- Here you will learn everything you need to know about weigh stations and how they operate. We talk about the purpose of the weigh stations and dive a little deeper into why you as a truck driver need to obey local and state laws as provided by the Department of Transportation for each state respectively.
Learn what DOT is looking for when you enter the weigh stations and what type of equipment do they use to visually inspect your tractor trailer even before you come close to the scale house.

Im so glade I run nights and local. Most of them are closed and I have bypass in the truck
Thank you for keeping our highways safe.
So far, this is the best scale-operations video I've seen on the interwebs. 👍🏿
Thank you very much! We try to make them informative yet interesting to watch and follow along. Appreciate the feedback!
There is an older one from FL DOT that is awesome too. It shows what DOT sees from inside the scale-house. Super cool.

@Avant-GardeFarm I watched that one a while back, pretty cool since I'm a truck driver and have passed through their twice
Thank you, very helpful information for new drivers.
If you run through an El Paso Border Patrol station, they have tons of imaging cameras. I think I counted nine different instruments setup on each side to detect smugglers.
The purpose of scales is to collect revenue
He missed the main purpose. If don't collect revenue there's no money to run the scale
It is the worlds best money grab.
You are correct 100% revenue generation that’s why Truck fines are twice as high and sometimes three times higher than cars I thought writing tickets for profit was illegal in our country have you ever noticed the right to travel does not include truck drivers sad but true
@Vinnie Gillotti Right to travel? You sound like a sovereign citizen. You have a right to travel. You do not have a right to travel in a vehicle. You do not have a right to do commerce in an illegal vehicle. Truck fines are three times as high because your vehicle is for commerce and three times as destructive and dangerous as a car
And to make sure your truck is not destroying the roads. Really not that hard
Go around scale house at every chance. The scale house/scale are revenue collection points.
Also, if you run tinted windows, make sure they are not to dark, and my suggestion would be either way, roll the window down on the side of the scale house.
I ran red gradient tinted windows on a company truck for years and never had a problem.
One of the trucks that I had been assigned was given to another driver, he rolled the drivers window halfway down crossing the EB MN Red River scale, he was required to remove all of the tinting before being allowed to leave the scale.
The reason that I know this is because I saw that truck later and asked what happened to the tinting, I was told the story, chuckled and asked if he had fun removing the tint from the drivers door window, response was, 'How the F#@$& did you get the tinting down inside the door so far, reply was, it was easy when I stole the glass and tinted it before it was installed before it was replaced into the door 😁😁😁.
That's actually a very good point and thank you for bringing it up. A friend of mine got fined 3 times before removing the tint. Apparently the officers didn't want to bother taking it down for him but it's not like he got away with it. Either way, tinted windows can and will get you in trouble.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
Much love to you guys miss you bunches hope yall are doing well ! 💗 very good stuff! 👍
Keeping a rig clean outside can be impossible when hauling live animals long distance. If you come from snowy, salt filled roads in QC, Canada and going to drop off in Phoenix, AZ, there is no way to go though a rig wash. I believe DOT officers know that.
Thanks buddy. You're a good dude!
Hi, interresting video to discover régulation in USA. Have the truck regularly have to stop in those stations ?
Everything to know about weight stations, never pull in one!
Thank you, very interesting
How does this affect transit motorcoach busses?
Go around scale house solves all problems
Very useful video
What if u get a bypass but the sign and flashing light says go in? Do you go in or bypass?
Arizona has thermal or X-rays camera's system
New cdl holder here. My question is, how do i know that i have to stop? What if im empty or well under 10,000 gvw . Also, its a beer delivery truck.. most of the guys say that they don't commonly encounter scales and if they do, they don't stop. I always do just to be on the safe side. Always under weight though.
So, your weight doesn't really affect whether or not you should enter the weigh station. If you drive a commercial truck, you should enter weigh stations (just like you're doing)
@@trxexpress thanks. That's what I always thought. Like I say, we deliver beer locally and most don't go far enough to encounter a weigh station but I do occasionally go out of town to pick up beer from a supplier, although only a few pallets but I still weigh.
been driving for 5 years, literally NEVER stopped at one of those & nothing has ever happened.. i didnt know i was supposed to until watching this video. i mean.. ive used the cat scales at loves a few times, im never overweight so idk.. 🤷♂️
I have to bring 5 ton truck from houston taxes to vancouver canada do i need to go through scale or not ?
Thank you so much.
4th day solo since I was released from trainer, what do u do if your heavy on a axle and u slide the tandems get all axles good, but your not within the bridge law?
I'm not sure i understand the question... not really sure what you mean by the bridge law. Different bridges have different axle weight ratings and gross weight ratings. If you're good on all axles but need to cross a bridge that has a lower axle weight rating than what you weigh, find a different path.... you wouldn't want to play the guessing game with your truck and bridges
Get a permit that's the only thing you can do I think
