    The point of this video (and other similar videos) isn't "which is better" but instead how the different versions compare to each other - the details.
    This was edited because I thought that two different longplays of the same game, running side-by-side would be kind of fun.
    This was my first side-by-side video, a slightly improved version is uploaded here: • The Lion King | Mega D...

    The Genesis version is the "source" version. Also, the SNES version has some serious hitbox bugs. Also the art conversion has some bugs, and the vertical dithering is still present in the SNES version in some parts(but of course is not needed, because of the wider palette of SNES).

    There's definitely some real advantages to the MD version here! Here's what I think...
    *SNES advantages:*
    - Higher resolution.
    - Slightly higher colour palette.
    - Maybe very slightly smoother?
    *MD advantages:*
    - More energetic & louder music.
    - Slightly better voice synthesis and SFX.
    - Better font.
    - Better controls.

      +R33Racer the resolution is higher on the sega megadrive (320x224) than the snes (256x224) in most games, except in some fighting games like street fighter 2 because the megadrive also has the same 256x224 mode, so the sf2 games despite the colours can have the same graphics.

  • @retroinspect

    A big problem for the SNES is the limited resolution that led to things looking really up close. This also resulted in the camera jumping back and forth which gets nauseating while the Genesis version keeps Simba almost directly in the center of the screen.
    SNES games had better graphics and sound but there was a trade off. Thankfully The Lion King isn't a technically difficult game because SNES action games also suffered from a lot of slowdown because of its slow processor.

    • @jordanscherr6699
      @jordanscherr6699 Год назад +1

      The Megadrive did indeed have a faster processor. R-Type Delta is an excellent example of where that often presented a problem. Ironicly, there's a mod theses days that speeds it up using a code tweak to use the Graphics FX Chip. Pretty cool to play it with such a boost, if mind-numbingly difficult.

    • @Robobvious2
      @Robobvious2 Год назад +3

      I think in this case the Genesis audio is way better. With the scanlines on a CRT making up for any shortcomings in the graphics department anyways I think it means the Genesis is definitely the way to go for this one. Though you really have to make that choice on a case by case basis, because that won't hold true for every game released on both systems.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN Год назад +2

      Super NES version is still the better game. These are just emulator footage, on actual 4:3 TV they look very much identical and plays smoother than this. Reason why I know it's emulator footage was that on actual console Super NES won't be able to use its native 8:7 aspect like in this footage. Here Genesis was in 4:3 but Super NES is in 8:7 which makes for inconsistent comparison.

    • @retroinspect

    I'm not surprised with how well the quality of the Genesis audio holds up to the SNES here. Especially with the percussion and drums. Matt Furniss was KING of programming for the Genesis FM sound chip, one of the few other than Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage). In fact, I much prefer the musicality of the FM chip over the sample based approach in this situation.

    • @jordanscherr6699
      @jordanscherr6699 Год назад

      It's fairly even, but I think the SNES gets closer to the film's intended aesthetic. With some tracks I could see how the muffled nature of the samples holds them back a bit. Others aren't elaborated on to the full extent the SNES can deliver. But like I mention in my own comment, it's situations like Pride rock where it's clear the SNES came first, and Genesis is a port. The graphics speak to this too. It's not a bad port, just clearly one.

  • @RellikInProfile
    @RellikInProfile 6 лет назад +12

    Graphically: It comes down to a few factors: The SNES has a larger pallet to display from which means it doesn't need to rely so much on dithering like the MD version does, but also means the colours blend better instead of the MD having higher contrast colours. Really it's a personal preference thing on that front.
    Now sound is where it gets interesting: The SNES should prove superior, but seems to suffer from much lower quality sampling so although there are more instruments to work with in the midi, it sounds muddy and unclear. Where as the MD version has less instruments to work with, giving a more bouncier more stripped back quality to the songs themselves but in the process sounds a lot sharper and clearer.
    As for actual gameplay I couldn't notice any real differences in animation or frame rate on this video, maybe having both games in front of me on CRT's would be different.

    • @digimaks
      @digimaks 2 года назад

      Snes does NOT have any larger pallet. It's just the fact that person who recordefd it had difference on emulators that he/she didn't take into account.

