Saltwater Aquarium - Surviving extended power outage from storms, floods, hurricanes and powerless.

- If a power outage lats to long it could wipe out your saltwater reef tank aquarium... its not the power outage itself thats the issue..but the lack of flow and gas exchange. A tank packed full of fish can quickly use up the oxygen in the water.. Adding a battery operated air pump is likely your cheapest option. If you have the supplies i would strongly recommend hooking up a battery backup to a single wave maker to help provide oxygen to your tank. You will want to ensure the wave maker agitates the surface to promote gas exchange.
If you love in a hot climent you may also have to consider cooling your tank. it may be wise to stock up on RODI ice cubes.
if you know your leaving STOP feeding your fish, no last meals as it will just pollute the tank and fowl the water quicker. your fish will be OK with out food for a few days or a week if need be.
IF you have other tips let us know in the comments below.

Great video 👍
Everyone needs to watch this! This saved my tank (hopefully) during hurricane Harvey in Houston!!
Great video. Lots of good pointers. Recently my neighborhood had a 3 day power outage due to a blown component underground. My Generator went through 10 gallons of gas but my tanks and Fridge all ran without a hitch.
You are prepared Phillip!
Thanks for this video! Hurricane coming my way within the next few days!
Maurice Pressey take care and good luck
Great relevant video with all that's going on!
Daily Reefing thanks buds. I know far to many people on the affected areas in out online community so I was inspired to make a quick vid on the essentials
My friend I live here in Miami and we just a hurricane at the corner of us in the Caribbean Thank you! For this video very instructive but show us the kind of batteries you use so we can build or get something like that
CUBAN REEFER the battery air pumps take D cells. My giant battery - I have a DIy video that's linked at the end cars near the end of this video But essentially a battery with a trickle charger (you want a sealed battery for indoors)
Thank you for the information I live in England so our power is pretty good but you never know like you said thinking about getting a generator cheers pal good video
Always a good idea to have a backup for atleast your power heads! :D Thanks Dave :)
Thanks for the great tips bud. I'm in Florida so we are preparing for Irma.
I feel for you, good luck! Hopefully these tips help someone! I know alot of people from the youtube community in the affected areas.. scary stuff
ReefDudes I purchased 2 generator to be safe one for the fish tank and one for the house just to be safe
Sounds like you should be covered for power. Hopefully it passes and you don't actually have to use it
ReefDudes I hope so but forecast does not look good for Miami. We are getting hit with atleast a cat 4
Same here I’m in Pompano Beach stay safe. No generator here
Almost Perfect timing. Just a few days late. This will help a lot during Irma.
I sure hope so!
Just got power back last night after 36 hours thanks to Irma. My 150 and 29 Biocube fared well. I used a battery operated air pump, and I also used a cup of water to create some flow when I had a few minutes free. Definitely gonna save up for a small generator after this.
Good to hear you and your tanks survived it in one piece! Thanks for the update Anthony!!!
Thanks Dev im in south fla storms gonna hit us this weekend hope i dont lose power i got some battery airpumps in case.
Good luck John!!!!!!!! take care through the madness. Good call on battery air pumps!
Don't forget the aeration bubbling!
Cruz Arias very true. Good aeration can save a tank through an extended power outage
Good tips for this storms days. Is my idea or i see a small gap between your thank and your steel stand? Thanks for sharing!
Good eye. There is a minuscule gap in the centre! According to the tank manufacture its ok :). I believe it was more than 2 credit cards thick was an issue. One was ok or something along those lines. Have to dig through the old emails
Trying to choose a battery backup. I bought an inverted generator because we loose power often. But since I am away from home more often now I need a battery backup to get the system by until I get home. Just a few hours. I’d like the return pump (jeabo doc-3000) and an icecap 3k gyre. Any ideas how to calculate what will work? Thanks in advance!
What if you don’t have a battery back up!? My brother has been without power for 12 hours now. We live in Missouri and had extremely unexpected severe weather last night. I’m afraid he’s going to lose his tank
Get a butcher of water and scoop some water abs pour it back in cron are feet up. The water agitation will help with gas exchange. Do that as much as you can
@@ReefDudes Thank you so much!!!
Im pretty sure the cold killed my livestock not aeration.
If its gets to extremes yes that can be an issue especially if your in a winter region
Honestly I always used pure no water in the mix , is that a bad idea?
CUBAN REEFER nope. Never hurts! I don't bother with cleaning but everything going into the tank I use RODI
did you use saltwater or freshwater for the vinegar soak, and is its fresh does it need to be ro/di
Its just tap water. I just soak for an hour or two.. then rinse off/wipe down with paper towel and your equipment will look like new
great tips, but i just got hit bad by harvey so a little late, but otherwise good vid!
Yikes, sorry to hear that! I really wish i did this a week or ago, but after hearing form a few people affected i was inspired to whip out a quick one.
With the apc battery back up, running only the heater and pump, about how long will it last?
Heater not long. Pump depends on power draw. Safest is to just run an air pump or powerhead off it
ReefDudes so let say just running a mp10, how long?
c4snipar your better off DIY ing a battery back up and wiring it directly to the mp10. More efficient then using a ups.
