If you live in eastern Europe, sadly apple maps is just unusable. It doesn’t have the new 3D design, no lane guidance and It lacks most of the new features. When It comes to worldwide availability, google maps is clearly the winner because It has all of the features.

I've recently gave Apple Maps a second chance after many, many years and I can tell you it has improved a lot for Romania. It's still not Google Maps level but its getting there. In any case, I wouldn't call it "unusable", the maps are reasonably up to date, it gives good routes and turn by turn directions, which honestly is all you need. I would never rely on a maps app for lane guidance, you always have to be aware of your surroundings and road signs.
Well, outside US and Canada Apple Maps will not work at all

Great to meet your son Stephen - I'll share this with our Pi folks. For trip and bike trip planning, I still use Gmaps. But I find that the voice guidance is much better for route guidance in Apple Maps - and the Apple Watch turn by turn directions is super useful.

Just depends on your location and what you search because i can search for a location and get the option to look around in street view on Apple Maps as well. And on traffic Apple Maps will alert if there are traffic cameras, speed stops and car accidents as well
For sure. Rural areas are typically what’s better covered by Google Maps. Though I was surprised some downtown tampa spots lacked a street view in Apple Maps
I use Apple Maps. I wish they did add tolls cost that’s a pretty cool feature. One thing I don’t like about Apple Maps since I have my job as a favorite every time I get in the car it starts giving me a notification to go to work lol sometimes it can be annoying, I also don’t like about Apple Maps that when ending a route then going into maps again that same address I previously went too will come up again so I would have to close it out, would be cool if you close Apple Maps it will clear the route or anything you tried to do

Nice work. I favor Google Maps on the laptop because of the greater depth of information and street views. On mobile I use both. Lately I’ve been using Apple more for mobile navigation because of the more natural spoken directions and haptic feedback via the Apple watch. Would have been fun to run into you at Concord.

Thanks for the video first of all. Personally, I use Apple Maps more often. For me, they are more convenient when I am driving. The most important thing is less noise. When driving on the German autobahn, it is very important😅 I don't want to miss the exit at high speed. I only use Google to find information about working hours and photos.

Thank you for the overview, in future reviews if you could cover rerouting, which in Apple Maps is very slow, and search nearby, which is another pain point for me in Apple Maps that would be helpful. I try to stay in the native Apple Apps, these 2 functions push me to Google constantly. Thanks for your great tech reviews.

I just found this channel and I love how well your content is constructed. You are very informative and I really enjoy the side by side comparison of Apple Maps and Google Maps. The ONLY thing I like better about AM is the "go past this light, then turn left at the next light" type feature. Other than that, Google is the king.

Great review. Even after Apple initially came out with Apple Maps, I continued to use Google Maps. But for the past several years, with the improvements in Apple Maps, I have converted and almost never use Google anymore. I love using the guides function and feel the interface and much prefer the user experience.

Same, I rarely open Google Maps. Had to update a bunch of info just for this video!
I switched to Android from Apple in 2021 to try it again and I’ve found that Google Maps in Android Auto is better than what it was in Apple CarPlay. You are able to touch the faster route bubble to select it in Google Maps on Android but can’t on Apple. Faster routes where I live and work in Atlanta, GA is key and until Apple fixes it, I’m holding off on going back to iOS.

I use Apple Maps daily and you missed a couple of things like how the widgets gets smart suggestions based on your location and usage and also how it displays the route zooming in and out at very important turns.
Ah those are nice features. I don’t typically have the Maps widget on a Home Screen so didn’t know. Thanks for that!

I'd like to see waze vs apple maps vs google maps
Apple Maps still has a bunch of things wrong.
- The company I work for moved their building a year ago, and Apple Maps still shows us in the old location. Google Maps was updated almost right away. I submitted a correction, but they rejected it. I've submitted another with a screenshot of Google Maps (including the building photo and address). Hopefully they accept it this time.
- It had the name of my street wrong until I submitted 2 corrections, because they rejected the first one. On my second one, I included photos of the intersection street signs and they finally accepted it. However, most of the buildings on the street still show their address with the old street name. It's very confusing and not useful.
And there are just several little things like this why I can't use Apple Maps, ever. When it comes to navigation, accuracy is the most important thing. It's either Waze or Google Maps for me.
I really like Apple Maps but the only problem I see that no one complains, is the live traffic on the streets, since it only works on roads, I don't understand why

Wake led us astray A couple times in Australia. Apple Maps walking directions took me through somebody’s backyard in Melbourne Australia. I do like that Google maps allows you to download a map to use off-line. This is especially useful when you don’t have Wi-Fi in the mountains of Mexico or Slovakia and other places I’m sure. Truth be told, I don’t know if I’m lost until I’m able to pull a map up anyway 😏

Sometimes Google have errors and send you across town. It's does happen often. But when it does it's a nightmare.
Using Apple Maps in South Africa can be dangerous. On a few occasions Apple Maps directed me to an incorrect location in Johannesburg. It directed me to into an area that is notorious for hijacking and other crimes. This was way off from where my destination actually was. I had to turn to Google Maps to get me out of that very dangerous situation.

