This is an update of a previous video ( • The Lion King | Mega D... ) fixing some issues expressed in the comments and also adding Amiga. The console versions were played by me and the Amiga is from www.recordedamigagames.org/ (Amiga Longplay # 53) MD and SNES are 60 Hz and Amiga is 50 Hz.
What isn't immediately obvious in this video is that Amiga has problematic controls and collision detection with the enemies - especially jumping and grabbing onto ledges, or slashing (as adult Simba).

The only thing that bothers me is Simba's roar. In the Genesis version he sounds like a cub pretending to be adult, which is how it should be. But in the SNES one he meows, wtf?
It's an issue with the SNES sound hardware: It's forced to use shorter/lower quality samples due to the SNES's sound RAM limit of 64KB
@@solarflare9078 And in the Genesis version, when he gets hit as young Simba, the adult version of the clip plays (instead of "Ow!") in all levels EXCEPT The Stampede (where the correct sound is played) for some reason.
If any of you are wondering why there are weird vertical lines in the Genesis version, it's so the colors would be blended on a composite TV. The Genesis didn't have a very big color palette to work with compared to the SNES or even the Amiga, so the illusion of more colors could be created this way.
it noticed that too, similar to those lines on older computers, like the C64 for example :-)
Honestly didn't even notice any weird vertical lines.
Whatever trickery they used, it worked, as the colors actually look much better on the Genesis than they do on the SNES.
It's called dithering. The MegaDrive/ Genesis would use this to fake extra colors and transparencies. A CRT TV would blend the colors together to simulate these effects.
The Amiga has a palette of 16,777,216 colours which is 16,744,448 more colors than SNES. Using standard resolutions together with blitter and copper, it is possible to display thousands of colours on screen without any slowdown. Using ham mode, it is possible to display 18bit screens and using faster processors, it is even possible to play movies in ham modes without much artifacts using different methods.
So it is not logical to say "The Genesis didn't have a very big color palette to work with compared to the SNES or "even the Amiga". Amiga is master race here.
The Genesis version is obviously outstanding!
No the Super Nintendo game is better
@@heatherjohnson6836 No way... Greater visual field, better soundtrack and more accomplished effects. SEEEGGGAAAAA !!!
@@CrystallumsDude, you are so exaggerating.
@@LITTLE1994 I don't think so... you say that because you didn't live through the 90's.
The sound effects in the Genesis version are pure farts.
4:30 respect, this is not as easy as it seems to be.
awesome job, insanse editing subscribed
This is hard. Technically the Snes sounds the best out of the three, but the Mega Drive's FM Ocelator makes the music sound so freaking good that I actually prefer it for every level except Elephant Graveyard. In terms of Audio, Amiga wins Elephant Graveyard.
Visually, the Amiga has the best looking opening, and a lot of better looking sprites, but much like the SNES, they seem washed out and less vibrant. The MD's sprites are more compressed and pixelated, but the colors just pop out at you. However, the Volcano level looks miles better on MD. The lava effects alone beat the other two.
Voices sound better on SNES.
Amiga also seems to have some performance issues, but having never tried that version, it could just be a video issue. I would have to say MD is the better version of the three, but the SNES makes a strong case
if the performance issues you are talking about are the judder thats happening on the Amiga version, thats most likely because this youtube clip is running at 60hz whereas the Amiga version of the game was at 50hz, I remember the game being slick smooth.
I am wondering, is this the A500 version of A1200 version because it's definitely using more colours than the MD version and in some places it looks like it's using more than the Snes version as well.
I did state it could be a video issue
Neocortex Lab Could be, The A500 was capable of more than we saw, I saw a fighting game called Effmania and the visual, colours, animated background is a clear sign of how poor something like Street Fighter 2 was on the A500, could of been so much better, same with the music.
I would have to agree. Can we put a ban on SNES fanboys. I am all for calling a good SNES game, but I am sick of their bias. It's like they try to convince people to buy and play SNES - Nintendo game magasine style.
