- Crisscrossing the Continental Divide for 2,750 miles between Banff in the Canadian Rockies and Antelope Wells on the Mexican border, the Great Divide is one the world’s most iconic long distance mountain biking routes. On this sky high trail, there’s no such thing as a regular ride. But even by ultra cycling standards, Lael Wilcox’s history on the route is a colourful one.
In 2015, Lael raced the Tour Divide - an event that follows the route - and set a new women’s course record despite having to ride herself to an emergency room en route to deal with a persistent breathing issue. But rather than celebrating her achievement, Lael set out to better it. Just two weeks later, she rode to the start from her home in Alaska, took on the trail for a second time and lowered her own record by another day and a half.
Today, the outright course record is held by the late long-distance legend Mike Hall, whose time of 13 days 22 hours and 51 minutes has stood since 2016. Inspired by Mike’s methodical approach to managing the mileage but convinced she can beat the record, Lael is returning the Rockies with unfinished business. In the latest episode of Rapha Gone Racing, we document her latest record attempt and follow her as she runs into issues much bigger than any bike ride.

This is one of my favorite videos about you! I wanted to give you a big hug at the end.
And everyone wants to hug you, Ryan! Ole!!
Ryan! Legend, cool to see this. And wow, what a story right? This video really IS amazing.
"suffering is something that happens to you that you cant control" rings so true at the end.
Exactly. I like to describe it as self-inflicted pain.
These aren't just great cycling videos, they are great videos. Just artistic.
Amen!
That had to send chills down her spine when that voice called out in the church!
10:56: "Own it, be part of it, or just don't do it." Words to live by. You go, girl!
I was about to put it here too...Exactly!
Really loved the tribute to Mike Hall
@Randy Mayfield Same, in too many of these videos Lael's competitors are patriarchal baddies too be smitten. In reality they too are nice folks with the same drive and determination and love for nature.
I needed this. It’s important to see that our hero’s are human too.
Such an amazing athlete always inspiring!
Words cannot describe how amazing you are. Damn! Oh and how scary was it when that guy screamed out “ What are you doing up there.” Haha. Freaked me out. Blair witch project. Congratulations young lady.
Great by Lael and beautiful work by Thereabouts
Love Lael's positivity and inspiring nature. Was sad to see her cry, a beautiful lady!❤
So much love for Lael and thank you Rapha
I'm not normally the kind of person to comment on RUclips videos, but this one compelled me to write something. What a brutally honest and raw depiction of Lael and her perseverance. She is a huge inspiration as a cyclist and as a human being, always choosing to look for some sort of silver lining in every situation. She shows real, true empathy to the world around her. Great film, folks.
its nice to see videos honoring not just those who cross the line first or even those who cross the finish at all, but those who simply make the journey despite the enormous challenges. their spirit and stories inspire...
I was disabled 5 years ago and legally blinded. Being a cyclist i just kept riding, my family thought i would just stop. Your rides are a inspiration to me and many others, keep pedaling !
We love you Lael. Thanks for keeping it real and giving us the truth. RIP Mike Hall
Rapha, I applaud you on another beautiful film. Lael, you're a beast (in a loving way) and always willing to be "real." You're and inspiration to so many.
I love Lael and her passion for cycling and the environment. Her smile is infectious. She will get the record someday!
Beauty and sadness.. Great film as always.
ahhhh jeez, i love this lady! @laelwilcox You rock girl!!! so fun to watch you
Beautifully made video. Rue, it is truly amazing what you do with your cameras and storytelling. And thank you, Lael, for sharing your story.
Hey Corrine! All of the beauty was captured by Ben Page, Gus Morton, Isaac Karsen and Kirk. I just got Lael to the start line :)
Really enjoyed this video. Lael you are awesome !
you're amazing Lael! thank you for existing
Lael is a legend. ❤️
One inspirational woman, who casually mentions riding 200 miles a day for 14 days unassisted to break the record. Mike Hall would be smiling.👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ventolin crew feel your heartache. Incredible effort and kudos for listening to your body.
Best films in cycling, hands down. Thank you.
Beautiful film and story.
Having filmed a great deal of bike packing including Mike on his last race … total respect for your film and film makers 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾 …. Delightful journey.
Own it, be part of it, truly inspirational . Thank you 🤙
I hope you guys continue making videos like this with lael. I'll keep watching day 1.
This is one of the best Rapha Films ever!
What an amazing documentary. The soundtrack, the angles, the colors, Lael, her bike and the route. Just amazing. You'll get it soon, Lael!
This video is just amazing, makes me wanna ride my bike, discover, travelling and protect our forest ....huge respect to that women and thanks rapha films
Such a beautiful film. Thanks for the inspiration!
RIP Mike Hall 😢
I first became aware of Leal after watching Mike Hall in 'Inspire to Ride' and searching for other ultra endurance events. I love seeing the joy in her face as she talk about getting out and riding. Her words are motivational and she truly is inspirational.
There are some awesome podcasts of Mike's legacy rides on his Trans-Con and Trans-Pyreneese ideas.
Hey Lael, you didn't quit, you just had to stop ! You're a Awesome Athlete ! Keep it up !!
Lael, you are amazing. Amazing video as well. Keep on riding and being yourself forever.
Good on you Lael. Quitting is a very hard thing to do, but you can't race when you're sick. I've toured through BC in 2017 and the fires were hard to deal with, especially as a cardiac patient with 1 lung. Be it asthma, hypothermic shock, or an injury, throwing in the towel is the hardest and best decision you could make.
Love the story telling guys. Lael keep your chin up and keep inspiring thanks so much for what you bring to the sport
You are SO amazing! Thank you for the inspiration and the many great videos.
