    The thing I like the most about Yunaka is just early game knife access since the iron dagger forge bonuses are so huge and cheap. I always forge an iron dagger +3 and Sigurd engrave it and that's just a 12 might dagger for like 60 iron and 5 steel. It's not felt as much later as enemies scale up pretty hard after chapter 11 or so, but it's really stupid before that.

    The tricky thing about using Yunaka long term is to make sure she isn't just a worse Zelkov.
    Yunaka has better speed, magic, and resistance. She actually has the same strength growth, but Zelkov will have a higher base strength. Additionally, Zelkov has substantially higher defense, and build.
    Zelkov's build advantage means that Yunaka's speed advantage pretty much only exists on daggers, so trying to compensate for her low strength by giving her axes keeps her worse than Zelkov.
    Her magic stat though, while not great, is good enough to put a Levin Sword to work.
    She won't be a prime offensive unit by any means, but as a sword wolf knight, her high resistance with a good dagger will give her a good matchup against magic users, while her Levin Sword will allow her to deal enough damage to high defense units to put them in kill range of your other units.
    Zelkov really doesn't have a good way to deal with high defense units. So I think this is her best long term niche.

    • @judgmntready1028

      I never found this to be a problem and always used Yunaka as an aggro drawing avoid tank. Her damage doesn't necessarily matter, just the amount of enemies she can draw in and not get hit by. The only way to bypass this strategy was when there were enemy Mysticals that would go through the Avoid, but that's why I think Yunaka is better. Zelkov has almost no Res growths whereas Yunaka has excellent Res growth. She's not getting hit by physical attacks because of her Avoid, and she can tank magic because of her Res. Singlehandedly that makes her better than Zelkov in my opinion simply because I see her as more of a tank and not a DPS.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper Год назад

      @@judgmntready1028 A valid point I hadn't really considered.
      I don't use this strategy myself, as Corrin's Vein of Fire on Alear is more than capable of blocking off opponents in a similar manner, and at range, while still being able to set up fog to support covert units if the situation is called for. Or ice, or healing. Also, invincible dodge tanking just isn't my style.
      But in this particular context, you're right. That would give Yunaka a slight edge over Zelkov.

    After completing one run with Zelkov as a thief and nearing the end of my 2nd run this time with Yunaka as a thief, I have come to the conclusion that Yunaka was a better option, but not for the reason you might think.
    Zelkov wears a black cloak that makes him look like a unit that has already moved. There were so many turns on my first run where I could have made better plays if I had realized earlier that I could have still moved Zelkov. I even bought him a new outfit but it didn't matter because he doesn't wear it in battle.

    Crit characters can be thought of the same way as timerra or alcryst dex triggers. If you can double then a 30-40% crit chance means more than average you crit, and you only need to crit once.
    Yunaka is unique amongst the rng characters because she can counter at 1 and 2 range. She is effective on both player and enemy phase.
    With vantage, she can vantage sweep multiple enemies on enemy phase. If the crit misses, the enemy's attack might also miss, especially with terrain. You are helped by multiple layers of rng rolls.

    I think of Yunaka kind of like Sothe in Radiant Dawn. Having great speed to follow-up and good 1-2 range combat along with 5 movement already makes her look like a goddess compared to most of your starting scrub crew, and is one of your only reliable options for dealing with mages early on thanks to her solid resistance. Forged daggers also scale incredibly well (adding 2 Mt per level) and lets her one-round enemies she has no business to be able to do. Once everyone else starts promoting and enemies get tougher she starts to suffer and fall behind, but I think a character that starts off excellent and gets benched way later on is still far more useful than some of the mediocre units that take a lot of effort to even become tolerable.

    I've yet to have a run where she didn't hard carry multiple chapters just by standing on an avoid tile.
    I half agree about using canter on her, in my experience using it on her if she can attack from right next to an avoid tile she can't reach (like trees with a move cost of 2), you can attack then canter into the avoid tile. It's a niche use case but I found myself using it a lot when I tried canter on her.

