Andrew, very nice review indeed. Couple of points that are worth noting. 1) As with most stabs of this kind you do not need to use a Y lead on the ailerons. You can use (say) channel 5 or 6 direct from the receiver for the second aileron. The KoPilot will only stabilise one aileron but this is perfectly adequate for most models. I have used it with other stabs which do not have internal mixing for dual ailerons. It also works with my Kopilot. 2) I'm sure the 70ft RTH height is not AGL but Above launch point height. There is no way the Kopilot can allow for changes in ground level without a radio altimeter or internal terrain map so you might run into trouble if you expect it to work in hilly terrain. John

I knew nothing about these GPS gyro RTH / stabilisation modules and that was a very useful video. Good to see you use the Firefly 8S 090 lens for videoing, I use the same for the RC video on my channel. Only 5K subscribers so far , a way to go to catch you!
Actually been witing on a decent review of the Kopilot since its release earlier this year. Looks great for long range when you don't want to use a Pixhawk or Inav. Hmmm looking forward to you getting into Ardupilot. I do remember you saying about autopilots "there interesting but I dont really need them." I think that still stands true but they can be helpful.
Fantastic video Andrew, best review I have seen on the Kopilot Lite, I am really impressed with how well it works in the Ranger G2 most of the videos I have watched featuring the Kopilot Lite the gains or throws have been too high and the plane or wing has had a fair amount of shake when stabilized. Really curious how it will perform in the lighter Dart 250 as I have one on the way, you may just save me some headaches. Thanks again always informative and a great source of inspiration, Cheers from the cold, rainy, snowing Midwest USA!
Thanks Keith. The Dart 250G + Kopilot video will be up tomorrow. Stabilisation gains do need to be dialled back a lot for the little Dart. Editing up a tweaking video right now.

Hi andrew. I finally got to fly using this unit. It really is awsome. It would be great if RTH and FENCE mode were on a switch on my transmitter. I'm wondering if you could use a buddy box with this setup? Would be great to help beginners.
I have several of these great little FC's and on reading the accompanying leaflet it seems to be saying, if you don't plug in the GPS, you get altitude hold instead of RTH. I haven't tried it yet but if you're just flying locally, it could be useful to know.
@@johnsheehy6172 I don't know but it's probable that the GPS unit will treat the point at which it acquires more than 6 satellites as the Home Point as long as it has Vcc and Ground continuously applied to it. The Kopilot unit will operate on that Home Point when it is receiving the information via the GPS Tx/Rx connections. So your set-up just might work by using ch6-AUX to operate an RC switch to connect or break the Tx? line. You would need to set the receiver to failsafe ch6 to re-connect when signal is lost.
Hi! Great video. Questions: 1. My wing flies well in normal mode. It flies also well in stab mode but I have almost no control in this mode. The travel of Ail and Ele is much less in this mode, almost nothing. Why? Using a frsky taranis q7. 2. For the throttle to work on my controller I have to inverse it (weight -100 on Taranis). 3. I cannot calibrate the plane (sticks inside and down). The green leds won't flash after 5 seconds. Thanks.
Thanks Martin. I have a video showing all the setup and problems coming soon. 1. That is the way Kopilot works and I agree there is not enough control in stabilise mode. Need to increase the throws mechanically by changing which hole the pushrods connect to, then reducing the weights just for manual mode switch position. 2. That is weird. Have you inverted Ch3 in the Outputs page? 3. To use the stick command method of level calibration you must have 100 weight on Ch1 Ail, Ch2 Ele, Ch3 Thr and Ch4 Rud and no throttle cut activated. Kopilot does the level cal automatically when you plug the battery in so maybe dont bother with the stick command method. Must be in Stabilise mode (not RTH)
Thanks for the setup video. I have a ESC without the 5 volt bec . Do you think the separate 5 volt bec power can connect to my radio receiver and pass through to the kopilot flight controller?
