For all those who've seen these before, I've fixed a few mistakes (fittingly, I'd forgotten Bunet had +1 to his Luck cap) and added some new info to Celine (comments pointed out the Marth and Sigurd thing and I felt it needed mentioning), and tiny extra to Kagetsu's because lol.
Editing this together made me realize how much I miss this cast. I've realized that this is probably my favourite cast in the series gameplay-wise. Although there's some balance issues, everyone is usable as both a short-term and long-term unit and besides the trainees everyone joins at a good level for their chapter so can easily slot into a team.
Also, I just found out Engage has surpassed Three Houses (which itself had surpassed Xenoblade 2 AND 3) as my most-played Switch game!

On Panette: Her Proficiency in Knives makes it so that she gets S knives as a wolf knight, which is honestly nice since you can get both S rank knives from the story. Wolf Knight patches up her speed issue pretty well. When I did Maddening I had Wolf Knight Panette (with Wrath!) paired with Lucina, giving her the extra speed and dex she wants, along with a nice bonus of being able to dual assist poison.

    Berserker Jean (Byleth)
    Dance Seadall (Sigurd)
    Sniper Etie (Lyn)
    Sage Lindon (Micaiah)
    Fell Child Veyle (Celica)
I really like how between Emblems and the ability to reclass into anything you want with a little effort, combined with the fact that there isn't really any situation that goes "train as or you're screwed", means you're free to experiment and have fun with your teams. You could even go ahead and do -only challenge runs if you're so inclined.
I want to do another playthrough eventually, but I *did* promise I'd let my roommate borrow my copy once I beat the game. :P
And fun fact: Berserker Jean with Starsphere is one of the few units in the game that has a chance of getting +2 in a stat on level (in this case, HP).

Also Swordmaster Anna is interesting. Levin Swords, maybe?

    • @OrionTempest1
      @OrionTempest1 Год назад +2

@@BigKlingy Yeah - I went with Swordmaster because I wanted a good LUK cap; Swordmaster has the second highest non-DLC (37, while High Priest has 38 and Enchanter has 42), while still being a Backup class for support. Helped that Swordmaster actually has the second highest MAG cap out of all the Backup classes, even though it -is- just a measly 25.
She ended up capping everything for me while gold farming, being able to solo maps (that don't have lots of Backups) with 87 HP, 58 LUK, 149 Avoid (up to 179 on terrain), and Lifesphere + Unyielding for healing off stray hits and chain attacks. She can't one-round most enemies at this point of the game though, and High Priest enemies have enough RES to take single digit damage from her Levin Sword, but Tiki can clean those up after clearing out everything else since they can't hit her to begin with.
My Pact Ring choices ended up between Saphir and Rosado, tbh.

