Thank you for this video. I'm just getting into droning and didn't want to buy all new equipment, so I'm using my RC airplane radio equipment from around 2009 I dug out. This video saved me a couple hundred dollars on a new setup.
I bought a couple of Kopilot Lites after seeing this video tried to set up using my 7yo DX7S Spektrum radio & DSM2 receiver without SBus on a new AXN. Took me a couple of hours, but I finally worked it out. Used your tip of connecting to PWM & moving the pins around but didn’t work at first. I had to set up wing type to 1xAileron & 1xFlap in order to be able to use the 3 position Flap switch (the only 3 position switch on my radio). I plugged 3pin lead from PWM slot into Gear slot on the receiver but had to swap over the Gear switch to Flaps in the Switches menu. Had to reverse both Ailerons & Throttle. Everything all of a sudden just worked! Very exciting. One thing I did notice that the leads on the 4pin plug on my Kopilot Lite were different, on one had to switch pins 3&4 around on the PWM plug to switch Throttle& Rudder around. 🤔. Weird? Never mind ..... it worked! Thanks for your informative video. I’ve ordered a Radiomaster TX16s, to use with a F765 flight controller. Thanks for the video! Moving the four PWM wires for throttle, elevator, aileron, and rudder finally got my Kopilot working. I sure wish ZOHD made things clearer. Anyways, you saved the day! Thanks again!
I'm waiting for all my components to arrive, AR wing Pro and ZOHD Kopilot. This video has really assured that I made the right purchase and confidence to put it all together. Thank you!!!!!!!
I am running the Kopilot Lite with a Spektrum AR620 Rx in my FMS Fox3000 motorglider. It took me a few tries to get it all adjusted properly, but now that it's working right, I absolutely love it!! By using the Fence Mode, it makes hand-launching very easy. I no longer need a launching trolley! And the stability in flight makes it an absolute joy to fly. I'm definitely going to install it in other planes now that I've got it figured out.
Ah, thanks for elucidating the trick of rearranging the wires. I spent two evenings tearing my hair out trying to work out why it wouldn’t work. Many thanks. 👍🍻

Hi Lee, thank you so much for this, I was struggling with this exact problem and your solution (swapping wire order in the socket) was so simple, cheers.
Thanks for your insights and setup for Spektrum. So my DX 6i only has 2 way switches but I found a video by tomtom4867 and he was able to get a workaround for a 3 way switch for flaps. I found that I could do this so I could have the stabilizer, manual and RTH function. Otherwise I was looking at only having stabilizer and RTH. I was ready to scrap it! So bad, I did the swap and "almost fixed it", I had to do the calibrations, as the movements were very small. Now good! thanks. All other instructions use bloody Sbus, with no consideration for PWM and Spektrum channel order on receivers.
I'd already done all this but still couldn't get it to work. I think Kopilot doesn't see the mode signal for some reason. Middle position for stabilisation mode and none of the control surfaces move and ESC doesn't arm. Very frustrating. Will try on SBUS. Thanks for the video though.
Hi Essential RC. I have got the same problem. No contact between receiver and the Kopilot unit. My receiver is labeled pcms/ppm and it has no sbus connection. I have tried to connect it via the pwm socket but without succes. Have you solved the problem? /Greetings Jan from Sweden

I've been trying to connect a Flysky FS-X6B receiver to my Kopilot Lite using the PWM connector. The Kopilot plug has a 3 pin socket (Red, Black & White) and a 4 pin socket (White & Blackx3). The receiver PWM plug has a 3 pin socket (Red, Black & White) and 6 x 3 pin sockets where only one wire (signal) is used. I've made up an connector that connects the two 3 pin sockets and connects the 4 pin Kopilot PWM socket (White to ailerons, black to elevator
What about Taranis vs Spektrum pulse width for calibrations? 100% on Taranis equals 125% on Spektrum. Will this affect calibration if not adjusted? Without the proper %, resolution would be lost. e.g. If set at 100% it would only give 80% of possible sevo throws for spektrum if the KOPILOT is expecting taranis inputs. Best solution would be for KOPILOT to have a transmitter type to remap pin order and PW limits.
Hi, great video's. Do you think this unit would work with an RC boat just using the throttle & rudder as this is all an RC boat needs. This would be very handy if the boat got out of range with a return to home facility.
