    Mix your Kontakt drums as separate tracks in Logic Pro by setting Kontakt outputs to multiple tracks in Logic Pro X. Mix each Kontakt drum output separately in Logic Pro X. This is less CPU intensive than simply duplicating each Kontakt track in Logic Pro and separating drum sounds that way (which is how I did it when first starting lol).
    Also I know I'm saying "track" at times when I should say "channel" haha.

      Obviously this is 2 years later but I was just following this vid for Kontakt 6, very helpful thanks! Anyway, I was hearing hihat but getting nothing at all (not just low) on the hihat track. Turns out I was accidently on the "Funk" preset, I had meant to be on "init". When I changed to init, the hihat was loud and strong on its own channel. So it seems to be preset-specific.

    This used to drive me nuts. I'd record all the drum parts on what I thought were separate tracks, but when it came time to mix - Everything was going through the one channel. These days I just load my Kontakt Drum sound on as many tracks as I need for drum parts. This method here is probably better but I've gotten set in my ways!

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  3 года назад

      I used to do the same thing - that works too! Only real downsides I see there are CPU usage (can also just freeze the track to alleviate that), and if you change the Kontakt settings on the drums it’s just kinda a pain to keep them all in sync haha.
      I finally got multi out set up and just saved it as a channel strip setting and part of my template, so it was just the upfront time (here’s the video for how to do that part ruclips.net/video/jfK33Om2ZeM/видео.html)

    Thank you for the video! Question - If I have preexisting midi tracks for kick, snare, hihat, etc - do those 'notes' get moved onto the new tracks, or should I "reassign track" to the appropriate track? Should the midi channel on the 'note tracks be changed to match those on the kontakt tracks?

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  Год назад

      Hey thanks for watching and checking out my channel! I'm not sure I completely follow your question. Are you saying you have existing tracks of a separate Kontakt instance?
      Not sure if it helps - but you should be able to have your MIDI input notes on either the main Kontakt track (like I have in the video here), or you can separate those notes out to the individual channel tracks if you prefer to have them separated out that way.

  • @michaellong25467
    @michaellong25467 4 года назад +1

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  4 года назад

      You're welcome! With the method in this video - you can actually already bounce those tracks as separate audio 👍 I do that all the time. Even though all the MIDI is on one Kontakt drum channel, and the actual audio (the audio that would be bounced) is being output to those separate tracks we set up as multi-outs.

    Nice video and very well explained. Is there a way to keep each track as MIDI instead of Audio?

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  4 года назад

      Hey thanks! What's the reason for trying to keep each track's MIDI separate? Before figuring this out, I would duplicate my Kontakt track and separate out the MIDI for each (kick midi on one track, snare on another, etc.) - however, that's more cpu intensive since it runs multiple instance of Kontakt instead of just one (like in this method). So that's one way to do it - I haven't looked into a more elegant way though haha.

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  4 года назад

      Ah nevermind I just remembered there's a way better route for separating and still using multi-out haha. In Kontakt - toward the top of you instrument - where is says "MIDI Ch" - just select "Omni". That will look at all channels for MIDI instead of just Channel A or whatever the default is.

    Hello, great vid! I figured out how to multi out the kick in and out separately as well as the snare but for some reason the room mics sound much dryer than before. Do you know why this is?

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  2 года назад +1

      Hey thank you! Whenever you route individual mics to a Logic channel, you're likely bypassing some of the bus and master bus effects within Kontakt Studio Drummer. So, you'll get the raw mic audio instead of the audio all beefed up by Studio Drummer. Hopefully that helps! That's why I usu do my own EQ, compression, verb, etc on the track or drum bus within Logic.

    • @noahcho542
      @noahcho542 2 года назад

      @@CradleCat Hey thank you for the feedback. I am still a bit confused cus when I multi out the way in this video and bypass all of Kontakt's effects, the room mics still sounds much bigger and roomier then when I route the tracks individually (separating snare in/out etc). Just wondering if know a fix to this or know why this is. Thank you.

    NI kits can be all mono - all the samples in the kits are mono. Makes routing and numbering simpler in both Kontakt and Logic... There's also a whole array of Bus effects inserts for each Group, on top of the Group effects in Kontakt, so a lot of mix magic is possible there before it gets out to Logic. Logic accepts up to 50x mono. For me, 16 is usually enough...I save the output configs as presets in Kontakt: 16m, 32m, 16s/8m, 16s

      Hi Jon thanks for checking out the video! 🙌 Yeah, if you use Kontakt for mixing, there are definitely some other options there - I just prefer to do all the mixing in Logic itself and use this setup to bypass the busses and mixing in Kontakt. Like you said, most of the Kontakt outs I setup as mono - however, I do route the overhead stereo and room stereo outputs from Kontakt as stereo into Logic. Battery is a different beast - cuz a lot of those sample (even kicks and snares) are stereo to begin with.

    Hey dude, thanks for this. I have a question: after setting this up through your instructions, I compared it to the standard 'Stereo' Kontakt instrument I originally had for Studio Drummer (with all my MIDI data on), but the new '8 x mono, 8 x stereo' setup is significantly quieter. Is this correct, or have I done something wrong? One thing that is confusing me is how you seem to have a 'Master' or 'MAIN' output - am I missing this perhaps?
    EDIT: It also sounds a lot different asides the volume, the hits don't sound as...nice?

      @CradleCat  3 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! And yes, I've noticed that, too. I haven't dug into test, but my guess is that it's because of the processing that would normally be done on the Master bus within Kontakt Studio Drummer (compression, tape saturation, EQ). I do my own processing on a drum bus in Logic to give it more punch, and I also process the individual drum tracks from the multi-outs further in Logic (parallel compression on kicks and snares, high pass and high end boost on hi hat and overheads,). Hope that helps!

      @@CradleCat cheers for the quick response, and yes, very helpful because I now know it's not just me, aha! Do you think the master bus processing happens by default, or is there any way I can get in and tweak this; or even just have a stereo channel for the master bus? It certainly seems like the tracks, when seperated like this, are missing some additional processing!

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  3 года назад

      @@roleyruffles7913 Yes, if you click on the "bus" section instead of "close mics" in the Studio Drummer mixer view, then click on "Master" but - you'll see the processing chain within Kontakt along the bottom of the Studio Drummer mixer view. It's more of a preference of where you want to do you processing/mixing - within Logic or within Studio Drummer mixer. However - Since the close mics are now routed around the Studio Drummer master bus in my video - the Master bus processing in Kontakt won't have those (kick, snare, etc.) so it won't be super helpful. I just prefer to do all my processing in Logic because I'm more familiar with it and I like to use the same room reverb as the rest of my tracks.

    • @CradleCat
      @CradleCat  Год назад +1

      Yes absolutely! I have all my drum and percussion tracks going into their own drum bus for organization and bus processing. It’s actually even more important than just organization, because I do bus processing on all those tracks (for example, compression to better glue them together).
      Also helpful because Kontakt has some master bus processing in the normal stereo (non multi out) setup, which we’re bypassing here using the multi outs. Bus processing let’s you get some of that snappiness back. you could even just re-create their processing as plugins in logic on that bus to get a similar feel.

      Good question - it depends on how you mix/process it. Not using multi out lets you control/mix individual sounds within Kontakt itself, and then process the entire drums in a single Logic Pro track if you want to do anything else. Using multi out setup allows you to use Logic's mixing tools/plugins on each individual channel track (instead of just getting the entire drum sound in one track like in the non-multi-out setup).