Despite what anyone says, I’m a officially a Fire Emblem fan thanks to Engage. This play has been fun. For better or worse, and I want to give my opinions on each unit.
0:00 Alear is the most standard lord, but Alear plays to the strengths of this game really well. Starting with the Marth Emblem and having low SP costs meaning that by getting to Rank 10 with Marth, which is easy to do, Alear can be a great dodge tank. Alear's exclusive class means he gets the most Emblem bonuses out of any character in the game until Veyle.
Really their main weakness is their magic stat, meaning that Celica and Micaiah aren't the best choices to boost Alear's damage. If there is any consolation to doing this, more magic for the Levin Sword (the only 1-2 range option they have unitl they get Wille Glanz), and with Micaiah, they give Alear extra range in Staves.
Alear is a lot more versatile than one might think because Alear takes full advantage of what the game wants you to do.
4:45 Vander is the Jaegan that will only last you for so long, but his personal skill is actual decent for Alear if they and Vander have the Killer Weapons. But really, the only way Vander can be useful is with Tiki and Edelgard Linage and Starsphere skills. If Vander wasn't a Jaegan, he would have been a great unit... I think.
7:34 You got extremely lucky with Clanne, #Clanne4Endgame
9:44 Framme is surprising useful thanks to being one of the only Qi Adepts in the game. It's just a matter of her getting good level ups is the problem. If Framme is just as lucky as Clanne was here, she can be the best Bond Shield user and Micaiah user. but again, that's if your lucky. I wasn't sadly and I gave her up.
11:58 Alfred. Poor Alfred, out of all of the Royals in the game, he got stuck with the worst class. The final stat cap for Avenir is not bad IMO, but the thing that could have made him better, was if Golden Lotus halved damage for ALL attacks. With Gentility, he would have made for a better tank. But no…
That being said, there is a reason why I kept him in my final team over Amber. As an early unit who will be able to use Marth and Sigurd after Chapter 3 that means he has more chances to get their skills while Amber joins around the time where will she won’t have enough time to invest. (Better than Jade at least, but still). Alfred is usable. That’s all I will say and I’m glad I didn’t give up on him. Alas, he could have been better.
14:47 Poor Etie, outclassed by Alcryst is every way. I’m sorry Etie fans, but in all of my Playthroughs, I just couldn’t find use for Etie. By the time I got Alcryst, I saw no point in using her.
    16:52 Early chain attack user. I guess…
19:49 A hybrid physical and magical attacking unit with Ignis, and staff utility. Céline has a lot to work with once she promotes, she starts with Celica and has the exact boosts she needs to make use of her starting ring right away.
As a Mystical unit she does more damage with Warp Ragnarok (boosted with Ignis). Her real weakness are the lack of build which holds her speed cap (which is not bad) and her stats aren’t nearly as high as others. But her luck makes her a great Byleth user.
22:57 Despite General not being a good class and one too many Lance Users (one of my biggest grips with Engage Gameplay wise), but I think Louis and Chloé does a better job with Lances. Louis with max build means that he can use both of the S Rank Lances better than Timerra since he doesn’t need speed and has more attack power. Louis and Sigurd is master piece of a pair because giving an Armor unit more Mobility is glorious.
25:29 Chloé is my favorite unit from Firene gameplay wise. She has good growths of Strength and Magic which lets her use all of the Emblems well to some degree, and her cap speed as Griffon Knight. It’s a chef’s kiss. Despite being another Lance user, it works because with Sigurd and Marth, they better mobility, attack power, and movement or speed. With a cap of 52, she always double and avoid getting doubled herself. And she has Staff usage. So feel free to use Micaiah on her. So I made my peace. Chloé is the best Firene character as a unit, I wished I like her character and support with Alear more.
28:10 One of the only main chain guards who will get thanks to his starting class. But as a trainee unit with healing, level up is a grind but will gain the boost in stats need to be great at anything.
