The warranty on the Outlander is a huge reason to get it over the Rogue. Surprised it wasn't posted in your bullet points for the comparison. Its what would have me going with the Outlander over the Rogue.
Warranty doesn't mean much when the service sucks and there are so few dealerships so you can't just go to the next one a few miles away. You are pretty much stuck with that 1 dealership unless you want to travel 100+ Miles.
Had two 2010 Mitsubishis and never even needed to use the warranty on either. Most reliable cars we ever had.

I really liked the Outlander on a test drive, the issue I had was, we only have one dealership in Vegas and they have marked them up by $6k....Yeah almost a 20% mark up. For a brand that is in zombie mode right now that is really pretty stupid.
it could be becuase of a supply shortage with those markups.
It’s not Mitsubishi marking it up, it’s s the dealer owner. It’s becoming way too common in the industry. I will not buy any vehicle with a dealer markup/addendum.

They expect you to be there for 8 hours to talk them down a couple of grands. Who's got time for that? There are other options.
I always kinda root for Mitsubishi, I used to have a Dodge Colt and serviced computers at Mitsubishi dealers. I think I would rather have the spare tire than the 3rd row, so it would be hard to choose between the Rouge and Outlander. I think overall the Mitsubishi looks better and you won't see yourself coming and going like in a Rouge.
Go with the Outlander ! Way better styled and just an overall better vehicle than the rogue I feel like the rogue has been the same car from 2013
I just bought one and really dont need the "3rd Row" that barely fits my 10 yr old boy. Always going to keep those seats down and out of the way.
I grew up o. A oil refinery. My dad had company cars drove around all the time, a Toyota FJ Cruiser, a Mitsubishi Pajero, and a VW Squareback. Mitsubishi was really good back in 1970s. They were equivalent to Toyota then. I miss those Mitsubishi.
The 3ed row seats are just "as needed only" but still a welcome feature

It will be interesting to see if the Outlander gets the new 1.5T VC engine like the Rogue is getting for 2022. The extra torque and horsepower would definitely make it more sporty.

I really wish those headlight washers would make their way to the Rogue. Loved having them on my Saab but I don't need the third row and want the new 1.5T in the Rogue.

Two things they lost from the last gen I will miss is my 2018 has a spare under the bottom and the older model had a GT 6 cylinder model which gave that underpowered line the power it really needed. Wish they would’ve kept those options

Other than the lack of acceleration and CVT, it’s the best looking vehicle in its class…looks a bit like a Land Rover. Lots of features and handsome interior.

They are reliable and have a great warranty. Most people that buy Nissan, Mitsubishi aren't really concerned about resale values

I just got my outlander se and I love it.
I am not sure if Alex carries a beef against the CRV. Conspicuously it was missing from the overall length chart and he failed to speak about it as one of the competitors. I understand it is a bit dated, however it is still the second best selling compact SUV after RAV4.
we just got the 22 SE model and it’s a great buy! really worth it.
For me definitely outlander over the competition, better price, i love the design, interior feels premium. Its a great car for famillies too.
but to car seats fit in them
22' Rogue gets 1.5 VC-Turbo and Jatco CVT-X (Xtronic). Further separation of Outlander & Rogue. Outlander PHEV gets the 4J12.

My wife just handed in her lease & I'm next. We're looking for a 3rd row SUV, but they're so expensive & the tech I want just adds more to the price tag. You give a lot of info here, which I really appreciate. The 3rd row is a bit tight, but like you said it's for emergencies & short drives. A lot to think about, but I definitely have my wife interested in checking this out 👍🏽

In Australia the Exceed Tourer which is the top of the line model comes with a blacked out roof a space saver spare tire and massaging seats in a freaking Mitsubishi

IDK. The 3rd row is so small as to be almost pointless. And then you have more weight and less cargo space 100% of the time. Otherwise not a bad rehash or the rogue and will be more appealing if it gets the new 3 cylinder going in the rogue
Those low HP/torque numbers are reminding me of the also criminally underrated VW Tiguan.
The lack of second row headroom is due to this being a 2 row vehicle that has a 3rd row crammed into. That head space thats effectively between the second and third row is designed for the second row passengers of a 2 row rouge.
Why can't they make an option to get rid of imitation shifts? It honestly makes me wish there was an aftermarket option to reprogram these to just drive like a cvt should
People hate the dreaded CVT drone. I get what your saying though it would be cool to have a setting where you can have the simulated shifts or not.
@@craiggoldstein2461 they don't hate it, they think somethings wrong with the car since it doesn't make the usual sounds. They don't know why it makes the sounds it does, just that it makes those sounds. It's dumb af but people really are that stupid. Their solution was the fake shifts under heavy throttle but still behave like a cvt when under like 3000rpm
I had a 2008 outlander AWD with the V6 - if they put a larger engine in this - this would be my next car.