    The trick with yunaka is to give corrin and avoid based skills. However you need to balance her avoid to be below enemy hit so she can enemy turn. Just remember that covert double avoid bonuses from terrain so set her avoid with weapon and skills to 60 less than enemy hit.

      Also, it’s important to Dance for her after setting up the Fog so that she can attack. You never know if an enemy will Aggro towards another character that isn’t Yunaka.
      Due to the the Dragon Classes having access to All Dragon Veins, I prefer using Corrin on Alear and Veyle (and have Yunaka next to them so that she can attack.)

      @@TheJaredPunch On the flip side of this, I've found that Maddening AI has somewhat of an obsession with chain attacks and can't "see" Corrin's Pair Up skill negating them. This means that enemy Backup units will trick other foes to attack your dodge tank even at 0% hit chance.

    On the topic of reforged weapons, I think there's a case to be made for using steel daggers instead of silver on Yunaka. Steel daggers only lose 3 Mt compared to silver, and get +10 Crit synergizing with her personal skill. Plus it's cheaper to upgrade to +4 (imo +5 isn't really worth it for daggers unless you have nothing better to upgrade).

  • @InternetMonster1
    @InternetMonster1 Год назад +7

    Since Yunaka is speedy anyway, I prefer her res to Zelkov's def since Mystical units will nullify most of her evasion. This is one of the problems I have had with Zelkov, he can dodge anything physical but mages mess him up. It makes positioning a little more difficult.
    Yunaka's lower strength and her build are really the only points of contention to me in terms of stats. You will always be 2 strength behind Zelkov at even level and the high weight of weapons will nullify her speed advantage for a long time.
    Since Yunaka is all about crits, theoretically you can just run her on Steel Knives for the higher crit and save your silver ore.
    One thing to note is that Zelkov has lucrative supports with Jean and Anna, who are both really valuable units. Jean notoriously lacks a lot of supports so Zelkov can fill the dodge tanks niche due to his passive and can help Jean hit things.
    In the end it is mostly her passive and speed vs Zelkov's strength and supports.

    Yunaka’s potential as a Martial Master is surprisingly high. Someone did the calcs and at iLevel 21(since she needs to be 21 to even reclass), in terms of PERSONAL Str+Mag(didn’t add class bases), she(19.1) only falls behind Kagetsu(19.95), Panette(20.65), Merrin(21.3), and Jean(22.3). Out of those, Panette and Kagetsu are better off as an actual physical class anyways. If you do ever decide to make her a MM then it might actually end up pretty well, though Merrin and Jean seem to be better MM candidates.

  • @nickofmillertime
    @nickofmillertime Год назад +1

    Yunaka is also one of the few units with Avoid Support bonus, which is probably my second favorite bonus. She gives 10 avoid to any unit with A support with her.
    Zelkov has 2 strength on Yunaka at same level for his base, but she's better in growths and can hunt mages thanks to her res growth. Additionally this is something not mentioned a lot but Yunaka comes at 500 SP level 6. This means she's only missing 100 sp for her level. Zelkov is level 15 but only has 1000 sp. This means he's missing 500 sp. And he's coming at the great SP scarcity after chapter 11, where the majority of your units are now getting half SP per exp point due to missing so many emblem rings.
    Lunar Brace somewhat fixes damage on the unit late game, allows her to punch through tanky units through scaling off enemy defense and put poison on them, which thieves characteristically have issues with.
    I don't think she works on fliers, means she never gets avoid bonuses from terrain, which means she never gets crit from the personal.
    If you want to keep tanking on her after she ascends to god levels of avoid, you can have her with a -avoid engraved dagger as a swap, but makes you pay attention to enemies hit rating.

    i paired her with Alcryst and both of them (one equipped with Corrin) will just take an entire lane by themselves. I tried pairing her with Zelkov but 2 thieves are kinda weird since you need to buy/refine 2 sets of daggers and Alcryst had more damage potential. Gave their main weapons +avoid and enemies can't do much, Corrin wielder also heals the other with Quality Time+. Just remember to bring different daggers to adjust your avoid on the fly, to either low to just enough to let the enemy attack you or make them switch targets so the other can recover when hit. 2 people are also enough most of the time to completely clog up any lane while giving u the flexibility to attack and advance.

