How to select the right type of sandpaper for polishing metal - Evan's Detailing and Polishing

- In this video I break down the different types of sandpaper and why sometimes you can end up with different results with the same grits but in different brands of sandpaper. All the sand paper we use is available on goshineon.com/shop and designed specifically for aluminum and stainless. You can also find the links below for the sanders and grinders we use. But understand that some brands will break down too fast or stay rigid too long if they aren't designed for aluminum or stainless. Sandpaper can play a huge role in how well your finish is on the metal you are working on. I hope these videos help and thanks for watching.
If you are looking for grinders or cords and stuff we use in the shop that aren’t available on goshineon.com all of these products used in this video are available at www.amazon.com/shop/metalpoli... or by the individual links.

I've noticed that with the different brands of paper that I've used and I bought different brands to see what I liked best but I thought I was noticing that they were different grits but I wasn't sure . Grate video👍🤯
You were spot on. Thanks for watching.
I just bought my paper from your online store.....problem solved. Thanks for taking the guesswork out of it. I am grateful to have come across your channel
Perfect! Thanks for checking out our store and purchasing. I am happy you found this video helpful.
Greetings, could you help me which one should I buy? thank you
@@OscarMartinez-fg8re I bought the 320/400/600 sanding kit from Evan's goshineon store. Really nice folks and filled my order quickly.
Thanks for confirming what I had been thinking

Certainly you’re the best in that business!
Definitely not the best but I try to give back as much as I can. Thank you for watching and commenting. Means a lot.

Nice 👌 very good info 👍
Glad you liked it
Thanks Evan 👋
Glad to help.
Omg!!! Thank you!!! First you should be a comedian, your hilarious 😂. Second you finally answered all the questions I've been struggling with for decades.
I often noticed that two different kinds of sandpaper, even though the same grit, were sooooo bloody different.
Your video explained pretty much everything, and I learned a lot thank you. I have been sanding wood and metal since I was a kid. I'd get so frustrated with the grit of one Piece of sandpaper not matching the other. I learned the feel and went on my gut instint. Never knowing if I was about to screw my project up and always doubting myself.
Now I finally realized I was doing the right thing. Plus I didn't actually ever think about what the sandpaper was made of .
Nice to know I was right for once.
Well some might disagree lol, I am really happy that you found this video helpful. Thanks for watching.
Great info...thank you
Thank you for watching.
Good and helpful. !
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate that.
I tend to stick with 3M sandpaper just for consistency. Easy to find, and they have a wide variety to choose from. Though for me thats regular square/rectangle sheets for hand sanding. Still yet to buy an adapter or tool for the discs, and no grinder yet for buffs.
Depending on the condition of the surface, I'll sand from 120 all the way up to 2000 grit or beyond. Plus when I sand I use WD-40 to lube the surface and build up a slurry. Wipe it all down till cloths come off it clean. Then finish off with some hand polish or buffing wheel on my drill. It's certainly shiny, but nowhere near a mirror, though I can see my reflection somewhat in the end. Just making due with what I've got until I can acquire some better tools. Certainly getting some exercise in when I do polish hehe.
I bet that is a long tough day and sore arms for sure. LOL If I didn't have tools or the ability I am uncertain I would love polishing as much as I do. You have far more patience and will to polish than I do. I love watching the transformation and seeing the end result. Thank you for watching and commenting. For me personally 3m is too expensive and requires more sanding than I like to do. The stuff I use breaks down the way I want it to in the time I want to achieve a polishable surface. I never sand above 600 and can achieve a true mirror after that with the buffs and compounds.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing It'll certainly take me some practice but my results are turning out pretty good. Eventually I'll invest in some power tools specific to the task, as they'd be handy elsewhere too. Since I'm not running a business and just shining my own equipment it's good exercise for now. A bit more practice and experimentation on my company equipment, and I may just turn it into a side gig during layover time. It's enjoyable taking matte white aluminum and getting it to the point my goofy fuzzy face is looking back at me.
What techinique would you use to polish the inside of a 4" or 6" pipe. It's cut a 1" in length. thanks for your video and i will be getting some of your paper for sure.
Thank you 💯😎
You bet, thanks for watching!
great video ...
Glad you enjoyed it
I time myself per rim. That helps alot
Always important to find a way that helps you improve, not everything works for everyone. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
When sanding aluminum, is there a trick to stop gumming up the sandpaper? I know you can put some water to cool down, but for vertical surfaces thats not always practical...

