I sure wish I could go with you to these cemeteries. When I was a lot younger, I used to drive my Momma and baby brother all over the woods. We found one burial ground that had been lost for 100+ years. We were paid $500 for finding that one, plus we found a lot of old homesteads, and Momma always got clippings of the rose bushes that grew wild. We sure had a lot of fun and learned a lot of history.

@@franciscavanraalte7483 It was. People had been looking for that cemetary over 75 years. It had belonged to a town that burned and no one had ever gone back. Momma and I found it while walking down an old wagon trail. Th grasses, bushes and trees had just about reclaimed the whole area. That's why we were paid $500, because we always looked for old homesteads and cemeteries.
@@franceslambert8070 good thing that you found it especially when they were searching for 75 years.Keep searching , maybe you find more interesting places in the future.Places like these have historic value an value for family/ relatives of the deceased.

not weird Sumermak.You're curious about the history of the place and the people who are buried there.Als o possible that there are mausoleums or crypts that are interesting.
I love walking through cemeteries too. Where my best friend is buried I pay my respects to the soliders who died.
@@lauragadille3384 in our country ( the Netherlands ) we pay respects to soldiers who died in WW2 on 1 day per year ( may 4th).Have a small ceremony and lay flowers/ floral arrangements on the graves
Sumermak I do this too I love doing it. If there's trash when I go I clean that up too. But like you I don't go alone. You never know who's lurking around.
No it's not weird at all Sumermak. I too love to walk and look at the dates and names on the stones especially the mausoleum and research them and see who is buried there. It's all HISTORY.

I love old mausoleums and cemeteries. Out of curiosity, I’ve been researching modern private mausoleums and they start out at the very minimum, $25,000 (one vault) and can go up past 1 million. No wonder you don’t see many recent ones!
Wow! Just Wow! Loved this location and the varying degrees of mausoleums. Reminds us that family is to be enjoyed now in the present. Lovely pictures in the one mausoleum, and the stained glass was beautiful.

I think you can spend there a whole day to check out the markers.SawWOW marker (Woodmen of the World), but you passed it by.Love the mausoleums , especially the ones with beautiful glass in the back (himmelberger/ barnheisel ).Definenitely at sunset a great place to photograph.The elk ornament is very beautiful.Nice to see that it survived the influences caused by the weather ( and vandals from ruining it )Great job as ever. Hey Matt..Well you really knocked it out of the park here my friend..Your travels do come up with some very beautiful surprises now and then.I also have always been so fascinated with the old styles of the mausoleums throughout the years and the beautiful satined glass,ornate doors & windows.Then to see how the years seem to tone them like an old coin with age just really adds to their beauty! It really is such a shame how some of these places get vandalized through the years and I never have understand what makes a person be so disrespectful to a loved ones final resting place.Also over the years I have witnessed personally a few mausoleums "opened to the elements" that have decayed inside to where the wall slabs have fallen off and actually exposed the casket and even partially rotted alot of the wooden caskets to where you can even see bones inside. Have you come across any in this type of disrepair during your travels Matt and what can anyone do to help get these repaired back to a respectable state? I still dont understand why many old graves are just left to literally rot in some places/areas and as we talked about this issue in your last "Live Stream" maybe we can try to help out in some way soon down the road..Well I am very excites to see part #2 of this as many others will be I am sure..Again you travels & time are very much appreciated Matt and I look forward to a possible "live Stream" soon at the "very haunted" Bachelor Grove Cemetery just outside of Chicago,Ill Todd
HI Todd. Must be strange to look inside the caskets and see the remainders of the person inside.Agree with you that places like these need care and attention of cities/ communities where they are found.It is part of our history and it's a shame that places like these get lost/Might be a good idea that schools or organisations "adopt " some graves and mantain it. In our country ( Netherlands ) some schools/ organisations (or sometimes private persons ) maintain graves of soldiers from WW2 so that they do not get lost or forgotten.

If you ever get the chance to visit Virginia, go to the Cemetery on Princess Anne road in downtown Norfolk . Due to the closeness to Williambsburg and Yorktown historic colonies as well as the Norfolk-Southern railroad and ports thier numerous very large and well kept mausoleums from the 1800's . There are also older graves in the back of the cemetery. There is one that is stunning. It is the Egyptian Revival style. It has over life size sphynx on the corners outside and 10 foot metal doors that you can see in and the floor is mosaic with one sarcophagus with the sun and ISIS wings enveloping it. It is stunning. Those inverted torches on the Barr family mausoleum is quite a neat addition. Inverted torches are symbols of the Greek god Thanatos, he was the personification of death.

