  • Production isn't production without an external monitor. Why?
    Because the camera display is typically cluttered with things like focus assist or false colors. Plus, external monitors are much brighter than camera displays.
    And yet another reason? Lookup tables! If you're shooting RAW the footage doesn't look that great in camera. An external monitor with a LUT allows you to see what the footage will look like later, which helps with creativity on set.
    This video shows how to use the PortKeys LH5P stand alone, and also with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema cameras. You can control your camera from the PortKeys monitor via bluetooth.
    The PortKeys has proven very reliable for us during our film RECKONING, and we're excited about continuing to use it on other productions.

    Great video!! Does the monitor let you focus?

      Thank you. Not that I know of, but I use manual focus lenses so I haven’t even messed with that. But I don’t think it will do that.

    How do you make your screen monitor have that 21:9 ratio point of view? I have a sony fx3

      Hey man, go to Camera Settings > Monitor > 2nd Screen and select your anamorphic desqueeze. It gives two options: 1.33x and 2x.

    Hello. Your video is nice and informative :) I bought a monitor one level up, the LH5P II version, and I have this problem. If I turn the top button on the camera (bmpcc6k) to FALS color, nothing appears on the Portkeyes monitor, only on the camera display. Focus Assistant and LAD work without any problem. The only way to turn on FALS color on the external monitor is to go to the camera menu and in the HDMI settings turn on FALS color hard. The problem is that I also have to turn it off there and not with the top button on the camera :( That's not great if I have stupid access to the camera display :( I would like to know if the same problem is on your monitor. Thank you very much for your help.

      Hey man, I haven't run that scenario but understand what you're doing. Make sure that under SETUP that the "F1 Parameter Displays On" is set to HDMI vs LCD. That could be what's doing this to you.

      Thank you very much. I just figured it out too that I shouldn't set it in the MONITOR menu but in the SETUP menu F1 function button :) Great thanks a lot :) just don't understand why the other two F2 and F3 were set and F1 wasn't :)@@writedirect

    Hi. What is the range in feet for Bluetooth camera control? Have you tested that yet?

    • @writedirect

      Hey man, not ignoring you. Just haven’t tested and wanted to test it to give you some actual data. I’ll try to get to that soon.

      HI! were you able to test the bluetooth range yet for the 6kPro? @@writedirect

      @@travisgrenke I will do this tomorrow! Talk soon.

      @@travisgrenke okay, just tested with the CC6K (FF not Pocket). The farthest I could get it to connect was about 21 feet. Maybe 22 feet. After that it would lose bluetooth connectivity.

      @@writedirect that's good to know. I might get it now. Thank you so much for testing the range. 🙂

    What's with portkeys no control support for canon most used camera in the world

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect  Год назад

      Yeah, not sure. I think they're targeting indie, narrative filmmakers like BM Pocket cameras are.

    Only problem here is my monitor is non responsive, my camera was connected via Bluetooth to my phone. My phone screen gets hit by a baseball and cracked with no way to view. Had to get a new phone, and can no longer connect to anything Bluetooth on the camera because it's still paired to my broken phone I turned in. SMH life having a BM can be so complicated

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect  12 дней назад

      UGH. You can clear out that Bluetooth connection from the BMD menu. That’s not a problem at all.

    • @kd_gray
      @kd_gray 12 дней назад

      @writedirect That's been my problem, my screen is non responsive to touch. I cannot navigate with the buttons. So my camera will unfortunately be forever paired to a broken phone somewhere in a bin of broken phones in Verizon space.

      @@kd_gray oh...that screen is broken? Crud. I wonder if there's anything you can do from the camera app on your computer and hooking the camera up via USB cable?

    • @kd_gray
      @kd_gray 11 дней назад

      @@writedirect I did hook the camera up via usb, updated my firmware and it updated the camera and took me from shooting 5:1 to 8:1. I'll take it I guess. I have more memory to record. Hopefully BM in the future can figure out that if the most important part of the camera (touch screen) goes out that there is a way to at least control the camera with the hard buttons to navigate through the menu system.

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect  11 дней назад +1

      @@kd_gray this would be a showstopper for me. I’d purchase a new camera. And if I couldn’t afford it, would figure out what I could sell to get it! I’m sorry. This is a good point. Another way to navigate the menu. Or at least reset Bluetooth so you could connect with the camera app on your phone. I reach out to Black magic design and see if there’s anyway to at least reset the Bluetooth without the display. Probably not, but you never know. Or if you could restore a config from another pocket 4K? Over right things? Even that would be handy.

    Do i have to buy a mount for it?

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect  Год назад

      Yes, you'll need a mount for your cage. SmallRig, Tilta, etc. Those are pretty inexpensive though.
