- It's common for us to say a vehicle has been reborn or even reimagined. But seldom do they get a complete reboot like the Mitsubishi Outlander has. It's not just a new version of a familiar design, but an all-new cooperative effort with partner Nissan. So let's hit the road in the new Outlander and find out if it’s a win for both Mitsubishi and for compact crossover buyers.

I've seen these on the road. They look even better in person.
You mean worse its the ugliest thing ive seen on the road today
@@infernoking7504 I would not say it's ugly looking. It just different up front.
Right... They are really nice
Yes indeed it looks better.
They are pretty sharp looking in person
I remember when John Davis used to call 8.5 sec 0-60 time 'blistering'; of course that was 35 years ago :)
Still perfectly fine for most people
@@allentoyokawa9068 It is; that's not the point I'm making, though.
Ordered a new 5.7 IROC back in '87, a bit faster than that to 60. 😁
Really shows how long John's been in the game, and doing it great ever since. As far as automotive television presenters, definitely the GOAT for sure.
Well the 2nd Gen did 0-60 in 7 seconds, 3rd Gen in an estimated 6.5. This is definitely a downgrade.
By far this is the best Mitsubishi interior on any model any year.
Na the 91 Diamante is cooler
That’s probably painful for Mitsubishi to hear, as it’s not even their interior. 😅
Looks a lot like a RAV4
It’s a great Exterior as well!
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 The first year of the Diamante was a good looking car.
can we just take a moment to acknowledge the freakishly tall 3rd row headrests?
The seat backs are so short. I wonder if that was done to make them foldable. Regardless, I don't know why they bothered with a third row at all.
Look up crash tests for rear end collisions with a truck and you'll see why they're so tall.
You're concerned about the freakishly 3rd row?? My God the entire vehicle is a freakshow.
@@audieconrad8995 yet here you are watching a video that was made specifically about it.
@@Labios_Rotos ohhhhkaaay...and your point is?
Such a good-looking crossover (and I’m no crossover fan), let down by that horrid and tired Nissan powertrain (the CVT being the big letdown-I think the engine is fine and would be better with a real transmission). I would much rather have a Mitsubishi drivetrain.
I'm glad they're making it look different.
The 3 liter Mitsubishi V6 was legendary. My daughter had a 1999 Eclipse with one, and it was a rocket!
Mitsubishi Parts are more Expressive than Nissan Parts, I work for both company's
@@sannissansanjuan5074 do they hold up better?
@@dontelindsey5846 yes Mitsubishi is more reliable than Nissan
Just pick up my 2022 outlander love it . I don't know how much horsepower you want on a small crossover. Acceleration and Power is great. So far so good no complaints. My Third Mitsubishi
So great how it's modern show but still feels like the original show thank you
Every time I see a Mitsubishi Outlander in traffic I have to yell out “outlander!!” the same way Malachai did in Children of the Corn.
A turbo-4 at 250h/250t and an Aisin or ZF 8-speed trans and this thing would rule the world....
If this just had more power, it’d be a home run fore Mitsubishi… It’s a VERY nice looking vehicle!
It's hard to believe its based upon the Nissan Rogue. Nice styling inside and out. One of my co workers has one in black and its nice.
The 07’ V6 took 8.9 seconds to hit 60 in their test. Loved that car, and the engine sounded great… but this car beats the old one, and that had 220hp.
I think it's because of the CVT keeping the engine at full power all the time
Insignificant tiny engine for that land boat. Outside looks good .
Wow great review by John of MotorWeek. Have been waiting for the MotorWeek review for the last couple of months on the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. Motorweek is one of the best reviewers of Automobiles I trust there judgement and review on the new outlander. Absolutly with car cost skyrocketing car manufacturers now have to share the bill. John, love the way you said a co-operative effort with partner Nissan....And as far as i am concerned its a true Mitsubishi!!(*newest Toyata Supra shares BMWs platform, This is what is happening in car manufacturering today and going forward----sharing platforms). Marvelous review, yes Mitsu fan here waiting on the New PHEV Mitsubishi Outlander.
This SUV is a front end redesign away from being one of the most attractive SUVs on the road; the wacky headlight/grill arrangement ruins the look imo.
like you said that is YOUR opinion
@@allentoyokawa9068 Since I've already said it, there's no point of YOU repeating it.