Will you be doing one using the crossfire (nano rx) at all? I had a mare trying to set it up using sbus. In the end I needed to use an old flysky with pwm. Taking kopot out in my new nano talon evo today. My 1st adventure into fixed wing! Arrrr
@@Painless360 I thought it would be so, but having not used something like this before it wasnt working. Look forward to your video. I really should join your patrion to buy you some beers!!
Great video and very helpful. I have one question. I have spektrum recievers that have a plug on them that says XBUS is that the same as SBUS? Thank you.
No it is not. It is a shame that Soektrum didn't provide pilots with connection options widely used in the hobby. Many pilots are moving from Spektrum to RadioMaster and Frsky when they want to explore the wider, modern hobby. Best of luck
Can any one HELP Please I am trying to setup a Spektrum DX6 radio to Kopilot Lite and having the following problem in manual mode. I get intermittent operation, e.g. servo does not move, servo moves but stays in that position for a few seconds then returns to the neutral point or does not move at all, the throttle response is the same working intermittently or not at all when it does work the motor continues running this may take 2 or 3 seconds or more. If plane connected to receiver without kopilot lite everything works as per normal. Tried ZOHD help desk and they only directed me to this video which I had already seen.
I'm just getting into the RC plane aspect offline have done the drone thing for many years but this is unfamiliar territory I have the. Copilot in the nano talon evo. I fly spectrum obviously the receivers have changed do they make any of the newer receivers with s bus or what do you recommend for a spectrum receiver for the copilot
Spektrum don't seem to want to support their customers using other hardware so don't provide a lot of support for well established industry protocols like SBUS. If the wider world of modern RC is of interest then I wouldn't use Spektrum. Best of luck
I was curious if it is possible to set this up on a two position switch such as "gear" or if it needs a dedicated three position switch for unstabilized/stabilized/rth? Thanks!
You'll lose one of the three modes using a two position switch unless you can do some mixing with another control on the radio to give you the three positions you need... best of luck
Hi, I'm trying to do this but with a Matek R24 pwm Rx. The pins aren't labeled throttle, rudder, etc, just numbered. How would I know which spots to put the pins in for the pwm connector?
It bloomin' worked!!! I can't believe it, and the auto-launch is awesome!! However.... I fly on the side of a vale with the wind coming uphill. So, on RTH the aeroplane gets blown towards the trees on the slope behind me. Fortunately, I've got away with it thus far, but I'm wondering what is the next step up, i.e. a f/c that I could programme to climb faster and circle tighter? Many thanks for your help. First time doing an auto-launch is a mad experience!
I am a huge fan of Autolaunch and use it all the time here. No more nose in crashes from a bad throw. Check out INAV for the next step... Happy flying!
Hi Lee, i've tried to find the Orange R710 receiver without any luck! I have a Spectrum dxeA transmitter that came with my Apprentice s 15e, and was hoping to use this with the Zohd Drift with Kopilot...could you recommend a currently available (in the UK!) receiver that would work? Many thanks
Any reciever that works with your Seoktrum radio that had an SBUS out would be great. I don't use Spektrum here so am not up to speed with current DSM stuff... Best of luck
Can you set up kopilot lite to work with a Spectrum Dx6i transmitter that only has a 2 pos switch for modes do you know if you can run the RTH/launch on that and have the second pos be manual no stabilization? Thank you!
Painless360 yes thank you I now have all PWM leads in the correct 4 pin locations and plugged in the receiver. Where do I plug the throttle connector that comes from the ESC does it plug into the KOPILOT under Throttle. Sorry to be a nuisance ray
Hi Again. I got mine all setup but when i go to RTH my surfaces twitch real bad even with satellite connected. What am i doing wrong. Also this is on a wing. Thanks again.
Hi could you try contacting the kopilot to a spectrum ar620 as I've tried for months with no success and maybe make a video of how you did it as cant find any help thanks
HI Lee thanks for sharing your knowledge to set fail safe in pwm with a spektum tx do i have to bind the rx with the mode switch set to rth and the throttle stick at half position thanks
Hi Lee, I have read all your comments, but i cant get the esc to arm even when i have the GPS light on i dont have a s bus and all other systems work. any ideas?