@@beardfm the only reason Waze is good is because while on android auto or Apple CarPlay your speedometer shows for some reason it doesn’t on Google Maps & Apple Maps

Once Apple Maps got me lost 3 years ago and I had to use Google maps to find the place. I haven’t used Apple Maps since. Honestly I have all Apple stuff and wish I could use Apple Maps, some of the presentation is better, but I just do not trust the accuracy one bit, Googles turn by turn directions are just so much more reliable.
After testing I see how there’s still accuracy discrepancies, totally get it
this is the exact reason i watched this review... especially since i got a new car with apple play and its the default navigation app when asking for directions. i was in fear of being taken the long way or the wrong place.
Since Apple maps doesn’t have bicycle routes in The Netherlands it’s completely useless for me. Because my bike is my main mode of transportation.

I would like Apple to be the better choice, but even you had to admit the turn by turn, which is basically the driving directions are better on Google Maps, &, that seem to be the most important information. I like the clean look of Apple Maps, but the totality of info, photos, more exact parking & turn by turn, makes Google the better choice. Every time I think about de-Googleing my life, I'm struck by how well most of their native apps work....
I use Waze and Apple Maps simultaneously on Car Play. I have Apple Maps in the foreground, with Waze in the background. That way, I get superior Apple graphics and presentation, while also getting the Waze audio announcements of traffic hazards ahead.

I do the exact same thing. My brain needs to be consistent in which companies apps I use.
As an iOS user for both phone and tablet, I never use Apple map. Actually, I only use WAYZ for long trips because of all the warnings for hazards/cops, and Google Map for short trips and trips with multiple stops. Apple map does have a cool 3D display of buildings.

I live in small town Americana lol and I DoorDash too. (As well as other delivery services). I primarily use waze because of the simplicity of the app. If too many insignificant things like trees, shrubby (bring me a shrubby, if ya know the reference bravo lol) it gets too “busy” for me too. But I would really like a map with commands like “house on the right”
Or even “destination in front of you”.
I don’t use voice commands because it sometimes isn’t accurate.
So I would really enjoy a video on waze Vs apple and/or google too.

I find myself using Apple Maps more and more often. Their interface has dramatically improved and their ETA on routes is nearly identical to Google’s

I love Apple Maps it just looks better than the others. However, they still need to improve, for example, Apple never alerts me to speed cameras or average speed zones
I am using the phone for point navigation. Usually get a point to navigate there and if I choose Google maps, that goesd somewhere else. Even if I know where to go and choose a point on the map, when I hit routing, google maps puts the end point somewhere else, even if the point is on a road. Google maps nowdays are nearly useless on Apple devices. I tell this as I already compared with an andriod phone for a couple of times...
I don’t know why, but here in Canada all the time when I go to a wrong way, it is shorter than what google has suggested me.
I just use google maps, Apple Maps and Waze all interchangeably since I’m terrible at picking sides 😂

I use Apple/Google/Waze in no particular order. I think I like Waze the best, but they all seem great.
What I really hate about google maps on longer routes: You never know if they include traffic jams in their ETA estimations. Sometimes I have to drive a 3 hour route on a busy highway. If there's an accident and a massive 1hour+ traffic jam, it simply displays a little accident symbol on the route but the ETA is still about 3 hours while in fact it would be much much longer. On shorter routes, it seems to include smaller traffic jams though, so you never know really what your ETA is.
On a recent 5 hour drive from Atlanta to Charleston, Google Maps updated me that traffic was getting worse or better, and would adjust the time accordingly

Two things that were missed and I think are worth mentioning would be CarPlay integration and alerts. I personally love how Siri tells me in the car when there’s a red light camera or reported speed trap ahead.
Ah would love to test that. Need to get something with CarPlay…
@@beardfm You can dash mounted CarPlay displays without replacing your car or head unit. They’re usually $200 or less depending on the features.

