Sledgehammer meaning is just what you said This song is about sex, and the lyrics are loaded with phallic symbols. In addition to the word "sledgehammer," other references to the male member include the train, bumper cars, and the big dipper. The innuendo was typical of the blues music Gabriel drew from.
'In your eyes' from the secret world live tour is a real feel good song to watch. In fact the whole concert is so good I watch it about once a month and never tire of it!
It's Peter Gabriel, you get to understand the more you listen to him. He used to be in a band called Genesis with Phil Collins until he (Peter) left the band. He's actually very very cool! His music is awesome, he's done some good stuff with Kate Bush too. Absolute English treasure 🇬🇧
Yes, Sledgehammer is a song about male sexuality and also a tribute to MoTown. This was easily one of the best rock songs of the 1980s. Other Peter Gabriel gems are Biko, In Your Eyes, Solsbury Hill, Games Without Frontiers, Mercy Street, Red Rain, Shaking the Tree, When Your Falling, and Secret World. His music is a real deep vibe as you listen more. He is in the Rock and Roll HOF.
And obviously “Land of Confusion” by his old band, Genesis. My kid got obsessed with that video at age 5 (she’s 15 now). Imagine trying to explain global politics in the 1980’s to a 5yr-old. 😂 She still loves it-and understands it-today.
Back when MTV was still new, there were a handful of music videos that literally defined the genre. Thriller by MJ. Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. Take On Me by Aha. And this song. Really that's the "mount rushmore" of music videos I think.
Another killer choice - this video took us all by surprise when it came out, and was a real landmark for the 80s. Peter was the original lead singer for Genesis, and in their earlier years they were an experimental progressive rock band - that uniqueness definitely carried over to his solo work. This album was huge, lots of great tracks, but this was definitely the biggest. Always fun hanging out with you guys, peace and love from Canada!☮
Fun fact: this video was nominated for Best video of the Year at the 1987 Soul Train Awards and Peter was the first and only white nominee in that category til Eminem in 2001 XD... it didn't win (Janet Jackson's video for "What have you done for me lately" did) but it won TONS of other awards with it (MTV, Brit Awards, etc.)
Peter Gabriel also won an Oscar for his song for Disney's Wall-E ... his daughter Melanie usually accompanies him on tour ....... the man is a genius .
He is saying he'll be whatever tool or vehicle needed to reach the destination. If it's beyond his imagination, he's open to being told and will have no problems communicating about it. Refreshing.
This was voted #1 video of the 80s by MTV and it was tied for the #1 song of the 80s (when the poll was taken in 1989) with Sweet dreams are made of this from the Eurythemics.
You're spot on Recklezz! When the video first came out on MTV, it took me watching it quite a few times before the lyrics clicked.......and you did it the first listen!
What is the meaning of the song Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel? In addition to the word "sledgehammer," other references to the male member include the train, bumper cars, and the big dipper. The innuendo was typical of the blues music Gabriel drew from. Gabriel said regarding the theme of this song: "Sometimes sex can break through barriers when other forms of communication are not working too well.
I have to highly recommend the live version of In Your Eyes. It's a spiritual experience. Also, did you know that Phil Collins replaced Peter as vocalist for Genesis? Yeah, that band is pretty iconic. I have to also recommend Genesis at Live Aid performing Abacab. Oh, and you're not tripping. 😅
Just so you know the meaning behind shock the money is as follows. Shock the Monkey" is “a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's basic instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings ...
Peter Gabriel is so awesome! He’s a strange dude but so creative. He was a great frontman for Genesis before going solo. Check out Solsbury Hill, In Your Eyes, Shock the Monkey, Big Time, his cover of David Bowie’s Heroes was amazing.
The backing vocals were by P. P. Arnold, Coral "Chyna Whyne" Gordon, and Dee Lewis, who also did the backing for "Big Time". I recommend you check out P. P. Arnold’s ’First Cut Is The Deepest’. Class track.
It was absolutely about sex. If you like the feel of this song, please react to "Big Time" and "Steam" for a similar feel. Peter Gabriel has a long list of very good songs. "In your Eyes" from the Secret World Live tour as someone has mentioned, is a must watch.
I highly recommend getting into some Genesis. I'd suggest checking out the song Mama, it's actually got Phil Collins on vocals as it's from after Gabriel left the band.
Great reaction! Peter Gabriel is one of the most remarkable people of our time. His contributions to culture and humanity go far beyond his music. You should read about his work with Nelson Mandela and other peace leaders and his long history of dedication to humanist causes such as Amnesty International. His catalog of music (solo and with Genesis from 1969-1975) and his influence on other artists is impressive. Peter is a clever lyricist and leading influencer during the 1980's by working with and promoting artists from around the world. Yet he has always had a sly sexual wit in his lyrics. If you like that aspect, listen to "Counting Out Time" from the epic concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from his last album with Genesis. ruclips.net/video/edBB5iGYYpk/видео.html Genesis and Peter Gabriel are deep rabbit holes if you like progressive rock.
The AMAZING Tony Levin with that bouncy bassline. Levin's a highly sought-after session musician, but he does regularly record with and tour with Peter Gabriel
You know when they have all the people crowded together even though they got the backup singers and in all those people in that room there's 1gal sitting on a bar stool and it's Peter Gabriel's daughter if you look really closely you'll see she's so spitting image alright kids yeah Creed video prayed artist you haven't even done his stuff from the early 70s progressive rock era type stuff and there's even more of his solo stuff and it's absolutely astounding
YES!!! This whole cd "SO" was fantastic, with this being my favorite Peter Gabriel song! Other GREATS are "BIG TIME" and "Shock The Monkey". Oh yes, it's about sex, lol.
I loved this song growing up but I was a kid and the video disguised what its really about. So I started playing this song in my acoustic act a few years ago, it was the first time I really looked at the lyrics and was like, oh...this is about fucking lol
Yeah stuff from where his face is melted that solo album is just beyond I remember hearing that some record Executives said Oh wow was Peter Gabriel committed for a little while? He even has a changed labels because his previous label wouldn't release it it was pretty cool though because they did an accident some happy accident the use some kind of an expander limiter gate technology and a created this snare drum sound that is so awesome and then everybody in the 80s started using that undeniably another genius
I remember the night this premiered on MTV . Same expressions as you guys had . Love Peter Gabriel . “In Your eyes” should be your next choice from him. ⭐️
0:00- I'm seeing how calm these two are before watching this song and music video and I can tell ya'll have not buckled your seat belt for this ride. Hahaha, that's all good!!! You bout to trip all the way out with this one.
You need to take in his first solo single, "Solsbury Hill." The lyrics are deep, thoughtful, expressive and intensely personal -- written as he was leaving Genesis for his solo career.
I really enjoy this video when I was a kid; the colours, the imagination, the fun, the stop motion, I never noticed it was about sex relations until I grew up!! It is a very adult song and video but it had conquer all hearts at that time. Peter Gabriel is a genius, that I have the joy to have seen him twice in Chile. The first time in the first Amnesty International Concert in the 90's, with David Bowie, Brian Adams, among others. I was a Kid. The second time, not many years ago in Chile with my wife. Great!! I just want to recommend you the song "Big Time" which has a strange video like this one; but surely his best songs ever are Solsbury Hill and In your Eyes, from the Album "So". Regards from Chile!! :-)
Thank you for taking an interest in these songs from the 80’s. MTV was huge in those times. I remember when this video came out, it took me a while to catch on to the meaning🤔, but people were captivated by the visuals of this video. The 80’s were a really fun time to grow up and music videos was a big part of the culture. By the mid 90’s it was all over☹️
I've been watching your reaction vids all morning, binging, and this one busted me up laughing... your reaction right off the bat was PRICELESS! THANKS!
Another amazing videos: Frank Zappa - Inca roads Bjork - I miss you, Human behaviour, Bachelorette, Isobel. Primus - Mr. Krinkle, John the fisherman, Tommy the cat. Genesis - Land of confusion.
*Now y'all gotta react to "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. BUT, it has to be, "Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes (Secret World Live)", from his official page (Best quality) It's the finale from his 1993 concert (which explains a couple of the backup singers' clothes.😁).* *And yes, it's the song from "The Boombox Scene" from the movie, "Say Anything". That would be a cool clip to react to and add to this reaction since it's such a huge pop-culture reference.* 📻
And the best part is that when you paused it to talk about the underlying subject matter, you were right where the video shows a tiny little box with a strange trigger-looking thing on it, from which Peter's face pops out. Talk about symbolism
One of the first videos to use computer editing and graphics, in addition to classic stop motion animation. Get in a good headspace and watch his concert video "Secret World". You will be amazed!!
One my favorite video!! ORIGINAL!! He is different, but talented. Thanks for reacting!❤❤ PS thanks for not ending video too soon. Yes it's about sex, and more!
This is made with stop motion camera work which is shot one part at a time. So each piece of fruit was placed and then shot one at a time. So the amount of hours it took to make this is mind boggling.
I normally watch your channel/Reactions on my tv so i cant comment. So commenting to give you some things to react to. 1 in your room - depeche mode live devotional 2. Radiohead - Street spirit live glasto 2003 3. Rammstein - Deutschland official video