I am glad to help Cody. Thank you for all your support buddy.
Great video. What paper do you find stands up well to hardened steel? If you have any recommendations for that I would really appreciate it.
Nothing really holds up to hardened steel. zirconium paper is the closest for hardened steel but it chews up everything.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing yeah. It sure does chew up abrasive. I'll definitely go for zirconia when I can. Thanks.
Hey evan, i was wondering if you sell any products to polish glass to get hard water stains out? Thanks for the videos
You can check out all of our products at goshineon.com. We do have some that are used for that purpose.
which product or brand name do you use?
Great video thanks Evan, is it Mirka Abranet your using? I would just buy from you but I'm in Australia, so looking for the identical product here, any advice appreciated
We use a special type of Mirka but not sure what blend exactly. I know it is hard to get.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing Thanks mate, you need to send internationally! 1 more question if I may, the sander I'm looking at comes in 2.5mm orbit or 5mm orbit, which gives a better result when polishing alu? is the 2.5mm too fine?or doesn't really matter? actually thats 3 questions sorry
I’m 15 and I started polishing a while ago, I rent use of a tire machine from a local mechanic shop to make wheels faster it takes me about a half hour on a 22.5 but it takes me 3-4 days to do a cattle guard is there a way to speed those up
Sorry for the late response. I am sure you have found a technique to make those easier by now. They are not fun but look so good when they are finished. Thank you for watching.
How to keep sand papers longer from bukling specially 18x12 square buff used in OBS18 floor sanding machine
No idea to be honest. We sand and polish metal. I am unfamiliar with floor sanding or polishing.
hey Even, thanks very much for the straight forward info on polishing. still though, i'm having problems that i don't see you and others having in there vids. hope you can shed some light if you have time.
i've sanded my alum up to 5000 grit with a good DA sander, then as i try to cut w/brown (tripoli/compund) the surface turns dark grey to black and resists any further polishing. even after i rake the wheel and clean the surface with alcohol. my buffer maxes out at 3500rpm if you think thats' the problem. tried many times and the area iv'e sanded remains cloudy and resists polishing. any help is greatly appreciated. cheers.
@C10 Syndicate Aluminum is The Devil's Tinfoil. apparently, there's a right and wrong way to sand how is that possible? it's taken me 2 days with 3 grades of air buff wheels to get out the cloudiness.(some cloudiness remains) please, if you can describe how a sanding technique can cause this, i'd be eternally grateful.
I never sand up past 600 grit. 5,000 grit is too smooth. It actually has closed the pores and won't allow most buffs or compounds to get in and do what they do best. Sanding that smooth is counter productive and will actually make the finish worse. I will make a video about this soon. Thanks for the great idea. Brown tripoli cuts at 480 grit in most brands. Since youve sanded to 5,000 you are at a level softer than most hand polishes. Most hand polishes are considered 4,000 grit. I hope this makes sense.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing makes complete sense Evan. on my next piece i'l leave it at 400 to 600 grit before polishing.
another thing worth mentioning; i was lead to believe that a high shine could be achieved by using Nuvite/nushine 11f compound and a wool buffing wheel. which i of course spent many hrs trying to get a shine with. could there be a buildup of this stuff that's preventing the tripoli and air buffs from doing their job? also wanted to say how thankful i am for your time. it's obvious you're a busy hardworking guy and your responses mean a lot to us. Victory over The Devil's Tinfoil!
I use the same products you use. But in polishing time is money.
Always time is money.
I'm going to buy polishing products from your store today
That is awesome bud. Hope you like them.
As a job shop owner i buy cheap tools all the time, sandpaper is not one of them. As you said, its far more worthwhile to save 3x the time rather than 3x the cost of sandpaper.
Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Thank you!
