  • Since this dub never got a home video release, and all the off-air footage that's surfaced is such low quality, i decided to painstakingly identify each shot and reassemble the intro, using Shout Factory & Rhino's DVDs.
This dub was done for TV, and unfortunatly never recieved a VHS or Beta release outside of the movie dub. G.i. Joe was unfortunatly a bit of a failure in japan, mostly seen as a cult series among those who grew up with it.
4 episodes are used for additional footage for this opening, they are:
Cobra stops the world (Mass Device episode 1)
    Cobra Soundwaves
    Operation mind menace
And suprisingly, More than meets the eye part 1?! Yes!, Transformers footage was repourpased for G.I. Joe's japanese dub! Specifically the opening seconds of MTMTE part 1, used as a generic space background for the logo (the same way it's used for the japanese dub of transformers).
This was a few months in the working, Shot hunting & so on, finaly getting the last piece we needed today.
Hope you enjoy this rarely seen gem, fully restored to DVD Quality!
Special thanks goes to ‪@scrap-iron3969‬ for the video & Audio! please check him out

Unfortunately, it’s quite The obscure production, it never got any home video releases outside of a dub of the movie. Takara seemingly picked up the series, expecting it to be a hit, and it was seemingly a flop. The toys can be found mint in box ,mint on card for relatively cheap, which goes to show that a lot of them went unsold.

It did not last, it was only the first season, and it was only on TV minus a release of the movie on VHS, it’s a pretty obscure line over there, but it’s fondly remembered by those who saw it

@@ViewpointProd That explains why there's only one G.I. Joe anime when Transformers had just...so many. What was it? Like 3 for G1, they had 2 more for the Beast era, the Unicron Trilogy, Transformers Go, and some weird short form comedy series made to basically say how crappy the NES game was. G.I. Joe only gets Sigma Six, and I can't even find evidence of it airing there.

well Toei did animate it too

@@primusvsunicron1 Just because a Japanese animation firm made it doesn't necessarily mean that they also air it. And even when they do, most likely they don't run to completion. There are even cases where a short lived anime gets more episodes specifically for the Western market and they never air in their native country. Sonic X's third season and the extra episodes of Voltron featuring the Golion characters for example.

I like GI Joe the Japanese Version!

Very impressive. :) Terrific job. :) Especially given your limited resources etc. :) Japan probably felt obligated to air this due to the partnerships formed by all the companies concerned, Toei and Takara with Hasbro, Sunbow and Marvel. But yeah military toys don't tend to sell as well as say robots do. ;)

It's sad that there's so little trace of it online, 2 rips of the intro, and some audio uploaded by the channel Scrap-Iron that he's synced to Hasbro's yt uploads. Wish this got some kind of dvd release but unfortunatly never did.

@@ViewpointProd It's likely that (perhaps) the masters were erased or recorded over after broadcast as well. These were probably dubbed for a one (or two) time airing before doing so. As you said, this show wasn't as successful as Transformers and only has a small cult following in Japan. Though maybe the masters have been preserved, but still, it's unlikely it will get a full release in Japan due to how niche it is. The best we will probably get as these and perhaps other uploads direct from TV recordings at the time.