  • @SDollz
    @SDollz 10 лет назад +26

    This is pretty neat. I played both versions in my childhood. Since no one in the comments mentioned this here I go: The (edit:) resolution is infinitely better on the Genesis version. You can see more in front and behind you, giving more time to react (5:29 glaring example). The dark (Sega) and light (SNES) filter is preference; SNES has better audio quality although it can be preference as well. Regardless, I think resolution is the deal breaker though- so I would go with Genesis version.

  • @JRPG_gymrat
    @JRPG_gymrat 10 лет назад +16

    Maybe I'm biased because I had a Genesis growing up, but I always thought the Genesis sounded better. I now know that the SNES's technology was much more advanced (sampling as opposed to FM), but despite that, the sound on the SNES always just sounded thinner and murkier to me and still does. The SNES definitely looks better to me, though, as it's much more colorful and whatnot, although at least the Genesis did have that bit of extra screen visibility that someone else mentioned here and better processing power. I dunno, they're both good. Neither did everything right, but the technology in the SNES was in fact more forward-thinking, even if it hadn't been perfected yet.

      Nick Evans the difference in color is incredibly marginal. Both machines are limited to less than 4-bit color in game, 16 colors per pallete and pallette restrictions per graphics layer. This is why games are virtually the same in terms of amount of colors, people reading spec sheets with no idea how it works in game.
      512 colors is fine PCEngine has the same master pallete, when you understand 16-bit graphics it’s not bad at all.

    Piece of jewel!!!!
    My first choice would be the Sega Genesis version.
    Those of us who know programming know and are very clear about the following:
    1) the genesis had twice the processing power capacity of the snes.
    It is very fast and never slows down.
    It makes the game much smoother and more enjoyable to play
    2) the famous mode 7 of the snes and the 3d rotations, the genesis could do them without the need for special chips for that, and that is clearly demonstrated in many games of the time.
    3) By the processor could achieve much more moving wallpapers and Sprites on screen etc...
    4) as everyone mistakenly believes, the genesis did not have a simultaneous color limitation and its available color palette was not 512, in fact that was the base and more colors came out of it, reaching almost 2,000 available colors, and about 200 simultaneously colors in moving images.
    5) the famous transparencies of the snes genesis could be achieved without any problem with the light and shadow technique and had two other techniques to achieve it, dithering and by frames.
    6) the sound of the genesis is much clearer because it does not use samples, but instead generates the audio itself with an internal instrument it has, and generates it in real time and could also play samples such as voices in a completely clear way, being able to achieve not only one but three channels of samples for it sounding at the same time.
    The quality depended on the quality of the sample that was introduced, that it was more or less compressed.
    But it did not depend on the machine.
    7) While the snes only worked with samples and for that reason they were totally compressed samples and they sounded very bad, to save space.
    That's why most games sound very muddy and sound like they're inside a box or behind a wall.
    To understand it better, it was as if it had an internally compressed MP3 player, but it did not generate its own sound as the Sega Genesis did.
    I only know of very few games that have good sound.
    The only positive thing that the snes has in terms of sound is that it had a special internal system to achieve reverb and delay, so they could achieve a little more depth in the sound.
    Although the genesis also had techniques to achieve it but it was more complicated, that's why the sound of the genesis sounds drier to us, but that is easily solved by taking the audio from the genesis to a reproduction equipment and adding that delay or reverb effect of external way and problem solved.
    8) the aesthetic appearance of the Sega genesis is incredible, classic and elegant while the aesthetic appearance of the snes is actually horrible, it looks like a cart, only the wheels are missing.
    9) a higher screen resolution, the snes is seen with less resolution and more blurry, not sharp
    10) the only advantage of the snes over the sega genesis is that it is much easier to program for it and many things could be achieved more easily.
    That is why I see the Sega genesis as an exclusive console dedicated to only experienced programmers, the quality depended on the programmers and not on the machine, the snes is one more console of the trade, but even so the genesis broke the face of the snes in European territory by far.
    That's why I say that the snes would be my second option, and I'm not detracting from the fact that it also has incredible games.
    All the best

      @@WeirdBrick In terms of visuals and sound I totally agree. It's the best looking and sounding version, full stop. However, the gameplay in the Snes version is terrible. The collision detection for swinging and grabbing edges is more wonky. The animal tower has no collision detection at all, so crossing the river via tail swinging is a gamble. And the cropped screen isn't helping either. The worst thing is definitely the poor collision detection. The game is brutal enough as it is, these issues make it needlessly frustrating. • @millgiass
    @millgiass 7 лет назад +4

