- Hi RUclips! I am doing a series of videos where I review the ACTUAL gear I use! We will start with one of my monitors in the Portkeys LH5P II. It is easily one of my favorite monitors I have ever used and it was purchased with my own money! This is the best budget monitor with high quality features. And it's very competitive to monitors that are 2x the cost!

Thank you for a great review. Bonus points for having a little fun with it.
I appreciate that!!!
Bro! You’ve convinced me to get a proper monitor. I’ve been stalling getting one but I definitely need a monitor.
It helps tremendously! I didn’t start requiring them until a year ago and it has made my shooting process soooo much easier
Wait, did you really change your whole back wall at 3:11? 🤯 But you also answered every question I had about the monitor, so, chapeau! 👏
You like?! I film various shows where I’m the on-camera personality and I do live webinars. So decided to invest a little money into the studio 🙏
@@mariodevon_ super like it. but i was all like 'whaaaa' that's crazy. but BOTH setups are so good. everything about your space is exceptional. well done! You're doing it right.
Im in between this, hollyland mars m1 or the shinobi ii, this one is calling my name more tho
Working on getting my hands on the Shinobi! But keep in mind that Mars has the wireless transmission built in. But I’ve been using a wirelesss transmission rig with the LH5P and my clients LOVE it
I have the A7iv. Would you recommend this over the Atomos Shinobi ii now that they have fixed the touch focus issue for video?
I think they are very comparable. Only issue I had with my Atomos monitors was overheating. Outside of that, Atomos has one of the best user interfaces I’ve ever used. Both are solid
Great video! Just ordered one based on your review!
Hope it’s been helpful bro!
Thanks brother nice attitude! first video and I already like you! which one would you get considering the LH7P is only 1000 nits bright? I'm concerned is not going to be bright enough outdoors...
Very informative! Does touch focus work with canon cameras? Have you tried it with your r5?
I have sadly not tried it with the Canon R5! Sold it months ago
@@mariodevon_ Noted with thanks.
Last question. Even though the max input is 4K 30, would I still be able to shoot 4K 60 on my actual camera but use the monitor as a reference only for framing and proper exposure etc?
@@donaldleadonjr.3892yes just instead of sending a 4k 60 signal over hdmi you would send a 1080p 60 signal. And record in what ever you want. Sony FX line cameras all have a setting to scale hdmi output
Hi, LH5PII can touch focus with Canon R5 via wifi and usb control cable~
does this work with the sonya7iii
Yes, it can control SONY A7III via wifi and control cable
so great video, I also got this moniter with new version, but I have problem that I can't solve is when I insert hdmi output to DigiSender. It received a crop image. How can I fix it🥲🙏
I have personally not used DigiSender. I’m working on a video to walk through the entire MovForm software coming soon!
Hi. Can someone post the Amazon Lemo pin link? Thanks!
amzn.to/41IIHtZ
@@mariodevon_ Thanks
On Amazon reviews someone said that is not compatible with FX3! I just don’t understand why
@@teammotiv5789 I’m not sure why either! I use it with my FX3 all the time. They may need to update the firmware on both the camera and the monitor. Video coming soon breaking down how to use the new software
Does it have EL Zone?
I just got this monitor. I wanted to connect with the cable but I coudnt on my sony A6700 that is alot like an FX30. I got wi-fi to work but not the cable.
I apologize that we have not yet tested whether the LH5PII can control the A6700 through the control line. Thank you for your feedback.
Wayyyy better than the shinobi ii
I’m so over Atomos haha will definitely be moving to portkeys. Thank you for the video
Atomos has a good foundation but they just need to work on the quality control
It would be so much better if you could actually control sharpness, saturation and basic contrast control while using a lut...
Hi, I can´t reply recorded footages on my fx3 when I connect the PORTKEYS LH5P II :/ I have to disconnect a hdmi cable and then it works. Have you tried it? Could you advise me how to set fx3 correctly... Many thanks
I mainly use the monitor to playback footage. There may be some Finder/Monitor settings you will have to adjust in the FX3. But it works perfectly on my end. I’ll make a video walking through it
Hi, i had the same problem when i accidentally set the HDMI resolution in External Output setting in the camera to 2160p instead of Auto. If you set it back to Auto it should work
Have you managed to zoom into the 4k on the monitor? When i pinch and zoom its definitely blowing up the 1080 image rather than zooming into the 4k
I actually have not tested it but for me, I only zoom for focus pulling then back to normal
Hi. What firmware is needed for my FX3 to connect to the LH5PII? I wrote to Portkeys and I know I have the latest firmware for the monitor, but when I hit the connection button I keep getting the message “connection failed. Please close the window and try again.” Can you help with this?
The Movnorm firmware is needed. It’s the newest one they released about 2 months ago. The old firmware with the old school font and red color theme, doesn’t work at all since the FX3 had its latest firmware update. The connection only works on the newest MovNorm firmware
@@mariodevon_ Hi. Thanks. I have the latest Movnorm firmware. What firmware do I need for my fX3 and a7siii?