@@paul1979uk2000 The Lion King was an AGA game only so, no A500 version.
one of the best Lion King here on youtube and the one you made is very top
Thanks.
Haha, funny how in the stampede level, only the Amiga version has the lighting done properly with the left cliff being in shade and the rock shadows are rightfully on the right side because the light is coming from far left... however in MD and SNES versions, the cliffs are flipped. 14:18 EDIT: In fact, the cliffs on the Amiga version are completely different sprites.
I noticed that right away as well :)
Yet on the Amiga version there is no stampede in the background.

Super Nintendo's Timon: It starts.
Genesis' Timon/Mega Drive's Timon: It starts.
Amiga's Timon: It star-
I noticed that as well. Probably just cut off when editing the video
Sums up the Amiga version: Incomplete
This is another of those cases in which the SNES pallet doesn't do it for me. Too pastel in places stark contrast would suit the mood better.
At the end, when the show the final fight, the Amiga seemed to take over, the animation for it and the fighting moves looked much better than the other two. The spinning paws with the motion blur looked much better
On genesis Timon's voice better

17:33 the sound of the voice is sharper in the Mega Drive. SNES sounds as if they were using some kind of filter..
Mega Drive Version + Snes Version = Amiga Version xD
+Canal Vc Decide
Amiga version is by far the worst. It lacks many levels (even if it came on 4 floppies) and has others issues. I would rather say Amiga + SNES = Mega Drive -> proper 320x224 resolution + all content. Then MD and SNES both have pros and cons but overall I prefer the MD version (higher resolution, better controls, better music IMO...).
Amiga version I think is as smooth as the other versions but you need a 50hz screen and a 50hz video to see that. recording 50hz Amiga to a 60hz video results in this. The game is missing levels because the programmer did not have enough time. By the way Amiga has parallax scrolling as well as far as I can see
+Ancalimon
Still amiga version already needs 4 floppies, not as handy as console versions. Also loading times of course (that being said some SNES games have loadings too lol).
No they are not. Most PAL Amiga games run at 50fps and some 25 fps. 3d games are different of course. Especially on slow processors they run slow.
Lion King runs at full 50fps.

I wonder if the Amiga could have handled Earthworm Jim. It's weird that such a successful game wasn't released for it so maybe it was due to technical issues.
Great game, no matter the platform. I finished it last week and it is really challenger.
I notice both of these look very crisp, and there are a areas where dithering is obvious, suggesting no smoothing filter is used. However, a lot of the places where there is nice smooth colour in the mega drive version don't appear to be dithered.
In the amiga and Dos versions,if you take the blue beetle or the african red bug, roar is more powerful and you can take more hits, but the roar and energy bar don't update graphically
Hello. I suscribe your channel. Like
suprised that Westwood (the Dune 2 and later Command and Conquer, RTS dedicated Westwood!) actually developed the game!! Also, awesome music on the Amiga version...but: the sound fx are more abundant on the consoles. And I have to admit, the Genesis framerate (not it's colors) is superior of the three. Finally, because of the Amiga's floppy disk format, there's a lot of content missing. Too bad the PCMCIA cartridge port on the side of the A1200 was never used...
Snes graphics, Megadrive music. Amiga...nice to meet you!
Kind of seemed more like the opposite to me... more like megadrive graphics and snes music...
I love on this order : Snes Amiga and Genesis
13:44 now that's a major change on the AMIGA version: No Wilderbees in the background and the shading of the 2 canyons have been swapped
swapped LIGHT'S SUN :0
Wilderbees? Now I'm imagining black and yellow striped wildebeest with stingers instead of tails. Thanks! My day needed a touch of whimsy :)
wow, the Amiga looks surprisingly crisp
Agreed. SNES and Amiga seemed really good, but when the first hyena appears, you can really see the greater detail and animation on the Amiga version
The Amiga is used in development of a lot of games from this era. It would not surprise me if Lion King was not one of those titles.