Weigh stations aren't based on safety anymore. It's a state piggy bank. Should be abolished.
Unfortunately you are correct to some extend. It may not be all weigh stations but most just look for a good payday.
@TRX Express That's really all I see them as. They don't prevent anything but the state going broke and truck from reaching its profitability that it once had pre 90s. I've been doing this for 23 years. Trucking used to be a lifestyle. DOT ruined that lifestyle.
Theyre a violation of the first amendment, and forth amendment. For sure!!!@onthemicwithtarencebaileys5684
Thank you sir
You're very welcome!
That’s MN AND FL SCALES IN THE VID.
sleeping at the wheel reduction d'tonneau ; through months
Wash the truck and trailer frequently also.
Yes sir! Good point!
26ft box truck have to go through weigh station? So my question is, what if im flying into pick up a box truck and drive it back home unloaded, would that qualify as driving it commercially if i just purchased it??
All you need is a valid drivers license and if it’s empty I wouldn’t worry about anything you don’t have to go through weight stations just drive it home.
thank you
What about usuals 16 foot
What if u miss a weigh station but u turn around on the first exit and go back?
Every driver must be held accountable for their own actions. It's not good to miss weigh stations, but we all know that we "miss" them occasionally. I've heard from a buddy of mine, who did exactly what you're asking, and he said that going back actually wasn't his smartest idea he'd done. They pulled him in for an inspection and gave him some bogus violations.
I'm not saying this happens all the time, but why would you want to poke the bear twice? That's all I'm saying.
Drive safe driver!
Absolutely not.
@@trxexpresswait, are you saying that you are supposed to stop at every single freakin one?? that doesn't sound right.. are you in the u.s? i thought theres like a light or something that turns on or flashes if you need to stop.. i never stop at those.. they always have a fuck ton of cops/dot ppl and they never pull me over or anything so.. this sounds bogus.. plus they have them everywhere why would you stop at every one of them? noone has time for that. they didn't teach about those at school.
I'm not a commercial driver but I have travelled using a U-Haul truck that weighted more than 10,000. Should I have stopped at weight stations? Thanks.
No
@@mybizz8542 some states require all rental trucks to cross the scales, the list of scales are listed in the front of the truckers Rand McNally road atlas.
A quick glance while at a truckstop will answer the question and you don't need to buy one just for that reason, just look and put it back.
Thanks for sharing! It's very informative.
Thank you for your feedback! We appreciate it.
@@trxexpress You’re welcome
i follow one simple rule... NEVER FKN STOP AT ONE!!!
I trucked for over 40 years and I can tell you ALL you wanna know about weigh stations : STAY Away from them! I never crossed an open weight station in my life !learn to read a map! Don't rely on gps to plan your route! Damn the DOT! Go around the scales, USE Your head!
😲
Hmmmm. Ok
Drive right on by them. Pretty simple.
So in 40 years of truck driving you've somehow never even gone through a weigh station yet you're an expert on them? What a dumb comment.
so you have never come up on the portable/mobile scales either?
New sub!!
Thank you!
Algorithm comment.. most the info seems like common sense. Was hoping to see the inside workings of the scale master and how the ez pass decides who gets bypass and who gets brought in. I do a lot of deadhead miles and sometimes get pulled in which makes zero sense
That's not a bad idea. We will do some research and do a more in-depth video regarding that. Thank you for your comment
How a Florida weigh station works”, is a great video to see some of the inner workings . As far as the EZ pass goes it’s my understanding that part of the decision wether or not to grant a bypass is based on the trucks and or the companies safety score/record. From the time it reads your EZ pass at the first overhead scanner till you get to the 2nd scanner the computer knows everything there is to know about your records
@David Rigoni yes, matter of fact we referenced that video here as well. I do believe they could've made it a little shorter though but still a good video. Regarding the PrePass, we just uploaded a video on how it works. Thank you for your input.
10,000 Lbs? Just the truck or what? I often tow a total weight (truck & trailer) around 14,000 - 16,000 lbs. Scale? Haven't scaled yet, not for business.
Every state has varying laws on who (What type of vehicle/tractor-trailer) needs to stop at a weigh station. I believe the general rule of thumb is if your truck ( or combination vehicle) is over 10,000 lbs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) it must scale. I am not 100% if that applies to you (for personal use), but I would assume it would if the truck is registered as a commercial vehicle. If the truck is not-for-hire then I think you should be ok to legally bypass weigh stations.
However, please do no rely on any commentary on the internet, if you want to be 100% sure, give the DOT or FMCSA a call and ask them. People tend to say whatever they want just to get it their way. So do your due diligence and contact the proper authorities if you don't want to get in trouble.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your comment by the way. We will do some additional research and may do a separate video on that topic.
Not a commercial vehicle, stay off the scales!
If the second was true, removing unqualified drivers, then obviously their not doing their job. So, it's safe to say it's to collect revenue because I do believe everything has a purpose.
Convoy, where as the Duck?
Hello! I give video courses and safety courses to hispanic drivers. Can I have your permission to translate your video to Spanish and use it for the drivers? Thanks in advance.

