I can understand why we start out with 1 st chn, just so we hear something, but not why the intial aux chn are there and the fact that they are still there after adding other chn's. Really confusing system but very clear tut. One last thought; it is useful to know what version of a VST is being used as things change sometimes with updates eg Kontakt 5 or Kontakt 6. Maybe no difference as far as this is concerned but it can help stop head scratching when things don't work out for everyone because of these verions updates.

    Hello Mike just recently I started writing music again and before. I honestly find your videos amazing. Thank you for putting this out together particularly for Cakewalk. I followed this video to split my drum kit into channels in Cakewalk as I bought the Studio Drummer, but I am having problems doing the routing. I am fine with the Kontakt part but for some reason when I assign the inputs to the audio track lets say kick, I have left/right and stereo options for the kick and none of them is working. If you could to a video of the drum output splitting in Cakewalk it will be very much appreciated. I have been struggling with this for hours now without success. Cheers!
    And again, your videos are kick ass!

    1:17 One Kontakt instance with several instruments
    2:26 Cellos and violins will be mono. Outputs+ > select quantity of outputs and number of channels (select 2 for a stereo output)
    3:25 If it's stereo, start selecting from 'Kt.aux 1'. If adding multiple channels, check 'Ascending output assignment' box.
    3:59 Adding 4 mono channels for the other instruments. Select 1 channel to make the channels mono. Select the host output to be one of the 'Kt. unassigned' channels.
    4:50 Rename the output channels
    5:06 Assign each instrument to a particular output (the use of naming each output channel)
    5:42 Re-initialise Kontakt by clicking '!'
    5:52 Connect the outputs to channels within the DAW. Add or enable audio channels for them.
    7:26 A Kontakt instance with 1 instrument, drums. The outputs are controlled within the instrument. Studio Drummer has a Mixer section for this.
    8:42 Outputs+ > select quantity of outputs and number of channels. Select 'Kt.aux 1', check 'Ascending output assignment' box. Rename the output channels. Re-initialise Kontakt.
    10:15 Assign each drum to particular output channels. Click on each drum in the plugin and select its output.
    10:53 Connect the outputs to channels within the DAW.
    11:41 Stereo channel 1 is for the reverb bus in the plugin. Unmuting that bus and sending a drum (with the Send dial) to the reverb bus makes Stereo channel 1 show activity. The Reverb bus goes to the Master bus in Studio Drummer. And rename the channels in the DAW.
    12:41 Altering the faders on channels in the plugin no longer has any effect. Keep this in mind if you're setting a mix in the plugin before mixing within the DAW.
    13:20 Wrap up

    You can only use 5 stereo outs with studio one because studio one is not properly compatible with kontakt. Everything after the first 5 stereo outs is a mono channel. You can still add more stereos but have to do the manual panning using two tracks in studio one and merge them back together.
    Edit: i should clarify. You can force it to be compatible but you have to alter tge default kontakt output configuration to get 16 stereo outs available to you. Then, after removing all instances of kontakt, you can load a fresh instance and all 16 stereo outs will be available to you.

Typically I only use kick, snare, hihat and 3 toms. Can I put other things on the other 3 tracks that are now seemingly available? I seem to only get cymbals and hihat thru the overheads.

    This video has been INCREDIBLY helpful. Thank you very much. Liked and subscribed based on the help this provided me.
    One potentially dumb question I have is: do we always and only ever have 16 midi channels per project? I tried to combine these two parts of this video by having my strings, piano, and brass across different channels and then wanted to separate the drums too and I couldn't. I know this could sound idiotic to some people but I have a bachelor degree in music composition not in sound recording or software. Hoping to learn much more. Many thanks.

    • @CreativeSauce
      @CreativeSauce  4 года назад +2

      Hi Daniel, I'm so happy to hear this was of help:) As for your question, it's really not stupid at all, I'm glad you asked, as I'm sure others will be wondering.
      The good news is, no you are not limited to 16 channels per project, but rather 16 channels per virtual instrument plugin. I should clarify, I am counting one instance of Kontakt, as an virtual instrument plugin. Of course, one instance of Kontakt can contain many instruments.
      In practical terms, I tend to use one instance of Kontakt for say strings, another for woodwind, another for brass etc.
      So, let's say in the strings instance I have 2 violins, a cello, and bass. I would use midi channels 1-4. And then in the brass instance I have 2 trumpets, a trombone, and a tuba. Again I would use midi channels 1-4.
      Its possible to use the same channels again (even though they are very different parts), because not only do I set a midi channel for each part, but I ALSO point it at a particular plugin instance.
      I hope this makes sense! (I should probably make a video about it sometime).
      Thanks for subscribing!

    Very good info! There's also that batch function but maybe you had reason to not include it: "Batch functions --> Clear output section and create one individual channel for each loaded instrument" :D

    • @CreativeSauce
      @CreativeSauce  5 лет назад +2

      Hi mimojapan - thanks for watching. I perhaps should have mentioned the batch function(s). Like any automatic process, they are quick, but not exact. The main reason I don't use it is because it automatically assigns instruments to stereo outputs, which is not always what I want. I think all Kontakt instruments are in fact stereo (in that they have a left and right channel), but realistically most are mono - in that the left and right channels are identical. However, depending on resources , some people may not care - so your suggestion would be perfect for them. Thank you!

    Thanks much for this - very helpful. One little point; at 12:56 you say that the Kontakt snare fader has no effect. It does affect the reverb channel - I can see your Reverb channel level changing as you move the fader, and on my system, with the reverb send (blue knob) turned up a lot to exaggerate the effect, the fader definitely affects the level through the reverb channel. This makes me wonder...in the Kontakt mixer tab...what is the difference between the snare fader, and the blue snare send knob? Just a different point in the gain stages of that channel? Thanks again, this video was very helpful for me.

    Excellent video! After being totally confounded by the the concept of where to assign stereo versus mono outputs (stereo starts at Kt. aux 1 [1], mono starts at Kt. Unassigned [1]), this video has been pivotal in helping my understanding. Thank you.
    I have a fundamental question though: Once we've got this wonderful scenario set up, how do we save it?
    I understand that Studio One allows for File | Save as Template, which should save all of our session parameters (bit depth, number/type tracks, effect, slider, and Presonus plugin settings, etc). However, will doing this ALSO save the setup within Kontakt itself? Or is that a different save process?

    • @PADR
      @PADR 4 года назад

      You can save these setups, if I'm not mistaken, via an option in the small Presets box above the Kontakt Outputs (near the + button for Outputs). Just save inside there giving it an appropriate name. More universally useful than saving as a Studio One template I think.
