Past Tesla cars have needed to collect unique data based on the new cars' sizes. For example, the Cybertruck.
I expect the focus will be on the business case and existing cars joining the robotaxi fleet. New models and robotaxi cars will not be a primary focus.

Jeff nailed it!! “It’s going to be what Tesla wants!!”
I want a CyberVan!! A cross between a CyberTruck and my Toyota Sienna minivan.
The sliding door behind the driver’s door slides open to reveal my storage area -
    - place to hang sport coat or winter coat right behind my seat.
    - space on the floor for two pair of shoes, boots, etc.
    - low storage for backpack, briefcase, groceries.
    - upper storage for binders for chorus music folder, handbell choir music.
    - secure spot for checkbook, etc.
    Back door opens to haul
    - big-screen TV home
    - lawn mower
    - snow blower
    - pallets
    - boxes of stuff
    - easy to clean (not carpeted)
Passenger seat and seat behind it are very comfortable even though rarely used.
    Many other details to come!
    😎👍

This can only be done with vehicles. Why wait 12-18 months while the robotaxi starts rolling off the line? You already have vehicles.

I think Herbert is correct. Robo Taxi will not be the 2 person mini car. Look at the London Cab as an example of a purpose built taxi cab. It is about mid sized. It has seats facing forward and backward. It is boxy in shape. My guess is it will be either a model Y purpose built as a Robo Taxi OR it will be a variant of a model Y chassis with a different body style on it.

The business case IS the technology otherwise Tesla can launch an event today.
No, we must see the current stats on disengagements for the US for highways and surface streets for FSD in different road conditions and weather and seasons.
Then Tesla can show these numbers for v10, v11 and v12.
Tesla need to then show the road map explicity on how it will remove the technical challenges to get to L3, L4 and L5.
FSD Supervised can cover L3 and L4 and I think people will pay more for these different levels of capability.
So let us say L2 ( which is now) most people can afford $20 per month. L3 $40 and L4 $100 per month.
L5 must be the aim of Tesla for their Robotaxi and as such it will neex to drive in most weather conditions and even in bad weather if Tesla can develop a high def rada that does not consume too much power and must be wirelessly charged.
Also I think new camera positions will be needed, an additional 2 near the driver and front passenger wings and also 2 om the rear. One on driver side and one on the passenger side. These are to improve the ability to creep into traffic and or revers.
Also I think the Robotaxi will need to be able to understand human hand signals and also be able to read and understand road, streat, traffic and construction signs. Also how to negotiate railway crossings so it does not stop on the rails and thus to judge when it can cross to ensure it is not forced to stop on the tracks - due to another car being in front .

What about quick change seats that can all be pre cleaned and with seat out, one could easily clean the floor of the car with special floor matts formed to keep contaminates contained so a hose can spray clean and disinfected and dried plus a UVC lamp to sterilize the interior like they do with passenger airlines.

I'm totally with Alexandra... fleet owners will be first to robotaxi deployment. Think about it -- Tesla can INSTANTLY deploy hundreds of thousands of vehicles across the country at ZERO COST. Even Uber and Lyft take time to ramp up their driver fleet, and those are private vehicles at questionable standards (vehicle and driver skill level). Waymo and Cruise take years and billions of up-front investment.

I can't imagine sending my personal car out to do Robo-Taxi service. Look how people treat Uber and Taxi cars. They bang luggage into them, the drag bags into the trunk, they shut doors with their rear end, They may have a pen in the back pocket, they may spill a drink or food, etc. Some are just trying to juggle their luggage or packages as they get in or out of the car, but in general they are not as careful as I would be with my own vehicle. I think a purpose built car makes more sense. Built to handle the rigors of heavy use. The interior and seats would be designed for hard use and easy to clean. More like the way public transport( buses and trains) is made. Moulded seats with replaceable cushions. Moulded interior with no corners or areas for small items and dirt to collect. The interior designed for easy and fast cleaning, possibly with the ability to that be hosed out (think of drunk passengers). There will be no driver in the car to monitor how the passengers behave and treat the vehicle. The car needs to be durable, easy to clean and be easy to replace interior parts to keep the vehicle looking and performing well.

The $25k ish price level and likely size is exceedingly important to likely the vast majority of worldwide car/EV buyers. Yes, FSD is important for the world and Tesla stock but regular people and their means will continue to impact the fortunes of Tesla. I do agree that robotaxi will ultimately undercut taxi and uber cost to customer once the model is proven safe, clean and consistent. Thanks Herbert!

I just watched a RUclips video compilation of terrible drivers. One incident involved cars using the oncoming traffic lane in order to get into a left turn lane several hundred yards down the road. They actually confronted traffic coming toward them and expected them to get out of their way!! I know this is an edge case, but this person (woman) just sat there, threw up her hands and expected the legal traffic to get out of her way.

I have a question for robotaxi.
Since there seems to be some push back by people who want to sabotage self-driving cars, what kind of security does a robotaxi have for example do the doors lock when nobody is in them, or what is to prevent someone from tearing up the inside just to try to shut down the operation.
After seeing some of the activities in San Francisco with the cars there, I think this should be at least discussed.

When and where Tesla robotaxi networks are initiated should not be mentally restricted to Waymo and Cruise model... because high definition mapping is not required and fleet size is not limiting. Tesla could as easily do Florida, Arizona, and Texas as one isolated city (Miami, Phoenix, and Austin) in each.

  • @rzee4331
    @rzee4331 Месяц назад +1

If current Teslas are allowed to be driverless robotaxis then it seems very unlikely that passengers are allowed the front seats by regulation (just like Waymo and Cruise block access to front seats). Maybe Cybertruck since it is steer-by-wire and steering wheel input can be turned off.

Exciting. It's also worth talking about the control tesla will have over the robotaxi fleet. It could only accept trips that it knows it's gone through without any interventions. I think there will be an assistance button in the taxi where you can get support from a human or AI agent. I don't think they will need a human to take over but could have that feature. They will soon have an insane amount of data from all the robotaxi fleet fed back into the models. the improvement will be rapid.

You're thinking about the customer car robotaxi wrong. While people think of their own personal vehicle as being "their baby" and wouldn't want it servicing as a taxi, people who have had their car for 4 - 5 years and are looking at trading it in and disgusted with the trade-in value might opt to put it into the network and earn ($5000? $10,000? per year?) If that happens, it will push up the demand for used Teslas, and suddenly the trade-in value goes up to absorb that demand. It's like a pool of water sloshing around where the market will find its level. At some point the market will be saturated and it will be a winner-take-most with the cost of transportation dropping like the cost of flat screen TV's over the last 20 years.

Regardless how bullish are robotaxi and FSD services in future, we will still need to take near term financial profitability (1-2 years) into consideration. 19:34 Seems obvious to me, but just an opinion:
Initially, at least in most urban environments, robo-taxis (RT) may be regulated (aka, forced) to charge as much as traditional ubers and taxis in order to not too quickly undercut established businesses. This will slow the takeover of the traditional taxi market. RT will likely quickly become favored for longer trips (say Boston to NYC) where the rates can be adjusted down over at least portions of the drive, and RTs will also be able to provide service to small towns and even rural settings where the market isn't dense enough to support blue collar chauffeuring. Given the availability and affordability of the technology, where not already established as de rigore, it centrally connected telemetering and scheduling of taxis regardless of driver will become the norm, if not the required, and RTs have the advantage of being potentially more amenable to the monitoring and directing; just ask Korben Dallas...