    Easily one of the best Units in the game. Though in my opinion, yes she is good with Corrin, but make sure she receives dancing so that she can attack in the fog. Dragon Veins only last for one turn after all.
    Recommended Emblems: Marth for speed, Corrin for Fog Dragon’s Vein (obviously), Micaiah (since it’s the ring she starts with, and I find her to be pretty good in a Magic Class) and Leif for Knife Precision.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper Год назад +1

      I'd keep Corrin on Alear. Vein of Fire, Ice, Succor are all incredible. And if you still want Yunaka's dodge tanking, you can put Alear next to Yunaka, and then use Vein of Fog.
      This puts Yunaka at the edge of the fog, making it easier for enemies to reach her and giving her more opportunity to hit back. She also gets +3 damage from Divinely inspiring.
      While Alear won't be quite as evasive as Yunaka, they will still give each o ther support bonuses for adjacency, so Alear should be getting 30 from fog, as well as 5 or 10 from support (20 if S ranked.)
      If you'd prefer to keep Alear further from combat, you could place her diagonally to Yunaka, although you lose the divinely inspiring and support bonus, it will prevent ranged units from standing in front of Yunaka and wasting a turn attacking Alear.
      The big benefits to this method are that it allows the use of other dragon veins, and it allows Yunaka to get the fog benefit, in addition to equipping another Emblem.
      You can also dance Alear after this setup, and then have him set up a Vein of Fire elsewhere on the map, so Yunaka can dodge tank one front, and Vein of Fire will stop enemies dead in their tracks on another. You may be able to see how this would be useful in maps like Ike's paralogue where you're being attacked from 3 sides for example.

      Wouldn’t it be better to dance a higher dps character than a thief? Like my alcryst with killerbow can almost always proc crit + luna, or my anna can usually ohko most units with a engraved thoron, and panette just decimates enemies both in player phase and enemy phase, meanwhile my yunaka just tickles enemies funny bones with a +4 silver dagger on madenning.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper Год назад

      @@kiretan8599 Kind of funny using the term "dps" for a turn based game.
      Terminology aside though, best case scenario: dancing a dps unit allows you to remove 1 additional enemy from the battle. Definitely useful, and definitely the best option available sometimes.
      But I've found there are frequently better options available.
      Yunaka is in this scenario, paired with Corrin. If she engages, she can freeze up to 5 enemies in place with a normal attack, or 10 with her engage attack, neutralizing a massive threat, and making them easy to pick off safely for her allies. Granted, that's an ideal scenario, but immobilizing 3 with a normal is frequently available. Or dancing, you can make it 5-6. For up to 3 turns in a row if needed.
      Funnily enough, this tactic is actually at odds with the fog evasion build. If you've just immobilized that many foes, you don't actually need to be hiding in the fog. Although she still needs the fog while not engaged, but as you pointed out, this makes her a weak dance candidate, with the main benefit being you ran reposition her to an edge or corner of the fog so she can counter more enemies.
      The other big non-DPS options I dance a lot are Corrin's vein of Fire/ice to restrict enemy movement, either defensively to buy time, or offensively and allow allies to put allies in a position where they are shielded from enemy attacks, but will be able to safely reach a group of enemies next turn. Micaiah's Obstruct works in the same manner. Roy's Blazing Lion can also act as kind of a crappy version of this.
      You could also dance Micaiah to warp/rewarp/rescue up to 4 allies and herself up to 10 tiles away.
      Now, those can be huge, game changing plays, but they do require being engaged, and it's not always really important to get them done. So I'd say dps is most frequently the best dance option, but utility dances have the biggest impact on the game.