    I've got a lot to say about this. I can see both versions have their strong points.
    *Music*: I think the overall sound of the Genesis music sounds a bit more pumped and exciting. It's very appealing. The SNES one is a bit too slow and laid back sounding and their main instrument choices sound bad which really drags the music down horribly. However, I must say that the QUALITY of the music is better on the SNES thanks to its layering of different instruments. The only problem is the main line of the music isn't good enough to bring that over the Genesis.
    *Visuals*: I have to break this down into several categories because there are instances that could be cited of both out performing the other.
    Color: This one is a bit mixed let's start out with the SNES. We all know that there is a higher range of color in the SNES than the Sega Genesis. It can make coloration seem more precise and smooth, but it comes at a cost. Over all it makes everything look dull and bland. The SNES version of the game looks pretty bad in-game despite the fact that there is greater detail. It is as if someone took a layer of see through white and just plastered it all over everything. Like there is a piece of tracing paper over top of it. Over all, it gives everything a really soft and fuzzy appearance that doesn't look good at all. The Genesis version, on the other hand, has really bombastic color choices that contrast greatly and give it a really sharp look. This makes objects stand out from each other better and makes it more engaging to look at. -Sega Wins this category
    Cutscene presentation: There's no comparison here. The Sega version has a very 'spotty' look to it. Like stibbling. This makes it look like an old timey news paper comic. It's passable but it's clear that the graphical superiority of the SNES shines through in the still image cut-scenes. The color is richer, there's a higher pixel count. The Genesis didn't stand a chance. -SNES wins this category.
    In Motion visuals: When in-game and in motion, the look of the Sega version seems to be better. Thanks to the problem with the SNES' pallet over all everything seems blurry in game. This can produce a nauseating effect if you stare at it for too long. -Sega takes this
    *2-1 Sega takes visuals too*
    *Voices*: While it's close I think that the SNES voice samples (and the more abundance of voice samples) make this an easy win for SNES. The clarity is just better and they integrated some voice samples into the music making it seem more authentic.
    SEGA wins in my eyes. While there is some good about the SNES there's really no contest here. Sega wins 4-2

    Both have some good tunes and sound effects.
    I like the higher contrast of the Genesis better.
    I like to color pallet better on SNES.
    Audio samples sound crisper on Genesis.
    Audio samples have better bass on SNES.
    Genesis has slightly higher resolution.
    Cut scene animations and intermissions look much better on SNES.
    More backgrounds have parallax scrolling on Genesis (Developer fault, SNES is more than capable).
    Backgrounds *look* nicer on SNES.
    Conclusion: Inconclusive. It's a matter of preference. Personally, I MUCH prefer the SNES controller, and the artist in me finds it more visually appealing.
    Note: Before you call me a fanboy, I will say that ALADDIN is definitely better on Genesis.

Bad Bosses, Bad Minigames, not-so-crisp level design and controls, unrewarding endings, dull backgrounds, unbalanced difficulty, more stages that were not in the movie, reusing the same A Whole New World version used in the title screen, flawed level select, cutscenes that have very little animation, cutscenes that do not tell the story well, and some lame typefaces and fonts.

    I played and reviewed both of them several years ago. The SNES version is better by far. First of all, is not a matter of contrast; the Genesis palette has less colours, so the Genesis puts gradients of black instead of brown (look at the rocks) green (look at the foliage), etc... look at the backgrounds, SNES version shows mountains in alpha blending where the Genesis uses stripes to give the feeling of transparency. The audio on SNES also has pre-recorded voices.

    Both versions actually look and run great. Even better if you play on a TV from that era (or have a really nice scanline filter). The wider view of the playfield (due to higher resolution) probably tips this in favor of the Genesis. They also did a great job with the audio on the Genesis version, this was a very good conversion where they took the time (and cart space) to do the Genesis port justice. I can't say that about every port... some devs did a quick dirty Genesis release and the result is pathetic.

Higher resolution than SNES (320x224 pixels vs 256x224) providing wider visible area, proper aspect ratio (while on SNES everything is deformed as usual) and sharper picture quality. From 4:16 it's TOTAL POWNAGE, the Mega Drive is like next gen compared to SNES: in addition to the higher resolution here you also have more layers of parallax + a line scrolling effect on the water that gives an even deeper perspective. And dat Mega Drive music!!!

