  • Today we will be interviewing the Bernt Bornich CEO of 1X, one of the leading AI robotic companies producing androids capable of human-like movements and behaviors.
    They are VERY different from all the other humanoid bot companies: 1) Going to attack home market not enterprise 2) Build Neo to be 66lbs so safe for the home
    Starting first with their wheeled robots called Eve, they’ve now unveiled their next-generation bipedal humanoid NEO which will start full-scale production next year
    With a partnership and funding from OpenAI, this US/Norwegian company had the world’s first commercially deployed humanoid robots patrolling large premises for top U.S. space and aerospace clients. They’ve also done pilots in logistics with tens of droids working in a customer warehouse facility.

    Wow, super insightful video! Bernt really put on a seminar on how to approach the consumer bot space. His focus on safety in the home was fascinating. It makes me think none of the other bot companies can compete in the home space since they have heavy, dangerous, gear driven bots that would accidentally injure people. It's amazing that they can make a human sized bot at such a low weight. My dream is to have a house bot and this looks like a company to watch. I didn't really take 1X very seriously before this since their bot looks kind of goofy with the puffy shoulders and cartoon face, but now I see what they are aiming at. 🙂

      This is just a startup without any experience in manufacturing anything. To create a production line, they will need sub-suppliers, experience in building such production lines, and also the ability to quickly change the production process and optimize it. Musk can be pretty annoying at times, but only a fool would claim he doesn't understand manufacturing. I wouldn't bet a single dollar on this startup.

    Good conversation. Thank you! I agree with Herbert that Berndt has really studied and thought out this problem over many years, starting from the basic motor mechanism to a global view of how the robot will interact with people and the world in a safe manner. I like the soft, padded skin idea and light weight for human and household interaction. I started playing with a Heathkit Hero 1 kit robot in the 1980s, with a mobile base and a single robot arm with sensors. The robot weighed about 40 lbs., so I could lift it and transport it in the front seat of my car to different locations, to test how it would operate in different environments. Good luck with the company!

    It feels Bernt is underselling his bot. The interview has been super exciting: they are targeting household customers, mass production in 2025, less than 25k pricetag, he already has a bot in his house with his kids. That's crazy! And it seems Herbert really had to pull all this info out of him whereas most CEOs would be bragging about it 😂😂

  • @RonLWilson
    @RonLWilson Месяц назад +2

    Also, in a home environment acoustic information is of high importance, like hearing a kettle of water reach boiling and such.
    Thus it might be worth giving a domestics bot an acoustic cameras capability so that it can better locate and ID sounds, like who is speaking to it or what was that noise and what do I need to do about it.
    e.g. Google
    Acoustic Camera - Explanations
    and
    Smart Vision - Acoustic camera for Newcomers with up to 100 acoustic pictures per second
    For hearing a sound can help one identify what is happening in teh world just as can seeing, and even more so if the two can be correlated.

    I could listen to these robot videos all day. It’s so cool that they want to sell the robot to the public first. I think an interesting question to ask him is how his company plans to tackle the misuse of robots by the general public (either to cause harm or for weird activities). Or how they would be serviced if there is an issue. Selling to the public first seems incredibly difficult.

  • @AntonMilev
    @AntonMilev Месяц назад +15

    It's one thing to create a prototype, it's quite another to create a production line and the capacity to produce hundreds of thousands of a particular item. For example, SpaceX produces one Raptor engine per day, and the Russians produce 20 RD-180s per year. The same will happen with robots - Tesla will be the only company that will be able to produce tens of thousands of robots every year and at a competitive price. Bernt Bornich should be aware of this.