    Don't see any reason to switch her to a Sword class since the 1-range dagger series are just swords, but better. Same Mt, but less Wt, has base 15~20 crit depending on whether you upgrade Stiletto or Peshkatz, and Daggers inherently scale better with forges than any other weapon in the game (all daggers go up to +9Mt at +5 forge compared to every other weapon getting only 5~6 extra Mt at best).
    Wolf Knight with Canter paired with Corrin is a viable option if you want to make her a Player Phase debuffer, since you can poison enemies with Daggers inherently, make them immobile thanks to Corrin's Dreadful Aura ability, and -4 to all stats with Draconic Hex.
    Other options are the Wrath + Vantage crit build to stack with her passive and 1-range daggers naturally having crit. In those cases you'd either give her Ike for bonuses to Str and free Wrath, Erika for the bonus fixed damage from Lunar Brace, Roy for +Str and Hold Out, or also just stick to Corrin for producing Avoid tiles on her own.
    Common option is like you mentioned, just making her an Avoid tank with Marth's +Avoid skills and Knife Precision. If her Avoid gets too high with Corrin's avoid tiles, there's plenty of ways to manipulate it like using Erika's +Crit -Avo Engraving, or just taking one of the avoid skills off.
    Her Res is also the one thing better than Zelkov so she can take a couple of hits from enemy mystic/mages anyway.
    Can also recommend giving her the Energy Drop, since her Str growth is exactly the same as Zelkov so it should bring her in line with his bases.

  • @Requinix17
    @Requinix17 Год назад +1

    I dont think there's much of a point using the 1-range daggers. Being able to counter attacks from most archers and mages with poison is very helpful, and most of the time you're going to want to save the enemy's adjacent squares for your heavy hitters

    Its tough in Maddening because without a higher level of investment, Yunaka is overshadowed by Zelkov as a Thief. Shes still a great unit, but there's no reason to run two thieves.
    The one thing Yunaka does have over Zelkov is she's more specialized as a Mage killer. Her higher Res base and growths let her tank a spell that would otherwise ignore terrain bonuses and her lower Str stats wouldn't matter as much due to the low Def of mages. This makes her a great Wolf Knight candidate if you wanted to run both her and Zelkov.
    Alternatively, she could be a decent mage knight with some Mag investment
    Also Griffin Knight seems ok, but it would completely negate her personal as a Flying unit.

    I've been thinking like, why does the game give you such clear upgrades to previous units halfway through the game? But I realized that the edge someone like Yunaka has over Zelkov is that she's had the opportunity to inherit skills from the early game rings, and the big one here is probably Canto. You don't get Sigurd back for what, 8 chapters? That's a lot of time to have a significant skill advantage. So if you invest in her, there really is good reason not to just bench her when Zelkov comes around.

    When Zelkov joined at lvl 17, Yunaka was lvl 12 after using her since the start. I know she's good, but i think I'll swap her for Zelkov this time. Haven't used Zelkov yet.

    I’ve used Yunaka for a good while in my maddening play through. She’s definitely been tough to use, as I feel like she gets hit A LOT despite her high avoid (she has died to a 2% hit chance for me), while usually struggling to damage enemies.
    I gave her canter early on and it’s okay. Mainly helps for moving back into avoid terrain (although part of me thinks I could of saved for draconic hex).
    I’m VERY tempted to try making her a wolf knight (to see how effective hobble + canter would be), but I’m worried she won’t have enough avoid to reliably avoid tank. Reckon it’s worth doing with some skill inheritance?

    I know it's not Zelkov's turn, but I was hoping you were going to discuss them together. Is Zelkov just a better thief? Also since you talked about wolf knights, is Merrin just a better option there too?
    Is there a strat to using multiple thieves? 2 dodge tanks seemed redundant on my hard playthrough.

    Call me crazy but although I think Yunaka is very good as an offensive unit when invested the dodge tanking part everyone uses her for is such a weak option and that’s only because this game is Hybrid RN so if the hit rate is at least 1% you’re getting hit

    Yeh this video i heavily disagree with…
    I found Yunaka borderline unusable in maddening….
    Even feeding her kills in one run she was lvl 26 when i got Zelkov and Yunaka just BARELY had more strength then a lvl 17(?) Zelkov, and in both of their cases when enemies in maddening start having 30-40 defense they both barely do anything other than dodge tank and poison bosses.
    Shes pretty much only good early game in my runs, unless you class change her.