It does. I wonder why it didn't have all of the levels. I know my gameboy version didn't btu that's because well it was a game boy port. I feel like the Amiga could have handled all of the levels.
@@littlesongbird1 They did not finish the game. It was released in beta state.
The brightness on the SNES port looks blown out like a GBA game.
Sound effects let down the sound in the Amiga (AGA apparently and evidently). Some people sure don't like the Amiga version but I don't think it looks goo bad. It should blow you away more than that being AGA though.
I like the amiga port. Got a copy for like nothing ;)
I have the three versions myself plus the PC one as well.
The Amiga has resolution, color and sound but misses a few animations and sound effects and slows down quite often.
The Mega Drive/Genesis has resolution, contrast and responsiveness but the sound really isn't the best.
The Snes has color and sound but slows down a bit for a few times and also feels the less responsive.
I'd say the best one is the Mega Drive/Genesis version because the game itself plays better.
The Snes was know for slowing down a lot with many games, the Mega Drive didn't have the sound or colours like the Amiga could do and I think if it was a well optimised port and the game was complete, the A1200 version likely would have been the best.
I say that because the A1200 could do the same amount of colours the Snes could but also had a lot more colours it could use over the Snes, the sound chip even though the Snes was better by having more channels, it doesn't seem to matter for this kind of game so both could have sounded the same.
Unfortunately, the game was done in a short space of time for the Amiga version and likely wasn't as optimised as well as the other two and hence why it was missing levels even thought it seem like they ware done but wasn't in the game.
The music on the MD/Genesis version seems slightly faster than the SNES version. There's a transition at 3:03 that highlights this. Also, I'm curious. Are you using real hardware or emulation? I took a look at another comparison (to try and compare music) on a channel named Game vs Game. I'm guessing he's using real hardware as he has the cartridges. In his video the colours/contrast looked more pleasing on the SNES whereas I favour the MD/Genesis version in your video (although the dithering is much more apparent).
In exile, there is a hidden path in which case if you roll you can get to the bug for bug toss and for Hakuna matata the bonus round bugs are different in the Genesis version it’s for bug toss in the snes version it’s bug hunt
Awesome
Jude Lee Haha, i like genesis music too. Streets of rage, sonic etc. But, in this case, snes wins.
Wow! Amiga had HDR Gamin in 90s!?
I was lucky, I played both version as a kid :) I owned the Genesis I have played my friend's snes version. I used to covet his version not really appreciating my version. Funny enough I have finished snes version before the genesis version (snes version played easier than the genesis version for some reason). I was been fascinated how both snes and genesis version of many games including the street fighter series and even MK. Too bad there were no genesis version of KI. Good Times! Comparing both version I liked snes version of Hakuna Matata and genesis version of pride rock best.

I was thinking of doing a comaprison of the Aladdin video game but instead of comparing the SNES verison with that of the Genesis, would you consider comparing the Genesis version with the Amiga version since they're almost identical?
But isn't the conversion of Aladdin for the Amiga actually only for the 32bit Amigas? The AGA Chipset ones?
@andyukmonkey this game is only for AGA as well.
I just watched a video that compared Amiga/SNES Aladdin

You missed PC DOS version.
Every port of this game has it's own unique features, except Amiga one that's clearly inferior. Each one tries to work with each system limitations, except PC one that was clearly ported over from SNES and wasn't using PC capabilities at their full potential.
Let's compare:
1. Resolution:
SNES: 256x224 - lowest of all, you have limited view on every level,
SEGA and Amiga: 320x240 - highest, square pixels for 4:3,
PC: 320x200 - it uses same sprites as other version so can be played with 16:10 aspect ratio for square pixels. Best for widescreen monitors.
2. Colors:
SNES: Max 256 colors at once from 15 bit palette, limit 16 color per sprite. Most of the times uses 128 or less colors.