For me (I’m in Belgium) Apple Maps had tell me to go behind one store where the parking bay was
Compared to Google maps that has tell me nothing and leaving me in the middle of the road

Anyway I really prefer the lane and direction guidance of Apple Maps that is very descriptive

It appears you were touching your phone while driving. In Australia that is an offence. I use Waze with Carplay as it has great info re temporary speed cameras that users have added. Thanks for the many great videos too. 🤩

Out here in Carson City, Nevada I find Google Maps to not be so accurate. It bounces around has me take many stupid routes to get me to customers. When I switched to Apple maps I had far less issues and have used it for deliveries so much more. Google Maps tends to be a glitchy at times. So many times it doesn't hit the address right or glitches and I pass the address or find out as I get close it pushes it farther away because it pinged the locations wrong and resets to find it. Also, the Google Maps seems to have a high failure rate of the map showing anything at all and has more issues bringing it up. I guess it really just comes down to your location? maybe fore you Google Maps is better over all or a close 2nd while Apple Maps may not bet as good.
Location, especially those outside the U.S. means vastly difference experiences. Interesting to hear about Nevada though 🤔
In Brazil, Google still has a wide advantage but I’m not finding it so bad as reported by other iPhone users, Apple Maps

Would love a comparison with Waze. In particular: how good are the directions on highways.. Waze is super because it’s voice directions match exactly the exit signs. Eg 20 West/Airport versus the Maps that Uber Driver uses where the directions will be the name of the street or highway. That is really useless if you don’t know the area, going highway speeds and need to decide if that’s the right exit NOW!

My father prefers Google Maps because of its ability to stay North-up and show satellite view during navigation, which is fair. 🤷♂️ However, I am definitely more of an Apple Maps user because of how much cleaner it looks compared to Google. The only real problem that I’ve had with Apple Maps is that they’re very slow to update the map based on reports. One thing I’m certainly looking forward to, as someone who enjoys traveling and lives in a Midwestern city of only a bit over 100,000, is when Apple’s Look Around and Detailed 3D Experience features are available everywhere, and not just in select major cities.
Would love for look around to roll out faster! I do see the Apple Maps cars every once in a while…

Apple Maps for me. I just prefer the navigation interface & precise turn by turn directions are more specific as you noted. As far as navigation features there are numerous apps better then both google or apple.

I use to only use google maps and my dad would only use Apple Maps. Now I prefer Apple Maps because it always shows a shorter ETA and I always end up getting there at or before that time.
I drive everyday in traffic and Apple Maps seems to be either more accurate or updated faster. Anyone else?
Edit: Also Waze has the same ETA as Apple Maps. For example right now good maps says 1 hour and 54min to get home and Apple/Waze says 1 hour and 41min.

I don't think Apple Maps has the option to download offline. Also, Apple Maps uses a lot of data.
İ'm in Europe and rarely use the navigation for driving a car. İ need more information for the use of public transportation instead, and G is better than A in this case.
İ'm saying this after giving A a chance for about a month. İ just had to give it up in the end. 😶

I have used Google maps for years. They have lost their intuitive interface and thy continually block my map with popups while driving. I have come to feel they are a hazard to driving unless you have a navigator with you. I have just got my first iPhone and am anxious to try out Apple Maps, I am hoping to find a better experience. I want driving directions not recommendations that I didn't ask for.
Very fair and I agree it’s still google maps. I’m the UK I also find directions in Apple Maps are a lot weaker than google maps… so the gap would be larger… keep going apple you are catching up..

Apple maps is almost unusable in Europe because android phones are more popular here.
I think the navigation instructions for Google is really bad. Slight left than left??? Sharp right??? And when you're going into a complex junction, the voice instructions just won't cut it. You'll have to visually inspect to decide which lane to take.
Same. Siri may struggle in a lot of areas but it knows how to give driving directions 😂
I am from Indonesia, i like apple maps design, but i had one problem. I cannot add my home and work address at least use a simple pin. Not big a problem but pretty annoying

Great video. Never really cared for Google maps. When they were kicked off the iPhone back in the day, I agreed with Apple. Apple Maps was…ok. Mainly I purchased expensive Garmins and other mounted devices. Then cars started including their own navigation systems. Years later when I finally started using Apple Maps through CarPlay, I was pleasantly surprised at how much better it was than my car system. Today, it’s a great system and I don’t worry about it pimping out every location to the highest bidder.

My step dad tested his Google maps on his S 21 ultra and tried to mess it up and it messed up. He tried to do that with Siri and our car with CarPlay with my mom and my phone and we had the only two phones that got us where we were going, and we could turn exactly where we wanted to without it messing up for four years straight. I just upgraded to the iPhone S14 lol and it works perfectly. Still android sucks lol it’s also less durable lol I saw some dude at a concert drop his phone literally from 10 feet up while he was dancing to a concert and his phone was perfectly fine and he had an iPhone 13 Pro Max and I also saw someone else with an S 21 ultra and he dropped his phone while dancing on the top floor the same distance and his phone cracked and was completely unusable. iPhones aren’t strong ass. Even someone with an old iPhone luck even though it was the new iPhone SE 2022. He dropped his phone from the same area as well while dancing to the concert and it did not break as well but there is also someone there with an iPhone 4/4S either way. He did the same thing while dancing and someone bumped into him. He dropped his phone and it was completely fine to me the iPhone 4s I’ve dropped from 40 feet high and it was completely fine my old old iPhone 4s. Apparently the iPhone 4s is stronger than my Samsung phones. Even the S 21 ultra doesn’t surprise me. And I have dropped that thing over the years more than 50 to 60 times and it’s still flawless as if it hasn’t ever been dropped. Try saying that for a Samsung phone even a newer one stronger my ass.