But with the classes he is best known for (Martial Master and Martial Priest), do you make Jean into an another chain guard user, or a magic attacker with an S rank in Staffs? Pick your poison.
Other than that, Jean is whatever you want him to be if you’re diligent with him.
31:05 My girl, Yunaka! The Corrin Yunaka build is busted (a little bit too much), but I wonder if I should try a Wrath Vantage combo on her…? Hmmm. As I was saying, Yunaka is great for debilitating or killing.
34:01 Is the investment to get more money worth it? You tell me…
37:28 Alcryst may not be Diamant, but that Dex and Strength is all he needs to be better than Etie in every way. His personal promotional class skill Luna will Pierce through defense like a hot knife through butter.
Luna Astra Storm anyone. But part is, Luna works well with most other attacks as well with Crits to boost the damage. But as an Archer, without a mini bow, he’s going to be unable to Counterattack.
Overall, Alcryst is the best archer and one of the best units in Engage IMO.
39:48 Poor girl. Horribly outclassed by Kagetsu. But if you want to use her, I won’t stop you.
42:37 Citrinne is only here if Clanne and Céline aren’t making the cut. I will admit that she has potential for being a good Olwen user.
46:50 Diamant comes first here because he is the crown prince of Brodia and the first Roy user. Sadly, his poor Dex. I’m sorry but, Alcryst is better for damage control.
Despite that, he is a backup unit, so with Dual Assist, he can be a good Chain Attack assets. My personal favorite use for him is with Wrath and Vantage with Roy equipped. Diamant has better staying power than Alcryst. So that’s a huge point in his favor.
44:38 Amber turned out better than I thought. Maybe I treated him too harshly. But I doubt he will be on my Maddening team…
49:47 Poor Jade. Honestly, you really need to be conservative of Bond Fragments and Skill books if you REALLY want to use her, as to me, being an Axe Armored Unit is her saving grace. If it wasn’t for the Fell Xenologue where use can potentially get a better one sooner… oof
51:38 Ivy… Ivy Ivy Ivy. I really love Ivy, one of my favorites in the game but where as Bigklingy loves Ivy as a unit, I’m personally mixed. Thankfully, she starts with the Lyn Emblem, which fixes her main weaknesses (Speed and Dexterity). But good lord, it’s either focus on giving more power or making sure she herself doesn’t get doubled and killed or needing to hit. Because of her low Dex, I find her unbearable to use most of the time.
Speaking of her Dex, Grasping Void is extremely unreliable IMO. It only works with Tomes (so only Warp Ragnarok and Cataclysm will work) and it depends on the magic of her target when she may have the damage she needs to destroy Armor units.
That being said, her saving graces prevents her from being far from bad. Unlike Veyle, she has higher build and can fly, she has Staff usage, and is obtained earlier than Veyle.
Ivy made me realize how much I underestimated the Surge tomes in their usage.
56:08 Kagetsu. Need I say more? I like using him as Swordmaster, a bad class maybe, but I love that Critcal Hit animation.
54:35 I may *consider* using Zelkov in my Maddening Run *if* he does well…
58:21 Fogado is an interesting unit, he lacks the raw power of Alcryst and his Luna attacks and doesn’t have an S Rank in Bows.
But he makes up for it by being a Calvary Unit that can use Swords. And his speed cap is among one of the highest in the game.
Also, Back at you is a personal class skill that I don’t think is that good but still has some uses. He might work with a Wrath and Vantage combo when using Veronica as Reprisal will stack with Back at you for more damage.
1:00:29 Kagetsu as a healer. Another character I might consider for Maddening.
1:02:08 By the way, you can’t bring Bento 🍱 to the Fell Xenologue. Sorry Bunet.
1:03:45 Timerra. Ok @Bigklingy. I guess we are rivals now, you think Ivy is amazing while I am mixed, where I think Timerra is a great unit (albeit struggles a lot) while you think she is bad.
That being said, Timerra is not the best Great Aether user. Sandstorm is still satisfying to see activate and kill a unit Timerra would have struggled with otherwise. And by the way, I have reached the 400 hit damage with Timerra and Hector vs Wyvern Knights. It’s beautiful.
1:06:54 Merrin and the Wolf Knight, a great class for debilitating, great class for damage and with Sword and Knife usage, Merrin can be really enjoyable when invested in.