SEGA: 64 colors from 512 color palette. Game is more colorful, because Genesis palette lacked washed colors.
AMIGA: 32 colors from 18-bit palette. Furthermore it was divided to 16 colors for foreground and 16 for background, because game used dual layers (4+4 = 8 bit) for parallax scrolling. Colors match those from SNES because of much wider palette than Genesis. The Stampede level has much more colors because there's no need for parallax and game works in 64 or 128 color mode in this level.
PC: uses 256 color mode from 18-palette, but carries over SNES limitations. You can see dithering on almost every background even though there's only about 128 colors used from 256. PC's didn't have sprites so there wasn't limit to 16 colors per 16x16 pixel blocks. Title screen and other cut scenes are taken over from SNES and aren't full screen since 256 vs 320 width. Some sprites like Pumba were redone for PC without any dither.
3. Music:
SNES: uses 6-7 voices and 8 is for sound effects. Sounds good, but low mixing resolutions is making sound dull.
Genesis: this game brilliantly uses FM chip with 1 channel PCM. It's sounds great on Genesis, although it's still a FM music not as good for natural sounds used in lionking.
Amiga: 4 channel PCM, it lacks 2 additional tracks from SNES but it's mixed at much higher resolution. 44 kHz mixing gives music a much more fidelity.
PC: Well it has same music as Amiga and it's quality depends on the sound card used. Since Lionking on PC had very high requirements like fast 486 for 60+ fps, it could use 6-8 channel music from SNES. Also GUS could mix at least 16 channels in hardware with some DSP effects. By the time this game was released almost every PC had CD-ROM, so it could be a CD game with CD music.
Final Thoughts:
Genesis and SNES versions looks as most polished ones.
Amiga was also good but suffered from hardware limitations. It's lacking 2 and 6 level, probably because it would require another diskette. It also suffers from long loading times like most Amiga games on floppies.
PC port is probably the best for playing this game today. It supports widescreen and it can be easily run in DosBox. This port wasn't as polished as others and despite very high requirements (it required computer that could run some of the PSX era games) it carried over SNES limitations.
This game should be given a modern remake, but with old pixel art graphics. Just give this game more colors and better music.
Your point for the Amiga is not correct.
2. Amiga has two versions i.e. AGA and non-AGA versions.
Amiga with AGA chipset has 24bit (16 million) color palette. Without any color compression tricks, Amiga AGA can display 256 colors via it's 8 bit(256 color) bit plane registers. Search in RUclips for Lion King AGA
Amiga OCS(Original Chipset) and ECS(Enhance Chipset) chipset has 12bit (4096) color palette. Without any color compression tricks, Amiga OCS/ECS can display 32 colors or 64 color (Halfbrite mode) via it's 6 bit plane registers.
Ok, AGA has 24bit palette, but it actually doesn't really matter. 15, 18 or 24 bit palettes are visually equal when used in 256 color modes and on TVs.
Although AGA can display 256 colors on screen at once, this mode was rarely used in games, because it was very slow. Also, as I mentioned earlier Lionking on Amiga used special mode that allowed for dual layers, but colors were further limited to two 16 color layers ( 4 bit + 4 bit = 8 bit). It was necessary for getting parallax scrolling.
PC port uses 256 colors but everything is done in software. For smooth 60 fps you need a fast 486 CPU, way faster than CPU found in Amiga 1200.
Lionking wasn't even using all the AGA features. Copper could push hundreds of colors in the background. Same goes for PC, where SNES limits were carried over. It was just a very basic console port.
Consoles had common ground in displaying graphics. PCs and Amiga were different in their unique way. When programmed right games could achieve things impossible for consoles. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of interest in making high quality ports for computers. At the time Lionking was released Amiga was pretty much dead as commercial platform and PCs were taking over.