Always heart warming to see coverage of Lael. Thank you again for another great story of her endeavors.
Lael is an inspiration for so many cyclists around the world. The mindset it must take to do what Lael does and what so many others do is awesome. A great film about an amazing women, an amazing ride and a great tribute to Mike Hall. Many words of wisdom in a what is a great film, I would love to have a day riding with Lael just to ride and chat and get an insight into what it takes to do what she does.
This is such a great video! Lael is beyond amazing!
You're a legend Lael! You will do it!
It's always awesome to see Lael give everything she's got!!! It seems Mike will keep his record one more year, but maybe next time...
This film captures something I've never seen in any other film.
If you never try, you never know. Thanks for this great film. Inspiring.
Best race adventure video ever is an understatement. But truly a masterpiece!
Love the video. Lael is inspiring.
so happy that lael is being given this spotlight recently !!!
This is such a powerful video and it needs to be shared on a bigger stage. Thank you Lael, hang in there, your time for the record will come.
Really good video!!! Sometimes we have to treat triumph and defeat as the same.
I love Lael. So inspiring. Great film. Keep it up.
Cinematic, stunning videography, totally gripping
Awesome person/athlete! Wonderful video.
This is absolultely touching. Have seen a lot of endurance videos but already the pipeline FKT was in its epic perfection different. But this is mind blowing stuff. Yes it is sad not to accomplish the distance. But the overall message of this is so much bigger. This is really a lesson about the need for change. I was in tears at the end and Lael you are my hero of 2021. Two weeks ago I finished a marathon through a huge forrest and I thought of your awesome projects during the race an before. Trank you so much. You accomplished a mission with this ride of importance beyond any record.
with 20% of her dedication I would consider myself a badass! Such an inspiration and still humble and cool person. Kudos!
A true champion is one that can handle a defeat/set back the same way they handle victory/success and you Lael are a fckn champion! You inspire not based on the successes but the way you give everyone else the inspiration to try, to get on a bike and ride. Thanks Rapha for bringing beautiful content like this and for making sure that Lael is shared with all of us. Saddened to see what is happening with the fires, absolutely devastating.
Great video & as always, great work, heart and effort Lael. ❤️🚴🏼♀️🤙🏼
Love what she said about suffering. It’s why I was never comfortable using that word in sports. I find it disrespectful to those in the world that’s really struggling in life, such as the communities affected by the fires
Aw wow I found out about the ending during the video. So sad!! Hope her and Rapha go at it again and completely it. New to exploring on 2 wheel thing I’m in the city these video really create and inspire a drive to head out to the opens of American and just ride.
Lael is my hero!
Bummer, I empathize with you, Lael!
For what it's worth, you're the reason I recently
got myself a nice gravel bike and I plan to do
bikepacking. You're awesome and a huge inspiration.
Thank you so much, I wish you all the best! ❤️
Just watched your video. Really artistic. I felt for you. It’s so sad with all the wildfires. Hope you can get the record. Pedal safe
"You have to crave miles." Absolutely. 👍💪👍💪👍💪
Beautiful film!
Thank you for this.
parabéns lael sua travessia é incrível sou seu fã aqui no Brasil....
Pobrecita con asthma. God bless. You are a sweetheart
As an asthmatic I have so say that you preservered in the face of great adversity, and that preserving you're health is the most important thing, we want to hear about your adventures for the next 60+ years!
Love how Lael , upon quitting, elevated her mind to the bigger climate crisis issue despite her heroic attempt and unstoppable will power. Thanks for making these awesome films Rapha! And thanks for being YOU Lael!!
Lael drinking straight out of the creek. Intestinal fortitude!!
that was a weird moment. I get that they travel light, but iodine tablets are lighter than light.
“You have to crave miles”. Brilliant.
I liked the old man at the beginning. Feeling small but actually a hero!
You rock Lael.....keep going!!
Great story, well shot! :)
The comment about 'suffering' is good to hear. Too often in pro cycling we hear the word 'suffering' as something noble/romantic. It's not, and they're not suffering....
What a powerful video.
Beautiful!!!
Inspiring!
Great video.
Amazing vid , amazing person , one of the reason I ride :)
Amazing human story!!!
She is so great!
Bravo!
01:15 The Three Sisters outside of Canmore. Best place on Earth.
Thank you.
Really great film as usual! Weird seeing no masks in any of the stores as a Canadian though!
Great film, snow one year, fire the next (forgetting the big C) Lael or Sophiane will both go for this again. Head to had or ITT it will be great to see
HERO!!!
You will do it eventually 💪🏻 . An insperation to all .
Inspirational 🙂
Oh my god the gas station anxiety!! I get that on my bike tours. Too real
We moved from the East Coast to Seattle this summer, and were driving through MT in July and the smoke was indeed rough. So sad to see in "Big Sky Country". Butte is a super cool town though. Well worth a stop.
Smoke is a real killer when you are outdoors in it 24/7. I went on a 3 day backpacking trip in 2021 during these same heavy wildfires with some friends and it took our group over 10 hours to travel maybe 12 km. Felt like somebody had to sit down to cough or puke every 15 minutes. I redid that hike this year and reached our first camp before lunch haha.
4:41 lael being their idol gave me tears of joy
Great the Lael is mainstream recognized after years of crushing it. Hope Rapha is paying her what she is worth!
It's great Lael has all that high teck Rapha kit now, but I always identified w/ the thrift shop kit Lael. I get the lions share of my bikepacking wear at second hand shops.
This video makes me want to go out now.
Shocking and amazing testimony to climate change !
Great work Lael… some issues are greater than cycling
