according to Adam Savage, the trick to shiny chrome spray paint is a base layer of GLOSS BLACK spray paint first. The shinier the gloss black, the shiner the chrome on top will be.
my design models teacher would pester me to the moon and back if I didn't add that metallic colours are notoriously finicky. you need to make sure the surface beneath it is *insanely* smooth and free of both dust and fingerprints to achieve a realistic metal finish. we do that on our presentation models by sanding it to oblivion, scraping on a super thing layer of plastic padding, wet sanding that layer to baby's-butt smooth perfection, then spraying on a solid layer or three of spray putty(?) and wet sanding that to death. and then we pray to all designer gods whilst spraying it with three layers of a *high quality* base coat, followed by just enough of the metallic paint that the surface beads start to melt together but not quite (they need to melt together slowly as the paint settles and dries, or else you end up with drips and that's a tragedy after so much work). if we pray hard enough and work hard enough we'll get lucky and trick our head professor into thinking it's truly metal. otherwise it'll still look really good after this process, *if* the base coat was good enough. we often seem to stumble on that base coat as the ones sold in the nearby stores are not quite good enough for metals.
@@matildas3177, sure but IIRC the Adam Savage comment was implying you'd notice any of surface scuffs/unevenness problems on the gloss surface BEFORE adding the chrome, so all things being equal a high gloss black base coat will be better than OTHER base coats (provided the paints are compatible because different brands' solvents can interact and absolutely RUIN itself by crinkling and crackling)
If you know Adam Savage then you know the gloss black is the second-to-last step in a complex process involving hours of smoothing, filling, sanding, cleaning, more sanding, filling again, and more cleaning and then sanding, and then...
With scale modeling, gloss black is usually the move too. Metallic paints are made by having a super fine reflective powder like mica or aluminum suspended in a tinted medium for whatever color you want, yellow for gold etc. By its nature it's a transparent paint, so the gloss under coat causes more reflecting and a brighter shine. But yes, if you were pouring days or weeks into this, you'd probably use something like bondo and filler wet sanding to get it as smooth as possible. Adam likes Moltow Chrome in the airbrush. Gives a brilliant shine.

Rachel i am constantly grateful for your videos. They are a little bit of sunshine for me. Your talent is unreal! Seeing your skills develop over the years (been watching you since before next competition) Has been amazing!!
the fact that Rachel doesn't know anything about or how to say "mugler" is half shocking to the core and half kinda cute like its innocently sweet but also at the same time concerning lol
yeah, anyone who's into sewing must have heard of Mugler, right? Although, ironically, it is a name of Germanic origin (from Alsace - that region that cannot decide which country it belongs to) and the English pronunciation Moog-ler is quite close to the proper German way of saying it, whereas the French use the u from _tu_ and pronounce the -er ending as in l'enfer.
Omgg I love that you did this!! Literally one of my favorite Thierry Mugler couture pieces 🤩 Last year I ironically used your original Zendaya armor video as reference in recreating this outfit, I would say I got a good 30% of the way done before life got in the way. Super proud of how the finished pieces came out tho and have used those individual pieces for photo shoots/going out. Amazing how similar our process was! I started with EVA foam cause like you said Worlba is expensive! However, I sealed in covered my foam with mirror chrome fabric to be closer to the finish of the original. My crafters audacity was going to have me try to conquer the helmet design in the original android suit 😵💫 This has honestly reinspired me to finish my recreation!! Thank you 💗
I have had my husband wrap me in plastic wrap and duct tape and draw a wonder woman costume on me so I know how weird it is. Also was amazed at how good my husband was at it. Like wow, skill you hopefully have never used before....Also, thank you for bringing up how expensive Worbla is. I often see cosplay videos that use it without talking about how much more expensive it is.
Just another amazing work. Well deserved and came out amazing! Can't believe almost four years of being part of this magical community you made for us Rachel. 😊
This is incredible! Also huge shoutout to Nick for once again being willing to wrap you up in plastic and duct tape 😁 If you aren't being called by costume designers for A list celebs by now, I'd be shocked. Your resourcefulness is just incredible, and being able to perform in time-crunch situations is crucial. Imagine what you could do with even more resources 😍
Thank you for sharing your week long experience, even the stressful portions! I can now envision taking on something like this at a slower pace and not feeling quite so lost just with some of your commentary. It looks so good for something done in a week that had so many pieces to it and I could see it being tweaked over time to fine tune it into something truly spectacular. make it your own and see how you could repurpose tis for a new look or just attending an event :)
Thank you for NOT "distressing" (at least for this video) as the final resulting armor was so SHINY and SO perfect. I am assuming that Rachel buys plastic wrap and duct tape on line because buying in the quantities needed for cosplay can be very "sus". Kudos to Rachel's SO for keeping to task and not dissolving into hysteria.