Given enough time Amiga port would be better and PC port would be superior to every other version, but it also was running on most expensive hardware.
At least this port was on par with console versions, not the case of the NES era games:)
***** The problem with 256 colors is with disk storage not with graphics performance i.e. A1200 has zero improvements with disk storage relative to A500.
A500 has 16bit bus for it's chipset that can sustain 6 bit plane (64 colors EHB) graphics draw while A1200 has 32bit bus for it's chip set that can sustain 8 bit plane (256 colors) graphics draw.
The storage for 8 bit graphics data is larger than 5 or 6 bit graphics data and A1200 has zero improvements with disk storage relative to A500. CD32 has improved disk storage via CD for better 256 colors usage.
A1200 can handle 256 colors Super Street Fighter 2 port, but it comes with many disk swapping. For 256 colors, it needs either hard drive or CD-ROM storage e.g. CD32 version SSF2T. Amiga's SSF2T needs 68030 accelerator.
VGA wasn't optimized for scrolling type games, but it's chunky format design was ready for Doom type games. CD32 comes with planar-to-chunky converter but Commodore didn't increase 68020EC's clock speed. Motorola wasn't able to lower 68040's price relative to cheaper RISC CPUs e.g. SuperH.
During the early 1990s, my parents has 386DX33 has Cirrus Logic GD5426 (i.e. same chipset as with Amiga's Picasso II add-on).
Amiga's Pinball Illusions AGA is identical to PC VGA version.
Motorola(expensive 68040 relative to falling 486 prices), PC's Doom and XOR patent killed Commodore-Amiga.
Long term CPU partner with good road maps are important. Apple learnt the importance of CPU road maps and delivery with dead end Motorola 68K e.g. IBM PowerPC 970 wasn't pref/watt and pref/price competitive against Intel Core 2.
VGA wasn't optimized for scrolling type games is true ... but as long as you CPU is fast enough to feed your video memory, you can do perfectly smooth scrolling. VGA graphics is more or less just a memory area where you tell the CPU to draw the picture in it which will be displayed on screen.
Also, by 1994, the vas majority of VGA video cards were actually SVGA cards which supported higher res modes/color depht. In fact, I've only see once a VGA video card which had only 256KB of video memory (the bare minimum you needed to call your video card a VGA video card) and this was inside a laptop.
Other than this, all the VGA expansion card I've seen were at least 512K. And even with 256KB of video memory, most SVGA card will be able to display 320*240 images with a 24bit color depht.
However nobody did use this until the end of the pentium era, probably due to the fear of incompatibilities or that the game would require high-end CPUs to feed the VRAM fast enough
Remake?, Huge Yes. Pixel Graphics?. Huge No. this game, with all its Nostagia, Deserves the Ducktales Remastered Treatment. it would be Way Better with Cell Shaded Graphics. it could look Exactly like a 2D Version of the Movie. we don't need a useless remake that looks exactly like the same 16 bit version, only in HD. whats the point in that?. if you want to play the same looking game, with the best graphics aviable at the moment. then just play the original genesis version, on a genesis thats on an HD tv, and fix the picture to your liking.
All thease great games could be appeared in SEGA CD ! Se how good is Mickey Mania ! : (
You know, I keep staring at the mega drive version and how much of the graphics has patterns of vertical lines in it...
And I couldn't figure out why you'd draw it that way.
Then I realised that this is either the output of an emulator, or RGB capture from a console.
If you use composite out, adjacent pixels tend to blur together.
And... Certain patterns end up looking like different intermediate colours.
So in other words it's a trick to make it look like there are more colours than there really are, but it fails because it's not being shown through composite video...
It's called dithering. Every systems up to the Nintendo 64 more or less use dithering. There are different kinds of dithering: checkered dithering, vertical dithering... Some dithering patterns are intended to be mixed together while others, not really.