Hi, I've recently bought one of these to fit in my AR wing. Your installation guide was really nice and clear, thanks! I just wanted to ask when I turn on rth on the ground the servos seem to glitch or move in a pretty aggressive random motion it's knocked my confidence trying out the auto launch function tbh. Is this normal?! If not any ideas what it could be? TIA. AJ
Hi Andrew, Thanks for putting up this lovely detailed presentation on ZOHD. Great Job! I have a quick question before I place the order, How do we connected two Ailerons that are controlled by two independent servos? Do we need a Y cable or the board supports two servos for Ailerons.
Great video as always, very informative. Just got a Kopilot (thus the question now), it seems you set it up, fly in manual mode, trim on the tx and land. You then re-set the Kopilot to allow for the tx trimming but do you then re-set the tx trims to zero? Thanks.
So this Kopilot system comes included with the ZOHD Talon EVO FPV plane. For long distance FPV flying over 2km, is there a special SBUS receiver you recommend to avoid losing signal?
Andy, yet again another great demo. I assume that ailerons would have to go through y lead so they utilise one channe on the board. I currently have them on ch 1 and 6 so I can mix them for flaps.
If I were using a Micro Skyhunter with no rudder, could I use one of those cheap 2 servo pan/tilts, and plug one into aux, and the other into rudder channel? Then just remap the rudder and aux channels to the wheels on the flysky?
Aux (Ch6) is only usable if you connect via SBUS, but yes it should work. Better to plug the pan/tilt straight into your receiver if you can. But you need the rudder channel if you want to do the recalibration using stick commands.
When you set the radio failsafe in RTH mode . Do you set the cruise throttle on your failsafe . I set up the Kopilot flight controller in the mini sky hunter with Ezuhf one of my more favorite planes. Thanks
Have you used the ZOHD camera system yet? How do you feel about its OSD overlay? Is it worth the $36 for this unit sold alone? Got another AIO cam that might work better for less $$ ? Great install demo. Thanks. Jim
Excellent video. I'm curious to know if it can recover from a spin stall? My nephew has the old Nano Talon and has gotten it into a bad spin stall in stabilize mode several times and the only way out seems to be to go to manual and correct there (if you have enough height of course). I'm now changing his fuselage and wonder if this is the time to switch stabilizers.
I've had over a dozen successful flights with Kopilot on my ZOHD Drift. But the first time I used RTH, I was unable to switch out of RTH after the model started circling over my home point. I tried both manual and stabilize. Finally, after about 5 minutes and repeated tries, I was able to switch back to stabilize and land. I'm using a TBS Crossfire receiver and had good link quality. Just wondering if anyone had a similar experience.
Love my Ranger G2...amazing distance, even on a 2200 3S...F405 wing FC...UHF and long range video...Great plane. I'm assuming you set the RX to Failsafe into the RTH setting... With a bit of mid throttle to bring it back..?
Hi Andrew, congratulations on your channel. I have a kopilot, why are movements in stabilized mode so limited compared to manual mode? Is there a possibility of increasing them to make the wing more agile? thanks greetings
Thanks Andrew, I am 100% stabilized, I still do not have a good response in stabilized, when I have lower gains I have more aileron travel and it is more agile worse it does not stabilize well, it jumps, I cannot find the balance between well stabilized and more aileron control and depth. perhaps ZOHD should consider the possibility of better adjusting this problem. thanks greetings
G'day Andrew Thanks for the instruction; good to see that your experiment was used on something that you would not mind destroying, I don't have that luxury. I have been looking at the ZOHD Kopilot and your Favourite F405 for one of my 1600mm Volantex. They are almost the same price at the moment!! Which would you recommend for newbie FPV 1-2k flying? Cheers.
Hi Andrews. Thanks for another great video. I’ve just brought myself a KOPILOT lite and am looking forward to installing it. Just one question though if that’s ok? What way up does the GPS unit go ? Don’t see it mentioned anywhere in the manual . Many thanks and happy flying. ✈️
brilliant vid. andrew. just gone to bangood and bought one as im fairly new to the hobby, only thing i didnt understand was (s.bus) what is an s bus ? thanks
SBUS is an alternative way to connect receiver to flight control board. All channels are sent via one wire, rather than the usual PWM which sends each channel on its own wire. Kopilot can handle either PWM or SBUS connection.