Agree. The front end is a deal breaker.
I remember looking forward to this show in my not too steady youth years- it brought some comfort and
regularity- great memories
Good to see this man and his show still thriving in the niche he so sucessfully filled.
Thanks bro
Went to the local Mitsubishi dealership to see this with my sister and her husband. It looks really good in person and the ES with the Convenience Package was well equipped. If I was in the market for a crossover I would get it honestly. I had a 2014 and 2018 Outlander Sport and they were adequate vehicles.
I got the ES S-AWC with the convenience package and I love it
Only adequate?
I was behind an Outlander SEL with S-AWC in local, stop and go traffic. It seemed to not only accelerate just fine, it was well ahead of me by the time we hit subsequent traffic lights.
I REALLY like this vehicle. It goes plenty fast enough, you just have to know the sweet spots in the torque curve under different conditions.
I love the way mine handles on the highway, in both dry weather and in the rain
Nice interior and rear taillights but so underpowered with a front end only a mother could love.
Yea the powertrain is like wtf
This isn't a performance suv. It has just enough power.
Most midsized suvs are adopting that front end style. I think they were able to do the split headlights with a unique touch. Chevy, Hyundai, and a few others also have the split headlights on some of their midsize
This car handles like a sports car! Plus the interior feels like a Lexus with only a fraction of the price! Plus the reliability rate of this car is rated very high by both "repairpal" and "jd power". I hope to buy this car soon 🤞
John Davis is the only person I want to ever hear on this channel. Whenever it’s not him, the video does not get watched by me. (:
The only thing holding this back is the CVT transmission. Otherwise, a massive improvement from the previous generation, though I would still choose a different vehicle. Toyota should pay attention on how to make an interior that doesn't feel cheap.
The only way I would get one is if it had a 8AT, and V6 engine
@@kheirfrancis22 Montero Sport has that. But I guess you can't get it in US so... 🤷♂️
@@aaryeshg.6526 not to mention, Mitsubishi pulled the rip cord on the Montero/Pajero in Japan not long ago, allegedly.
@@LoyalmoonieProductions Yeah they just didn't really invest in updating the normal Pajero/Montero. Instead they spent on improving the Sport model which it really needed.
The previous gen Sport model had an underpowered V6 and a 4 speed auto, the current one solves both those issues thankfully and actually sells well.
The CVT scares me. It'd be a deal breaker.
I own this monster. There is NO CAR that compares to the handling feel and ride quality of outlander. This is sooo good on gas too. I get 14km per litre on the 80km speed highways and around 13km on 100km highways. This is the best car out there
Wish it gets a V6 and an automatic.
Yes why they omitted the in house V6 is beyond me
Still better than the previous 4 cyl Outlanders (not sure why comparing V6 with a 4 cyl).
Also this big thing doing close to 30 mpg is good, I don't think a V6 would ever get close to that.
@@aayonce4 - it is simple... Mitsubishi Auto is ON DEATH SENTENCE once Nissan got their paws into it. Besides, the Mitsu V6 had only 215hp (same engine as the Dodge Caravan had as an option eons ago), woefully inadequate for a 3.0L.
Nissan doesn't have in their parts bin any engine between this NA-2.5L 181hp Rogue engine and the ~ 250hp "2.0L" VC Turbo offered in the Altima (it is used on the Infiniti QX50 and 55, so they won't sell an Outlander with this engine, although it could be "nice to have" as an option).
Any engine with a 215-230hp output is what this Outlander (Rogue XL in reality) needs.
@@syxepop the 3.0 V6 on the outlander did 225hp and around 230 lbft of torque.
@@aaryeshg.6526 the 2.4 from Mitsubishi does more power and is more reliable than the Nissan, at least put that in the new one.
it's a cool car but a Nissan CVT.....Cmon Mitsu
Mitsu don't call the shots anymore, and sure they use CVTs in the past but I feel their programming was better than Nissan's is
@@Brads_adventures like fr Nissan CVTs can't last 150000 miles while Mitsu CVTs actually last a decent time for a CVT.