Personally I have most of my retro systems hooked in RGB (Amiga, Mega Drive, SNES...) so dithering patterns are always visible and I prefer this way since RGB gives better colors and these systems are meant to be played on CRT screen which smooth out the visuals (dithering included) with their scanlines (and scanlines can be reproduced on HD TVs or emulators by using filters).
Genesis always dominates in the sound department when it comes to percussion and drum beats. And the sound is a lot clearer on the Genesis also
I've never been so torn on a multiplat. I hate the vertical lines on Genesis, but hate the condensed horizontal view space on SNES (lower horizontal resolution). Love the Genesis music, and faster parallax scrolling, but love the expansive color palette on SNES (look at that title screen!). Love the vibrant, bright colors on Genesis but hate the washed out look on SNES.
If you look closely you will see the MD/Amiga have two layers of parallax in the background and on the SNES just one single layer....which is probably related to why the floor in SF2 has no parallax perspective on the SNES either. Slow 12 bit CPU
SNES's 65C816 CPU is a 16 bit variant of WDC 65C02 and CSG/MOS 6502.

It's because of the crt you have been using.
In SNES version he is using some smooth filter. You can see it when he zooms in both screens (in example, in the gorilla battle).

Megadrive wins
I'm curious why the sample quality is watered down on the SNES compared to the Amiga...
The Amiga version had a better soundcard. It was designed for the Amiga 1200.
@@colliric That was the case for many games on the Amiga and Snes, even thought the Snes had a better sound chip, the Amiga sounded better on a lot of games and that likely was because the Snes had limits in using 65k for sounds and cartridges was a premium, the Amiga had floppies which ware dirt cheap and if I recall, I think the Amiga didn't have any limits on how big songs could be and I do recall seeing songs being as big as 200k and 300k, even bigger so that will definitely sound better for the samples.
Also, I think the A1200 could sound better then the A500 even thought it was technically the same sound chip.
@@paul1979uk2000 The sound ship was never improved on any Amiga model. It was the same old Paula. Snes sound chip has its own advantages and Paula has its own. Overall, Snes is better for games (more channels) while Amiga has better sound quality. Paula can do 14bit 57000khz
@@ancalimonungol It was a big oversight to not improve the sound chip on the Amiga 1200, but even without that, I tend to find music to be more pleasing to the ears than the Snes as the Snes sounded a lot more muffled and low quality samples compared to the Amiga in a lot of games, so even thought the Snes had a better sound chip, the Amiga sounded better on a lot of games, even on a lot of the same games on both systems.
@@paul1979uk2000 Commodore would still be around producing Amigas if they knew what they were doing. They had a gem like Amiga and they screwed up. Not improving the sound chip was just one mistake among loads of others. Games had content cut because Amiga had double density floppy disk as standard. They did not include fastmem which resulted in twice as much slow cpu speed. (amiga has two memory buses. Chipmem which can be accessed by all chips and fastmem which can only be accessed by cpu. adding only a few fastmem results in double speed). These are just some mistakes Commodore made.
sega have more dark colors snes more visual efects in main tittle
Genesis Wins! ;)
Mega drive all day long
Was it an AGA only game?
yes
And now I have nintendo switch version ❤❤❤❤
tbh i prefer the music in the snes version better and i kind of find the sound effects for the genesis a bit overwhelming there's just to many. the voice lines do sound better on the genesis ver though.
Amiga Has SNES Sound
however the version of amiga has a lot of bugs and cuts two levels I can't wait to be king Hakuna matata And the bônus
Both sound chips are PCM-based, unlike the Genesis' FM chip. That's why they sound so similar.
mega drive + SNES soundtrack would make it perfect but the winner to me will always be mega drive.
SNES has best visuals and sound effects, Genesis has the best music. Forget the Amiga.
you're right
You really love genesis, if you think that Genesis has best music. Who doesn´t love Genesis? But your love is blind. You should be honest.