Can i have crow mix braking when my ailerons are plugged into a ZHOD KOPILOT LITE but turned off? Current set up is a Voalntex Phoenix V2, Flysky FS-i6x and FS-i6b, plus the Kopilot. what i am thinking is it possible to use the crow mix when the Kopilot is NOT engaged like when coming into landing i turn the Kopilot off so would crow braking then work or not? or would i need a bigger number receiver? as i have a 6 channel that is all used up.
Hello Andrew. Great video once again. Listen bud I am setting up a new nano talon EVO with Kop_Pilot and I am wanting to get the failsafe settings correct. What I need to know is when I am in my failsafe custom settings what do we do with the throttle. I ask this cause once channel 5 RTH is initiated I would think the kopilot will be controlling throttle as if we engaged RTH by switch. Please let me know how the failsafe on open tx should be setup. Thanks in advance buddy_ Joe
Kopilot handles the throttle so you dont need to set it in the custom failsafe setup. Here's photo of the failsafe screen ruclips.net/user/postUgy99qSI7mOi5_1US894AaABCQ
Hi Andrew. I’m new to RC but built a Multiplex Heron with a FrSky x18. I like the idea of this RTH function. If I plug the servos into the Kopilot then does that mean I loose all the mixing and deflections I took ages to setup when the servos were plugged directly into the receiver?
@@AndrewNewton So if I just want to use it for RTH then I’d fly manual 99% of the time and just flick the switch to engage RTH, at which point the Kopilot kicks in and disregards all my settings. If that’s the case then when selecting manual mode, does the transmitter flick to different model on the transmitter or if it how can you setup manually mode like I have it now, without the KoPilot? I’m struggling to see why people would want to get rid of all the mixing and trims and fly like that all the time. Doesn’t that defeat much of the enjoyment of RC flying.
Hi Andrew I love your videos thank you for all your great material I am building your beginner plane and it is getting there. I was wondering as it only has rudder and elevator would it still be possible to install the kopilot on that without the ailerons?
hi Andrew great video, can you tell me how to set up failsafe I'm using jumper t16pro and crossfire nano I don't know how to set it up, I turn the tx off and the motor stops completely. thank you.
Hi mate great video and a another Aussie explanation love it. Im new to planes not to rc. I have got a fms 64mm f16 jet yes i know for a first plane its probably not the best haha. But hey here i am. Im currently in the process of buying transmitter budget friendly for now. Im looking at the flysky i6 or frysky x9 in your opinion what is my best option cheers?
Thanks. FlySKY i6 is OK but i6X would give you more channels. But I would strongly recommend a multi-protocol radio running EdgeTX like the Radiomaster Boxer or Zorro. The FrSKY X9 Lite is excellent but restricted to FrSKY receivers.
Could I use ZOHD Kopilot with Frsky D8R-II PLUS ? Are they compatible? Jus to connect in PWM? Thanks. If yes, I will buy it. Thank you, great explanation!
Thanks for another nice video Andrew. This setup provides RTH and RTL features in addition to what S6R or S8R has? Or is there any knife edge gyro kind of support available? Also appreciate if you could share a video for complete S6R or S8R setup with X9D or point me to one if already exists
Bought the Kopilot, all ok , my question is how to set RTH if there is signal loss. How do I do set failsafe on my Frsky receiver and settings on Taranis radio?
Depends on your receiver but with X Series - Flick your mode switch to RTH position, In the model setup scroll down to Failsafe, change to Custom then select Set. I have uploaded a photo of the screen in my Community Tab
Great review mate. Looks like a winner and something that will be a blessing for Deltas with "bigass props", not a bad price either considering what you get. Is there any way to Adjust the RTL Height at all?
Thanks for an interesting and informative video, I have watched it several times. I have ordered a Kopilot and currently awaiting it's delivery. As you mentioned that it could be used with the FlySky i6 system a video of the setup for this would be good. My 6B r/x has both IBus and SBus so that should work out OK. Once set up using 100% throws can you then setup hi and lo rates in the t/x?
