As someone who raced the 2022 TD, keep in mind YOU ARE NOT SOFIANE. YOU WILL NEED MORE STUFF! I saw slow folks like me rolling with a minimalist bivvy and trying to get 8 hours of sleep a night. If you're not covering his distance you will need more food/water/etc between resupply points.
That is very true. Thanks for stating it 👍
dude, it is amazing how far not much of equipment and a lot of sheer will takes you
I like the fact you wear value for money brands lime Decathlon and DHB unlike many poseurs who insist on the fancy expensive brands like Castelli and Rapha. Clothes not maketh the man.
I'm happy to show you don't need to spend crazy money on kit and gear to have fun and perform
The kit really brings home the point the GDMR is one of the most extreme athletic events out there. I have worked in parts of the Great Divide Basin and not see another vehicle or person for day, or two, to provide some perspective. I am also glad you did not rely on luck this year either.
What an awesome athlete and insane accomplishment, just got done watching your dot on the SRMR congrats on another win! You’re a true inspiration to a lot of people, myself included!
Great video Sofiane and loved to see how far you got with so little. Congratulations again on your successful ride. you’re a star!
Thanks for taking the time to post. Interesting how a true racer travels!
Thanks Sofiane. Such a great insight for us mere mortals!
Merci pour cette vidéo, Sofiane! Minimalisme au maximum. J'embarque plus de matos pour une sortie de 2h dans mon bled... Impressionnant! Encore bravo à toi!
Dude… your insane!! Respect the legendary effort, your a cycling machine
Thanks Sofiane, It's great to see everything all used, dirty or beat up, that way we know you do really use all this!!
Only exception is the leg warmers. Cause I forgot them in Colorado 😅
Glad I found your YT channel. You’re a mad lad.
Saw you 9:40 pm before silverthorne Colorado and Breckenridge. Had lights & water but understanding your were in zone rode right by. No worries, was great to witness you my home on GDMBR.
Great rundown of your gear!
Thanks for sharing this!…you’re an inspiration for me in ways besides cycling.
Thanks man
Very impressive seeing a full toothbrush! Would not expect anything less of you.
We can't compromise on dental hygiene!
thanks sofiane for sharing your setup with us. this was really helpful to me. i'm preparing for my first bikepacking race ever
Arrange for someone to meet you at the end of the 1st day - and then let them know by midday if you've forgotten anything you need AND/or you can offload anything you brought but don't need.
@@br5380 Most of these races are unsupported. That would very clearly be outside support.
@@firsthippy ok, but could still ditch stuff (next to their car etc) 👍
@@br5380 Depending on the event this might also be against the rules. TCR for example expect you to basically finish with what you started with. In some races (eg. TransAm) I've posted stuff I wasn't using to the finish line. But people often ditch stuff and then need it later so it can be a risky move. :)
Thank you for the video!
Thank you for the list Hermano 🙂
Great video. Saw that this was the 3rd video you made... Hopefully we will get more.
Yes that's the plan. The channel is just getting started
Thanks! so useful
Thanks pour tous les bons tuyaux 👌🏾🙏🏽👊🏽😉👏🏽
it is absolutely amazing. Thank you for your tips. This Video had halpt me a pear times! I hope wie see us in a pear Jahrs at a Race!! Good Luck out auf Germany!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the info on butt repairs, this sort of stuff is often overlooked. Never seen that cream before - I use Sudocrem, which is for babies with nappy trouble but solves a whole myriad of other problems too!
sudocrem is not correct for this purpose - it's for babies who have dry skin, so better to use choais buttr before and something like Avene Cicalfate every night.
I use zinc lotion. Its very cheap and you get it in any drug store (at least in germany)
Is that like an antibacterial ointment?
Thanks very much!
merci toujours cool de voir le matos des Grands!^^
The simple narrative "Take these because you never know when you'll need them and they're small" may be more helpful with a short explanation of what could happen and how it could happen, and why you'd need it. E.g., valve cores. After plugging a big leak in a tire and losing a lot of sealant, you remove a valve core to top up sealant in a tubeless tire through the valve stem, and you drop the valve core in bad light and can't find it. So, take a spare." Great video, thanks for doing it. You're a champion.
That's a very good example of what can go wrong. I also lost a core to one of those shitty lezyne flex hose when trying to reinflate a tire. In any case, always carry one.
This just shines light on how badass you are. And maybe crazy too 😂 but seriously either way cool.
It looks crazy but deep down it's very rational 😃
I figured out after a few trips that my multi-tool had a slot in the chain breaker tab that fit valve cores, so I removed the standalone core remover from my tool kit. It was notably the only thing I have ever purposefully gotten rid of from the repair kit.
I have the same but I feel the little plastic thingy is quicker and easier to use
Excellent video. Thanks for all the details, and congratulations on your successful tour.
