- River City Girls 2 reviewed by Jarrett Green on PC. Also available on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
Whether you're a long-time fan of these games, or you’ve just been recently introduced to the beat-’em-up by the genre’s renaissance over the past few years, River City should be your next stop. River City Girls 2’s RPG elements, dense combat, and witty sense of humor is a real shot in the arm to a genre that has been celebrating its history lately, but also in need of some innovation. Here, by expanding on its 2019 revival of the foundational design concept laid all the way back in 1989, Wayforward has blended history seamlessly with modern day vibes to create something true to its roots and new on the scene at the same time. You might call being led back and forth through the city’s map stale, but you can’t say those locations aren’t gorgeous and full of great music.

Game is fantastic, only thing I’m not a fan of is you can only save the game in your hideout area and that they seemed to make you weaker defensively and enemies take more to kill. The combat is much better, the soundtrack is another banger and there’s more side missions and much more different routes to do than before plus the 4 player local coop and soon to be added online makes it arguably better than the first game.
The people who made Scott pilgrim vs the world game must have been huge fans of this series
Oh totally. The series itself too. Dragon Twins. Crash And The Boys. Lotsa RCR/Kunio Kun references
YES!
considering the Scott Pilgrim books have loads of River City references in it, it only makes sense that when a game was made it itself was also heavily inspired by River City
Scott pilgrim came out before them
@@alexfranklin1190 the River City Ransom came to the NES in 1989.
The soundtrack is just insane for this game.
Still waiting on my order from Limited Run🤨 I love this series ❤
There something for every type of beat em up fan. HE SAID THE THING
💀
There's only one type of beat em up fan, and they all share the same brain cell.
@@HeroC14 we are legion
This game is EPIC! Feels like an open world beat em up!!!
You probably already know these games, but have you tried River City Ransom Underground and Friends of Ringo Ishikawa? They're also two open world beat em ups
remember playing River City Ransom
ahh the memories
Never enough beat ‘em ups maybe time for Final Fight to come back but instead of stages you explore all of Metro City.
They tried that exact thing once already. It was called Final Fight: Streetwise and it was a total shitshow. Streetwise is why Final Fight hasn’t had anything other than compilation rereleases of the first game since the PS2.
Missed opportunity to get the city girls on the soundtrack. 😩
Underrated comment
These characters all felt well balanced and it was easy switching to the other characters
okie dokie now time to wait 4 more years for River city girls 3.
Made me wanna play captain commando again
Sol Badguy is in this game btw 😌
And Jam!!
Why is it every time IGN says the dialogue is sharp and witty they show a clip like 'nice try booger breath!'
Dotemu have had a helluva year. Shredders revenge and now this?! They need to sit down!
Sounding like he was bout to give it a 9 or a 10 what happened lol
Marian is from Double Dragon. She got buff. Maybe got tired of being kidnapped.
They should really update the beat em up genre
Just one question: DO WE GET TO BEAT UP GODAI?
That's was a great beat'em up games, RCG2, was perfect game for me to play, in ps4, this game is the same like fantastic 4 ps1 1998 games
Question, why is this an action rpg and tmnt (the new one) is a beat em up? They look pretty similar to me. Map choices, leveling up and unlocking ability, buying and upgrading. Pretty standard
TMNT you play through level by level, in this you're giving full choice to explore, backtrack etc. Then there's also an upgrade and stat system as well along with side quests. Think of it like a side scrolling open world
@@TrueLives035 tmnt is also giving you choices to explore and backtrack. Albeit there's only one level you can choose to progress the game. As for stat and side quest tmnt has that too, although a very simple one. This is more like a beat em up with a small rpg element too me
@Leonardo Santoso completely different games. Tmnt you can't go back forward up down side to side at will. You can only go left to right and then have to replay the stage. It's legit an open map to explore here. Side quests are only collectibles in tmnt, here there's actual side quests and mini games like dodgeball and volleyball along with search quests
They're both beat em up's honestly.
@ETNOMEGA thats true but can't deny the obvious elements that differentiate the 2
It's time for developers to remember the genre of bitham It's time for developers to remember the genre beat em up, and how high-quality it can be. Taking the example of river city girl, street of rage 4. The world lacks high-quality games in this genre.
The peak era of couch co-op beat em up needed to come back fresh.
fun fact - the Kunio-kun series was as much known for their sports titles as for their beat-em-ups.
Kawaki is in the game? Nice!
there are some quality cameos in the game.
Great review IGN River City Girls 2 is def a great beat em up game
Love this game and hope for part3, since magic and zombies is already set, take a page from Bodysnatchers or Attack the Block to fight alien invasion
wonder how the Jam mains feel that she's a support in this game before being added to strive guess you gotta keep cooking in Xrd :p
River City girls 2 is tomorrow! And Cristina vee as the vocalist of the opening song !
@@alucard971 huh?
@@alucard971 he does!!
Is the game Yakuza like a 3D version of River City Ransom? I'd love a 3D kunio game if there isn't one already.
Yakuza was definitely influenced by RCR but it’s a more story driven experience. You should check out Judgment and Lost Judgment too.
Similar but much stronger emphasis on story and characters. Give Zero a shot and if you like that, try the rest in chronological order. Also Like A Dragon if you like RPGs.
Kenka Bancho is a series of 3d beat em ups heavily inspired by the River City/Kunio-Kun games. Most haven't made it to the west though.
3DS had a "3D" one lol
Yea Yakuza is set in the same universe as River City
No mention of performance ...
"only marginally different from the one before it." yup
you guys failed to mention that the game runs at 30fps on ALL PLATFORMS. Waiting to buy the game until they fix this problem
Honestly, it's not very noticeable after like 10 mins of playing so-
@@coolkyle9000 it's the input lag that comes with 30fps that bothers me more than the frame rate itself tbh. After playing the first one which was super responsive this one feels clunky in comparison
Love the game. But the worst part about owning this game on the Switch is the load times...Going in between each stage, there's a lengthy load screen. About 8-10 seconds long. So when you're backtracking for the story, just be sure you're not tired because those load times are sleepers.
That’s just noi from dorohedoro 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
The music reminds me of Superchick. Nice
Great looking game!
They really need to fix the framerate
Okay
When the game comes out?
Today, December 15th.
Looks like Marian got tired of getting hit in the stomach, those abs!
Slightly let down that we cannot use Noize
Bro
What about the plot twist on the first game?
The plot twist was addressed in the secret ending. A new ending was made after launch that made Kyoko & Masko their actual girlfriends.
1:22 Is that Todd Haberkorn?
Wouldnt say cameos but a bunch of references from double dragon to storm from xmen to skeletor from he man lol.
Yes
1:23 Its Natsu!
Wish the 1st game wasn't so expensive still...after a certain amount of years go by..it should drop in price automatically.
If you saved a few bucks each of those years you’d have it by now. Smaller devs deserve for their games to stay higher, they can’t eat the cost of sales like AAAs can.
@@user-oj7co5wm8g A game like this should only cost $20
I'm skipping the 2nd game because $40 is insane for a 5 hour sidescroller beat em up
@@eatanotherzio6811 wishlist it, it goes on sale sporadically.
It's called Limited Run Games, hence the high pricetag
Here comes my rapid fire controller..
“I’ll kick your face in!”
Art style didn’t do it for me. But the combat was decent for a while
will capacom ever do this
Blossom? Is that you?
Oh snap when did this drop
Tomorrow my friend
@@TrueLives035 sweet
They need to make a 2d anime handrawn River City Girls game.
Does it have “barf”?
Combat for the first one was kinda clunky, hope they fixed it for this one.
It's identical +/- some minor tweaks for more floaty enemies and easier juggle.
Does anyone want to play this with me on Sunday?
Sure

