Exactly this. My fiancee is 5 years younger and once said the PS3 and 360 era was the craziest jump. Mario 64 was my exact response. Honorable mention to Doom though I was real young for that one.

This shows just how the types of games have changed. We started with a simple arcade game involving quick thinking and avoiding enemies while trying to get a high score. And we end with a extremely narratively driven adventure in which the game is almost a means of telling the story. I find it interesting that games went from being just games with little to no story to being largely story.
Which I find sad for some part games are supposed to be interactive not hour long cutscenes like movies. For the same reason I hate uncharted 4. It is a bore with its cutscenes. God of war and bioshock are games in which the story is well executed. They don't force it with huge cutscenes and you discover the lore slowly through hints

That was the original intention. I love both types personally, and I’d probably put all three games you mentioned in my top ten favorite games of all time.

Back in 2004, I wanted GTA San Andreas to win......but Half Life 2 was truly something else. Other games such as Doom 3, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Ninja Gaiden, Prince of Persia, Wow, Far Cry, KillZone released in 2004 were all great! It was a stacked and impressive year for gaming!

I would agree when it comes to digitized graphics and figting games in the 90's like MK and SF. Although I would say the most revolutionary period was between 95 and 2005. When games started using 3D polygons instead of just pixels. I would say GTA 3 even took it further being the first Open world 3D polygonal game of it's kind. I don't think were surpass that period untill VR becomes the norm.
I think that's because 1999 was the time where Dreamcast was successful (SEGA) and that system was almost as powerful as the PS2 and could allow far better graphics than the N64

I agree, I personally have lost that sense of magic that accompanied games in the 90’s and early 2000’s when we were constantly seeing new mechanics and massive advances in graphics with each new title. Now many triple a titles are dumbed down or built to extract more money from players.
Same. I remember playing all of these when they came out. The old arcade games brought back memories. Missed seeing these on there: Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Shogun Total War, Age of Empires 2, and Starcraft.
I was hoping for Red Dead Redemption 2 at the 2018 spot. EDIT: Not that I don't like God of War 4, or Spiderman. I've completed them both on 100%, and they're awesome. But in my opinion Red Dead Redemption 2 is still better.
Donkey Kong Country warms my heart. First videogame I remember playing and beating it with my brothers. I wish I could feel like that again. What an absolute throwback. The music and sfx just unlocked deep memories in my brain. Absolutey content right now just hearing it. Wow!

Nintendo is still the most profitable video game company when talking about the video game industry alone. Nintendo still owns the most shares in that industry as well. Nintendo also owns 2 of the top 5 most profitable media IP. #1 Pokemon. #5 Super Mario and related. Even in the Wii U slump they still was the most profitable video game company with the most shares due to 3DS/2DS carry them during that time. They still on top profit wise which is the only thing that counts cause well money talks.

Some of these HIT REALLY HARD because it brings back so many memories with friends...I can see visualize the room, the mood and the people I was playing with ! All of these people are still in my life.
There were so many super important games and genres in the 90s and later, that don't get any hint of existing in this list. Strategy games, both real time (C&C, Starcraft, etc.) and turn based (HoMM, Civ, Master of Orion) and mixed (X-Com, Total War), adventure games (Monkey Island, the Sierra games), simulations (X-Wing/TIE-Fighter, Wing Commander Saga etc.), driving (any) - and whatever many others I forgot. Don't let them be forgotten.

The Last of us 2 is such a beautiful game. The graphics and game play are unlike anything I've ever experienced. Gaming has evolved so much. So grateful to be able to experience this.

Halo CE was the first gamer that truly blew my mind when it released with the Xbox in 2001. As a kid who was only ever used to seeing N64 graphics, Halo was like going from black and white to color TV.
I remember the first time I saw Super Mario World I was literally amazed. Not as much by the graphics, but the audio was something I never heard before. Was all very realistic to my then 12 year old brain.