I think this the first time I saw Alex do a review on a Mitsubishi 😂 also I rarely see anyone drive it but back in the 90s I owned a 1994 Montero it last me about 10 years but they discontinued it for good 😌

I'm on my 3rd Mitsubishi, this time a PHEV, had it almost a year and have only ever seen 1 other one out on the roads. The lack of dealerships is a major problem and why I tend to get rid of my cars before the warranty is up.
I hear the Rogue is getting a New small VCT that has 200 some horse power. Hope this will get the same.
Short Story...A co-worker went to look at one of these and she said it was sooo soo nice inside and said same as you...If it has just a bit more power she would have Purchased it.
Alex great review as always, but one big thing your really should mention, out of the Japanese brands Mitsubishi has the best warranty. 10 years / 100,000 miles, plus it is made in Japan. I know the Koreans Kia and Hyundai also over 10 year/ 100,000 mile warranty, but The Mitsubishi gives so much for the price and seems so well put together.
Alex, 100% agreed the 3rd row is only for pinch needs. Yes would love to stuff my in law there but i'll have to hear it from the wife. You never know when you need the extra seats. This gives the flex but the pricing with shortage is not helping. This car would priced for about $2-3k below msrp at the very least but now it has inflated. Not sure if the resale of this will beat Rav4 or CRV in 3-6 years from now. Thanks again for the great review, keep it up. OH you know if they are working on the Hybrid version next year?
I just bought an SEL SAWC 3 weeks ago. It is a great car. While I would have loved another 30-40HP it actually does quite well in normal driving depending on how you drive. If you use 1/4 to 1/2 throttle it actually feels quite peppy and has no problem getting up to speed. It only feels a bit lacking in full throttle. So if you are a floor masher with the accelerator then this is probably not the car for you.
I think that’s due to where the torque comes in many people are still used to cars of yesteryear where you have to go through the rev range to get all of the satisfaction from the engine and power. For example my 2008 accord coupe 4cyl has max hp all the way at red line at 7k rpm and max torque around 4500 rpm so I have to rev it to get that “powerful” feeling .. and in my 2018 Alfa Stelvio I just have to press it about 10 percent and get only to like 2k rpm to feel power .
Once people understand the engineering and the concept of the newer designs I think they’ll appreciate them more. I work at Budget and Avis and I get to drive many different cars. One car in particular that really stood out to me was the Mitsu Eclipse Cross the power of that small 1.5t engine is commendable ! I actually was going to get that before I got my Stelvio and I’m being totally honest when I say that if I could trade I would ditch the Stelvio! That’s how good the eclipse is . Only gripe is the engine can be quite loud in the cross but I’ll crank up the toons and drift in the snow ❄️ 😀😀 in a perfect world 😅
@@aayonce4 So funny that you mention the Eclipse Cross and the Stelvio. I almost bought a Stelivo back in early 2019 but ended up with an Eclipse Cross, which is what I traded in for my Outlander. The EC was a great car I had a 2018 SEL SAWC and really did like it. Not a ton of HP but yes the torque along with the torque curve was spot on. Only traded it in because I needed something a bit bigger, loved the look of the new Outlander and absolutely fell in love with the "Black Diamond" color paint. Plus due to the chip shortage I was absolutely shocked with what they gave me for trade on the EC...600 less than I paid for it 3 years ago. Granted it was a leftover so I got a great deal when I bought it as the 2019's were out.....but literally drove it for almost 3 years and 27k miles for 600 depreciation on what I paid. I loved the Stelvio but was leary since it was its 1st year and Alpha does not have the best repair record...and of course it was double the cost. Plus Mitsubishi gave me 4k more than Alpha would on my trade, which was a 2013 Cadillac CTS4, even back then. So has the Stelvio been a good car? Still drool a bit when I see one :)

