There are lots of cool and innovative stuffs happened in The Dark Knight Trilogy but there is no emotional stakes, you don't really care about any characters. But here in Joker, it makes you care and feel.
It took several bad days to make this Joker snap. Beaten up on the job, losing his job, getting assaulted on a train which lead to a self defense/execution, getting rejected by his supposed "father", discovering his mother was never truly his mother while also being responsible for his mental scars and conditions, and then discovering his love interest was never his due to delusions. Imagine actually cramming *all that* into one day.
This is a VERY effective way for the movie to do that last kill. We don't even see what he DOES, we just see him leaving PERFECT bloody footprints, there's so much of it on his shoes, and we're just left to wonder what he DID to her!
This is when he actually completely transcends himself to the Joker persona, you can see him dancing around after killing the doctor in joy. This is the comicbook Joker in all his scooby-doo esque glory.
i love how after all the crazy/sad/disturbing shit this movie brought us... It ends with the classic 'The End' logo... Its as if its a fun/happy/innocent movie as if nothing bad ever happened
@Ali Shabbiri nope, after he Shot Murray he laughed genuinely. After he sees the crowd going wild when he's in the Police Car, He laughed genuinely. When he told the Joke about the son who got killed by a drunk driver, he laughs genuinely...

@@pummyy I agree. Nobody can beat that man. Ledger is the joker, not even going to question his acting. But Joaquin's portrayal of a different kind of joker is legendary. Just look at his acting , it's fucking perfection.
Will Rogers it puts a spin on the cliche ending of the main character walking into the sunset and everything is optimistic. The spin there is that Arthur is dancing due to becoming the Joker and feeling like he’s completely free and nothing can hurt him anymore.
I feel this is a callback to Arthur's previous psychiatrist and how she didn't really care about how Joker truly felt. Joker knew that this second psychiatrist would be no different, which is why he completely disregarded her request to know what he was laughing about. No matter what he'd tell her, she wouldn't get it.
It should also be mentioned about Arthur's laughter in the first sequence and how it was his uncontrollable head-trauma laugh, and in the final sequence it's true, genuine laughter.

It reminded me of that scene in Silence of the Lambs where doctor Lecter is talking to the Senator about Buffalo Bill. Even though they have him chained up and restrained, he's still in complete control of the situation. The funniest part is that they still feel like they have power over him.

Just saying, the 70s-early 80s aesthetic was one of the best choices made for this film. The grittiness of that era pairs well with the tone of the story.

The laughing scene is so unnerving for me. His portrayal of an individual with mental health who just lost it and is in his own mind is spot on. I work for a mental health facility and I had a kid who was scitchzophrenic and he would go on laughing tangents while smoking his cigerette to the very last inch left besides the filter. I'd often ask what he was laughing at and he would just say "nothin". People who are in their heads so much often do not feel like going the extra effort of explaining what is going on. This scene was intense and acurate to say the least. Bravo.
That’s scary dude 😧!! I’ll be shitting myself if I was in your position, because you never know they’re thinking about. But I also feel pity for them, because it’s out of their control, and they didn’t ask to be in that state of mental instability.

@@Sean-t9n what Todd did doesn't even make sense. He used the brand "Joker", which is about a clown crimelord, to tell the story of a real madman getting raped and shanked in the prison. That's like making a movie about "Batman", but showing Batman getting shanked and dying in his first encounter with crimes because that's what happens in real life. People pay money to see the Joker, the comic character, not to see misery porn of prison abuse. The only thing that makes sense here is Joker 2 getting none of the money Joker 1 got.

Marvel has Deadpool which is the biggest anti-hero known in comics. The Joker is only a good villain if Batman is involved in some capacity otherwise a story without Batman with the Joker is meaningless. Even this movie had to have Bruce Wayne in it to prove that point. While I am a DC Comics fan I will not ignore the success of the MCU which are more popcorn flicks and two or three thought-provoking films that can be half as interesting as a DC film. Also the MCU never had a film bomb as hard as Batman and Robin. I don't understand why we have to always compete, but if people are going to compete they might as well look at the sales proving themselves. Joker is an underrated achievement, but can it continue to follow up more money like the MCU has with their movies.