@@tigranmelconyan5562 the funny part is… they’ve always been the exact same CVT and shared with many Nissan products since 2006. Mitsubishi just programmed the hardware different and used CVT oil coolers more liberally than Nissan… which means Mitsubishi was responsible for its own tuning and I highly doubt much has changed there especially with a high liability 10 year warranty behind it
@@Brads_adventures Mitsubishi has always used Jatco CVTs and this one has a CVT8 with Mitsubishi INVECS III programming 🙄
I’ve been driving one for two weeks and am so impressed by this car. I might have to buy one for myself.
Mitsubishi is still here. And John Davis is still here. Thank The Lord.
I like the way these look for what it is. I though a v6 was still available, however.
I love Love my Mitsubishi! It’s beautiful and perfectly powerful for me and plenty of space! Great on gas , not to mention the panoramic sunroof And it’s top of the line in crash course! Blessed 🥰
Replace the CVT with a DCT and Nissan and Mitsubishi would have a winner even with the 2.5 i4. 181hp is just adequate for this vehicle. A more powerful option would be welcomed.
Friend down under has one a few years old with the 2.2 Litre Turbo Diesel with a 6 speed Torque converter trans. I like it, good torque, If I wanted one of those thats the power plant and trans I would want.
@@adoreslaurel - problem is any Diesel engine, thanks to VW's Dieselgate (U$40K Mln and counting) requires a hugely LONG APPROVAL TIME (as in 1-2 YEARS) by US-EPA and the take % is so low in US that manufacturers are no longer willing to make the financial case for any Diesel engine use besides larger pickup trucks and BOF SUV's.
@@syxepop I suppose Californian requirements are top of the list when it comes to harsh emissions legislation.
@@adoreslaurel - actually the biggest problem on Diesel engines is the US-EPA as they take "their sweet time" to certify an engine (again, thanks to VW). Just ask Ford US, as they couldn't certify the 2TD-2.0L I4 from the T6 Ranger Raptor for use in the large US-spec Transit vans.
For gasoline / petrol engines it is CARB, which not only regulates California's state emissions, but another 10 US States as well (clumped mostly in both East and West Coasts).
@@syxepop You do have some odd restrictive regulations over there, for some time, certain headlight designs meant some manufacturers {Like M/Benz] had to put in round headlights, very odd, yet whilst your big trucks have mud flaps on the rear wheels, you can get away with a hot rod having no fenders, chuck stones gravel etc, can never figure that one out.
I love the little hidden criticisms that he puts into his lines. "If you love this Outlander as much as we do, you'll be happy to know that there will be a plug in Hybrid soon".
i'm in love with my 2022 outlander !😄
Got ours couple months ago soon as it was unloaded at dealership. Love ❤️ it. Power is more then fine for what it is. Not a Mustang or Charger, lol 😂
"Not a Mustang or Charger" lol, you are spot on. Congratulations on getting one.
@@habeebmirza2723 thanks 😊. Only complaint I have is the gear ⚙️ selector. Like most new ones, makes no sense, lol 😂
I also agree, the power was fine and moved nicely through the CVT
@@timgoldsmith17 yes, just got back from 1,000+ mile beach 🏝 trip. Performed very well. 3 adults, luggage 🧳 & tons of outlet shopping 🛍 stuff fit in there.
It should have been given a V6 engine option with 8 speed automatic instead of CVT which would have made it sell like hot cakes... dont know what mitsu were thinking when they took away this option...
Fuel economy
love the show !!
Wish they come out with a larger one like the Grand Cherokee size. Anemic engine and tiny 3rd row are negatives. If they came out with a larger model I'd consider it. Good honest review. Thank you for telling us the good and bad.
Fuel economy
How does it compare to the earlier groundbreaking MIVEC engine Tech of Mitsubishi? Like our neighbor had a 2.4L MIVEC engine and it was butter smooth.
I own one and is the 2time check engine light turns on and they dont now why
I love motor week!
I’m sure it’s a very nice car…. But I remember when Mitsubishi was unique and awesome. My first new car was a 1988 dodge colt the traded for a 91 colt turbo… awesome then traded up to a used 1991 eclipse gsx twin turbo and!!! Awesome car again! Ahhhh the good old days
I wish they'd bring back the Montero Sport...nice rugged SUV.