@@Painless360 Nope. No GPS lock required (or even installed!) - just set channel 5 Mode Switch to Manual (0%) and ESC will arm. If installed the ESC won't arm in the Stabilized or RTH modes before GPS lock is obtained. If it won't arm in Manual Mode then almost certainly the problem here is using an ESC that is incompatible with the long boot-up time of the Kopilot.
Lee, Thank you for the informative video. Would it be possible for you to see if the ZoHD Kopilot would work with the ImmersionRC Atto Receiver ? I tested with Radiomaster, FlySky receivers and they all work great. I can't get it working with the Atto Receiver. Let me know what you think.
Hi Lee! Million thanks for this video again😎👍🏾. Today ive just done two flights( a full maiden actually- TX16S,R88 wired as sbus, Kopilot,Bixler3), but im get upset.. 1- rssi not good, during takeoff only get around 67db. While flying around 90ft tx16s says 'rssi low' @ 52db.. the furthest ive tried is around 120ft and tx16 says 'rssi critical' and at 39db..almost lost signal. Have tried both D8 and D16 protocol on the Frsky modulation.also same.R88 rx dual antenna angled at 90deg or 180deg also same, rssi not strong and not full up to 100%. 2- 1st flight done. Manual & Balance mode is fine,if switched to RTH mode the Bixler just circling above me at 50ft+-, it wont self land to runway(as i set during power up the plane on the middle of the field).. i did adjust the Rth/Rad Pot clockwise till it stop.as illustrated in zohd manual. 3- second flight. Tried change rf protocol to Frsky,D16 8Ch.and tried both style angled antenna( 90° & 180°), still didnt get full rssi to 100 during sit on runway.just got under 77db.. Managed to fly around 100ft radius only, during last landing ive stalled the bixler and it just dive stall from 20ft height..no way to survive it😅..loll Conclusion: what is not right about it? Did i missed setup something on Tx16s that i just bought new? Kopilot unit- RTH function didnt land the plane, is it just thats all? The day before, i did try out other setups: elrs mode. Jumper Aion mini tx module & Jumper Aion mini 2.4 Rx(pwm).. only ch a.e.t.r did work, but ch5 for use the flight mode is not work..anyway i did not have access to see the Aion mini Rx pwm signal graph,as my laptop is not compatible to download the Expresslrs Configurator(mine is Windows8, popup blocked says didnt have 64-bit to run it)🤦🏻♂️ Or should i try my other ORX receivers tats laying around? Got a Orx R610Lite v2, a Orx NanoRx ppm rx, a JR R721 and a R921 rx sets.. Btw/: i will be need to have at least 7or8 useable channels to run also an fpv pantilt 2servo gimbal. Will someone please help me out...?😭 Ill be really appreciate your help.
If RSSI isn't great then check the antenna alignment. If that is good then I'd suspect the receiver is a dud. It happens. KoPilot Lite will not land the model, where did you read that? It'll circle the home position only.
@@Painless360 loll,id be mistaken kopilot and sparrow v2😅... Which way shud we set the rx antenna actually ya? Any relative angled? I did tried few angled tho,

Can anyone inform me of the lead connection of the PWM cable. On changing the connection on the plug that goes to the RX my identification dots came off!! when I removed to change the correct channels. its white plus the 3 black leads from left to right in conjunction with the zohd PWM connection ie AIL, ELE, THR & Rudder, Thank you.
The way to make this DSMX compatible is to pull the number 1, 2 & 3 wires on the 4 wire PWM connector. Reorder them so the sequence is TAER. Painless360 covers this in his video here. ruclips.net/video/qAAFfnQBlK0/видео.html
It will be in the specs or the manual. Most will have it written on the unit to show which is the SBUS output. If you cannot find any of those then it usually means that it doesn't have an SBUS out...