Wear and tear in the vehicle dont count this guy dont know squad okay

Weight stations explained, MONEY 😂😂
👍👍
Get funding by lining their pockets with federal tax money.

Drive at Night 🌙 😎 and trip plan around them during day if convenient. Doesn't matter if you're 100% legit and legal with a brand new truck, DOT can OOS you if they choose to, their system is more rigged than a casino!
That's his problem if he hit me from behind
Interested video but truck are more complicated to operate then Plane there is more inspection more paper work and more responsabilities then airplane. Its a money maker for the Goverment and trap cather $$$
yes they are, that's why they require 100% of the drivers attention. Thanks for your input!
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🚍 *RVs, like motorhomes and trailers, usually don't need to stop at weigh stations.*
00:27 🏞️ *State regulations vary; some states require all RVs to stop, while others have relaxed rules based on weight limits.*
00:55 🚫 *Stay informed about your state's laws and ensure your RV doesn't exceed weight limits to avoid unnecessary stops and delays.*

If someone is so stupid they need to have this broke down for them,…. They don’t need to be in a truck,.. PERIOD!!!
Thank you for your comment Roy. I understand that for drivers that have been on the road for a while this information is redundant and pretty much common sense, but trust me, new drivers need this. There are a lot of new drivers out there that are just getting started with trucking and actually don't know what proper weigh station etiquette is.
Inexperienced drivers need this type of information but are either too proud to ask for advice, or ashamed to ask because they might get roasted or something. Just think back to your beginning as a truck driver and the advice you got that helped you further your career in the trucking industry. The only difference nowadays is that most information is in digital form.
School trained steering wheel holders are NOT tought this kind of stuff in school!
I completed CDL-school last week. As part of the training, i specifically asked the trainer to route us through the nearest weigh-station; He claimed to have been trucking for like 5years but that was his first experience going through the scales. He didnt have a clue what lane to use, what speed to go at, and what to do if we had the red-light (fortunately, we got the green). Needless to say, i asked the school for a different trainer and that next trainer didnt believe me when i mentioned the first trainer didnt know s$&@ about the weigh-stations
Edit to add: Apparently, i was the first student/trainee that that school took through the weigh-stations. And theyve been around for a while
I hold CDLs, but not a truck driver. I drive motorcoaches over the road and my safety manager recommended we watch this video because we're required to stop at weigh stations in some states. It's rude to ASSume all commercial drivers should know these things mentioned. The same way some truckers bully others at fueling stations...smh
