"Like licking a stave." 🤣 Oh, God, I remember buying a large bottle of Jim Beam Devils Cut from a liquor store in the south of Spain some years back. My wife and I have a place down there in the Axarquia region of Malaga and it was during high summer which was scorching hot. It's quite probably the worst bottle of whisky I've ever purchased. Literally like sucking on varnished wood. Being the booze monster I am I used it to make gigantic highballs to cool down and get a pleasant buzz during the sweltering afternoons.
Sad to say that this range doesn't seem to have left a particularly positive impression and it's the same old story. Young spirit and/or blasted with oak to make it saleable without decent maturation in good casks. Release it at high strength to give it some power to compensate but it's far from convincing.
Great review as always Chris. These are reviews and the purpose of which is to give independent and fair opinion. I think you do just that. WT
You got a sample of cask No.1! Great line up. I love the octave’s and longer maturation in refill would be fascinating to try in a few years if they have laid some down.
Hi James. Thanks for watching and thanks again for the samples.
My experience with a few Dornoch bottles is that they are getting better when they are open for a few weeks/months. More fruit comes up and that brings the oak more to the backround/
Thanks for your comment. A number of people say the same thing with regards to bottles being open for awhile. I suppose the air helps to open the whisky up. I must admit It's one thing that I don't pay too much attention to.
Cheers Chris, nice review. Managed to get one a PX cask one on ballot recently so intrigued to see what you thought of these. Slainte..
Thanks Tim