Etie is just better than Alycryst btw. I agree neither are super great but Etie has a massive strength lead (She comes at level 4 with 1 less than he has at level 10, if you use her at all it will be higher than his). The dex difference often doesn't matter since there are tons of engraves that boost hit and you should be using engraved weapons. For example, when both are 15/10 Etie will have 10 more strength than Alcryst, while Alcryst's only notable advantage is 3 extra speed. The speed lead is negligible since both want Lyn anyway and both don't double reliably without Lyn and do double reliably with Lyn. I'd rather reliably one-round with the massive strenght lead than have to rely on Luna rng. If you want a fast bow unit (on average a 5.5 speed lead when compared at 17/13, only growing more with time) Fogado also has far more power than Alrcryst with the Radiant bows massive base might while also having great synergy with Erika (lunar brace for his massive speed easily quadding with the brave bow and the + 5 raw damage from bravery and extra mag for the radiant bow). Use whoever of course, Alcryst keeps getting overrated though when he doesn't preform great. Thought he was better as well because he feels better on join but that's mainly just his better weapons when he joins (which both can use anyway) and many just ignoring Etie when she joins. When their stats are compared his aren't favorable.

I was surprised to hear the comments about Timerra. In all of my playthroughs, she always very quickly becomes one of my best units - particularly as a tank. A few level ups in her base class, and she becomes practically unkillable having really good Defense, Resistance, and Avoid. Paired with an Emblem that has Defense capabilities, such as Ike, Corrin, or Hector, she becomes an incredible unit for baiting enemies to their death. I find that she’s especially deadly when outfitted with a Killer Lance and a Spear to switch between depending on the situation. In doing this, it allows her to bait and just absolutely _obliterate_ hordes of enemies, or at least weaken them significantly so that other allies can quickly follow up.

One quick note about Diamant: His personal skill only requires that he initiates combat and the foe is able to counter attack. It does NOT require the foe be at full health (I believe you were thinking of Xander's Personal skill when you said that, as the two characters are quite similar and their personal skills are both related to honor).
This makes Diamant a very good Player Phase unit, as he still benefits from Fair Fight if he Breaks his opponent, making him a good initiator against Lance and Axe foes. If he doesn't kill them, he can then contribute with Dual Strikes when another unit moves in to mop up.
Diamant should usually be the first unit you use on your turn. You can also reclass him into Hero to further lean into this strategy with Brave Assist (while potentially giving him Lances, rather than Axes if you so desire, as he joins while you still have the Sigurd ring). Unless you plan on giving him something like the Ike/Hector or even the Roy ring and patching up his Dex with a Skill inherit from an Emblem Ring, it's probably better to straight up ignore Successeur, much like how Alfred tends to perform better as a Paladin, rather than as an Avenir.

I prefer to show the characters stats, growths and skills and give an overview of their individual strengths and weaknesses. I started a new playthrough recently, and I chose to use some characters I never used long term or at all in my previous runs. Like Chloe, Etie, Citrinne, and Bunet (…yes him. Also, lol thumbnail!).
Citrinne’s been an excellent Sage especially with Byleth equipped.
Etie’s tough to use because of her starting rut, but making her Warrior temporarily really fixed her.
Chloe’s done…Good Enough? I’ve had to rewind a lot for her because she kept dying, but she’s improved in the later half with the help of a Lyn/Sigurd skill combo. Hopefully that’ll stick.
And finally Bunet, I gave him a Speedwing after he joined, and he’s surprisingly gained speed on most of his levels, although his strength is lacking as a draw back. Otherwise, he’s been doing his job well enough as a mobile tank. Even gained some appreciation for him as a character in some of his supports, he’s actually quite wholesome when he’s not wanting to lick everything.

Personally, I found Boucheron to be the ideal character to turn into a Mage Cannoneer if you do the Fell Xenologue before chapter 11. His sizable Dex growth, along with solid Bld, means that he can hit decently hard with the cannons and have solid accuracy. And since he's firing from far away, you can very easily have Backup units there to support his personal skill. Chrom actually was a pretty fun character to use with him, since that way I got Robin to chain attack as well, and it bumped chain attack accuracy up to 90%.

I will help you with Timerra. Here is the most brainless way to get her 1 rounding (I have more high skill builds, but we will focus on this)
    Lance power 5, SPD+5, Sigurd.
I run T4 wells all game so I can afford to SP dump in this way to at least 3-5 units a playthrough but you could at the very least suggest this high SP cost build because she will 1 round at base no sandstorm, gets momentum damage, dex/def boost from sig and BLD increase.
    If you want something cheaper:
SPD+5/Resolve+. Fensilar +3-5/Javelin +3-5 Roy OR Eirika. This build can switch between these emblems, the emblems damage fix her, she can function as a main tank on either due to her high DEF and SPD/average res letting her EP a large number of enemies (tested/proven on my channel, also stress tested against 7+ CH23 maddening enemies hitting her per turn, with both emblems).
On the Eirika Front it lets her 1 round playerphase and typically on EP. Roy gives +6 STR/+8 when engaged, Roy also gives more SPD/dex/def/res and you can use Binding Blade to proc sandstorm 1-2 range and it is weightless on her as it has 8 WT.
I am fine with people not finding her good but you could at least have the game knowledge to share when going over units THIS LATE after release. You also could have just parroted builds from my or other channels so you at least have a build to discuss instead of writing off the unit and claiming she's unfixable when I had her 1 rounding Lumera/Sombron pre well maddning with just Sigurd SPD+5 and a brave lance, using probability math to produce sandstorms (She took off 2 healthbars)
If we can get her working before the well, we can certainly get her working afterwards.

