The most brutal MTB race in Europe
The Highland Trail 550 is the oldest bikepacking race in Europe and arguably the hardest. With harsh weather, unforgiving terrain, numerous technical downhill, countless long hike-a-bikes, it is a test of character for anyone who is bold enough to sign up. The reward is gorgeous landscapes in a remote and wild part of that populous continent that is Europe.
The course and conditions make it super challenging, but on top of that, I had to deal with a string of bad luck that made it even harder.
Follow along to see what it takes to complete this legendary race.

Offroad bikepacking in Portugal🇵🇹 (theGOATS)

After a successful 2023 season, I decided to take part in one last race for the fun of it. I was to mentally and physically tired to give it a proper go, but I was determined to have some fun. And that's how I started the GOATS. While fun was definitely had, that course proved to be a big challenge and not easy to complete. I discovered Portugal and its limitless gravel possibilities and I was ...

Last year, Fanny and I went for a month long holiday, riding our bikes in Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily. Part 3 takes you with us to colorful Sicily. It was our third time on this island and though we globally had a good time. We were shocked by the amount of trash on the side of the road. Highlights included visiting the antic city of Syracuse and climbing Etna twice in a day. Stage 3 : 840km /...

After two back to back wins on the Silk road mountain race, I went back to Kyrgyzstan to secure an unlikely third win in three participation. With the densest field ever seen in a bikepacking race, I had to be both lucky and at the top of my game. Little did I know, luck would not be in my favor this time... *Footage* Sofiane Sehili *Editing* Fanny Bensussan *Music* from Epidemic Sound *Thumbna...

The Bright Midnight is a bikepacking event which shows you a lot of what Norway has to offer. The route goes through highlands - endless gravel roads in the mountains, connecting all those summer farms up there, then leads to the fjords, over some mountain passes, and eventually turning back into highlands through some national parks. It totals about 1.000km with 16.000m of elevation gain. Firs...

Très belle images. Merci pour ce partage !
The axle screw torque messing with the bearings sideload/alignement may tell the hub is deffective. (Missing an internal spacer?)
Its ok not to win. Thanks for the video 👍
Well done. Super video. Thanks
2:20 I usually come to this opinion in every race 20 seconds later after it started. ^^
Legend
Fabulous insights as to what’s involved. Thanks for sharing @fanny nice edits
Simplement Bravo!!!
Inspirational as always! I watch a lot of bikepacking/self supported races an the feet play up a lot of the time when the weather turns. When I go on a bikepacking trip (not racing) I always carry a pair of waterproof socks like sealskins, I would probably add a second pair riding in Scotland, they saved my feet more than once.
🐐
Great footage, tough game that. Some questions please: 1). Restrap harness for carrying the bike? 2). Any midge protection. If so, did it work? 3). Reason for no upholstery needle and thread for the tyre? 4). Fully waterproof socks for rivers and bog crossings? I can see you’d end up with trench foot if you didn’t take care like you did. Thank you for the video, I knew this was tough, this shows how tough. Shame about the freehub. Congratulations on the finish. Tim
👍👍👍
tremendous effort, well done. loved your letting us know how you felt throughout.
Bravo soufian😊
Congratulations! for completing
What an area, what a race. Thanks for giving that insight!
Hey Sofiane did you run tyre inserts after this experience (the pinch flat)? or do you think there isnt that much benefit?
I never ran inserts. You can run them if you'd like to ride with really low pressure and go downhill very fast.
'If you want to get successful in business or in life, you gonna want it bad." Thank you.
Fenders are great, if you get good ones !
Still the best thumb nail! Hotel room clean robe and your bike!

Salutations
You are the real C0wb0y (Clint eastwo0d) of the cyclist W0rld ❤PAKISTAN
Hi Sofiane, thanks for your videos, very informative. I am doing badlands this year, moving on to Atlas and Silk. I have a gravel bike that allows 53mm tyres and has Rockshock 40mm suspension at the front. Do you think this would be fine for Atlas and Silk from your experience ?
Yeah I think it could do the trick
Unbelievable resiliency and strength of mind. What wheels did you have and do you think the accident caused the issue. Did the place you visit have the spokes as well as nipples ?
❤RESPECT t0 you Sir, But how can i start long and elite level Cycling I am a Ordinary Cyclist... Please Guide me Sir,❤
I enjoyed your account of the race, well done.
How much did you weigh? Meaning body weight
I started around 73kg
hi Sofiane, it's nice to see somebody that states upfront that his main goal is to win, some are afraid to tell that. your endurance is beyond human. I have a question for you and all ultraracers: don't you think all that sleep deprivation might be detrimental in the long run, just wondering, I'm not a doctor. ciao.
It's definitely a possibility. I have to admit that I'm afraid to research it
No Burzum for the whole video 😢
Unforgivable! 🤬
Merci 🤗
you're the best, I like your video, the passion is so strong
Sh3t food, excellent entertainment. Love your adventures
Hope you're talking about snickers and not about Portuguese gastronomy 😅
Where did the wheel went? Ou est parti la roue? Did she win?
Thanks for that... The Goat...
The snickers 😂 yupp that one had an adventure 🙌 ride on 💗
He's a true survivor
Bike & Chill!
Grande Sofiane! You might not have won the race this time but sure I'll give you a price for the best entertainer! 🎉🎉
That's the most important prize 🏆 for me
Good morning Sofiane, I really enjoyed this video (as I'm sure many others have/ will). This type of personal video regarding participation/ planning/ motivation for events is always more interesting and your unprepared, off the cuff commentary much more meaningful than a polished/ prepared "look how great I am" video. Shooting everything on the Go-Pro gives it a more personal feeling too, as the footage is not too polished, unlike some content where everything is filmed on a DSLR camera. I hope you will continue to make this type of personal account of your experiences in events and bicycle travel in general. I also enjoyed your footage on "holiday" (too many kms a day for me) with Fanny, as it was in the same vein. I think those of us that follow/ participate in endurance events appreciate the highs and lows and thought processes that go on when you spend a lot of time on your own, making your own decisions. Certainly your compatriot with the broken handlebars and your poor gearing decision were a demonstration of "you have to piss with the c*ck you got" mentality to just get it done. I really laughed (with you, not at you) at 5.55 when you were allowing your thoughts to form and speaking slowly to the camera, whilst behind you the windmill can be seen slowly rotating behind your head, like the cogs turning in your brain. Maybe it's just me, but I find that kind of accidental stuff very funny. Thank you for the video, Tim
Haha, funny. I didn't spot that. That day was the hardest and these climbs near the windmills were horrendous