Hey, I recently bought a renegade aluminum mini kit to do my oem GM SS wheels, I removed clear, sanded them with 400 then 600 is that enough sanding to use the airway kit or should I sand to a finer grit?,I have plenty of 3m paper and discs ranging from 220-3000 but would rather not spend time sanding if it’s not needed, also I’m using a dewalt variable rotary polisher 600-3500 rpm for the airways, sanding was done with a drill and by hand. Thanks
Those wheels are an absolute pain to polish. Getting the clear coat off is a bear. I recommend starting at 180-220-320-400-600 then buffing. I no longer use renegade nor do I know what is in their mini kit but as long as there is a stiff buff and brown compound around you can usually cut out 600 grit scratches. If their stuff has changed at all you may need to go to 800 but not sure the quality of their stuff as I don't use it. Hope this helps.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing yep the clear was a pain in the ass took 5 hits with aircraft remover and pressure washer each, I hit them with the orange wheel with brown bar I kinda see the sanding lines so I’ll go back with 800, I ended up finding a Milwaukee 6000rpm grinder in my basement so switched to that from my dewalt varible, thanks for the reply and appreciate that videos👍
@@wildingarage2003 Glad to help, Well done.
greetings evan, in one of the answers you say that you do not know the renegade material, if I have seen the videos of you working with them, sorry if I'm wrong
What is the comm/technical name name of 18x12 sand paper which is used for OBS 18 square buff floor sander.?
No idea to be honest. We sand and polish metal. I am unfamiliar with floor sanding or polishing.
Gold Stearate Aluminum Oxide
Hey Evan, what's up man? Please help me out, I recently started polishing my aluminum engine cases from my motorcycle, started sanding with 320 - 400 - 800 - 1k - 2k, then started polishing with the zephyr kit, after the first step with the yellow wheel I got it looking awesome but I got like a black burn-like stain on my otherwise mirror like case, any idea on how to get rid of it? Dunno it I should go back to sanding or what. Please help! Thanks in advance.
Buy an orange wheel, sand to 400 use orange/brown then yellow/ green and last white /blue
I never sand above 600 grit. Sanding too smooth can make polishing more difficult. I'll have a video out on this soon. I would sand back to 600 and repolish.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing thanks for the reply man! Gotcha will resand up to 600 and repolish, other than two black, burn like, spots thing shines like a mirror. Big fan btw.
Hhhhh man the way you look, you deserve a "like" 👍😅
He needs a 120 grit 😁
Appreciate it
How to select the right rotary or da tool?? I wanna do my wheels today but idk what tools to buy
I have a video on this as well. I prefer tight pattern orbital for finish work and loose pattern for heavy material removal.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing okay, I’ve been so busy haven’t had time to watch so many videos, what would you recommend for a full wheel project? Idk what kind of metal they are (steel aluminum etc) but they’re painter white on a 73 ford truck. Paint stripper didn’t help so I’m thinking of just sanding it off and polish till it’s like chrome
@@plshelp2906 If they are painted white they are likely powdercoated steel and if you did manage to polish them they would rust with just humidity or touching with your hand. Old wheels aren't usually aluminum.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing ohh, so would the best way to get them shiny/chrome be to paint it ?
What are your thoughts on mirka basecut discs?
They are just fine if that is your preference.
@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing they seem to last the longest outbof everything have tried but I prefer mirka gold for my 400

Is DC super shine sandpaper any good?
Never used it. Dennis knows his stuff so I would make the assumption it is good but I've never used it. I use Mirka from goshineon.com/shop.
What do you use?
I use Mirka Special blend. We sell it on goshineon.com/shop. It costs around 50 cents a sheet and comes in boxes of 50 sheets.
Have you ever tried 3m sandpaper
I have. I feel it wears out just as fast as the stuff I use now and the stuff I use is a fraction of the price. Thanks for watching and commenting.