Your a beast thanks for sharing
Merci pour toutes ces bonnes infos :)
Avec plaisir 😉
Really helpful video for us amateur bikepackers. Doing a 1000km mixed terrain race in September and deciding what to pack is not easy. Thanks for doing this.
Glad I could help
mr,Wow- awesome maserpiece. 😎
Real inspiring, Sofiane! Well done! What did you do for hydration? Did you have a bladder in that frame bag, or stick with bottles?
Yes bladder in frame bag
Decathlon gear: perhaps not the best, but entirely adequate and certainly the best value.
It's sometimes not worth spending the extra money
Ultralight for the win! And I would love to hear about your nutrition on the race!
Just regular gas station resupplies
@@sofianeshl Dang! 80% carbs or so?
@@sean9820 More or less so, yes
can you do a bike check video when you get your bike back? thanks!! WELL DONE!!
Awesome! You are a legend! Do you have a video about your bike? Thanks
There's no video about my setup. But I could do one about my SRMR build
You really got a minimalistic setup, I look more like a pack mule
I could maybe do this for an overnighter. How you survive a week of cycling in the same shorts is beyond me
That's two weeks actually 😅
What an event, and achievement! Can you tell us which brand of bags you chose, and why?
I chose Miss Grape as I find them very durable
Nice setup!
You can move to solid toothpath. More compact, lightweight and 40 g of it last me for 4 months.
yeah it's something I thought about. Just need to source it
@@sofianeshl Dans les magasins bio à Paris. J'ai trouvé le mien chez biocoop
@@scaro75013 Cool, merci du tuyau !
@@sofianeshl you can make it out of normal toothpaste by drying it.
@@oliverd9215 good to know!!
Thanks for sharing. No shoe covers to keep feet dry/warm? Cool tip with the buff - I don’t see that in the list? Shorten that toothbrush handle with loppers maybe?
I don't think shoe covers would do anything to keep your feet dry when you have to push your bike across knee deep puddles 😁
@@sofianeshl Haha true, but also not the point. You've got rain gear for every other part of your body. Shoe covers keep your feet warm and dry when it's raining or super cold - you are an expert, you know this of course, so I was wondering *how* you make do without what has been a key piece of gear for me in events like this.
@@mattalbee Shoe covers are bulky and don't really do anything to keep your core warm. They're ineffective in a variety of situation, including walking on the snow for hours. Cold / wet feet are unpleasant but they won't keep you from moving forward. Hypothermia will. That's why I won't compromise with rain/cold weather gear when it comes to upper body.
@@sofianeshl Thanks for explaining your thinking. Neoprene ones are bulky, it's true, so I only carry lightweight shell-like ones. Not necessary for you with your world-beating tolerance for discomfort, clearly. ;-)
Thanks for this useful information. I´d like to add something: Payment methods. Money (cash), different credit/debit cards.
I had two credit cards and 20$ in cash
Any chance you know the specific brand of your 4 port charger? I'm looking for a new one and yours looks nice and small. Thanks for the great video and congrats on your win!
I think the brand is Beikell, but I'm not 100% sure
Great Setup. What chainlube are you using? Wax based? Greetings from Vienna
I don't believe in wax. Also I don't systematically use the same lube. At the moment I'm using Finish line wet lube, I think
It's really impressive how minimal you go! Do you lock your bike when you go shopping or over night? Which lock do you use?
Nope. I never carry a lock when I'm bikepacking
@@sofianeshlin sketchy areas what is your suggestion? Bring bike inside or ask salesperson you watch for you?
Did you do something similar for the SRMR last year, or will you? Cheers!
I'll have the same kit for SRMR. I'm just adding a sleeping bag, a mattress and a bivy.
What kind of shoes did your wear?
How did you handle hydration?
SHOES ARE LISTED IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE VIDEO
Lol the lip balm, cleaned out my bike bags and found half a dozen blistex tubs. I get anxious when I don’t have lip balm 😂
I would die out there wihout lip balm
@@sofianeshl same 🤣
Anything you'd leave out or add if you were to race it again?
Spare brake pads were not necessary as I was running sintered pads.
Cicalfate acheté ... on va tester ca ;-) merci
Tu m'en diras des nouvelles
Thanks for the video. How did you carry water and how much?
I had a 2L water bladder in my frame bag
@@sofianeshldo your have a hose coming out of your frame bag, how do you mount it?
I saw a video of how Ted King used a magnet for his hose and it worked great as long as the magnets don't fall off.
Hi. Do you wear any helmet headlamp/light? thx for replay
No I don't
I'm curious if you had a dynamo hub? If so, why did you have two large cache batteries?
I only use my dynamo hub to power my front light. The power banks are for my phone and GPS.
@@sofianeshl Есть пространство для манёвра =) Is this a conscious choice or just the circumstances? I believe that it is conscious, but then it would be interesting to know why.