Hope you can help: I just installed my New ZOHD lite on a flying wing. But after some hours think there may be an issue with the unit. Its connected to a dsm2 CRX receiver using the PWM adapter in the order A E T R (Ch 1 2 3 4 ) and I am using an original (old) Spektrum DX7 The mode plug is in channel 6 as thats where 3 pos switch is as standard on the DX7. All seems to work ok in manual mode but LED 1 and 2 remain on ? should'nt they be off in manual ? Also no matter if I change the TX directions or the order on the receiver to E A T R, with the arrow on the ZOHD pointing forward to the nose. In stabalise mode if I roll the model the elevators respond and if I pitch up and down the Ailerons respond ? Please note I know they are "elevons" I am talking about response to movement in pitch and roll. I have built many models with FC like Arduplane and pixhawk etc and never had any issue. Rotation of the servo direction of travel Potentiometers has no effect of the ZOHD which has "ailerons and elevator control reversed" (not talking about direction of travel) when the unit is in stabalise Any suggestions would be welcome as I thought this would be a 10 min job lol PS I have of course got the servo wires in the correct place on the ZOHD as right elevon left elevon and throttle in that order. If I rotated the FC so the arrow pointed down the wing it responds correcty to pitch and roll ? PPS No mixing is enabled in the DX7
Took the plane out today, and after getting good GPS lock gave it a flight. No Drama at all. Manual mode all Good. Stabalize Mode strong corrections, RTL working (Result !!!) Plane flew completely as expected with No issues . Even though the FC arrow is not pointing to the nose of the plane? I cant see any way to change what the gyros are assigned to ? But it all works correctly !
@@SentinalUAV Your "problem" is caused by having your servos mounted in the reverse direction to the way they are in the Kopilot manual. (It is very hard to see!) If you had just reversed the position of the Aileron and Elevator plugs onto the Kopilot it would have worked. By reversing the mounting direction of the Kopilot that is what you have effectively done. If setting up a V-tail also watch out for similar problems. The ZOHD Talon 250g manual shows the Elevator and Rudder connections reversed to the Kopilot manual diagram for a V-tail for just that reason. ;-)
@@theoztreecrasher2647 The first thing I tried was reversing the plugs on the co-pilot and also tried reversing them on the receiver but none of this is any good until I rotated the car pilot 90° then everything worked fine. Even tried changing the direction of travel in the transmitter but that didn’t work either. Besides it’s pretty clear that all of these flight controllers require the mixing to take place in the flight controller and not in the transmitter
Hi I am having trouble with my kopilot. When I go into return to home mode the ailerons move up and down. Everything else works fine. What do you think the problems are. Wally
@@Painless360 are you saying that it will be ok when I get it into the air. How do I do auto launch. When I put the kopilot into return to home mode to auto launch the ailerons are still moving up and down.
@@waltercreuco5520 Just be certain to have your throttle cut disabled and the throttle set ABOVE 0%. Doesn't matter where you set it up to about 70% as the Kopilot will automatically set that as a minimum value. But you can get more grunt for take off if you set it ABOVE that 70%! You MUST also have the throttle ABOVE 0% when you select RTH by the switch when flying or the motor won't start either - be warned if you do gliding with the motor off!
Oops -- I made a small mistake in my previous comment about the Kopilot Lite. It's actually RTH Mode (Return To Home) which makes hand-launching easy -- not Fence Mode. Sorry for the confusion.
That's only for sat. receivers. Let me know if there are full sized Spektrum receivers that don't run on 5v (like all those shown in the video).. Happy flying!
Hi there great vids. I just spent all day with mates setting this up to a spectrum receiver and dx6e. It is not easy to do. all the settings in the transmitter and setting the 3 way switch is a nightmare. The unit only works in the gear channl. So far I've got the model set to normal and done a channel assign to match the kopilot instructions. Any help anyone could provide would be wonderful!!
@@tonesrandall hi tony. After creating a plane type as normal go to flight mode set up and choose a 3 way switch. ( i used G )Then go to channel assign. Where it's says gear, change inhibit to gear.(gear : gear ) Now go to digital switch setup. You should see switch : select. Change select to flight mode. 3 numbers should come up for the 3 way switch. Change the percentages for each number. Number 1 needs to be - 100% number 2 is 0% and number 3 is +100%. 0 will be manual mode. -100% will be RTH mode and +100% will be stable mode. At the bottom of that screen it should say channel. It should say gear beside it. Then Go back into main screen. Power up plane and wait for solid red light. Toggle threw your 3 way switch and you should see the lights doing diffent things. Check manual to confirm what lights should be on for each mode. Sorry it's hard to explain like this but it will work. Let me know how you go. 👍

Can you change the direction of the Auto Launch? Mine only goes Clockwise.