For this game, Genesis music is WAY better. Listen to SNES version, sounds horrible
You´re right, Genesis music is beter than SNES, but you forgot Amiga version, Amiga has best music, SNES has best graphics, Genesis has worse graphics, but better music than SNES.
I try to be objective.
Tomáš Konvička Genesis version delivers better colors and resolution. SNES version is the worst
Sagan does with Nintendont
Super Nintendo and the mega drive version is amazing
Amiga? PC version

Man, the Amiga really wasn't cut out to handle this, was it? 1989-1990 vs. unmodified 1985 hardware...
This game was for the Amiga-1200 with the newer AGA chipset and a 14MHz CPU, so it's 1992 hardware. The original 1985 Amiga wasn't indeed cut out to handle this.
frschmidlin That's... even sadder, to be honest.
In this case, It´s about people and honest work, than about harware.
But beside CPU and colors does the AGA chipset improves anything else which would make noticeable differences for gaming? Does it improve the scrolling capabilities? The sprites capabilities? The sound? If not, this would explain why it still cannot compete with the Mega Drive or SNES. It seems that even the CD32 which was supposed to be a full fifth generation console still had to deal with the limitations of the AGA hence why most of its games were barely impressive compared to its competitors the 3DO, the Saturn or the Playstation.
This is just sloppy programming there are alot of Amiga games that look better than this. TBH if lion king was AGA they must have really messed up because this doesn't look better than what a A500 can do.
Megadrive has better tools for making sunny beaches.
i prefer the genesis resolution for game play, these games are not that easy to pass i sweated for over a week trying to pass the levels hard as balls!

Actually snes is the worst due smaller resolution ,on running, jumping stage was imposible to pass as you wore seeing things to late (also imposible to learn as the obstacles came randomly ) I never been able to complete the snes version.
I never had that problem. Must be your skills
@@retropolis1 you can see clearly in this video how smaller than the snes screen is
@@POcho820 So what. It never caused any problems. You must be a bad player.
@@retropolis1 Clearly you must be very smart. So smart that can't read properly.
@@POcho820 you don't need to be smart in order to play a game like this. However, not being a Sega fanboy helps a lot.
amiga wins hi res
Overview of each versions:
- Amiga (btw it's an Amiga 1200 only game): proper resolution of 320x256 pixels albeit with a black border all around the screen (not totally noticeable here). Good graphics and scrollings. There are some performance issues (frame rate isn't optimal). Good audio but the sound is hard-panned (due to Amiga's limited amount of sound channels). Many levels are missing (due to storage constraints). The stages' name doesn't display when they start. Some visual effects are missing such as the flames @"Pride Rock" 35:57.
- Mega Drive: proper resolution of 320x224 pixels without black border. Good graphics and excellent scrollings. Very good music, clear and warm with some lovely drums but some sound FX could have been better. I barely played this game but apparently this is the version that plays the best which is often the case when the Mega Drive is involved in these comparisons.
- Super NES: flawed resolution of 256x224 pixels which causes limited screen estate (20% smaller than other versions) and stretched graphics with wrong aspect ratio once displayed in 4:3. Higher color depth than other versions but I prefer some color choices on Mega Drive such as the rock @title screen (1:19) or the water here: 19:41. Lacks some parallax scrollings as well as the line-scrolling effect on the water @"I Can't Wait To Be King" 5:40. Has a nice screen-shaking effect @"The Stampede" when the buffaloes are jumping over and which is lacking in the other versions. Some of the music are quite good but the overall quality is muffled and lacks punch.
Also it's important to keep in mind that the slight color advantage on Super NES compared to the other versions is lessened once these systems are displayed on CRT screen - as intended - thanx to the scanlines and slight blur, all of which smoothes out the visuals.