Yes it exists except you guys in US don't get it.
These look so good in person I just wish their was a better engine and transmission
THAT IS A GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY. THANKS FOR SHARING.
Got a 2010 outlander V6 and thought it is adequate. They need to bring the V6 back or even a turbo 4 to this new Outlander.
How did they allow that front end to make production? Looks like something out of National Lampoons.
The styling alone will sell a lot of these. The drivetrain, alone, will put this up on a lot of dealer racks, soon.
You get a ton for your money, but as nice as it is it makes you wonder if they couldn't have gone just that little bit further. It's as well put together as an entry-level Audi or BMW, so you'll be wondering "why couldn't it have ventilated seat?" or "why did they skip the alcantara headliner" or "seems they could have felted this glove box" or "why no stitching on this horn"
Ok so I’ve seen this car in person and it looks great but my problem is I have a rav4 v6 sport and the power is amazing so I can’t see myself getting use to this engine.
Sad. I love the Mitsubishi's I've owned in the past. I don't want a Nissan with the crappy CVT.
I'm pretty sure the new Pathfinder and Outlander now have a 9 speed auto.
Edit: oof never mind. What a disappointment
@Capsized Cloud exactly,Hyundai and Kia are putting Nissan and Mitsubishi to shame
@Capsized Cloud No one asked for Hyundai and Kia.
The last gen used a Nissan/JATCO CVT, the Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross and Mirage do too. If it's a Mitsubishi with a CVT, it's using a JATCO unit.
@Capsized Cloud What do you mean no one asked for Mitsubishi? People here in the comment section are talking about Mitsubishi.
When it come to Vietnam?
Needs the V6 to go with the look.
I'm quite fond of the previous Outlander model (although I may be a bit biased, since my mom owns one at the moment and has been a loyal Outlander fan for 13 years), and while I think this one looks excellent, that powertrain is disappointing. When a brand new Mitsubishi has lower horsepower and acceleration figures than my 8-year-old Hyundai Tucson, you know something's wrong.
Also, I'm surprised at the lack of a brake test. I feel like braking was a bit of a weak point on the previous generation Outlander, feeling a big spongey to me, so I was curious to see how this one would do.
Fuel economy
Unless you get a turbo 8.5 seconds 0-60 is completely in line with any other compact crossover on the market with a base engine. That said, you can get an optional turbo or hybrid that'll be faster in most of them... for more $$ of course.
One thing not mentioned is that two rims blades face forward and the otherside they face backwards. MAKE THEM BOTH DIRECTIONAL.
Then it's a mess when it comes to rotating tires, which is HIGHLY recommended.
Not sure why all Australian and nz versions are clocking 0-60 over 10s. 2s is a big difference.
I'll stick with my 05 Montero. We also have a 2016 Outlander and I really see no need to upgrade.
Always liked the Montero.
Outlander Goes Mainstream
May the GT V6 be launched again with this new generation Outlander soon, but this time, much more improved than the previous one:
-3.0L V6 gas now packs a much more modern DOHC with Variable Valve Timing , and now with a 290hp @ 394Nm
-6spd Auto now upgraded with a 10spd one
-and now boasts an autonomous drive system
To help it now evolve into Mitsubishi's largest offering in the US too, after the Montero and the Endeavor
Wishing Mitsu can bring back the Lancer or Galant/Diamante based on current Nissan sedans
Mitsu won't arrive to the '26MY in US at this rate... Mitsu tried to do both Lancer and Galant using Renault-Samsung facilities in South Korea, but Nissan rejected it (the equivalent cars there use Sentra and Altima bodies and mechanicals).
Never trusted cvt, especially Nissan. Had Mitsubishi before, never a problem. This one is great. Hope it holds up because I helped my daughter get one awc s. Disagree totally on power. If I want a race car I’ll buy one. We changed tires to bf Goodrich trail t/a
... nice vehicle but 181/181😒, maybe a cpu flash might help it out a lil something if possible🤔
Maybe the +200lb / 90kg from the Rogue doesn't help. The Outlander needs to rise output to 215-230hp with the same weight.
Was that a fall out boy reference 😉🤣
I have this car and I can tell you 0-60 is awful but once you hit around 55 and up especially at mid 90’s she flys. Very nice for a 4 banger
With a 10 year power train warranty to boot this is a smart buy.