When you said, "Things can get pretty intimate" about the plastic wrap mold, it made me think of my grandma whenever she makes me clothes. If I'm trying the piece on and she has to put a pin or tuck or something on my bust she says, "I'm not trying to get fresh" and it is hilarious to me every time.
I love this crafty video far more than i like the actual original outfit. It just makes me think why.... Celebrities are just so far removed from reality that i just scratch my head and think what planet have i found myself on? Can i get a ticket off this crazy chunk of rock? This video although the costume is still WHYYYYYY??? the process of making rhe costume and the content itself is such fun!!
I would be cool to see a future rusted makeover video. An aged copper would be cool, maybe in a future distopia where we've had to go to space or an aquanautic version with domed helmet.
The way you can actually replicate a professional designers piece and absolutely nail it while also making one of your funniest videos yet… Madam. We don’t deserve you!
I definitely understand the feeling of making a rigid full body suit, feeling confident and then half way through realizing you know a lot less about anatomy than you thought. I have been making plate armour for a while now and wow was that a learning curve. Particularly making my back plate, especially when I'm designing it for myself and I can't see behind me, especially when it's hot quite often.
I think the only way a true replica could be made at reasonable cost would be 3d printing the chrome parts in plastic then thermo forming the clear from acrylic. Mugler probably had the original made with vacuum molded plastic at tremendous cost. It also comes out a lot different molded for a supermodel. (Linda Evangelista IIRC.) The costume has fascinated me for decades. And a lot of other people. As a designer Mugler has always puzzled me how a gay man could so spot on imagine the most attractive clothing a woman could wear. In the mid 90s his shows were epic, he certainly left his mark on the world.
Crafter's Audacity. My thought's exactly after watching you strip and refinish that apothecary cabinet, and having watched Nerdforge make a 13'x13' tufted howl's moving castle rug after making 1 rug to try out the tools. The crafter's audacity is the belief that any skill issue you might encounter should be similar enough to other skills that you can wing it and make it look great!
I thoroughly appreciate the duck tape part, as I have done this and was getting dizzy before we were done. It's not a feat that can be pulled off singlehandedly.
Seeing Zendaya's costume for the first time in this video, I was immediately torn between "Oh that looks kind of cool!(especially when moving)" and "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen". Anyway I can't deny that your reproduction of it was very skilled. Lovely job!
Never forget: * perfect is the enemy of done * no one but you knows about the difference between your plan and the result * most people only see the flaws when you point them out * the more projects, the more experience, the more improvement.
A trick to keeping anything rolled from rolling back up is to apply some heat when it is in its unrolled state. A hair dryer might work to keep the paper from rolling back up on you.
My dearest Rachel, you astound me! The crafers audacity is well placed in you! I am constantly both inspired and motivated by your projects, and your demeanor always lifts my spirits❤ you're such a beautiful human creature! I believe in you! You can do it!!
Reminds me of a story I read about a group of Hell's Angels who were on a long distance ride and got caught in the rain. One of them went to a grocery store, bought two rolls of saran wrap and wrapped himself up. He soon started shedding little snippets of plastic foil and arrived drenched in sweat, no less wet than the others.
When you said the words "what happens when she farts" I immediately thought of the shot of the raptor's hot nostril exhale in the kitchen door window from Jurassic Park.
I think armour-clad Zendaya lives rent free in all our heads. With good reason, she's majestic! Amazing job on the suit of armour Rachel, it looks spectacular on you!!!
Might I suggest getting a vacuuforming machine? It will be a lot easier and much cheaper than using Worbla for everything to create your molds and more properly stretch the shapes (especially clear ones) and then regular spray paints will work fine. Added bonus is that you can sometimes use a heat gun to make adjustments... but that can get twitchy because the stretched plastic may want to return to original shape... The video AND the project came out quite inspiring and fit the style, if not the reality, close enough to get a double thumbs up from me! Great job in only a week! If I knew someone that would wear one, I would *almost* be interested in trying to do it myself... Well.... yeah right, like I have time for "Yet Another Project" Thank you! Excellent AND entertaining work!
Loved the video. Got quite a laugh off the dog kisses at the end. BTW if you had an Amazon wish list people could buy you worbla and other things. Just a thought.
It is definitely impessive that you made it in a week, but given the price of worbla and the perfectly smooth surface of the OG armor, I kinda wish you would give yourself more time and make it more clean.

Also huge shoutout to Nick for once again being willing to wrap you up in plastic and duct tape 😁
If you aren't being called by costume designers for A list celebs by now, I'd be shocked. Your resourcefulness is just incredible, and being able to perform in time-crunch situations is crucial. Imagine what you could do with even more resources 😍
Your in between comments are just as entertaining as the actual work. What a talent you have as a creator.