The most recent they released earlier this year. I can’t remember the exact number. But the MovNorm software for Portkeys was resigned specifically in response to the new FX3 update
Additionally, the old firmware for both, works together. The new firmware for both, works together. Hope this helps!
Thx. What I need to know is what firmware on the FX3 and a7siii is needed.
Would this work with a A7iii I’ll upgrade to Fx3 soon.
The monitor will be the camera control may not as it supports newer camera firmware
@@mariodevon_ so basically I’ll be able to use the monitor portion but not all the features until I upgrade to the fx3
Hi, LH5PII can control SONY A7III via wifi~
Can you do vertical shoots with this monitor ?
Absolutely!!
@@mariodevon_ how because im trying out vertical anamorphic with monitor mounted normally on the side of my fx3 and I cant get the orientation right.
also would u know the actual vertical desqueeze for a 1.5 anamorphic?
@@juliuschurafilms if you’re shooting vertically, just turn the monitor. But if you’re trying to shoot anamorphic vertically, that may be where you’re finding issues as you will get vertical lines shooting anamorphic vertically. Anamorphic is made for horizontal footage, not vertical
This "there's no excuse to not have a monitor" mindset is so bizarre to me. I own a monitor and I use it when it's appropriate. It's only been the last decade or so that they've been widely popular. They've become a crutch for a lot of younger videographers, similar to how some videographers can't get off a gimbal.
I think some of us just like to see bro. It’s not that deep 😭😅
@@mariodevon_ You're the one who said, ""there's no excuse to not have a monitor" but if you suddenly want to pretend that "it's not that deep" to you I guess go ahead.
Because you can get a good monitor for less than $200 now. Over the last decade they weren’t so easily accessible for creators that wanted an actual good monitor instead of using the low quality on cameras screens. If you want to use the on camera screens, that’s cool too
@@mariodevon_ There has been a huge shift over the last 30 years, from cinematographers buying a good viewfinder to buying a good monitor. When I was in college it was "If you want to be a good cinematographer, get yourself a quality viewfinder." Monitors are fantastic, but a good cinematographer shouldn't need one.
I think we are having 2 different conversations. As Allen Iverson would say...."We sitting here, I’m supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talking about monitors. I mean, listen, we’re talking about monitors. Not a viewfinder. We talking about monitors. I know I’m supposed to use viewfinders too. I know I’m supposed to lead by example. I know that. And I’m not shoving it aside like it’s nothing. I know it’s important. I do. I honestly do. But we talking about monitors, man. What are we talking about? Monitors? We talking about monitors, man. We talking about monitors. We ain’t talking about the viewfinder."
Sorry that's where my brain went. I like viewfinders too I promise.
I don’t understand why none of you talk about the importance of Focus Touch. In this video, it’s barely mentioned, whereas it should have been discussed more. I believe this monitor doesn’t allow the use of Focus Touch without Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, there’s no option to use a USB-C cable. This is the only reason I’m hesitant to buy it.
I’m pretty sure I mentioned full camera control and showed it on screen 😅 and you’re correct. camera control for things like Touch Focus Tracking is over WiFi. It’s a sub $300 monitor. In this price point, monitors will not be jam packed with the best features sadly
@@mariodevon_ Thanks for your reply. I didn’t mean to be rude, but I think it’s an important point since it’s the direct competitor of the Shinobi II. By the way, I noticed there’s a USB-C to mini-USB cable that can be used to control the camera (focus, rec, and more). Is that correct?
@adrianoc7105 oh I didn’t think you were rude at all hence my emoji haha. And there is a camera control port but yes USB-C will be how you connect to the camera. Problem here is losing USB C power delivery if you were planning on rigging your camera
@@mariodevon_ Thanks. I don’t use the USB-C port to power my camera, so I could use it to control my Sony. Alright, now I get it. This product is getting interesting. I’m thinking of picking up one of these three monitors: Shinobi II, Portkeys LH5P II, or Godox GM6S. Any recommendations?”
Mine won’t save any of my custom settings. I have to redo every time I power up. Any ideas/tips? Thx
The 7in is cheaper because it’s half the nits.
Well don’t give spoilers bro! 😂 I own both shhhhh lol
support 4k 50/60 ?
Hi, regardless of the video resolution recorded internally by the camera, simply set the camera's HDMI output resolution to 1080P, and then our monitor will display the image.
@@PortkeysMonitor did it work with nikon z8 camera. I see someting new in your list..
@@fotoshooter_ch Yes, LH5PII works with Nikon Z8
@PortkeysMonitor with everthing? Wifi (not cable), the normal, big Display, Focus-touch, iso.. ?

Not a good experience for me, since the software (new version) couldn’t even recognize my fx3, either through WiFi or just in the settings menu. I had to unfortunately send it back just 1 week ago. Maybe I got a lemon.
My FX3 wasn’t being recognized either but I found out it’s because my FX3 was set to 5GHz WiFi. The Portkeys LH5P II only works with 2.4GHz WiFi, so once I changed that setting in my FX3, it worked right away
Almost *30* years 😂
Haha I realized this as I was editing and got even more confused why we got USB-A on this thing. But seriously, just cost savings I know 😅
Did you me 30 years 😂
Budget...:)
