- After 4 months of preparation I finally made my way to Banff, Canada to kick off the 2023 Tour Divide. I'd put everything I could into the preparation but was missing the most crucial aspect which was experience. With only a couple of ultra bike races under my belt entering the Divide with riding fast was an ambitious move but one I certainly don't regret!!
This video follows the first half (2,200km) of this incredible route to the point of Wamsutter, Wymoing. Keep an eye out for part 2 which will drop on the 26th of July. Cheers!
Thumbnail photo thanks to @laurakillingbeck (instagram) who I was lucky enough to run into out on course!
By far the best coverage of the many facets of the event - food, drinks, sleeping spots, trail conditions, weather, and a bear. We thoroughly enjoyed this. You could have been in last place and it would still be awesome. Inspiring. Good onya Joe!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it 👌
You took the words right out of my mouth. What an awesome glimpse into the Tour Divide.
Definitely dot watched cheering you on. Massive effort bro, stoked to see the behind the scenes, the pain, the pleasure, the burgers. So good to see a kiwi crushing it out there!
Thanks a lot!!! Appreciate it
Epic Joe.... on all fronts: informative, insightful, gritty, funny and so much more!! Bloody brilliant...well done on the race and the videos...love it!!
So refreshing to get an insight in to the down moments rather than watching something that resembles a Nike add where everything is perfect. Love the way you ride down Fleecer and don't even comment as though it's par for the coarse.
Thanks! Yeh I'm definitely not making it look easy 😅
Brilliant - thanks so much for this. It really brings to life the dot-watching back in June. Getting these little insights about how much you knew of your (and competitors') position during the event is really interesting. You and Chris B. weren't tempted to rush to the porta-hilton to evict the first three then? :)
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it, haha looked like 3 people was enough for that porta loo!
First time I've ever stopped a youtube clip half way thru to comment! Just awesome skills Joe! Loved lava mountain & fleecer ridge! I would be slower than your Nana thru there!
That's a great compliment! Appreciate it
Great video dude, giving a great perspective of the race. Looking forward to part 2. You’re providing inspiration & creating intrigue for me to dabble in the ultra world.
Thanks a lot! Definitely recommend an ultra dabble 👌 you'll be hooked like me
Thank you so much for this, also for your gear videos, there is so much to learn and to admire! I was glued to trackleaders during the race and really enjoyed it, but your videos make the story whole! A big thanks for the extra effort of filming!
❤
a real trip down memory lane for me and my wife. we done it as a Jolly in 2019, definitely a highlight of our lives. took us almost 3 months to do it all, but we smelt the wet grass and bear skat. good on ya mate, so chuffed for you.
So keen for this. I’ll watch it tomorrow morning while I have my pre ride breakfast.
So little sleep, so much resolve. Thanks for sharing your story, this is a huge feat. Looking forward to part 2
Thanks heaps!
Inspirational!😊
When is the Red Bull sponsorship coming your way?!!😉😉😉😁
Compelling viewing Joe!!
Consecutive 250-300km days would be tough even on tar-seal... Seeing the state of those trails was a reality check; hard won kms!!
Thanks a lot mate! Appreciate it
Solid Joe !
Great coverage, fantastic effort I’ll be rooting for ya and watching each video
🔨
Joe, you're a legend. I am so stoked to have your videos as a resource as i prepare for 2024. Cheers.
Awesome commentary Joe ! Can't wait for Part II :)
Thanks a lot Simon!
WOW can’t wait for episode 2. Such an inspiration and amazing documentation of the true grit and determination it takes to race the TD. Amazing effort!
Great work, looking forward to part 2!
Really well done! Enjoyed watching and looking forward for more content!
Thanks!
Amazing stuff Joe, that was epic, well done buddy!
Thanks mate!!
Really shows the mental resolve that is required at the pointy end of the race. Great insight
Thanks for bringing the Tour Divide experience to life for us couch dwelling dot watchers!🟢
Thanks! Glad to hear it
Thanks for sharing, love the honesty and truly showing the highs and lows. I followed everyday during the event and this helps put some context to it. BTW when the top 3 were held up in the storm, the 3 of them sought refuge in a porter cabin. Nice and snug.... wonder who got the throne?
Will take some inspiration from you as I embark on Deadhorse to Ushuaia in 1 week, albeit considerably slower and weighed down😂
Thanks Rob, appreciate it. Yeh I heard all about the porta loo after I finished 😂 All the best for your mission
Wow epic challenge.
Good on you man, what a ride from the confort of our home. Respect Joe!
Thanks for the awesome insight of tour ride and showing it warts and all. You are a massive inspiration to a dot watcher.
Thankyou
Top effort and bloody awesome report. Looking forward to part II
Amazing!
Great watch thank Joe. Awesum effort
Thanks a lot!
Kia kaha, bro. You’re an inspiration. I have thought about doing this but at 65 and after pulling the quad tendon off my kneecap back at the start of the lockdowns, it’s not a realistic idea.
I stayed at that exact same toilet! got cuaght in a bad sorm, saved the day! pretty clean honestly.
This was epic Joe! It looked incredible and what an amazing effort!
Thanks!
enthralling adventure, love your honesty! The good, the bad and the ugly! (mud)
What an amazing adventure! Great job mate ❤
Good to see you filled in the "dots" Joe...I was an avid "dot watcher" so your vlog gives a real sense of how massive an effort it required to complete the event.