Cool Beans! Great Stuff!
Ok guys. This game, shedders revenge or streets of rage 4?
8/10
The score doesn't matter if you don't care about the feedback.
Are the enemies still damage sponges?
If you learn how to consistently juggle in your combos or just buff up your stats by eating food, enemies won’t feel like damage sponges in either game
Yes even more so in this one and you’re hp is less than before but there’s definitely more things you can do offensively including a new marvel vs Capcom style air combos and there’s a lot more moves you can learn.
Wait, IGN gave this an 8, yet they gave Streets of Rage 4 a 7?
Probably different reviewers
But what did they give shredders revenge?
@@Gardi93 Probably cus its better
river city girls is also better then Shredders revenge. they are making these retro games a little too cheaply. Bother Streets of Rage and Turtles should have had voice acting and cutscenes to tell the story. this ain't 1990@@MrSaintjimmy64
Double dragon please
1:35 how dare the dev remove riki pompadour!?!??!
He's looked like that since RCG1. Unless you mean his Zero/Retro look where he just looks like a shirtless Josuke.
Great content. Boys and girls this is my favorite game!
Better than Streets of Rage 4?
This game is like a bad Turok 2
And it’s a shemless earthworm Jim ripoff
Fun fact : this game is from the creators of shantae
Cool
It’s not available on PSN. WTH?!
Dec 15, just wait until tomorrow
Its nice to see Provie is an official character.
A River City Girl is the type of girl you never take home to meet your mother.
Is it 7?
Nope.
@@dmaster342 thank you
This game is the Double Dragon Neon of Kunio-kun.
Pretty much but DD is always better even the graphics are better

river ransom cit was yhe best! didnt know there are follow ups to it
wow they even recycled the enemies from the game made a couple years ago
It's a sequel what did you expect?
Ikr, almost as if this game takes place after the first one?🤷♂
they shouldve had text bubbles ore something stylish instead of just text at the BOTTOM of the screen
That’s classic RCR style

IGN, and 8/10's
Can't find a happier couple.
aint that Noi?
amazing game 🔥👍
FINALLY!!
Oof. With all the time and energy and money that goes into making a game, I'll never understand how writing and voice acting can be this atrocious.
1000% Haraam
LMAO
Lol
The art style is not for me...
Finally they doing a review on this smh after how long
this game isn't even out yet.
Are you okay?
This game has been out since December 1st in Asia.
🤦♂
Elon has this guys jaw sore
This really makes no sense
This games looks like Mother Russa bleeds and the power puff girls had a hybrid baby. 😏
bisexual art style

Great game, but it screams Girl Power. Most gamers already skip over games in stores tagged "Female Protagonist".
Female protagonists, dont care
ok Incel...
Freaking sexist