We have similar mausoleums in our cemeteries here in the UK, the difference is the coffins are visible in most of them here.

Love your videos on the mausoleums....Have you ever checked out the Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC. It’s huge, around 150 acres, LOTS of mausoleums, Civil War graves, beautiful Victorian Cemetery statues, even a pyramid shaped mausoleum. If you’ve not been, you should really check it out.

It’s mind boggling to think about the amount of money some of these families had. It had to be unbelievably expensive even back then. Not as outrageous as today though!! These are Beautiful reminders of the past and the gentility (?) and extravagance people displayed! I’m 60 yrs. old and I have not seen a mausoleum being built in my lifetime! Anyone else see one built recently?

Hi Matt, that was so eerie with that crow cawing at the end. Some really beautiful statuary and mausoleums too. A shame you couldn't get in any of them. I think the one I was intrigued by the most was the mausoleum with the photographs in. I would guess that when relatives visit that mausoleum it must be more emotional for them as they can see the deceased's photo. A really cool video, thank you for sharing. x
have to agree with you Sue,.The photographs make it more meaningful especially for family visiting the mausoleum.It's a shame you can not get in but on the other hand if you could people might get in an ruin the place.

@@SueGirling68 last week i read in the newspaper that a complete cemetery was stripped from copper ornaments and graveparts.Also stolen were ornaments made of expensive marble, even some headstones.These people have no respect for the deceased, especially when it concerns childrens graves.

This was absolutely incredible Matt! I love this place! Very German. The Elks Rest was probably in reference to the Benevolent Order of the Elks. I used to belong to the Elks. Also I read that Indiana has some of the most Civil War monuments. Huge monuments dedicated to the soldiers. Great video. I want to go there so bad. Excellent footage!

Hello,
On the door of the first mausoleum you visited (Barr) the is an upside down torch which is a symbol of death going back to Roman times. Notice that one is missing (on the right) I wonder if that was natural forces or somebody helped themselves it appears to have been pulled off. (Several other mausoleums had the same symbol.)

Wish I had known you were going to be in my area!! The elks rest section... in this area there is a masonic lodge of the elks. So this could be where the members are buried I'm not sure. But there are still several lodges here in this area that I am aware of. I have many relatives that are buried in that area. By the way this is not an abandoned Cemetery by any means. It is taken care of :) I kept looking to see if any of my relatives were shown on the video but it doesn't seem like it. I did want to take a moment to say I love your videos and I know exactly what you mean when you say you get people checking up on you. I take pictures for findagrave.com and I get so many people following me. Though I have had a few come up and asked me what I was doing. I wish everyone would do that!

If you can't look it up that way try looking up the Flesher Cemetery in Jay county, Indiana and then choosing most any memorial. You'll see my photos for each memorial and can get to my profile from there. These are not really artistic photos. They are simply to help families/friends of that person. Looked at the photos on instagram.Some of the mausoleums look like they have a Dutch angle ( kirsch / grobhiser).Is it the way they are situated ? ( uneven ground).Love the statues and the door ornament.

Where is this located at The old mausoleums are pretty much a lost art most families are using the larger buildings where more people are at I guess its also for better security but still these old ones are amazing again another great video now for part 2
Super cool video! Was wondering why people would permanently cement up a mausoleum? Sort of defeats the purpose after spending all that money on the original structure.
i guess the ccement it up when there is no more room for another body or no more family members left beloning to that specific group.
@@franciscavanraalte7483 Cement is probably the worst material too. Marble loses details, but granite is FOREVER.
@@jagboy69 you are right worldtraveller.Cement is a cheap but bad solution to close up a mausoleum.Maybe they do not have the money or want to spend more on the gravesite.Granite is the best material to use i agree with you.

This is Mt. Hope Cemetery in Logansport and is the third largest in Indiana with over 34,000 graves

That monument with soldier on top, sun was very bright so it`s not best visible but by position of soliders hands, it look to me like there sward or something is missing, like he is resting hand on sward or something.