Sadly not. I hoped they would have released a more feature rich version by now... Happy flying
great tips as allwats buddy.thankyou
Will you be doing one using the crossfire (nano rx) at all? I had a mare trying to set it up using sbus. In the end I needed to use an old flysky with pwm.
Taking kopot out in my new nano talon evo today. My 1st adventure into fixed wing! Arrrr
I've not tried it but there setup would be as normal. The Sbus on this is standard. Next time I get a Kopilot in I'll try it..
@@Painless360 I thought it would be so, but having not used something like this before it wasnt working. Look forward to your video.
I really should join your patrion to buy you some beers!!

Thanks!
Cant get it to work with spmar620
next black to throttle) but all to no avail! Do you have the correct wiring please, please!! Many thanks
Can any one HELP Please I am trying to setup a Spektrum DX6
radio to Kopilot Lite and having the following problem in manual mode.
@@Painless360 ughhh..
@@Painless360 thanks for the reply! I appreciate the info.
Hi, I'm trying to do this but with a Matek R24 pwm Rx. The pins aren't labeled throttle, rudder, etc, just numbered.
How would I know which spots to put the pins in for the pwm connector?
ruclips.net/video/3-l7mEklEY4/видео.html may help
Thank you!
Maybe you can mix those two switches to get a three position output? Best of luck
@@Painless360 Thank you and yes you can.
Hi how can I setup rth with Spektrum nx10 if transmitter is turned of ie failsafe thanks
Usually you can store channel positions on the RX in the event of fail-safe. Store the mode switch to the RTH position. Best of luck
Help with Spectrum Tx have change the pins on Kopilot as described. Where do I connect the ESC throttle cable to. Regards Ray age 81
Throttle is CH1 on a Spektrum reciever I hope that helps..
Painless360 yes thank you I now have all PWM leads in the correct 4 pin locations and plugged in the receiver. Where do I plug the throttle connector that comes from the ESC does it plug into the KOPILOT under Throttle. Sorry to be a nuisance ray
Into the THR output. Check the connnection diagrams in manual. Best of luck with it
I presume the Spektrum serial receiver would be treated as PPM and attach thru sbus? If so how would you get the channel mapping to matched up?
SBUS and PPM are different things. You can't plug one into the other and it'll work. See my RC basics video all about it.. Best of luck!
Hi Again. I got mine all setup but when i go to RTH my surfaces twitch real bad even with satellite connected. What am i doing wrong. Also this is on a wing. Thanks again.
That is normal. Happy flying
Hi could you try contacting the kopilot to a spectrum ar620 as I've tried for months with no success and maybe make a video of how you did it as cant find any help thanks
The connection will need to be PWM and as shown. I'm guessing the channel order is TAER on the outputs but you'd have to check. Best of luck
HI Lee thanks for sharing your knowledge to set fail safe in pwm with a spektum tx do i have to bind the rx with the mode switch set to rth and the throttle stick at half position thanks
I'd always set Failsafe to throttle off. RTH mode would make sense too..
@@Painless360 did you tried to switch the tx off in flight to see if the fail safe worrk
You should always test the Failsafe. Remember to remove the props... See my plane and Failsafe setup video...
Does this also work with elrs?
Only is you use a PWM receiver or a CRSF to PWM adapter... No native SBUS output in ELRS yet (that I can see)
Hi Lee,
I have read all your comments, but i cant get the esc to arm even when i have the GPS light on i dont have a s bus and all other systems work. any ideas?
It only arms with a GPS lock... What troubleshooting have you already done?
@@Painless360 Nope. No GPS lock required (or even installed!) - just set channel 5 Mode Switch to Manual (0%) and ESC will arm. If installed the ESC won't arm in the Stabilized or RTH modes before GPS lock is obtained. If it won't arm in Manual Mode then almost certainly the problem here is using an ESC that is incompatible with the long boot-up time of the Kopilot.
Hi, will an ELRS RX work, if so can you recommend one? Thanks.
Only sbus and PWM inputs supported so you could use one of the PWM recievers for ELRS. See my ExpressLRS playlist.. Best of luck
Many thanks
Lee, Thank you for the informative video. Would it be possible for you to see if the ZoHD Kopilot would work with the ImmersionRC Atto Receiver ? I tested with Radiomaster, FlySky receivers and they all work great. I can't get it working with the Atto Receiver. Let me know what you think.