Probably a dumb question. You said to set up the receiver for Ch 5 to go to RTH. Makes perfect sense operationally, but I can't figure out how to set that in the receiver. Did you mean transmitter? I can set something like that in the transmitter/radio, but not sure how the receiver will know this info when its lost connection. Anyway, I set it up, but not sure I want to test it :)
Hi andrew. I just received my qx7 and a xm+ reciever. I've been a spectrum user up till now. I've hooked up the kopilot and managed to get it all working in my bix 3. However I don't understand the fale safe part of it. Would you be able to explain how to get RTH if it flys out of rage etc. I tried RTH-100 but makes no sense to me. Thks 👍
The XM+ manual tells how to set failsafe. Put the mode switch into RTH position then set failsafe on the receiver (or transmitter if your using ACCESS)

Great video Andrew thanks. I installed mine yesterday but I can't get it to confirm the level flight setup. I put the sticks to the positions shown in the manual and your video with it in stabilization mode but I dont get the flashing light confirmation. Am I missing something here?

I was putting the sticks in the right position in stabilised mode but it wasn't giving the flashing light confirmation. I knew nothing about these GPS gyro RTH / stabilisation modules and that was a very useful video. Good to see you use the Firefly 8S 090 lens for videoing, I use the same for the RC video on my channel. Only 5K subscribers so far , a way to go to catch you!
Glad to hear it Bob, I am one of your 5K. You deserve more.
@@AndrewNewton Hey, thanks. I'm flattered!
@@AndrewNewton You make good clear presentations without any waffle. Good work!
Thanks Bob, I'm no good at waffle and padding
Actually been witing on a decent review of the Kopilot since its release earlier this year. Looks great for long range when you don't want to use a Pixhawk or Inav.
Hmmm looking forward to you getting into Ardupilot. I do remember you saying about autopilots "there interesting but I dont really need them." I think that still stands true but they can be helpful.
As my buddy MADRC says "Dont leave home without one"
@@AndrewNewton So you found it's really good? Seems it replaces stuff that 5 years old and alot cheaper.
Feladat kijelölt ponthoz menjen a hajó. A--B vissza B--A.
Not suitable for boats. You need something like SpeedyBee F405 Wing and INAV or Ardupilot with GPS and compass
Hi andrew. I finally got to fly using this unit. It really is awsome. It would be great if RTH and FENCE mode were on a switch on my transmitter. I'm wondering if you could use a buddy box with this setup? Would be great to help beginners.
Buddy box is more a transmitter function so it should work.
I have several of these great little FC's and on reading the accompanying leaflet it seems to be saying, if you don't plug in the GPS, you get altitude hold instead of RTH. I haven't tried it yet but if you're just flying locally, it could be useful to know.
Yes I must check that, thanks for the reminder John
If it works you could put the GPS on a switch and include that switch in your failsafe using the aux channel if you're on SBUS.
On second thoughts, home might be where the GPS was last switched on.
Too cool, i have that in my cart for the skyhunter and sonic AR 900mm, thanks!
Excellent tutorial thanks Andrew... 🏴✈️
Excellent demo! Would like to see the vc400 install demo.

hello you understand that the controller works, you recommend it if it works well the return home thanks for your answer greetings excellent videos
Yes Return to Home works very well
Hi! Great video.
Questions:
Yes, absolutely
Hi, I've recently bought one of these to fit in my AR wing. Your installation guide was really nice and clear, thanks! I just wanted to ask when I turn on rth on the ground the servos seem to glitch or move in a pretty aggressive random motion it's knocked my confidence trying out the auto launch function tbh. Is this normal?! If not any ideas what it could be? TIA. AJ
That's normal behaviour. Time to chuck it! Just make sure elevons are working in the right direction for sticks AND stabilisation.
@@AndrewNewton thanks! Keep the videos coming!
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for putting up this lovely detailed presentation on ZOHD. Great Job!
I have a quick question before I place the order, How do we connected two Ailerons that are controlled by two independent servos?
Do we need a Y cable or the board supports two servos for Ailerons.
Must use a Y lead for ailerons with the Kopilot
Great video as always, very informative. Just got a Kopilot (thus the question now), it seems you set it up, fly in manual mode, trim on the tx and land. You then re-set the Kopilot to allow for the tx trimming but do you then re-set the tx trims to zero? Thanks.