We have been loving all these adventure videos bro, keep em coming. Awesome work on the divide, looking forward to part 2.
Hi Joe, fare play for filming mate, hard enough just taking part man. Nice one. I'm no Garmin lover so feel for you, went Wahoo, brilliant. Love the tooth brushing haha. My shoe tip, wear Shimano SPD sandals man. It's all I use through the summer in all conditions and I love rocky descents, woods. bikepacking, That mud, Every year I se it and wonder why riders don't use a fatbike with 29er wheels. I have my own bike brand and mud clearance is a big part of my frame designing. Looking forward to part 2
Great vid! Much respect for you on this ride. Keep them wheels rolling! 💪🏼🚴🏼♂️💨
A definite eye opener to reality of the divide. Can't wait for part two!
Thanks for posting the video, amazing effort in challenging conditions and you even captured the video clips - Awesome Job ...!! 👍
Great vid. Love to hear more on the mental challenge of riding all day, day after day.
Great coverage Joe, great to see how a burger can bring you back from the depths. Can't wait to see how the southern half unfolds
🙌 Thanks, great video! Looking forward to the second half of the non-race!
What a incredible journey and accomplishment thanks for taking us along which made it even more impressive.
Wow!!!! This is really amazing content. Super impressed that you had the foresight to take video snips all through this adventure.....and keep taking them even when you weren't feeling top of the game. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks for bringing us along!!!!
Excellent video a brilliant insight to long distance endurance bike racing. Well done.
Great stuff, looking forward to part 2. =) Some great footage, I often leave my camera off when not riding when I should probably keep the camera rolling as often that b-roll actually does make for good a-roll!
Absolutely loved this! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us Joe. Can’t wait for P2 🤞🏻
Great stuff, Joe! Enjoyed that, and brought back some great memories! Looking forward to Part 2
Thanks for sharing your adventure Joe, inspiring me for the TNGA in about a month. Looking forward to part 2. And yes hamburgers can be a game changer
Great race!! Your video (also great by the way) is bringing out a whole bunch of elemental TDR truisms. One of which sort of goes like: You plan, study and train for months. During the race some small thing(s) go a bit sideways, and you lose some hr.(s) here and there. For many racers, thinking about those lost hrs leads to the ‘what ifs’, which leads to the question of if there is ever a ‘next time’-- and execution is somehow closer to perfection--how much time could I shave off….looking forward to your second vid!!
Incredible effort Joe . Truely amazing
Thanks Rob!
Really impressive. I'm very much looking forward to part II
Crazy conditions mate but you’re killing it ..well done 👍🏻🚴
Great story so far, especially with a less than optimal navigation system.
Thanks!
Good job! Cant believe you didn't get the Garmin working. What a nightmare
Great video! Looking forward to watching the next. Definitely get a small sense of some of the tribulations you went through.
Great video- very entertaining year to dot watch. As many others have said, us dot watchers/viewers really enjoy these types of videos. Great work and perseverance.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Loved That! Looking forward to part 2
Amazing stuff Joe. What an achievement, especially with those Garmin issues
Great video, and awesome effort! thanks for sharing.
Fantastic Joe, love your work!
Thx for sharing
Great video Joe. Result totally earned
What a beast! Epic stuff mate!!
Wow!! So impressive! Thanks for sharing!
Chapeau best video by far !
They say that the Tour Divide is an amateur event, but I sure couldn't do it (I'd either reconsider life and quit two hours in or I'd get lost somehow lol). Great video.
The only reason it's amateur is because it doesn't accept sponsors. Has little to do with the athletes
appreciate the insights! great ride!!!!
Nice trip and coverage 😊
Impressive :)
so good
Congratulations on your result and amazing effort Joe - well done!.......and still able to film all this along the way :) - Hey, just wondering what you used to attached your light to your helmet?? it looks like it's removable?
Maybe Silk Road Mountain Race in 2024?
Phenomenal
Yea boi 🤘
Damn Joe just Fkn Epic!
JOE NATION. Best name 😊
What model Fenix light are you using on your helmet?? That velcro gig is such a nice set up. I re-watched your gear check video from the other month but couldn't catch what model it was. Chur bro! Looking forward to Part 2!
I'm wondering what will change in the race if there was not a real time leaderboard available to be checked by racers themselves.
Bro what’s all the whistling awesome watch mate
I think Joe's podium finish as a rookie is pretty amazing. Next year?
I also rode the TD this year and I'm trying to decide if WY or NM was worse.
At 16.29 mere mortals would be walking down but not @JoeNation. He's whooping with delight as his downhill blood starts flowing!!
Hi Joe. Enjoying your Tour Divide vid - thank you 👍🏻.. could I please ask you what set of tri bar clip ons you used for the race, and if you were happy wi[h them? Oh, and also your waterproof over mitts - what were they? Thanks in advance 😊, Stevie 🏴
❤❤
Awesome video mate! hate to ask such a stupid question- but which POC helmet is that your wearing? cheers man.
No drama!!
Great video! What is the whistle sound that you hear from time to time?
Bear whistle, to tell the wildfire you are there and to stay clear so you both don't end up in the same spot of territory by surprise and have a face off situation.
@ChrisburkardStudio sighting at 16:50!

👀
Joe. Are you on for 2024??
How much money did you spend in total? :)
I'll never not be amazed that the human body can do something like this on absolute crap food.
В таких путешествиях по возможности лучше есть жирное мясо,так будет больше сил и энергии.