Not as smart a buy as a rav4.
Definitely not a smart buy.
Copying Hyundai and Kia?
@Capsized Cloud lol I'd take the Japanese built Mitsubishi over the Korean Kia and Hyundai that catches fires with no reason like a McLaren
@@mariatejero9430 lol have fun with that grandpa mentally of “made in Japan” being “better”, yes the Korean Hyundai and Kia is so bad that they are quickly increasing sales numbers worldwide when the “quality made in Japan” Mitsubishi is failing worldwide pulling out world markets
Mitsubishi Outlander ❤️
W140 videos guys pls
So it has Nissans CVT transmission famous for catastrophic failure conveniently after warranty period
8.5 sec is not that bad.
If this had a turbo I'd take it over pretty much every option in the segment. Leaning towards Mazda atm
I’m with Sammy T. I can’t believe that 0-60 times like this are considered leisurely.
Ty
Way to go mitsubishi.
Nice 👍!
Needs the Raider V8
The front of this car looks so tall. I wonder how easy it is to see over it. Probably not very!
For the price point I’d go with another brand. I also not a fan of CVT transmission
So it has a 2018 Altima power train
this car looks stunning for comfort and all, ALMOST everything you need in an SUV. I'm ashamed that it has an engine for more efficiency, and not having that OOMF that a strong, unified car would have. I drive a 2008 volvo xc90, and that thing, that things OOMFS. V8 4.4 L
Just sad to see strong SUVs be converted to efficient nowadays...
I owned 2 XC90s with V8s. This is only about 1.5 seconds to 60 MPH slower, 7 vs 8.5. It's not horrible in real world driving.
I really don’t understand the complaining of the shared use of the CMF-C/D platform… yet a Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento/ Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are gods gift to the automotive world and exempt from scrutiny for the exact same concept.
Spot on
@Capsized Cloud really
It’s because Hyundai and Kia know how to make a working vehicle that’s also desirable unlike Nissan and junksubishi
@Capsized Cloud I'd take the new Outlander the new Tuscon looks sad and the new Sportage copied Mitsubishi's Dynamic Shield design with their DRL's and it looks ugly also the Quality is better because it's made in Japan
@@joskjj3625 junk lol hahahahaha I'd take Mitsubishi over some brands that have tons of recalls lol
Mitsubishi of Indonesia, please sell this!
mitsubishi should really rethink their strategy or just pull out of the US in general if they really think copying a nissan rogue would make them more popular
What copy
Your nuts. They are selling more cars than they ever have in the US at the moment.
@@MrNuggetface truee
It looks like a Ford Explorer and BMW X4 had a baby
Since all these crossovers have basically the same shape. Designers get funky with the nose of the vehicle to stand out.
Seems to be underpowered with that engine but nice looking suv
Why does everything about this video feel like it's from 1998?
The music is way too loud. You don’t need music for car video.
A face only a mom could love
Stuff that pathfinder/qx60 power train in there!
Should have put in the new Pathfinder's 3.5 and 10 speed transmission. Then again, it'd be 40k.
my stepdad is getting this car soon
Does it have a spare tire?
Love the interior. Hate the front end. Not that anyone cares what I think.
Mitsubishi ❤️😎
i know damn well this man did not call this 3 row a damn compact suv
It’s the compactiest 3-row crossover on the market I’m pretty sure.
It is just +1" / 25mm longer than the 2-row Nissan Rogue, so you can see how cramped that 3rd row might be.
I know right, it’s a mid-size SUV for crying out loud. I saw one standing next to a Sorento and it looked bigger, even if it was by a little bit.
The CVTs on both Nissan and Mitsubishi are made by JATCO. Their push-belt CVTs are horrible. Why don't they use chains on their CVTs, like Subaru and others?
I’m sure everyone is using chains nowadays
Subaru is having their fair share of issues with their CVTs, possibly worse than JATCOs updated CVT8.
CVT has problems regardless of manufactures. Some worse than others
Put a damn V6 inside!
Really nice suv why in the world they put a weak motor in it.
Daring front end
The engine will limit sales. 181 hp for such a big vehicle.