No you would leave the trims as they were. But are best to land then adjust the pushrods manually first, then you will not need any trim.
So this Kopilot system comes included with the ZOHD Talon EVO FPV plane. For long distance FPV flying over 2km, is there a special SBUS receiver you recommend to avoid losing signal?
FrSKY R9 system is what I use
Andy, yet again another great demo. I assume that ailerons would have to go through y lead so they utilise one channe on the board. I currently have them on ch 1 and 6 so I can mix them for flaps.
That's right Y-lead required for this
@@AndrewNewton after everything I've learnt from all your mixes and here I am about to buy a new gadget only to remove them lol
Thanks
No, just set Failsafe to activate RTH Mode, dont include throttle because the Kopilot takes control.
Now that ardupilot supports cheap F4 and F7 boards, see no use for this, but I appreciate the simplicity.
All you need with this is the screwdriver, not a PC
@@AndrewNewton Agreed, this is a vast improvement for the majority of flyers who don't want to spend their time soldering and programming.
Fantastic video. Tanks!
How about shutting the motor off once the plane's circling above you ? Will it auto land ?
Cheers
When the battery expires maybe.
Andrew Newton Oh, you mean you can't turn the motor off while in automatic mode ?
@@AndrewNewton Hahaha, I love that reply.
Have you used the ZOHD camera system yet? How do you feel about its OSD overlay? Is it worth the $36 for this unit sold alone? Got another AIO cam that might work better for less $$ ? Great install demo. Thanks. Jim
Best of the All in One cameras, but a normal FPV cam will give less distorted image. OSD is great if you want it.
Thanks for your reply. What other AIO would you suggest that has better imaging? Do you have a you tube video on the use of the ZOHD camera?
Excellent video. I'm curious to know if it can recover from a spin stall? My nephew has the old Nano Talon and has gotten it into a bad spin stall in stabilize mode several times and the only way out seems to be to go to manual and correct there (if you have enough height of course). I'm now changing his fuselage and wonder if this is the time to switch stabilizers.
I really haven't pushed I that far, I'll keep trying
I've had over a dozen successful flights with Kopilot on my ZOHD Drift. But the first time I used RTH, I was unable to switch out of RTH after the model started circling over my home point. I tried both manual and stabilize. Finally, after about 5 minutes and repeated tries, I was able to switch back to stabilize and land. I'm using a TBS Crossfire receiver and had good link quality. Just wondering if anyone had a similar experience.
It happened to me in geofence mode but not RTH
Love my Ranger G2...amazing distance, even on a 2200 3S...F405 wing FC...UHF and long range video...Great plane.
I'm assuming you set the RX to Failsafe into the RTH setting... With a bit of mid throttle to bring it back..?
I only set the RTH switch in Failsafe, nothing else. Throttle seems to be controlled by the board in a failsafe.
@@AndrewNewton Good info, thanks Andrew....someone in my Club wants me to advise him on this for use in his high end Moto glider....
Hi Andrew, congratulations on your channel.
I have a kopilot, why are movements in stabilized mode so limited compared to manual mode? Is there a possibility of increasing them to make the wing more agile?
thanks greetings
That's just the way it is. Need to increase your throws so that manual flying is good at 50% rates then program 100% rate for stabilised modes.
G'day Andrew
Thanks for the instruction; good to see that your experiment was used on something that you would not mind destroying, I don't have that luxury.
I have been looking at the ZOHD Kopilot and your Favourite F405 for one of my 1600mm Volantex. They are almost the same price at the moment!!
Which would you recommend for newbie FPV 1-2k flying?
Cheers.
Kopilot would be quicker and much easier to get going.
Hi Andrews. Thanks for another great video. I’ve just brought myself a KOPILOT lite and am looking forward to installing it. Just one question though if that’s ok? What way up does the GPS unit go ? Don’t see it mentioned anywhere in the manual . Many thanks and happy flying. ✈️
See how I have it mounted in the video. Beitian text facing down.
Andrew Newton
That’s great. Thank you. ✈️
High Andrew. Can you advise. could I put this unit into a full house sailplane. Multiplex heron.