It turned out so great! 😄 excellent content 👏👏👏 Party in Arrakis! Lol 😂
I lost count of how many times this made me laugh out loud. you remind me of me in a nice way. I'll see you next time
Thank you for NOT "distressing" (at least for this video) as the final resulting armor was so SHINY and SO perfect. I am assuming that Rachel buys plastic wrap and duct tape on line because buying in the quantities needed for cosplay can be very "sus". Kudos to Rachel's SO for keeping to task and not dissolving into hysteria.
The way Nick didn't even flinch when you asked him to draw a straight line from your neck to your buttcracklol
i saw beyoncé wear the armor back in 2009 and fell in love with thierry mugler’s work 🥺 i’m so glad zendaya is introducing a new audience in 2024
Rocket man is one of my favorite movies and nobody ever talks about it!!!
Good call on leaving out the butt cups 😂 it looks incredible. Bravo!
Whenever I need motivation to get to sewing (adhd paralysis sucks) I put on your videos ❤
I saw this outfit on the carpet and immediately my Rachel senses started tingling!!! This is awesome
Nick must either go around shaking his head or is ecstatic about which character he’ll find in bed at night…..or both.
Great job Rachael.
Frills & Gills sounds like a shop for the FANCY scuba diver.
“Goblin mode” that outfit is cuteee
Very reminiscent (to me anyway) of some of the costumes in Barbarella! Excellent work.
This is amazing! I love how realistic you are about the crafting process. I swear half of my process is just going "ow" "ow" "ow"
Omg Nick is just the sweetest, my hubby would be… less patient with me 😂
I love some of the little pieces you have for decor, like the mechanical calculator. It's like getting easter eggs in each video.
I always want dark crystal skesis finger forks. Your armor is amazing an you have an amazing costume to pull ouf and wow with
I'd highly suggest getting some teflon sheets, as they are heat safe and pretty easy to clean, Definitely a better option than a cutting mat 😆
PLEASE do a video about weathering it!! I'd love to see what you do with that :D
5:43 As a French speaker, my brain did a little flip lol
rachel you did an amazing job!! so cool that you could recreate such an iconic mugler piece in a WEEK! 🙌✨
both outfits are reminiscent of barbarella and my little gay nerd heart is just squee i love this
Seeing Zendaya's costume for the first time in this video, I was immediately torn between "Oh that looks kind of cool!(especially when moving)" and "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen". Anyway I can't deny that your reproduction of it was very skilled. Lovely job!
I now desperately need a green tank like yours cuz omg 😍
Never forget:
* perfect is the enemy of done
* no one but you knows about the difference between your plan and the result
* most people only see the flaws when you point them out
* the more projects, the more experience, the more improvement.
if you have a over size ruler you can flip over the paper scroll and prevent it from curling up since it will curl down at the floor
hahaha! CrAFTERS AUDACITY is the peRFECT PHRASE!!! It's genius!
A trick to keeping anything rolled from rolling back up is to apply some heat when it is in its unrolled state. A hair dryer might work to keep the paper from rolling back up on you.
I often iron my kraft paper flat ❣️ it adds an extra step but it helps a lot by removing that rolling frustration
My dearest Rachel, you astound me! The crafers audacity is well placed in you! I am constantly both inspired and motivated by your projects, and your demeanor always lifts my spirits❤ you're such a beautiful human creature! I believe in you! You can do it!!
Soon as I saw this, I was like "Barbarella..."! I love it! :)
NICE! Goodmorning from the Saturday Morning Straggler! Pancakes, hot cocoa and Rachel's Audacity, Perfection!
This intro dress is gorgeous...all those Dune colours
Bugle Witch Fingers!…. Omg a classic!😅
When you said the words "what happens when she farts" I immediately thought of the shot of the raptor's hot nostril exhale in the kitchen door window from Jurassic Park.
I love that Nick just goes with it
I think armour-clad Zendaya lives rent free in all our heads. With good reason, she's majestic!
Amazing job on the suit of armour Rachel, it looks spectacular on you!!!
0:20 Oh! That’s some Hajime Sorayama design!
1-2-3 blocks are great for holding paper down so it doesn't roll back up on you.
The armour reminds me of the Torchwood cyberman cyberwoman design
Loved the video. Got quite a laugh off the dog kisses at the end. BTW if you had an Amazon wish list people could buy you worbla and other things. Just a thought.
I totally lost it at bugle witch fingers!
It is definitely impessive that you made it in a week, but given the price of worbla and the perfectly smooth surface of the OG armor, I kinda wish you would give yourself more time and make it more clean.
That outfit just makes me think of what Anakin would build if he had grown op to at least a teenager on Tatooine instead of Quigon saving him. 😂
I thought it was going to be a Barbarella costume video at-a-glance, you nailed calling it out on having '60's go-go' vibes