1:24:50 The DLC and Endgame characters get their own comment here for spacing purposes.
Spoilers for the Fell Xenologue and Endgame
Nel and Rafal are great Extra Dragon Units. Their Dragonstones weaken defenses and with Draconic Hex, have the potential to do more damage.
    Nel focuses more on speed
    Rafal focuses on power.
Nel can be a Timerra esque Dragon with no Sandstorm.
While Rafal is Dragon Panette and his great Aether will do more damage overall thanks to his Dragon Class. The power difference is clear.
Zelestia is a flying Wyvern Knight with good synergy with most Emblems. But her Soulblade, IDK…
Madeline! Hard to use, but she is a good face tank with Tiki has her Emblem. And is the best user for the S Rank Axes.
    Gregory… eh… I had better mages.
Overall, how useful will they be to you depends on when you recruit them.
1:18:50 Best Mage in the game IMO. And a good final option. And with Thoron and Staff usage too. Sadly, has to wait until Endgame to be able to use Micaiah and Celica.
1:19:39 Saphir surprised me. Granted, saving in Chapter 19 is going to be a pain, but if she is lucky to survive, you may have another really good chain attacker with a hint of power being her attacks.
1:20:58 Mauvier is a free Staff bot unit and nothing more. The Flame Lance is just terrible. It’s a shame because he has a really good magic stat. Not helped by his build. And won’t be able to use Leif until after Chapter 22.
1:22:38 I love Veyle. She may be a late game unit, but she is the only other Dragon unit in the game. Meaning that she will get the most benefits from using Emblems (especially the magic ones, Soren most of all).
She has a magic knife and a Crit tome exclusive to her and when fully trained, has the highest magic stat of any non Sage character in the game.
If not going for the insane Soren combo, she still can be a value support unit with Corrin’s Dragon Veins and Draconic Hex, Byleth’s all stat boosting Instruct and Goddess Dance, and Micaiah for an extra healer.
Finally, her personal skill allows for better tanking prowess. Like Alear, she can be a magically destroyer or a useful support unit. No wonder she is the last unit in the game.

So somethings I did my first run
I reclassed Chloe to Royal Knight. I found this kept most of the perks of Griffon Knight, while only losing flying access which would be a big loss but Sigurd gives enough movement anyways for it to work. It also allows Chloe to be a good mixed attacker, using her magic and the flamelance to be really effective.
I also reclassed Anna to Wolf Knight and gave her a levin sword. Really effective unit able to dodge tank most things, retaliate, have good luck, and just be a great money farmer.
Getting into DLC here, but Citrinne I kept as a Sage, but I gave her Soren. This combined with Roy's holdout brought back the days of Awakening Nosferatsu tanking and turned her into a big enemy phase clearer.
I also gave Camilla to Panette, enhancing her mobility and letting her in a big AOE with a big axe for big damage.
Also some minor reclass bits I found useful, Jade really suffers when using axes, so I reclassed her to the sword variant and have had no issues with her. Swords really fix her hit rate issues and make her able to nearly stand equal to Louis.
Yunaka did fall off for me on hard, but I did train her back up to be top tier in endgame. In particular, she did really well as a Halberdier when I put her there to patch up her stats.
Celine despite being a mixed attacker was my best magical unit until I trained Citrinne up near lategame. Even then she still hit hard and her versatility was always useful.
Framme also fell off but then I made her a high priest and she became godly.
Final unit I want to mention is Lapis, personally I kept her as swordmaster, and found that by investing heavily into crit on her she was able to keep up, especially with Chrom's skill making crits deal more damage.

