Unfortunately what most often happens is poor money management and what should be a perpetual fund for upkeep either gets spent for something else or was never set up in the first place. Many states have laws that require that account but again not much enforcement going on.

Seeing that falling down mausoleum is tragic! I am guessing it was filled up and so no more money came into maintain it. There should be a some kind of national trust to help keep these left behind places intact! Happy New Year Matt! Looking forward to 539 in 2020!

National trust? That would be peachy had they been a non profit project at their inception. These facilities early on were money making monsters and when the funding placed in trusts that were intended for perpetual care was bled away, neglected maintenance rapidly became far more serious. Over the next 20 years there will be for profit companies whos specialty will be to demolish and minimize the threat to public health of these biohazards. And the cost involved will come right out of taxpayers wallets. In many locations in the world crypts are available only as long as a yearly fee is paid.when the money stops, the body is evicted. And the crypt is used for another body. This policy would keep funds coming in and minimize abandonment here in the US.Because unfortunately, In America, its all about the Benjamin's.

What a beautiful setting, Matt. All that open space and the clouds and sunlight and the view that goes on for miles. I completely agree with you about going to a cemetery to walk or to read and this location is especially good. It would be calming to find a bench (particularly if you have a cushion with you!) and to just sit and look out toward the horizon.---Too I don't think there's anything unreasonable about your concerns about people following you in a cemetery or being nearby. You're alone in an isolated spot and it's good to be aware of things that could happen and to be cautious.

I went to a cemetery in Ohio back in the 1980's when the manager was on site. He invited me in his office. I just wanted to ask the manager if He could unlock it for a while. He let me borrow the keys to the old municipal mausoleum (which is something I would never do as a manager). I explored it. The mausoleum had a main hall and secondary halls and private gated rooms. Some parts of the interior were never finished. I could find Some where the crypt plates were not attached well. I spent a long time in there. The manager eventually drove by to pick up the key from me. He said they are thinking about taring it down.

Cool place and really big but so quiet and peaceful. The mausoleum is a witness to the declining rural population. I am sure when it was built they thought it would be full in fifty years. Looks like there is plenty of room left. Most of those big mausoleums charged an extra fee at internment for perpetual care. But as subscribers declined funds often dried up. Now it's anyone's guess as to who is responsible for the building. This is happening all across the country as politicians dismantle the government and shirk it's civic responsibilities . But a great place. Thanks for another great trip. 539 all the best!

  • @LawyerCalhoun1

As to the mausoleum, I would guess that the roof leaked, water got in above the ceiling, and with freezing and thawing cycles, caused the ceiling to break up and fall. At least the mausoleum residents, some of whom have been there a hundred years, don't notice that their building is a mess. You kind of wish that a hundred years ago, there was a time machine, and those selecting these kinds of buildings for their final resting places would see what was in store. Give me cremation or a Green Burial instead of being pickled and put in a concrete cell in the wall.,

When the money is not their for the new roof in 100 years and any family members have all passed also. The once grand and majestic buildings become ruins. Columbariums are much better idea in my opinion. Check out the one at oak hill cemetary in d.c. Wish 539 would make that trip! Ha! Ha!

There is a huge historical cemetery near where I work. It has a grand Moorish styled mausoleum that has been closed because of moisture that is causing sections of the ceiling to collapse. For a while families had to leave flowers by the front door. Now, I think they may open it one day of the year so families can visit at their own risk.

Hi Matt, it would be interesting if they give you permission to take a look inside the big mausoleum. Looking at the parts on the floor seems like the roof collapsed or was badly constructed. When you look towards the glass stained windows ( very beautiful ) you ca see pieces hanging from the ceiling.I think they closed it because it is to dangerous to enter now.Must be possible to restore the ceiling ( and walls if they are affected too ) so you are allowed to visit it again.Tha mausoleums you showed are interesting, with beautiful art work, great details in the doors ( Carelas / Baum /Chochos Spirrison).Big variaty in markers ( material, age, lettering, artwork, details ).Would be nice to see more of the older type/style markers, they are more interesting then the newer ( more plain ) ones.Looking forward for # 3 ( guess it is going to take some time to investigate or get permission to enter mausoleum).Enjoyed the second episode of this cemetery.Nice to see some of the surroundings, shows how many different landscapes the US has.Travelling throughout the year we see the changes in seasons & the influences of the weather on the landscape that passes by while travelling in the car.I enjoy each season through matts eyes/ camera. Thanks for taking us/ me with you on the road, feels like you are on the passengers seat sometimes.Keep up the great work Matt.See you in 2020...looking forward to see all the states of the US & maybe more !!!!Matt stay safe while travelling....Love the new photos on instagram.

I live in the North of England quite close to a church graveyard. It always surprises me, and saddens me, to see graves from this century never mind earlier ones unattended and uncared for. Western countries don’t respect our ancestors, and a growing percentage don’t even care. We have instances of bodies being dumped so that relatives avoid funeral costs and the town council ends up paying for a cremation, never knowing who they are.

If there’s electricity still running that HVAC is probably the ventilation for the crypts. They have ventilation so people walking through won’t smell decaying bodies. They probably have a drainage system as well. Just in case the casket leaks some of its contents. It’s just in case.

Sometimes in the winter trains are left idling, rather than shutting sown and starting up again. I heard a train horn sounding in another of your videos.

I would think they would keep the system running because of the smell of decay within the mausoleum.

The state of some cemeteries is a complete disgrace. Ultimately it’s a government issue. If they allow these structures to be built, they must be held liable for their upkeep. So sad at the lack of respect.

Just goes to show you dont waste money on expensive mausoleums. If you dont have someone to take care of it it will cave in and your bones are left vulnerable.

The HVAC sounds could be coming from the roof.. And with the ceiling collapsed the sound could be reverbing from inside

Calman's last name is BAUM. (All the names in this crypt are related to the Baum's). Elizabeth TERRELL married a Baum. Mary Van Winkle BAUM was the wife of Calman. Elizabeth Terrell Baum was Calman's mother. Fred Terrell BAUM was the son of Calman. Fred Terrell Baum married Nellie Wright (1918). That is as much as I could find. Love your videos.

One last comment I am very surprised that there are no signs of any security guards in this place we have them here in the uk and we also have a service that provides people who come to our cemeteries and cut the grass and make good any repairs also 85 percebt of the cemeteries in the uk have CCTV cameras that go directly to the police station I would risk prison if I caught anyone vandalising graves I think I would probably put the people in hospital

We don't ever see vandalism on this scale here in the uk if this happened here the people who did it would be jailed for a very long time it's so disrespectful when you see the amount of damage that is being done to the final resting places of people I hope that the people who have done this are jailed if ever caught

What happens is, the money spent on each space keeps it up along with the grounds....once the spaces are filled, that's it. All funds to keep it pristine are now directed from ground burials, which have to focus those funds towards those areas...many times, the descendants of the deceased will donate to a perpetual care fund. That may stop though after a generation or two... funny thing is, if the remains are disturbed , or require entombment, it may become the financial responsibility of immediate relatives/children of the deceased if they can be located.

Might be that the placks are beeing pulled off graves. The metal is beeing sold for cash. And forcing owners to reset names and numbers. A real pain.
