OKAY SO: In a collaboration with the ever-amazing @friedalepold, I wanted to make something a little different for this week. She made me this STUNNING ice-queen gown and I thought the best way to highlight her efforts were with a photoshoot set. I dabbled with cardboard sets during Maksoween, so why not now??
Gathering extra cardboard boxes from the dank basement, I got to work building an enchanted winter forest scene!

Hey Rachel, lovely set and beautiful dress!
As a seasoned cardboard set creator, couple of tips:
- double layer your cardboard in 2 directions to overcome the bending and add rigidity.
- get some brown paper tape - super cheap, paintable over and recyclable so you don’t have to remove all the tape to throw out.
- soggy tissue paper or loo roll & pva mush is excellent for adding recyclable texture. Xx

if i had gone to a school that had a theatre club i totally would have been a theatre kid instead i went a Christian privet school and got religious trama
She is absolutely a theatre kid and it’s never too late to become one!Community theatre is a great way to build friendships, share your talents on stage and off, and create art together! I love it so much!

Rachel's efforts to do things as sustainably as possible with this project after the feedback about Temu on the last video feels like a rare example of a creator listening to constructive criticism and showing effort to do better through their actions. Not surprising considering the integrity I'm used to seeing on this channel, but I still love to see it 💖
The problem is recycling is a lie the government spread to justify mass corporations producing so much waste. Almost nothing put into recycling bins actually gets recycled. But Rachel did great by reusing cardboard, paint, paper, and fabric she already had!
I had to go back because I literally forgot she got that hat off of Temu. Yeah super happy she's listening

Confession time- I love putting your videos in the background as I craft. Makes me feel like I have a crafting buddy especially when a finish date looms over head.

As a former theater kid, I will claim you as one of us! But one thing I learned in painting sets, they do have the flats on the ground when you paint them, but to save your back and the scene from getting walked on, you tape your paint brushes to a yard stick and paint from there. It does take some practice to get used to it, but it will make a huge difference in ease and comfort.

scene painting tip: save your back by attaching your brushes to painting sticks and painting while standing straight up. (Back when I did it we had bamboo sticks we would shove the brushes into and secure with a ton of rubber bands so the brushes could slide in and out for easier cleaning). There's definitely a learning curve to paint this way but it is well worth the effort!

I am a theatrical scenic painter, this is beautiful and wonderful but a helpful tip to save your back, get a bamboo stick and cut the end of so that you can stick your paint brush in there, if it’s too loose wrap a rubber around it. I hope that makes sense and helps, I promise it’s worth it.

The roller pole is life changing. Next time you paint a wall (like the one color painting, not the 'i'm going to paint Hobbiton' painting), use the pole. You'll save your hands and arms. I married to professional construction painter and he's taught me a lot. Thanks for another hour of fun, Rachel.
As someone who works at the paint counter at my local Lowes - Agreeable Gray and Aesthetic White are colors that I make quite frequently.
My opinion on both are neutral, they both have their place, and picking colors for your house is entirely subjective and depends greatly on the type of lighting each room gets.

Birch trees are my FAVORITE. Their branches sway and whoosh like a willow, they have the white bark and black knots like big old aspens, but are smol enuf for almost any yard, and they have the most fun fidgety seeds. The tree equivalent of a dandelion. So fun.
My goddess, just the background painted was incredible, and with the added trees it's just so chef's kiss! the dress, the hair, the vibe in the reveal actually gave me chills !

At 19:12 when you leave the barn to go unbox the dress, the way your head was tilted down and you could just see your adorable bangs sticking out through th hood, I could have sworn you turned into one of those cartoon-esque middle aged men with the big bushy brows and mustache for our childhood animations!

I've done many a painted theatre set in my day and since I've gotten a working craft room I've fantasized at times about turning it into a cardboardified birch forest. Especially because I come into contact with a lot of cardboard in my job. I always feel like Rachel's videos are permission to follow my heart. 😅
The last show I worked sets on just last month was literally built from mostly cardboard. Cardboard trees, cardboard logs, cardboard leaves. Some wooden under-structure, but the form and surface was ALL cardboard. It can be a very versatile material!
Your backdrop was beautifully painted- of course it was; we know your mural skills! And the trees were beautiful. A magical setting for your dress-modeling; everything came together beautifully!
That reveal was just WOW! What a dress- and so beautifully framed by your set.

If you ever decide you want to do something like this again and want to add texture while keeping it paper and cardboard, paper mache is great for that! Either just working with strips of paper or blending the paper up to make some paper clay can get you some pretty cool results!

This project turned out beautiful! The dress is STUNNING, and the scene you made for the shoot for it made it all the more magnificent. You really brought it to life.
Bonus: I had the absolute pleasure of meeting you at Megacon. You were one of the many fabulous cosplayers there, but you don't have to do cosplay exclusively to be one of them. Something that I truly love about your content is that you are a very multi-faceted creator of things. You have a great many skills and interests. And that makes you even better at each of them. One of the best ways to better your craft (or any craft) is by learning as much as you can about everything and applying it to the project you are doing currently. You never know what skill come in handy one day. I don't know if you found it upstairs, but there was an entire panel that lasted the whole weekend in which you could just walk in and learn new skills. I got to learn soldering, and then had a lovely conversation with a competition cosplayer up there who was just part of the panel, showing how he made some of his stuff. Making all the things is an asset to cosplay! It is all part of the process and art!
This dress reminds me of Jonna Jinton's videos of the sounds of ice cracking beneath the surface- highly recommend. Beautiful gown, beautiful set and beautiful person ❤
