It remains, to this day, MTV’s most-played music video OF ALL TIME!
The video was directed by Stephen R. Johnson, famous for helming the Talking Heads’ music video “Road to Nowhere”, and partially animated by Nick Park, who later went on to create the award-winning children’s series Wallace & Gromit.
On February 9, 1987, the video swept all major categories at the MTV Video Music Awards, taking home a total of nine statues-the most awards a single video has won.

Genesis never actually broke up...yet. They have been on hiatus at times, though. Now, it's gonna be interesting. Phil can't play drums anymore, due to health reasons, so he has to have one of his sons play for him. Peter has yet to agree in playing again for old time's sake (scheduling, motivation, etc.). Steve Hackett has always been open to performing again with Genesis, but only if Peter joins in. *Sigh*...someday it will happen.

@@rsk47reviews59 Yes, there are shows booked...provided that COVID-19 doesn't throw a wrench in the works. However, the shows will likely be no different than it was in 2007; probably going to focus on the post-Peter Gabriel era or 1980 and later, I would think. It'd be nice if they just rehash the October 2, 1982 "Six of the Best" show and have both Peter and Steve play. Have it feature both Nicholas and Simon Collins on drums, pulling off some awesome drum duets.

He reunited with Genesis for one night in 1982 (on Mike Rutherford's birthday) as a stipulation for the band bailing Peter out of financial trouble of the WOMAD Project (WOrld Music And Dance). He actually went 'crowd-surfing' during "Lay Your Hands on Me" at a big venue! I loved him in Genesis and I really loved his solo stuff. Every song on this album is incredible. Did you catch that incredible bass work by the talented Tony Levin (also plays with King Crimson)? My favorite from 'So' is "Red Rain". "Big Time" is another funky rocker, also off 'So'. Then the previous album, 'Security' has "Shock the Monkey". Other hits: "Solsbury Hill" and "Games Without Frontiers". Lot of superb deep cuts off his albums too. Be well, stay safe!

When I saw you were doing "Sledgehammer", my first thought was, "Well, THAT will keep him awake." Brass derives from the Stax Records house band, The Memphis Horns. Yeah, it's sex. But it manages to be both blatant and subtle at the same time. The video was managed by Steven r Johnson, who also did Gabriel's next song, "Big Time," which you may also like to react to.

He was the founding lead singer for Genesis. From the late 60’s until the late 70’s. Phil Collins was the drummer and backup singer. After Gabriel left the band, Phil Collins took over and did his magic. Peter Gabriel is so unique. Not long after this song he came out with the album “So”. It won several Grammys from the get-go. It’s brilliant. Nothing like his previous music. It’s so cerebral and hauntingly intoxicating. I’m sure you’ve heard “In Your Eyes”.

This song is from 1986, and Peter Gabriel was a long-time rock & roll veteran by then. Gabriel was the original lead singer for Genesis, beginning in the late 1960s. He left the band in the mid-'70s to start a solo career. (The drummer for Genesis, Phil Collins, took over as lead singer for the group.) Gabriel had some great songs over the years. You should definitely check out "In Your Eyes", which is one of his best known songs, and "Solsbury Hill", which was his first hit after becoming a solo artist.

When Peter left the group Genesis Phil took over the lead singing while still drumming. Here's some of my favourite songs of Peter Gabriel solo.
    - Solsbury Hill

I'm 38. I remember being a kid stuck to the tv when this video came on. The 80s had some captivating videos. My 20 and 15 year old are always fascinated when I show them this stuff. keep it going! If didn't try Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams", put it on your list.

Peak period MTV, my guy. This is what that channel was all about, and Peter Gabriel was the kind of artist who knew EXACTLY what was (and still is) possible with great music and hands-on artistry.

So creative. It won a record 9 MTV awards. I think I read somewhere that it was their most requested video. Do "Shock the Monkey" next.

Peter Gabriel, as others have said, was the original lead singer of Genesis. A few years in, they hired a virtually unknown Phil Collins to be their drummer. Gabriel was always a bit shy on stage and would feel self-conscious during the band's long instrumental passages. He said there's only so much the audience wants to see of the lead singer standing up there and 'wiggling his bum' while the band played. One of the things he did to combat this was dressing up in some outrageous costumes. Originally, he didn't even tell the others in the band because he said they'd never let him do it. So one day, he just appeared onstage in a red dress wearing a fox mask over his head -- something which was on the album cover at the time. It was shocking, but it put the band on the map.
    .
Ever since then, Gabriel's been making the visuals part of his musical performance. When doing videos, he didn't see them as an afterthought, but as a multimedia art form in itself. 'Sledgehammer' has got to be one of the best videos ever made. It was difficult for Gabriel to do. He had to lie there for hours at a time while they moved everything and photographed it frame by frame. (The smell of the fish, he said, was particularly hard to endure.)
    .
I feel that now you've enjoyed two solo works from the band Genesis, you might want to try their bassist's band, Mike + the Mechanics. 'Silent Running' or 'The Living Years' are two very good songs to start off with. Or, if you want to hear an outstanding song by Genesis itself -- with both Gabriel and Collins in the band -- try 'Firth of Fifth' (studio version).
    .
    Fun reaction! Thanks!

I'm glad you didn't get too distracted by all the claymation visuals going on in the video. Peter Gabriel was an excellent artist in the '70s and '80s, especially his work with Genesis in their formative years, very progressive rock. This song was a big hit and the album was his most commercial. He used a lot of world music, different instrumentation which you may have noticed.

Song was released in '86. Nothing like this video existed when it was made, either. (The stop-motion was done by the same studio behind Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.)
"Solsbury Hill," "Red Rain," "Big Time" and "Come Talk To Me" are some other A+ Peter Gabriel tunes.

Not one of my favourite songs but I admired the genius that was behind the video and found it so different to anything I had ever seen. The song itself always confused me but I couldn't make out all the words so lost a lot of the lyrics sadly. I listened to it as it was on the radio a great deal, not having MTV until much later I saw the video on Top of the Pops here in the UK but the images changing so fast caused someone in the family to have problems with their epilepsy so we left the room and listened to it out in the hall. Perhaps thats why I wasn't over fond of it after watching someone collapse. I appreciate the video, and I like Peter's voice and his talents. God bless you all, good luck everyone. Peace love and hugs Mary-Ellen UK

This song came out in 1986. I remember the premiere of this video on TV, it was a big deal! I realize now, the hilarity in premiering this song on prime time television, and my single-digit-old self grooving out to it in the living room, when the whole song is just every sexual innuendo Peter Gabriel could think of, strung together.

The people who did the animation for the music video e.g the Train was a company called Aardman. Aardman animation created Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Flushed Away, Arthur Christmas and more. They focus mostly on clay animation.

He does a great duet with Kate Bush called 'dont give up'. This song was 80s, MTV made it so people could make amazing videos to bring more attention to their songs, if you see a truly amazing clip its from that time period mostly :-) Some of them were like mini movies
