I had to buy some very pitted aluminum semi wheels because new ones that would fit were outrageous. These tutorials have helped me make them look like a million bucks ....thanks so much!

You have to be careful sanding aluminum, aluminum dust is extremely flammable if it mixes with other metals and water it will start a fire and a small confined space can such a a trash can or even a small room can potentially just be a bomb
I just did a junk yard wheel today to practice. I used a da and started at 80 grit! After I acid washed the wheel. Worked it all the way to 220. Then heavy cut and then polish. Took 4 hours for both sides of one wheel. After seeing this, I need to get the orbital sander. Looks like it took way more off way faster then the DA. The heavy pitting on the bolt holes took forever. Thanks for sharing sir. U make it look easy.

Hi, I am learning a lot. I think this rotary machine is effective because it can perform surface treatment quickly. and the DA machine is more suitable for finishing. It is interesting that the processing effect greatly differs depending on how the machine is used.

Just found your channel and subbed. Well done. I'm restoring a 75 Honda 360T with pitted chrome and runs on the alum. Been using 0000 on the alum and chrome that has surface rust and I'm just getting the chrome down to a beautiful shine and polish. The lower fork's on the bike and the engine fins, I'm using a drill with compound and a grinding (cloth) wheel. I'd like to use my Makita but never have tried it. Enjoy your post

Sand blasting makes the metal really hot and in my opinion it makes it really tough to polish. It is almost like it burns the metal. I avoid sand blasted parts.
Have you ever tried forced rotation/gear driven dual action? Like a Flex 3401 or Rotex? What are your thoughts on it for metal sanding? Thanks for the video, metal polishing is hard dirty work. You guys earn every dollar. I do more paint correction, but I polish the odd wheel, toolbox, etc.. I bought a Renegade metal kit and its worked well, the end result is very satisfying, but its a workout! 👍👌✌

Is sanding necessary for just oxidation? What would happen if you used an orange wheel and brown compound from the start? I'm doing an old pontoon boat and want the toons shiny but not taking it to a show.
@@ShootingG1 well I found that sanding is totally necessary with bad oxidation and probly the most important step. Just gotta be really careful with grit.

Do you ever use a interference pad between the paper and backing plate? Just curious if it would float over the defects vs knocking them down. Thank you for your time.
I don't. I'm not a big fan of the interface pad and the finish it leaves. But I do know many people that use them and they do a great job. It is just my personal preference not to use it.
If you have heavy pitting or alot of material to knock off then you want the pad alone if you have say a heavy contour or rounded piece it helps to have some give.
Boats are usually pretty thin. Unless you mean a pontoon. If it is a thin side boat then I recommend just doing a da. Lowest grit gets it smooth and the other grits working up make it polishable. If it is a pontoon then you can just do these steps from the video. Thanks for watching and supporting.

Sadly that clear has to be sanded off. Check out my how to strip and repolish a durabrite video. That will give you the best info. Great video! My question is this. I have a snare drum made of aluminum I want to smooth and polish. The problem is it has chrome plating on it that is pitting and peeling off. It looks really bad. Any suggestions on how to remove the chrome plating so I can polish the aluminum underneath???

I wanna know why the new husky pneumatic rotary sander has Diablo pads that don't stick. I thought getting a pneumatic would be like my crap hyper tough velcro style and it's not. Start sanding and the Diablo pads just fly right off, that's after peeling the backing off to "stick" to the pad lol
I only use velcro. Working in a dust filled dirty shop doesn't do well with sticky back sand paper. Plus diablo paper is less than ideal for aluminum. It can be used on it as that is what it says on the box. But it isn't made for working on aluminum that needs polished.

Can you comment on the Alcoa coating on these wheels ? Can I cut and polish the coating they use or do I need to sand the coating off ? These are 5 yr old never polished before and pretty dull. If you're sanding off the coating, what grit are you using ? Ive experimented with 150grit on a DA/orbital and it's not effective. Polishing the coating turns it yellow from the heat.
You have to sand the coating off. You can't just buff it. It will burn and turn black. Check out my video on how to sand and polish a durabrite. That should help answer a lot of your questions.

Ever do tool boxes? Is it difficult to try and sand in between the crevices on diamond plate?

Do you wet sand? I’m just starting to do pontoons on boats and I am hearing I should wet sand then cut then polish.
I personally never wet sand. Getting the aluminum wet and gummy makes a lot harder work for me to polish so I avoid it. But that is me personally.
On DEWALT DWP849X variable speed polisher what will be the rpm for sanding?

Is it possible to sand too much? If you used too low of a sand like a 150,200 ? Would you have to do that to the whole wheel to make it even ?

Quick question. What do you use to protect your final finish, after your final step with an airway?
The compound is filled with greases and waxes. The compound seals it up.

Likely moved to fast with the sander or didn't wear the paper in or got something stuck in the paper.

I’ve thought about it only issue is if I sell one dvd what stops anyone from ripping it and posting it? No way to protect the content.

Harbor freight body panel stand.
I would get about 2 or 3 2x4's and some screws to make an X buck, top off with a moving blanket. Probably a lot cheaper.

Usually 1800-2200 rpm depending on the grit and what I'm working on.