I first attempted the TD in 2012, didn’t finish, tried again in 2015 and quit halfway.. not easy.. anyways I am going back next year, I just wanted to comment because those tan lines.. I had those tan lines, they suck
I tend to forget about them but then there's always someone to remind me, haha!
Was your jacket the DHB trail one?
Yes
I'm curious about the use of the Avene Cicalfate. (right now my butt looks a baboon's after only 3 days of racing 😃). Can it be used in a preventive way or just to cure the problem when it occurs?
It can only be used once the damage is done. It just speeds up the healing process.
@@sofianeshl Ok, thanks a lot. Will try to combine it with something preventive than 👍
What lights do you use?
Supernova all the way
you da man. wanna make to have at least what you got as a base set up.
Don't hesitate to expand on it
@@sofianeshl le emergency bicycle Comme sleep system est pas Mal extreme, ya pas de doute
Is that a SOL Escape bivy or the Thermolite one? I have the latter and it's incredibly warm for the weight-not very breathable though! 🥵🥵🥵🥵Also shout out to Decathlon!-they make some cracking stuff for the money.👍
It's the Sol escape lite
Which bike did you use?
Vitus rapide crx
No pillow or umbrella?
I had a collapsible bottle that doubled as a pillow
How am I carrying more stuff for a 3 day ride than you for the Divide hahahahah
Thanks for the video, really useful a d interesting as always
MAYBE you're carrying too much 😂
@@sofianeshl for sure haha. Main differences are: a change of cycling clothes, a tent & sleeping system, food and cooking stove. As you said, you're able to just carry on until you find a place to sleep which is something I just can't do/wouldn't want to do in a non race situation
@@sofianeshl well done on your fantastic win btw
@@Al_Fresco Maybe you're bike touring then, not for the race.
@@Ignash yes captain obvious, I think that's what I said above?
There's plenty of people, even in races, that carry more stuff than Sofiane. I think it says a lot about what he's able to accomplish....not necessarily that everyone else is on a pleasure ride
Merci pour le tip de la crème AVENE ; je vais m’empresser d’essayer ça sur mon 🍑😄
De rien 😁
How much did you weigh? Meaning body weight
I started around 73kg
what Electrolytes do you use?
Just random ones. It's just basically salt and some other minerals. No need to get fancy.
@@sofianeshl True, but I have definitely found that flavored varieties encourage me to drink much more than water flavored ones! But I agree, buy the cheapest one because it's not rocket science.
I'd like to show you my bike, but it's not here. ..lol
J’ai le même dentifrice 😊
Je ne sais pas s'il a activement participé à la victoire 🤣
why flatbars?
They're more comfortable
How about the food?
I ate it all. Sorry
Frame bag….. is what he means
@@sofianeshl what food do you bring? Nuts and dried fruit?
Noodles? Do you bring stove to heat water? Or just eat in stopovers?
I resupply in gas station. Eating sandwiches, candy bars and peanuts
@@sofianeshl Merci mon ami
HI Sofiane, Bravo t'es un vrai champion! - I got to ask cos i am kind of freaking out about it but what is your mental state/preparation for bears, don't see you listing Bear spray, whistle...let's say you meet a grizzly then what? Dis-moi, dis-moi :)
Je me suis pas spécialement équipé ou préparé pour faire face aux ours. Ça ne veut pas dire qu'il faut suivre mon exemple
@@sofianeshl Merci Sofiane t'es une vraie bête, je crois que tu leur fais peur :)
No sleeping bag- quilt? Sleep in all your clothes?
No sleeping bag
@@sofianeshl You are stout. :) Great job!!!!
Shoes?
Northwave Xtrail plus
@@sofianeshl thanks Sofiane and great riding as always
Wow... but really no first aid Kit? No bear spray? Tough call! Tough call.
About first aid kit. I figure there's two situation when you crash. First one is you can keep riding. And then you'll just ride to where you can get cared for. Second situation is you're in such a bad shape you can't keep riding. And then a first aid kit is not gonna make a difference.
@@sofianeshl Well, not so sure I share your thought about it.. It's compulsory in SRMR though! :) CU in Osh, so stoked!
@@sofianeshl I have no problem with this mindset, but I will say there's relatively little weight penalty to carrying a bare minimum kit in case things go really bad. I always ride with a tiny kit - CAT tourniquet x1, pressure dressing of some sort, a small pack of hemostatic z-fold gauze, a coban roll, and a pair of latex gloves. You already have needle and thread and the multitool, so that kind of kit is an addition that helps to buy time when things are bad and you're waiting for rescue. Of course, you're not likely to ever use anything, but in a bleeding situation where time is incredibly important, a kit like this will make a massive difference.
So... sponsored by DHB
It's actually spelled dhb