    • @AntonMilev
      @AntonMilev Месяц назад

      @@juliahello6673 This does not mean anything, because it is a completely new product and the most important thing is that a company not only has production capacity, but has experience in completely new innovative solutions in terms of building a production line and its optimization in the future. Also, this project where the prototype and the production line are created by the same company will be successful because the prototype will be created to be produced easily and at a low cost. Boston Dynamics is owned by Hyundai, but this does not mean that the Koreans will easily produce what the engineers of their subsidiary company create. People have the delusion that mass production is just a printer, but this is a big misconception.
      If I had to make a prediction for this startup, it would be negative. Most likely they will not survive

    I haven't watched yet, but Tesla is trying to get to the factory which, if successful, will save them a minimum of $50,000 a year per FT worker replaced.
    How many people are willing to pay $50,000 a year for the robot in their home?
    FYI: Typically, the actual costs of your employees are somewhere between 1.25 to 1.4 times the base salary and Tesla is on the higher end. So an employee making $45,000 would cost Tesla $63,000 in total.
    Yes, eventually I'm sure they'd like to get to the home but that's not where the money is for a while.
    Fast food and warehouse employers would be another source who would be willing to pay more than all but a few homeowners. As the minimum wage goes up for very simple jobs the incentive to automate the jobs increase.

    • @garyrooksby
      @garyrooksby Месяц назад

      Two points:
      First: A small point. Elon has said many times that Optimus will not replace humans for a long time. They will supplement humans, doing the DDD jobs (dangerous, dull and dirty) while their human "shepherds" manage them. They will increase productivity of the whole team and won't replace any humans for years.
      Second: As Bernt said, in the home the bot needs to be very safe around humans. That must be a restriction on the learning capabilities. Tesla's Optimus will lean fast in a safer (less human interactive) factory environment. Tesla's number one consideration for everything they do is safety. They'll make it safe and teach it and optimise it and then release it into homes.

    Along the lines that real actions work much better to train AI than simulated, that is yet another reason to train bots to ride e -bikes in that even though that is not the same as driving an car there are many similarities in that navigating a road requirement many of the same factors be it a four wheel or two wheeled vehicle doing the navigation, but one can try thing son a bike that one might be reticent to do in a car, like ride down a run of stairs or the like.
    For a 66lb robot on an 60lb e bikes poses much less of a safety issue that has a top speed of 20mph than a car, but can perform many of the same tasks as a car like changing lanes, making turns, dealing with traffic and pedestrians, road work, and the like and thus deal with much the same agent behavior.

    Another use for humanoid bots could be mine clearing.
    They could wear mine clearing boots to help minimize damage if they step on a mine.
    e.g. Google
    Ukrainian Engineers 3D-Print Boots To Help Protect Sappers
    They could carry mine detectors as well.
    e.g. Google
    Best Metal Detectors for Every Budget in 2024
    This should be a rather simple task to train a bot to do and could save lives as well as limbs.
    There are track based mine clearing system but a humanoid bot seems like a much better approach in that legs offer more flexibility than tracks and can mimic what a human sapper does as well.
    And even if the bot walks slowly that should not be any problem when clearing a minefield in that one needs to move carefully in them.
    The bot could also be train to disable or remove the mines well or that could be done via teleoperation.

    • @RonLWilson
      @RonLWilson 29 дней назад +2

      Also the bot could carry several paint ball guns say red and yellow where the bot could mark a mine with red paint and a cleared way point along a cleared path with yellow paint.

    • @RonLWilson
      @RonLWilson 29 дней назад +1

      And in regard to employing bots for military use, just as humans can go back to their civilian jobs after the war so could the bots, unlike specially design equipment for military purposes.
      And also, unlike humans that say might lose a leg or such, a bot can lose a leg and just get a new one and be as good as new.
      So bots are a great investment no matte the purpose in that they can be readily repurposed as the situation might require.

    Robots made of hard plastic with gears are outdated: All future robots will eventually copy Neo’s gearless soft design.
    Prediction: 12 months after Neo is released we will see copies of humanoids coming out of China all using a similar soft gearless design.
    Don’t think they have fully thought through the design though. Fabric is impractical if the robot is cooking and gets raw food all over its hands and upper arms. It will need to be waterproof so it can wash itself between handling raw and cooked foodstuffs.
    Also it will need to be capable of cleaning itself of dust and dirt after a day out accompanying the owner. Easiest way to do this will be by taking a shower. Fascinating interview and has great potential to be the first home humanoid but still needs a lot of work.
    I can see Tesla completely overhauling the design of Optimus and starting again from scratch if their engineers watch this.