If it outputs standard SBUS then it should work fine.. I've not got one here to try.. Best of luck!
Since it has a, will it relay my speed as I’m flying? I really want my speed displayed for mr
Sadly not. Happy flying
Managed to fly around 100ft radius only, during last landing ive stalled the bixler and it just dive stall from 20ft height..no way to survive it😅..loll
Conclusion: what is not right about it? Did i missed setup something on Tx16s that i just bought new?
Kopilot unit- RTH function didnt land the plane, is it just thats all?
The day before, i did try out other setups: elrs mode. Jumper Aion mini tx module & Jumper Aion mini 2.4 Rx(pwm).. only ch a.e.t.r did work, but ch5 for use the flight mode is not work..anyway i did not have access to see the Aion mini Rx pwm signal graph,as my laptop is not compatible to download the Expresslrs Configurator(mine is Windows8, popup blocked says didnt have 64-bit to run it)🤦🏻♂️
Or should i try my other ORX receivers tats laying around? Got a Orx R610Lite v2, a Orx NanoRx ppm rx, a JR R721 and a R921 rx sets..
Btw/: i will be need to have at least 7or8 useable channels to run also an fpv pantilt 2servo gimbal.
Will someone please help me out...?😭
Ill be really appreciate your help.
I did tried few angled tho,
See my antenna lab series that covers all about antenna alignment. If it as bad as you'd say I'd suspect the receiver is bad.
@@Painless360 yes Lee...im suspecting it too, well.. 'manufacturing defects' still goes around these days..perhaps.
Allrite Lee, ill go check your lab test now...
Thanks for your generous help Lee, ill give a heads-up ...if its no done✌🏾😅
Hi’ Can kopilot handle ppm signal ?
please see my setup video on it..
help, the gps leds do not turn on, the card does work, the return to desoegue does not, previously it did work.
It sounds like something has failed... Best of luck
Can anyone inform me of the lead connection of the PWM cable. On changing the connection on the plug that goes to the RX my identification dots came off!! when I removed to change the correct channels. its white plus the 3 black leads from left to right in conjunction with the zohd PWM connection ie AIL, ELE, THR & Rudder,
Thank you.
KOPILOT wiring diagram around 4:30
The way to make this DSMX compatible is to pull the number 1, 2 & 3 wires on the 4 wire PWM connector. Reorder them so the sequence is TAER. Painless360 covers this in his video here. ruclips.net/video/qAAFfnQBlK0/видео.html
Great video as always! Instead of changing pins for pwm, can’t I just change the channels inside my radio to match?
I cover that in the series... Happy flying
How do you know if your receiver has a s bus output ? is that the same as battery output ? I am running a sport 6 channel receiver
It will be in the specs or the manual. Most will have it written on the unit to show which is the SBUS output. If you cannot find any of those then it usually means that it doesn't have an SBUS out...
@@Painless360 thank you
Hi everyone, is there anything that has to be changed when using a mode 1 transmitter? Many thanks.
Nope. Even the stick positions for calibration are the same.
@@theoztreecrasher2647 Great, thanks for that.
Not sure, all of the stuff I do to get it working is in the video. Sounds like something is not setup right. Best of luck with it...

If you are on the bench and not flying, that us normal and expected..
@@Painless360 are you saying that it will be ok when I get it into the air. How do I do auto launch. When I put the kopilot into return to home mode to auto launch the ailerons are still moving up and down.
You just throw it and it'll detect the throw and start the motor and climb.. Best of luck!

Hi there great vids. I just spent all day with mates setting this up to a spectrum receiver and dx6e. It is not easy to do. all the settings in the transmitter and setting the 3 way switch is a nightmare. The unit only works in the gear channl. You need to change the percentages in the digital set up etc etc or it will not work. And yes chaning the pins around is way Easier. Happy to help anyone else tho 👍
Hi space traveler. Im hoping you'd be able to share your spektrum setup with me and others that I'm sure are struggling with this setup. I've been playing with this thing for 2 hours now and I've gotten nowhere, not really sure where to turn next. Any help you can provide would be great.