Love it for the power, handling, and exclusivity but I’m not sure they out weigh the cons .
Cons being;
Requiring premium gas, price of oil change, usability/functionality..
It’s a hard car to drive smooth being as though it has the drive by wire throttle, and in top of that the electronic brakes they just make the car feel jerky and uneasy at times.
Once you get acclimated to the quirks and how the car was intended to be used you start to feel the essence of the car shine through.
But STILL even with the smooth effortless power I still would grab an Eclipse Cross as it’s just as uniquely styled I’m getting older so raw power doesn’t mean much to me ( I’m 25 ) and back seat space and lack of recline feature in the rear makes me wish I shopped a bit more before making the decision.
But I plan on trading it in in the next year so I’m fine with it now but I definitely can’t say I’ll keep it til the loan is up.
It's a nice car, but if Mitsubishi actually makes the Ralliart version that they teased, then I'll totally buy it.
The 3rd row in my 2019 Outlander GT looks spacious compared to this redesigned model. Otherwise I like the newer interior better. Too bad the V6 is gone. I bought mine for doing limited towing (3500lb limit) without being forced to drive around in a massive SUV all the time.
I wish they made a hybrid with a ~2kwh battery, it would make up for the lower torque curve & increase mpg by 30%. The old plug-in didn't have great range & not much better efficiency when you couldn't plug in. It would be a win-win for consumers and environment.
Speed can be about dodging other traffic more than the vehicles involved in the collision. If I'm on the highway (interstate) with other cars going 70 mph, I would do anything to avoid coming to an unexpected complete stop right in front of them. My only point is that everything is situational so I avoid words like "always", especially when talking about safety. I agree that in most lower speed situations slow is better.

@Jonathan A I have a 2017 Equinox with over 100k and our neighbor has a 2016 Terrain with 70k. Neither vehicle has had any problems.

@Jonathan A I don’t think reliability is a determining factor here. Otherwise when reviewing range rovers, he would not compare it to anything.
Mitsubishi basing all their future models on Nissans would probably make a lot of sense, a lot less expensive to develop and at the same time getting the tech Nissan has developed.

Interesting that there isn’t any form of hybrid. In Europe at least the Outlander was one of the first PEV’s, yet this one doesn’t even have a mild hybrid. Due you know if some form of hybrid is coming or is coming but only to the world outside the US?
Why the government allows cars to be sold w/o a spare is crazy. Those fix-a-flat things don't always work. I have experienced it a couple of times.

Alex, No sooner have I credited, Mitsubishi/Nissan/Renault for the sliding second row seat then I must slam all three of them for nonexistent rear headroom. Why is it so 'gosh darn' difficult to accommodate adult passengers in the back seat of a family CUV or sedan these days?

Like the Outlanders longer look and roofline. I think Mitsu’s are more reliable than Nissans. I have yet to drive an Outlander. The Rav4 was fun to drive with its new Dynamic force engine. Style wise Outlander wins both inside and out.
i am very confused between 2022 mitsubishi outlander, hyundai tucson and jeep compass. i need best tech and safety features with sunroof kind of things atmost priority. Would like to know if there would be any significant difference in insurance prices of these depending on brand. Your personal picks and opinions are much appreciated! 🙏

Not a bad vehicle but you will get what you paid for. 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty is limited, means not everything is included. Went through a long process with Mitsubishi not too long ago. Maybe I was the lucky one to pick a lemon but hopefully you guys find good ones to begin new adventures.
My brother had 2 mitsu in the last 20 years, his lancer is now 13y and no issue, my step sister has so much issue with her toyota sienna in 5y. I think you got a lemon, i had 4y long battle with hyundai for motor, transmission and other stuff and they never admited their car is faulty. Every car maker has difficulty saying when they are wrong.