The video is so interesting, fascinating, etc. that you almost don't even hear the music or the lyrics. In fact, one could almost criticize the makers for making a video that distracted from the otherwise great song that it was created with. "Open up your fruit cage, and I will be your honey bee." Sexual metaphor at its finest!
The train part recalls the old 'dozens' slam--Yo mama like a railroad track: She been laid all over this country :)

You need to check out Peter gabriel sock the monkey the video is just about as crazy as this one
He has won more awards than you can shake a stick out. He’s done amazing things.
A lot of talent in Genesis beyond Phil
@@TubinTexas Peter was the talent before Phil !

This video was named the most played video of all time on MTV.
You guys should also check out Big Time by Peter Gabriel.
Music videos were an art. Can you imagine how long it took to create it?
The golden days of MTV.
Did they do “Take On Me” or “Virtual Insanity” yet? Great videos, too!
The Chemical Brother’s “Let Forever Be” is really awesome too.
And obviously “Land of Confusion” by his old band, Genesis. My kid got obsessed with that video at age 5 (she’s 15 now). Imagine trying to explain global politics in the 1980’s to a 5yr-old. 😂 She still loves it-and understands it-today.
As you can see, he's sort of a visual artist as well as a musical artist. Check out "Shock the Monkey". Strange in a different way. Great groove.💙☮💙
Great song! Never quite understood all the meaning, but it's a fun song!

My whole Senior year of high school was about this album!
Unmistakable voice. Nobody sounds like him. And - like David Bowie - he's as much an artistic talent as he is a music talent.
Check out Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from the Secret World Tour Live
The version from 1987 is so much more powerful