So, based on the video and the few that I played this game, here is how these three versions would rank: Mega Drive > Super NES > Amiga (but Amiga would have been 2nd best if it had all the levels)
Another very well done video silenig. Thank you mate.
genesis wins best use of color and music. it suffers from some cheap sounding sound effects. like falling rocks or lightning bolts
Mega Drive version, simply because it's the only one that DOESN'T have slowdown. The reduced colour depth is made up for in parallax scrolling and a constant frame rate.
Když sem byla malá koukala jsem jenom na videa téhle hry teďka ji hraji na androidu,,mám verzi od Segy
SNES uses the voices better un the soundtrack...
I must see and hear something no one else is, because I think SNES wins not Amiga or Mega Drive/Genesis! And I am no fan boy I am basing it soley on what I am seeing and hearing! But that is me and that is my opinion!
For me the Amiga version seemed to sound better than the other two. The characters looked more crisp and detailed, and the animation was better in spots. The SNES looked really good, was missing some parallax, but had a nicer color palette in some parts. MD is a fine game, but from a technical standpoint is just not quite in the same league
@@RaysBonuses Also the Amiga version wasn't complete and was done in a rush, with more time the Amiga version could have been the best, more so as it was a A1200 version.

Amiga Colors looks more realistic then Genesis and Snes.
Megadrive ist Colorful and Snes have more Brightness
Snes version is basically the best however that soft audio on the snes side of things is always hard to swallow since so few companies knew how to take proper advantage. Not to say the genesis one is magical music to my ears but at times that more defined chip sounds works better like in stage 2.
Amiga version for as dated as that hardware is pulled its own weight and did an admirable job.
It was released only for Amiga models with AGA which were introduced in 1992 so after MD and SNES ;)
The Mega Drive stampede music feels so........... Empty.

Snes best
The SNES is better than the Genisis graphically and mostly in sound
The Amiga (which chipset, you need to mention that in any amiga vs (everything else of the day) comparison) is somewhere between them
The snes resolution is cropped
@@StaticTV80, I hadn't noticed, thanks for telling me...
Amiga AGA only. Both Amiga 1200/4000 and SNES are released in 1992 for the European market.
The A1200 well programmed and used can do SNES like games or better. and it can use 256 colors or 128 ingame, while the SNES is stuck on 99% of games on 128 colors max. 256 colors are mostly used on fixed screens.
SNES Better
Many Controls, Good Graphics & Faster Credits
The Megadrive could not do the sampled intro due to its sound chip limitations.. Whereas the Amiga and Snes could.
+JAMIE LESTER
It *could* have albeit at a lower quality sample, check out Toy Story to ear what I mean. The Mega Drive/Genesis version of Lion King is already one of the best if not the single best with its proper resolution + smooth frame rate etc. but if they had used the Toy Story technique for the title screen music (while the in-game tunes don't need any change) + improved a bit the colors use, this version would have simply destroyed the others.
+JAMIE LESTER
Amiga and SNES samples-based sound chips might be handy but they aren't without their flaws in addition to be kinda soulless compared to the Mega Drive which has a distinctive sound signature with its FM + PSG sound chips which act like real instruments not to mention the Mega Drive also has a DAC to play samples if required. Talking about this, you can check Sonic the Next Level for a Mega Drive game with *in-game* sampled music.
Megadrive can sample but cart size and lack of hardware interup made samples much harder to do well compared to the other 2. Its not a DSP so uses the Z80 to run software drivers. The progamming of the drivers make a big difference. The Z80 is bit slow, would have been nice if they doubled its speed and just halved it when in MS mode.. The Amiga can do amazing music using samples but can run into trouble with only 4 channels , 2 if stereo. Sound effects often cut out instruments on amiga games. If the amiga is allowed to allocate all its cpu time to music its the best sounding here, obviously thats not possible during a game though. Title screens can be very nice though.
snes
As a Snes fan I like the Genesis version better. The limited color palette and higher contrast look better than SNES. The controls seemed more precise.
Sega genesis rules in better and smoothest animation.. this is why sonic hedgehog fastest character can be smoothly played on sega genesis.