    Yunaka really should be an S unit. She trumps Zelkov because she comes insanely early in the game getting access to very early resources that Zelkov can never get access to at all. +4 1-2 range iron dagger that can never be broken is stupid powerful and with double evasion she's both a great early game tank and one of the strongest damage units.
    When you do the math for lv20 for them both she loses out in -5hp, -2str, -2def, +9 res, +5lck, -4 build. Their strength/speed are tied from lv20 or lv40. Yunaka wins out in speed more which offsets her slight build disadvantage to Zelkov. The build is very unimportant for early to mid-game because Steel/Iron Dagger does not weight down Yunaka at all. I do not see much value in using the 1 range daggers unless trying for a crit strategy. Late game is a little different, but I still do not see much reason to get off the 1-2 range daggers as attacking 2 range is usually better over 1 range enemies. However, by late game in fixed mode Yunaka overtakes Zelkov in speed while also being able to shore up her build after and any weight reduction.
    When it comes to tankiness at say lv40, Yuanka is -8hp, -6def, but gains +5lck, +14res compared to Zelkov. Throw in the dodge tanking where you can control the terrain you use usually Yunaka can survive about as many hits as Zelkov in more situations against mages or defensive units.
    In the end, Yunaka's early game contribution really pushes her ahead of Zelkov overall.

      Yunaka and Zelkov are both S but you need to feed yunaka exp early in order for her to remain strong. Pre ch. 10 she is indeed one of the better characters to invest in. However, zelkov just comes ready to go in ch 11, and that saved exp could go towards pushing other units.

      @@bpj_studio also need to remember Yunaka IS BULKIER then Zelkov. If Zelkov is hit he’s essentially dead where Yunaka can survive mages

    So if you leveled yunaka to 17 she would have 1 less speed and 2 less str. I'd say build is kinda irrelevant(except for peshkatz).
    Engage is a different game on maddening. With how little xp you get it doesn't make sense to keep the old characters. The new characters are essentially balanced around the map they come in on and the old characters aren't fed enough xp to be at the same level.
    I feel like the game is well balanced for the style it plays as.
    Normal=play anybody and you don't need to think too hard about being optimal
    Hard= play anybody but you will get punished if you don't also compensate for bad setups
    Maddening= optimize and replace weaker characters with the new characters

    I started a semi-ironman maddening playthrough recently. I say semi, because I still use the time crystal to go back a turn if Alear dies or if another character who's essential to the battle dies (like Yunaka in her starting chapter). Other than that, if one of my units dies, I let them die. I just don't want to restart the whole game if I get a game over screen. Anyways, I had like 10 or 11 units for chapter 9, but all but 3 units died because I made some stupid mistakes and got cornered by armored units. So, going into chapter 10, I had Jean, Alear, and Yunaka, but Jean died. I finished that battle with just those two because they were dodging everything.

    On my two runs, she just ended up being the hard carry both times. Fates Emblem on a Silver Dagger +4 and she's critting everything foolish enough to attack her and she's dodging almost every physical attack dished at her. I've found mages to be a bit problematic since they can ignore her dodge tile bonuses, but I found Alacrity+ to be enough so she can instantly nuke a mage on player phase without taking damage without hoping for a crit or a dodge. Pass can help her get into good positions to freeze large formations of enemies with Corrin's Engage, and abusing that was a crutch in Maddening, especially for boss takedowns.

    fun fact give her tiki for 5 levels and she renders the whole "Zelkov is superior cuz base stats 2 higher" argument worthless lol. Like the only thing Zelkov would still have over Yunaka is he wont need cover to troll his foes so he can be used without bushes nearby but i would prefer someone with higher offense potential as a thief over defense. There is nothing stopping you from using both however so why not just use 2 thieves if you have the ability to and not mess up team comp?

    I'mma be honest I just think she's overrated.
    Yunaka is usable out of the box, sure, but doesn't really offer that much unique in the role besides.
    Yunaka is a product of knives being good, of covert being good, and evasion tanking being good, but she's nowhere near the best unit for the role.
    Usable? Yes. Best unit in the game? God no.
    Frankly I don't even think Thieves are the best use of Corrin, the fire vein is SO good, and helps an entire team
