Good job, man
Sf4 taught me that sometimes fighting games that are not balanced are the ones you always come back to
You can confirm red focus with Balrog.
You need to use him MP Dash Straight as an ender, but at that point, the damage scaling isn’t worth it depending what buttons preceded the MP Straight.
Fantastic video, have always loved these types of videos that give out so much information on games
I never played a lot of Street Fighter, let alone SFIV, but this video is really good and well-made. I enjoy these types of game analyses that give you an understanding of all the bullshit immediately. Also, I appreciate the Seth section because he's easily my favorite SF character design and not much else.
This video was a blast to watch !! SF4 definetly is a legendary game
Man, thank you for the hard work you put into this! It took me back to my early 20s. The countless of hours playing on Xbox 360 and practicing in training mode. All to perfect my combos, just to drop them and get hit by Seth’s ultra 🙃
For Balrog, u can do MP dash straight into Red focus. That's the only way for him
unless you're insane
Unless you're insane
@@tedjomuljono3052 Hope u know I'm being serious, bc I tried it and it works. It only works for that strength :)
USF4 was actually my first fighting game and it got me to branch out and enter tournaments, thank you SF4 :3
@@biglightning88Gief on Omega was done so dirty xd
Not all of the information was perfectly accurate. Fuerte didn't have an infinite. It's a common misconception.
@@pricklypear3625 run stop fierce wasn't an infinite?
@@Pandaman64 Nope. It looped 17 or 18 times before pushing Fuerte out too far for the cl.HP.
Imagine thinking that the Internet wasn't mainstream in 2009 lol
@@coolcarl571 It certainly wasn't the titan of public opinion like it is now though. That wouldn't really come until the time of USF4 and SF5 I feel
@@Jfrost9101 Gaming industry also gotten huge like real massive in the recent years. Like take a look at the player count of Wukong and compare it to some popular game years ago. That amount of players is something you get for massive mp games like CS or Valorant. That's wild for a single player game.
I find it funny how Feng Shuei Engine just turns Juri in an anime figther character
This game got me into the fighting genre ! Despite his flaws, he'll still have a special place in my heart. The soundtrack still gives me goosebumps :D it took me back ! Thanks for the great video :p
This is a masterpiece of a video. I played a lot of characters in this game, and you somehow managed to touch on every one of them. Thanks for the great video!
El fuerte on 3ds was my shit
Amazing video you made here. Thank you for taking me back to the glory days of the FGC.
20:26 Good riddance? Nah man no such luck. She's returning in SF6 😂
Love this keep it up! I’ve only just gotten into street fighter so learning the history of broken characters is really cool to see
Seeing the Elena section now, knowing that she'll be returning within a year's time to Street Fighter 6... There's a lot of work to be done if she's gonna be a balanced character.
i cant believe you figured out the formula with less than 10 videos. this was amazing and I never played SF4
broken backdashes in 4 is why I eat facekicks in current games smh, i STILL expect it. i love this game so much tho (i prefer AE). also I miss my husbando Abel, he was such a blast (and troll lol)
good video man, had some really good laughs with the sett and elena parts, thanks!
Broken or not, I still enjoy ultra sf4 flaws and all!
BTW great video dude
I've never even played a street fighter game and i enjoyed this video greatly during my 5am rabbithole session
i miss el fuerte. i didnt even combo with him all i liked doing was running around and jumping off walls and flopping on people. my fav game and character in any fg
Thanks bro, you made an awesome video, What a good memory. Miss the hype of USF4. Damn ❤
Despite it being such a broken game and getting shit on by family memebers that play this game I still think this game is super dope at the end of it all. Still goes to show the even if broken and game fun dun matter still good game. Thanks for maknig this video man I loved watching it as a person who was really young when this game got packed up.
"he can get through fireballs with the greatest of ease" genuinely caught me off guard lol
17:05 Well...look who's back
The FGC is gonna need some *HEALING* for their PTSD next year.