  • @CaTastrophy427
    @CaTastrophy427 11 месяцев назад

Okay, specifically with DLC, Anna becomes arguably the best tank in the game, fearing literally nothing besides the final boss, enemy engage attacks, the fell wyrms with 4 range attacks, and post-endgame tempest trial difficulty units. Oh, and enemy High Priests with their maddening skill. Kinda also enemies with Silence or Fracture staves, but she has such high staff avoid (101, to be exact) that many don't even try to use them on her (since for both of them, the staff's base hit requires them to have 32 dex to have a 1% chance to hit her, which, fun fact, most enemy staff users don't have, since the cap for them is 31).
As a High Priest, she caps out at a whopping 100 damage output exactly (96 as a Sage), not including crits, enemy res, or chain attacks. This is with a Revelations-engraved Elthunder+5, allowing her to counter longbows too - and countering is what she does, with Vantage, Reprisal from Veronica's bracelet, and Hold Out. Speaking of crits, she has a decently high crit rate (46% if enemy dodge is 0, meaning it'll usually be above 33%), so she often does over 200~250 damage to enemies. She has even oneshot one of the final boss's HP bars on Maddening despite the gimmick still being partially in play (FB+, IIRC). She can even lean further into the crit side of things with Wrath if you devote a turn or three to chipping her HP with Vein of Flame tiles instead of bringing Hold Out. By doing that, her crit rate goes up by 30, all the way to 76% before support bonuses.
She's a consistent MVP alongside Panette (same build but Wolf Knight with Blazing-engraved Cinquedea and Roy's ring) and Spoiler Character 2 (Soren's bracelet, Fates-engraved Spoiler Tome, Divine Pulse+, and Mag/Dex+5 or Quick Riposte). All three of them can and have one-round the Maddening final boss's crystals from full when the gimmick is only half-solved.
Now, I will say, anyone can do the same thing as her if given the same class, tome, bracelet, and skills, but her growths in particular make her the best suited for capping the three stats the build cares about (HP, Mag, and Dex, with Luck and Res as mostly an added bonus). She and Spoiler Character 1 are also the only two units in the game who have a positive cap modifier for both Mag and Dex. Since you recruit the latter so late into the game it's hard to really build them into much of anything, she's definitely the better option. Lindon could be better too, since many enemies will have better than B ranked weapons, giving him +20 crit, but... same issue as Spoiler Character 1, recruited too late to do much of anything.

Your talking 40 characters to get through in less than 2 hours,
It does kind of show that the bios are mostly meant to be a small part of another video and not entirely detailed overviews of the characters your talking about rather than dedicated videos in themselves, by comparison the Awakening Bios total 8 hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds combined, even before considering that they involved things such as voice acting trivia that is still a longer time spent on individual characters, hence why they are entirely separate videos, Despite there being less character bios in that series, only Morgan of the second generation characters actually got one.

for example using Holy Knight Benedetta as a Vengeance user/ Long Range Bow unit/ /Healing and Rescue support that’s still a large amount of basic ideas a character can fulfil, or Wyvern Lord Annette, which has a more concise design, that being that she has the Lighting Axe combat art, good magic regardless of class and hence can be a long range one shot machine or a Bolt Axe if you need range, it is not a build I would consider to be without issue, as it’s very resource intensive since your using mainly Combat Arts and a weapon with very limited uses and uses somewhat rare forging material
As while you can build a lot of those games characters for a lot of roles there are many that are easier to do, easier to understand or make use of their strengths more and hence can be useful as a summary of what they are generally good at/want to be that can vary between the unit amount of strengths and weaknesses.
Albeit even then that is character specific, for example I feel like Caspar and Linhardt would be restively short, Caspar only has Axe and Brawling proficiencies and has weaknesses in Tomes and Bows, Hence he only really fits going through Brigand and Brawler related classes, eventually ending up a Wyvern Lord, War Master or Grappler, Linhardt stats and the fact that he has a spell list with quite a few good spells like Physic means that only the magic classes really make sense to talk about going through pure Magic classes.
By comparison, Sylvain works as really anything but an Archer, Cyril seems to be able to use anything that is remotely considered meta in Three Houses which isn’t a magic class, or you have more unique cases like Yuri and Balthus, whose large amounts of strengths and weaknesses limit them to mostly infantry classes, hence they can use the Fetters of Dromi Canto ability and not have it be reducing or using the Vajra Mushti.