Didn't realize that Mario 3 was out that much earlier in Japan than in the US. It's cool to see some games that blew my mind on the list. I remember Donkey Kong Country, Mario 64, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, Knights of the Old Republic, Oblivion, Grand Theft Auto 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3, and Breath of the Wild all blowing my mind at the time they were released.
2017 maybe the most stacked year in gaming history it had 4 games that deservered GOTY: BOTW, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier Automata and Mario Odessey. Also some notable mentions AC Origins, Nioh, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Wolfenstein II, Resident Evil 7, and Destiny 2.
So many great games but damn the amount of hours I spent playing Halo, Tony hawk, Skyrim & the witcher 3 it would be in the thousands of hours! Great times...good memories.

I agree, I personally have lost that sense of magic that accompanied games in the 90’s and early 2000’s when we were constantly seeing new mechanics and massive advances in graphics with each new title. Now many triple a titles are dumbed down or built to extract more money from players.

EDIT: Not that I don't like God of War 4, or Spiderman. I've completed them both on 100%, and they're awesome. But in my opinion Red Dead Redemption 2 is still better.

@@kalliase I'm not even a hater. I enjoyed Uncharted 4 and Last of Us 1 and 2. But it drives me mad when games have all these cutscenes or just really slow parts where I have to walk around having a conversation. Just let me play lol. That's part of the reason I love Soulsborne games- cuts out all the BS and just let's you play.
Nintendo brought so much life to gaming over the years, pretty consistently. Sony lately really has been gunning for GOTY . Next year will be interesting, alot of goty devs releasing their latest games in 2022

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time - 25 year old with gameplay that is still fantastic today. Still one of my favorite games.

Wow marble madness was thinking 10 years ahead of it's time giving you a 3D feeling through perspective.
Isometric design is one of my favorites, especially for the ability to make optical illusions. Monument Valley is a great example of this.
There was even a C64 version.
It's always disappointed me that there aren't more levels, but maybe they packed everything they could into the cartridge. (I doubt it started with Nintendo, but that's all I know about the game)

There were so many super important games and genres in the 90s and later, that don't get any hint of existing in this list. Strategy games, both real time (C&C, Starcraft, etc.) and turn based (HoMM, Civ, Master of Orion) and mixed (X-Com, Total War), adventure games (Monkey Island, the Sierra games), simulations (X-Wing/TIE-Fighter, Wing Commander Saga etc.), driving (any) - and whatever many others I forgot. Don't let them be forgotten.

Looks like the video used Japanese release dates, if SMB3 is thr 1988 winner. Mega Man 2 came out in December of 1988 in Japan, so it doesn't make the 1989 cut.

Id give that praise to Doom or unreal which isnt in this list either. I would argue that FF7 was as big of a deal for the games industry as a whole as RE4 was.

Expensive? You can buy a used ps4 these days around 150 dollars, and used physical copies of games for as cheap as 5-20 dollars. Yeah it might not be the best experience but it’s still fun if you don’t mind 30fps.
The Last of us 2 is such a beautiful game. The graphics and game play are unlike anything I've ever experienced. Gaming has evolved so much. So grateful to be able to experience this.

Halo CE was the first gamer that truly blew my mind when it released with the Xbox in 2001. As a kid who was only ever used to seeing N64 graphics, Halo was like going from black and white to color TV.
I remember the first time I saw Super Mario World I was literally amazed. Not as much by the graphics, but the audio was something I never heard before. Was all very realistic to my then 12 year old brain.

Didn't realize that Mario 3 was out that much earlier in Japan than in the US. It's cool to see some games that blew my mind on the list. I remember Donkey Kong Country, Mario 64, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, Knights of the Old Republic, Oblivion, Grand Theft Auto 4, Skyrim, Witcher 3, and Breath of the Wild all blowing my mind at the time they were released.

I like how the 80s and 90s games were mostly cartoony and colorful while the 00s and on the trend went into mostly dark fantasy themed games
2017 maybe the most stacked year in gaming history it had 4 games that deservered GOTY: BOTW, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier Automata and Mario Odessey. Also some notable mentions AC Origins, Nioh, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Wolfenstein II, Resident Evil 7, and Destiny 2.
Horizon zero dawn hands down the best game.