      +retroking1981 Two reasons: First, the SNES CPU is too slow for handling complex games in that resolution. Second, it supports 512x448 but can only display 16 colors in that mode instead of 256.
      Don't be fooled by those specs alone, it's how the whole system works that counts. None of the consoles is truly superior to the other from a technical standpoint.

      +Kob's Channel You say you're "objective" but, of course, you don't mention Genesis's higher resolution (which is a HUGE advantage), added parallax or better scrolling effects as mentioned in the first post here. SNES has more on-screen colors but that's it, and Genesis graphics look really good so it's not like if it's an issue. btw I know retro sanctuary, some cool comparisons there but also some questionable ones, but when it comes to Lion King anyway, IMO, it's purely subjective in the end.

    • @KobayashiBR
      @KobayashiBR 8 лет назад +1

      I said earlier that I have good knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of both systems, and, of course, I know about this question of better resolution on the Genesis and I took this into consideration implicitly in my evaluation, as well as other aspects. However, to me, these characteristics even with relative importance aren't sufficient and decisive to determine the best version of a multiplatform game, such as the game in question here: "The Lion King." As I said in my first post here, "The Lion King" runs on a similiar way on both systems, but what really unbalances this dispute is the sound question, that for this game in particular, is much better in the SNES than Genesis and also the question of best color palette. If you look, for example, closely and carefully the green branches in the photos for the first stage of this game shown in the comparison made by "Retro-Sanctuary" website, you'll find out beyond any doubt an immense downgrade for the Genesis version in this specific part. So, for my evaluative sense and also justice sense, the conclusion that "Retro-Sanctuary" arrived is correct and "The Lion King" is really better on SNES. Unfortunately, this type of comparative attracts many fanboys from Sega and Nintendo, but I can guarantee to you that is not my case, because I own and love both systems and if you check the videos on my channel you'll see that I own many games from Sega, Nintendo and many other companies. It is. Have a great day!

      That's because the Mega Drive (MD did it more often) and SNES used dithering which where 2 colour pixel patterns that when projected on a RF or Composite signal, simulated more colours. This was necessary because the MD could display up to 64 colours from a palette of 512 colours at once, the SNES could do 256 colours from a palette of 32,768 colours.

    I never payed either of these in fact I just started playing the SNES ROM for the first time a few days ago.
    The title screen it is obviously apparent that the SNES version looks better, however, in game the SNES is just brighter, it fools the viewer much in the same way the brightest TV in a display room gets the buyers attention but brightness alone doesnt determine picture quality, the single most important driver of picture quality is the contrast between dark and light.
    The Genesis version clearly wins as the contrasts between dark and light and dfferent colored textures is much more clearly defined whereas the SNES version looks much more blurry with the lighting uniform across all environments for the most part.

    They did a great job making the same game on 2 vastly different consoles and having it play the same on both. The Genesis one could look better than it does, they just decreased the colors of the SNES graphics and didn't bother cleaning it up. The clouds above pride rock in the scene with Mufasa and Simba is a good example of this. Otherwise, most people will agree that the SNES just has a nicer sound chip. It's unfortunate that when it came to creating the same game on both consoles, Sega always got the short end of the stick despite having much more processing power. It would have been more work to create a game that allowed each console to play at their own advantage (speed vs. graphics), though there are a few cases where developers did take the extra time to do this (Aladdin, Street Fighter 2, etc.). Genesis does what Ninten'don't, and Nintendo is what Genes'isn't.

    I think the SNES version is a bit harder at a few points, just because of a few tiny differences in the moments. Over-all, I like them both. I play the SNES version when on my PC and when I feel like playing on a console I play the Sega version. Even if and when I one day get my hands on a SNES console.

    Genesis Better Colors, SFX, OST, Resolution VS SNES Better Graphics... Genesis WINS

    • @rcle7022
      @rcle7022 6 лет назад +17

      The Genesis has "better colors" but the SNES has "better graphics"? The reason the SNES looks better is because of the better colors. Look at 1:41 for instance. The Genesis version has visible graininess on the background layer, the tree has visible lines where it's obviously trying to represent a color that isn't in the palette, and you can't see the leaves on the bushes because the colors are poorly defined. Colors are actually the only advantage the SNES has in most cases.

    • @CorralSummer
      @CorralSummer 6 лет назад +5

      The reason Genesis colors look better despite having less of them is all because of the contrast.
      Yes, the snes has more colors, but they all feel just a tad to washed out.
      More isn't always better and I think this is a good example of that, the extra contrast on the Genesis really makse everything pop in a way that the snes just doesn't.