Not if you want full house function. It will do ailerons only on a Y lead
brilliant vid. andrew. just gone to bangood and bought one as im fairly new to the hobby, only thing i didnt understand was (s.bus) what is an s bus ? thanks
SBUS is an alternative way to connect receiver to flight control board. All channels are sent via one wire, rather than the usual PWM which sends each channel on its own wire. Kopilot can handle either PWM or SBUS connection.
Thanks for Magnificent video ...
Nice video. Can kopilot support flaps on a 4 channel fixed wing?
If you use SBUS there is a spare AUX channel on the Kopilot to use for flaps, or you can plug flaps straight in to your receiver ch 6
@@AndrewNewton thanks for responding!
appreciate the video. I was about to put my kopilot board in my old crashtesthobby wing, now i dont have to read the manual :)
The manual is kind of confusing.
@@AndrewNewton strange that your the first person to mention the launch mode. That's awesome though.
Nice video. Just not sure how you set the failsafe to rth if connection is lost
Do you know how to set failsafe on your receiver? Which transmitter?
@@AndrewNewton yes. Am running crcrossfire with the teranis qx7. I have the failsafe set to cut.
Ok, I don't know Crossfire. Look at Painless360s channel
Hi Andrew. I’m new to RC but built a Multiplex Heron with a FrSky x18. I like the idea of this RTH function. If I plug the servos into the Kopilot then does that mean I loose all the mixing and deflections I took ages to setup when the servos were plugged directly into the receiver?
Correct. No mixing or trims if using a flight control board. The radio trims would only work in Manual mode. Best to set throws and trims mechanically
Yes, I would much rather fly the plane myself in manual. You could have trims and mixes only active when the mode switch is in the Manual position.
Thanks, helpful vid. I'm beginner so I learn a lot from your videos. This autopilot system will with work with my Flysky FS i6 radio?
Yes, perfect radio for it.
Hi Andrew I love your videos thank you for all your great material I am building your beginner plane and it is getting there. I was wondering as it only has rudder and elevator would it still be possible to install the kopilot on that without the ailerons?
I have tried INAV in that way and it sort of works as long as the plane is very docile.
@@AndrewNewton thank you for your quick answer I might enable the ailerons on the plane and use the stabilisation option
hi Andrew great video, can you tell me how to set up failsafe I'm using jumper t16pro and crossfire nano I don't know how to set it up, I turn the tx off and the motor stops completely. thank you.
Can't help with Crossfire sorry
Should be but I have not tried it
Thanks for another nice video Andrew. This setup provides RTH and RTL features in addition to what S6R or S8R has? Or is there any knife edge gyro kind of support available? Also appreciate if you could share a video for complete S6R or S8R setup with X9D or point me to one if already exists
Only one stability mode and RTH on the Kopilot. Surely a RUclips search will find a setup video, have you tried?
Tried but most of them with qx7 or x9D plus not sure if there is any difference with X9D
No that's all fixed
Very nice tutorial Andrew!
Many thanks!
Yes that would be the best way Robert. 50% for manual and 100% for stabilised.
Hi Andrew! What maximum voltage could be used to power main board (Kopilot lite) ? For example if I run my receiver with 7 volts or so...
Hard to find any information. 5V maximum is mentioned on RCGroups
You are programming the receiver when you choose a failsafe mode. How to set it depends which receiver and transmitter you have.
Thanks a bunch. I learned something today.
Hi Andrew, do you think it matters which way up the GPS Module is installed ? ... Regards, Pete
Very much. Antenna has to point at the sky, but it can be under foam.

Great video Andrew thanks. I installed mine yesterday but I can't get it to confirm the level flight setup. I put the sticks to the positions shown in the manual and your video with it in stabilization mode but I dont get the flashing light confirmation. Am I missing something here?
Sorted! something to note for all, because I had my rates set very low, the kopilot wasn't carrying out the level attitude calibration. I was putting the sticks in the right position in stabilised mode but it wasn't giving the flashing light confirmation. Painless360 said to increase the rates to 100% and bingo, worked straight away. 👍