In Apple Maps you can tap the speaker icon to mute the voice directions!

In Sweden google maps is the way to go.
In apple maps many destinations are shown in their previous locations, roads not having been updated to theor current lay out etc.
And NEVER use public transport through apple maps. I've troed and it has wanted me to go to other cities to switch to trains that would pass through my own coty either way.
Aka you have 3 locations: A B C
you live in B
The train comes from A and stops at B and C
Apple maps wants me to go with a train from B to A to then go through B to C.
Google maps wants me to catch the train comming from A at location B to go to C.
Seems like Google Maps is the clear winner outside the U.S. for sure

As a traveler, Google Maps just has more features, information and implementation across the world. So for me it's clear. Of course, locally (in Latva) Waze is the best but these days Waze and GMaps exchange a lot of same data.
Google acquired Waze so the data is going to be almost identical, but completely understand outside the US Google Maps is the winner.

Apple Maps for me. Convenient and I try an avoid Google where possible. I travel distances always with Waze. The warnings (I guess provided by primarily truckers) are priceless. Would love your review.
I used google maps for walking and it said it would take 30 minutes, I then went to apple, it found a secret path and saved me walking 27 minutes.

I like Apple Maps more because I feel like the interface looks better. I like the way the maps show you which line to use and I like the voice instructions on Apple Maps much more as well. Also, Apple Maps informs you about speed cameras and Google doesn’t do it. Now as much as I love it, I wish it was more developed in other countries besides the US. In Poland where I live it’s getting much better than it used to but still sometimes not as reliable as Google maps. Additional points for Apple maps for being much better to the phone battery as well.
I’d rather use Apple Maps but have navigated to several closed businesses that AM shows as open, then checking Google maps shows these same spots as permanently closed. It seems Google has more updated business info, Apple needs to step it up.

I love how most apple user is like "oh i love apple look, it display little to no functions .thats a point for me".
Its stupid how big the screen and how few the item on the screen. You can do it on google on one clict and theres apple with a few extra step jsut to do the basic thing.
I’ve tried google maps probably once to try it out and never went back. Apple Maps for me is very simple to use and is more visually comprehendible especially when you have to focus on the road and be safe. Apple is the way to go. If I used the google maps I’d probably get into an accident because I’d be too busy looking at the phone trying to figure out how the navigation system works and what is even going on.
Typical Apple user - I'm not used to Android / Google so Apple is better.

Google maps doesn't work on my iPhone

@@beardfm I got it to work I downloaded the app.
I like Apple Maps, but there is a large downside. You cannot download maps. I used a lot of my data during a holiday by car.
That *is* unfortunate, I wish you could force-download local areas.

The downside for Apple Maps tho is when I have a location in my favorites section it randomly disappears after a few days
Yeah it would be nice if you could pin several locations in that drawer

I just bought my 1st iPhone, but I will stick with Google Maps.
Gotta say that Adding a Stop in Apple Maps while using Apple CarPlay is trash. It’s so damn difficult because they restrict so many functions. The search function while using the keyboard is also very buggy and hardly shows a single result. Wish they’d update it asap and stop restricting so much.
The CarPlay / Maps integration isn't the best, I'll agree. I've only had experience with that *after* making this video.
Waze is my choice
Need to give it a fair shot for sure.
All I do is drive for work. And Apple Maps 90% of the time provides me with better directions than google maps in San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. I actually remember in Tijuana once google maps was spazzing out and not working and Apple Maps worked flawlessly there too
Interesting! I just came back from. road trip and really enjoyed Apple Maps, found it more accurate with traffic too
google maps all rounder king of useful maps.
in indonesia google maps are more no.1 reliable user to know traffic situation, street view update frequently at least 1 years even for streets like small alleys, know the place already closed and know the road are closed or not, most important google maps UI and UX are good for Grab or Gojek (super apps delivery/online motobike transportation) very informative with alot community local guide and direction, google maps gives exactly using public transportation optional with estimated time also always updated atleast every one month from data (Department of Transportation Indonesia) for example Bus /micro trans/ LRT / MRT /KRL Train schedule. and the last one is strong than apple maps/waze/etc google maps gives direction using motobike and cycling.
indonesia is huge population motobike so google maps has AI to detect like avoid toll road , roads car-only
I'm often hearing that outside the U.S. Google Maps is the clear winner.
