I also got into the Super Dodgeball and World Cup titles - I knew the sprites and gameplay felt similar but was too young to realize it was all done by the same studio. Such awesome games - great music, controls were good for their time, and the humor and gameplay were top notch. Playing this on the Switch through an HDMI scanline generator and wow, it looks legit on the thick scanline setting, they fit the pixels perfectly. Bought the physical copy to play with my wife and we're having a heck of a good time with this one.
I love this franchise( same with Double Dragon, Final Fight and Streets of Rage!) ever since the NES-Genesis-SNES Days! I definately see where Yusuke Urameshis got his cincept from and look forward to playing this!!!

Nice to see you're back to these deep cut reference videos, great work. As a very minor issue, I only recognized Burnov from the NeoGeo Double Dragon 1/-on-1 fighting game, where he looked more HokutonoKen-ish, so it's neat to see that there's more history to him.

Funny enough, that already exists as Kunio-Kun: The World Classics. Any ROMs that haven't come overseas though are left untranslated, but menus and any English games are still left in English, with some games actually getting an overhaul like bug fixes, less lag, etc. It's in Asia only though, but you still probably buy it off of import sites for Switch, Xbox One, and PS4.

When I saw this game on the Xbox Marketplace this morning and read the first lines tying it to River City Ransom I simply said "SOLD!" and downloaded it to my console. MAN, this game is fun!
Thought I know almost all characters about Nekketsu series, I didn't notice of Kaori and Yoko. Of course I know the manager girl in hockey series and Women's hockey team, and to me it was the most joyful Nekketsu game in my childhood. Though I didn't notice them. But well... They changed a lot in River City Girls, right?
There were indeed a lot of changes, as River City Girls is kind of its own rebooted universe. :) I have a newer video listing many more references/characters.
It felt like DD Neon's movement and questionable hitboxes. I thought game co-director Bannon Rudis, who helmed RCR Underground, would've brought something to the table.
There is also river city: tokyo rumble that is on the 3ds and i have that game and river city girls already pre-orderd it, the cardridge version for the nintendo switch it will be awesome.. crash and the boys street challenge was also for the game boy only in japan never played river city ransom remake or showdown on the 3ds or underground

It's footage from the CD version on PC Engine, which adds voices and cutscenez. The Japanese version in general had more story/content than the localized Nintendo World Cup.
It's not part of the Kunio series, but it does take some inspiration from it :) (I believe it was even using Kunio characters early on in development, before it started to take shape)
There is SO much Double Dragon presence and influences all over the game. I have another video uploaded that spoils most of it, though it's worth experiencing it :) Pure joy.

@@samirjohnson4524 Pretty much in this version they're "players" and they consider the two girls that "hanged" with them, while in the og Hasabe was Kuni's love interest, while Misako did kiss Kunio on the lips in one game while Kyoko was just introduced in the Tachi no Banka while Riki was still steady with Mami he's got Kyoko a new comer to the series as a girlfriend. The Kunio series canon is as confusing as Double Dragon.
@@samirjohnson4524 Kunio is very convoluted in their timeline one thing you need to know is that River City Girls is kinda of a reboot/continuation Tachi no Banka where Kyoko first appeared and is Riki's girlfriend. Heck the first Kunio game Riki was the boss and Kunio beat him and became best friends and allies out of mutual respect
It's different in the Japanese version since the game they referenced was released there, but it's not really a better ending. It's shown that Kunio and Riki are in fact dating Misako and Kyoko, but it's casually mentioned that they're being cheated on without any tact.
My next video will detail all the cameos in the game :) Miyuki doesn't directly appear, but her name appears on a sign downtown. (The one helping out with the dog quest is Mihoko from a different Kunio game).
I never played the other river city games, but I am in love with river city girls. It has a really fun Saturday morning cartoon vibe. That said I like the yankee theme of the original games more then the westernized version. It is unfortunate everything back in the day had to be "westernized".

I was actually disappointed with the story all that build up for nothing, just a 4th wall breaking stuff on the true ending.