The "emergency use" 3rd row was a major factor in my family's decision to purchase a 2012 KIA Sorento and to replace it with another Sorento in 2018. We're a family of four (2 adults, a teenage daughter, and a big dog.) We don't use the third row often but on occasions when we transport six or seven passengers on a local trip it's a huge convenience compared to using two vehicles. And compared to other 3 row SUVs, the Sorento's third row isn't as cramped as one might think. For example, it provide 2 inches more legroom than the Toyota Highlander and considerably more overall space than the Outlander or the optional 3rd row in the Tiguan. By the same token, the Sorento's overall size makes it ideal for its primary mission of navigating the jungle of urban/suburban traffic, public marking spaces, and fitting easily in our crowded garage.
Unfortunately, KIA has decided to fit every Sorento trim other than the lowest, most basic version with captain chairs in the 2nd row. Even worse, the 2.5L turbo 4 that has received universally strong reviews in virtually every one of the NINE KIA, Hyundai, and Genesis vehicles can only be had in mid and upper trim Sorentos with the captain chairs. This means that having more than 4 passengers in the vehicle forces the use of the third row. And since our big dog isn't designed for a captain chairs it means we would have to deploy the third row or keep him confined to the cargo area. And since deploying the 3rd row eliminates all but 12 cubic ft of cargo space it severely limits our options for trips that involve gear and luggage.
All in all, our current 2018 top trim (SX-L) Sorento is a "goldilocks" vehicle for us. It's my wife's daily driver and our family's long distance "tripper." It easily accommodates up to five adults or four adults and "Fido" with generous cargo space behind the 2nd row. Sadly, KIA has configured the trim levels of the current Sorento in a manner that makes it a far less appealing vehicle. While we'd love to retain the convenience of an "emergency use" third row, if we were in the market now, we'd likely opt for the Sorento's stablemate, the Santa Fe.

Mitsu dealer called to ask if I want to trade in my 2017 for a new one. I asked how many he had on the lot and he replied "2". Even Mitsu is having difficulty with enough new cars to sell in my market. Why sell, if I can not even find a new car to buy?
Wait for the PHEV. It'll qualify for the full Federal Tax Credit. Delete that 3rd row, bring back the spare tire, and redo the "wiggle shifter".
Only if the new so called "EV credit extension" won't get passed. Otherwise according to the new proposed scheme Outlander PHEV would only qualify for 4K.

Great review Alex! I did not know about the Mitsubishi/Nissan partnership. That CVT seems like a major ouch to me though, and it's interesting that Nissan is getting away from that transmission on many of their own models, but they're leaving it in this Mitsu. The Nissan CVT has proven unreliable, and even an optimal CVT usually has a decidedly rubbery feel to it. The Toyota seems the much more reliable choice over the long haul. But pretty much any of the vast amount of crossover choices with a real automatic seem to me to be a better option than this one.

Saying this car isn't slow because cars 35-40 years ago were much slower is really missing the point. The importance of competitive acceleration is to safely merge onto high speed roads. Underpowered vehicles relative to most other cars severely impacts confidence while merging and can be really dangerous.
If I were in the market specifically for a Nissan Rogue or I needed a new CUV but on the cheap, then the Outlander makes a compelling argument of itself.
But, your own comparison here leads me to believe that a base Kia Sorento LX ($30,665) with it's 2.5 litre I-4 (29/24 m.p.g., 191hp, 181 lb-ft torque) standard 3rd row children's bench seat and without a smartphone mirroring feature on its smaller display screen would STILL be the better buy. An 8-speed auto beats a CVT every single time for refinement and adults get more legroom; especially in the 2nd row.

0-60 in 8.4 seconds was actually about average for a sedan or SUV only 20 years ago. Anyone who thinks it isn't safe doesn't know how to drive. Today's average 0-60 for this class of vehicle is still only about 7 to 9 seconds.
Anyone who thinks that a third row seat is a seldom-used future clearly does not come from a big family. I was the Mills how the five kids growing up in a family of 7. That third row of seats had better been roomy, and it better have had a decent amount of cargo space behind it, otherwise it was a waste of time. I imagine not much has changed for households who have more than the average 2.5 kids. Obviously this would not be first-rate choice for people who have three teenagers and two preteens for kids.

Where I am in the Canadian PNW, Mitsubishi dealerships in my area keep closing up shop or get shuffled around depending on who buys out the franchise. That kind of instability makes me concerned for the long term with the brand.
What I find crazy is that a base Mitsubishi Outlander is only a couple grand more than a mid trim Corolla/Civic and yet offers tons more cargo and passenger space. Considering that Mitsubishi comes with a 10 year warranty, I'll buy the Outlander instead of the Corolla!

A surprise.
Accelerating out of danger works 100% merging onto a freeway with idiots. I can confirm that. I almost died in my moms Jeep Compass lol, while in my Chrysler 200 v6 I never fear merging with speeders riding the right lane in traffic.

I’d buy a Mitsubishi over a Nissan any day. They may not sell very well anymore but they’re better than a new Nissan