I want to lie down on my cot now. *Psychiatrist calls for his escort. Ponders his words, shakes her head quizzically. Goes to the staff lounge and asks the other doctors if she can run a joke by them. They listen quietly. She gets to the punchline. One doctor burps but other than that it's silent, and tbh, that one doctor has a history of inappropriate burping so no one bats an eye. Psychiatrist says do any of you get that joke? They all say no. Then one asks if anyone wants to try his wife's new berry cobbler recipe and they all are like oh wow, that sounds amazing. The camera pans out as they are getting plastic forks and napkins. The End. To be honest I can see why they went with another ending.
I actually love that the main song of the movie is “That’s life” by Frank Sinatra (a fav tune of mine personally). It describes all the situation and the life of Arthur so perfectly. In this last scene it’s like Arthur saying “that’s life, I don’t care, I killed some people, I’m the bad guy and I love it, I’m free, it’s all cool”. And that’s why this song as a playback suits amazingly for the ending scene and generally for the whole aesthetic of the movie
It also describes society in general. We all have are different places in life that may be unfair and imbalanced. But we just accept it and say "well, thats life" as if we're submissive to our fate. In the Joker's case, its the same thing but now at a different place in his life where he accepts his fate but no longer submissive to it.
The joke is that Bruce is a loner, an orphan, and an outcast just like the Joker. Arthur expects Bruce to become just like him, a crazed maniac. Ironically, we know that Bruce will be everything the Joker is not. Jokes on him.
The Joke is he created the Batman. The Connection he almost had with Bruce as his Brother expecting to be Thomas Wayne's another son too fell apart, but because of what he did the riot, the chaos and how it was the reason Bruce's parents were dead in the alley all because of him. He finally has the purpose in his life and a connection with Bruce as his Arch nemesis. That's the Big Joke. This is present times. He knows Bruce is Batman and others don't which is why they wouldn't get it.
To me, this ending is what makes it a perfect Joker movie. What does Joker always do? Give a multiple choice past, especially to therapists. Usually in the form of a sob story to garner sympathy. What if all of what we just saw, the Waynes, the Murray Franklin show, all of it, was just another one of those? What if it’s actually what happened and no one believes him because… it’s the Joker? And he’s laughing because he’s a sick, sadistic, evil monster… and he just made you feel bad for him. The jokes on all of us.
@@MaoistJohnWick actually his real story is a bunch of a lies thats how the original creator of him made it. Everytime the joker gives you a backstory its a lie because deep down he hides the truth. However in every story there is some hints of truth. This version however could be true since its made by someone completely different however you wont know one way or the other until the creator says so.
Todd Phillips said this was the only time he was really laughing, all other times were part of his act. The reason it flashes to Bruce in the alley is that this scene (with the doctor) is this takes place in the future where Batman is out there and he made him.
Yes and no. I remember reading that THIS was the only real laugh, but he doesn’t explain WHY!. Which was the movies whole point. It wants to keep you guessing. We know we can’t trust the Jokers Narrative because he THINKS something has happened when it hasn’t. (The girlfriend). So maybe you’re right and he somehow found out the irony of it all in the future. Or maybe he’s the one who shot them. The clown thug does say the exact same thing to Thomas as the joker did to Murray, and they were both seen as father figures. Or maybe none of it happened and we just saw this whole movie in the Jokers head, and THATS the joke. Who knows.
It means this scene is taken place in future where Bruce is now Batman and has sent Joker to Arkham.. He is laughing, because, joker is no longer a man, it's a phenomenon..

I'll bet my grandson has a blueray player. If not, we'll just get a VHS copy lol. Kidding again, thanks again. I'll let you y'all know what I think of it. I'm gonna see if we can watch it sometime this week. Thank You very much Mr. CynicalMemester, Sir, for helping me on this journey to The Joker. I'm looking forward to it!
Dave English You’re welcome sir :)
He is laughing because he was an orphan and now Bruce is too.
Imagine in a parallel universe, the joker just tells her a funny joke and they laugh it off together.
Jim Oscares crazyyy
Or
-- what's so funny?
-- you wouldn't get it
-- try me, Arthur
-- well.... Hahaha.... a man rides a miniature horse into a bar. Orders 3 whiskeys-- says one is for himself, one is for the horse, one is for the gatekeeper. Bartender says ok pal, I see you, I see the horse... Where is the gatekeeper? Guy says-- hahaha-- guy says, well, if you rode through the Siene at midnight with your mother on tap, I'd be asking YOU! *descends into fits of laughter*
-- Arthur, I don't.... understand..
-- I told you you wouldn't get it.
-- Can you... explain it to me?
-- No. I'm tired.
@@antonialeigh did you make that up on the spot.
@@bkimatab f**kin true
Funny thing is Frank Sinatra was actually almost cast as the Joker in 1960s Batman tv series but they casted Caesar Romero instead.
I bet you never knew the song until the movie
Dark ass musician
The joke is that Bruce is a loner, an orphan, and an outcast just like the Joker. Arthur expects Bruce to become just like him, a crazed maniac.
Ironically, we know that Bruce will be everything the Joker is not. Jokes on him.
fraz wearing a bat suit and fighting criminals at night is hardly a normal thing to do
Aiden Scott True but arguably better than drugs and suicide
The Joke is he created the Batman.
The Connection he almost had with Bruce as his Brother expecting to be Thomas Wayne's another son too fell apart, but because of what he did the riot, the chaos and how it was the reason Bruce's parents were dead in the alley all because of him.
He finally has the purpose in his life and a connection with Bruce as his Arch nemesis.
That's the Big Joke.
This is present times.
He knows Bruce is Batman and others don't which is why they wouldn't get it.
How does he know that though?
@@Bloodhurl67 Ofc the Wayne Parent's death is a Big deal especially Gotham.
Possibly by news or anyone who talked about it.
The jokes on all of us.
damnnnnnn
Nonsense. This is his real story
Hence why it was made
@@MaoistJohnWick actually his real story is a bunch of a lies thats how the original creator of him made it. Everytime the joker gives you a backstory its a lie because deep down he hides the truth. However in every story there is some hints of truth. This version however could be true since its made by someone completely different however you wont know one way or the other until the creator says so.
he knows life is a tragedy and it's tragically funny.
Laffy Viret but he realizes that his life is a joke...........with a big punchline.
you should tell him the pagliacci joke, pretty sure he'd laugh so hard
Todd Phillips said this was the only time he was really laughing, all other times were part of his act. The reason it flashes to Bruce in the alley is that this scene (with the doctor) is this takes place in the future where Batman is out there and he made him.
@@soulja5252 what kind?
Who knows.
Edd D I buy this over anything else
0:54 bruce standing in front of his dead parents and joker laughing right after that is an iconic scene omfg..
Edit: thanks for the likes guys🤘🏼
It means this scene is taken place in future where Bruce is now Batman and has sent Joker to Arkham..
He is laughing, because, joker is no longer a man, it's a phenomenon..

@@RisingDawn12 Pretty dull and arrogant for being a Lime green colour. I'd say you're more like, red and orange.
Arthur was actually a pretty decent guy. Never was malicious toward anyone who showed him respect and basic human decency. He just burned down the village to feel it's warmth
Did you miss the part in this scene where he leaves the room with the nurses blood on his foot prints?