      I have to agree that Sega wins this one. The SNES really does look washed out and faded. The Mega Drive's higher resolution means that there's a much larger playfield 3:21 Also, the SNES sounds flat and muffled due to it's gaussian filter which can't be turned off. Compare at 2:20.

    The best version is the genesis.the music sounds a lot more energetic on sega,for snes its low quality music.the graphics look a lot more colorfull on sega with with a bigger contrast between colors,unlike snes where it looks blury.The game may have the best speech i ever heard in a 16 bit game(the gen version):every thing the light touches is our kingdom.

    • @MegaJessness
      @MegaJessness 9 лет назад +16

      Ciprian Mogosanu Actually, except for the contrast, the SNES tends to have better graphics. More colors for the system makes gradients smoother, and it's very noticable between the two versions here. I agree about the music, tho, the Genesis version's music is much better. The speech is around the same, though the SNES version is slightly clearer. I like how with this comparison there's no clear winner here, it's all purely a matter of preference. This game is a good example, as they made the two versions as similar as possible within the hardware limitations.

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 8 лет назад +7

      +Ciprian Mogosanu I have to disagree on the music. It may sound more "energetic" because it's FM synthesis, not PCM samples like the SNES. FM Synthesis often doesn't correctly capture the proper sound of the instruments, resulting in a different character to the notes.
      Also, if these were recorded from emulator play, the sound emulation on certain SNES emulators is far from perfect, and certain "enhancements" actually detract from the overall quality.
      One last note, there are more sound events on the SNES version because it can play more voices at a time, making the world a bit more interesting sound-wise. The voices on the SNES version are also closer to those from the movies. Mufasa doesn't even sound like James Earl Jones in the Genesis version, but the SNES version you can clearly tell it's him.

      This shit again, lol.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 9 лет назад +1

      Marcel Weber Errm, it did. The SNES's S-SMP, (designed by Ken Kutaragi at Sony, who later went on to be the father of the PlayStation) had a DSP capable of mixing 8 sampled channels, while the Genesis had to rely on a 6-channel FM synth and a programmable sound generator that could create sound effects, but couldn't play actual sound samples. The FM synthesizer (in the Genesis) has a trick where you could feed data directly through one of the sound channels to get PCM playback, but only on the one channel, and only with careful (and rather processor intensive) manual handling. That's why you see it being used to occasionally play back voice samples, but it's almost never used in music (also no DSP to pitch shift) or for sound effects.
      The SNES approach was much more flexible, and generally higher quality, but music that is designed specifically for FM synth can take great advantage of the hardware and produce some pretty amazing stuff. The Genesis also had the advantage that the 6-channel FM synthesis was dedicated to music (when not using one channel for PCM), while the SNES just had the 8 channels that had to be shared by both music and sound effects. You could certainly create more varied soundtracks with the SNES, though FM synth can sound cleaner if you work within it's restrictions.
      It's also worth noting that the SNES had the advantage of having come out two years later than the Genesis.

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 9 лет назад +6

      Adam Zey
      So you are basically saying the SNES soundchip is superior because "it plays samples"? that's kinda lame, because highly compressed samples aren't necessarily better than FM synth music. Also, the PCM channel from the genesis was used in many games, what are you talking about?
      With good programming the single PCM channel from the genesis, can be divided into 4 PCM channels at 14Khz playback, so you could have: 5 FM + 4 PSG (Master System) + 4 PCM at 14Khz: a total of 13 channels.
      And yes SNES came out later, yet it still had a poor processor compared to the genesis.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 9 лет назад

      Marcel Weber A sampled music synthesizer certainly has a lot more potential, although it's still possible to produce terrible results with it... FM synthesis can produce some decent output, but it's still a rather poor approximation of real instruments in most cases. This game is not a terribly good representation of what can be accomplished.
      I suppose which style of music you prefer is largely up taste, but Genesis games tend to rely on the PSG for sound effects, which has always sounded rather silly compared to actual sampled effects. That's not on the subject of music, of course.

    While the SNES version is graphically better but the sounds and music are overall better on the Mega Drive, I mean if you've noticed young Simba's roar is different between both versions, for some stupid reason in the SNES version young Simba sounds like a cat while in the Mega Drive version he makes a proper young lion roar which is the roar sound he's supposed to make. So for me the Mega Drive version is hands down the better version, graphics don't mean everything.
