Okay, I'm weird, but I love old cemeteries! This one was extra fascinating for some reason. please keep them coming. I saw one the other night that was the Stepp Cemetery in Morgan County, Indiana. It was back a lane like this one and I just thought "Matt could do this so much better!" Thanks for making our evening more exciting!

Hi, this is the first video of yours I have watched. The gravestone of Lemuel Engle who died in 1897 I found at Find-A-Grave, for White Oak Cemetery in Jay County, Indiana. Would be nice if you could visit the local library or historical society to get some background info before your visits. The photography was very good, I enjoyed it. I would also poke around records to learn more about the building, if possible. The cemetery is certainly not abandoned, the grass was cut fairly recently. If abandoned many years, the trees and shrubs and vines would have overgrown everything. I have been a genealogist for the past 40 years.
Hello, I live in Tennessee and we have many old graves dating from the 1800's that are called "Tent Graves" or "Comb Graves" for their A-Framed shape. No one really knows why they were built in this design. The graves are covered by two long slabs of rock pitched in an inverted "V," like the peak of a roof. Some have iron rods for support and others have end stones that brace each end of the rocks. The biggest concentration of these burials mounds is found near the Highland Rim and the western Cumberland Plateau regions of Middle Tennessee. Oldest found dates around 1820's and stop in the early 1900's. Really enjoy your videos.
I live in east tennessee. These tents or roofs are put over the graves to keep wild hogs from digging into the graves. Back in the day when wooden coffins were used and no vaults corpses would actually be dug out of the ground.

Bugs on certain types of markers, those with concrete especially, are after salts and other minerals. My Daddy used to make headstones, and he told me about this.

I have one of those little lizard's that hangs out on my front porch, scares me it will get in my house. It's wonderful to see the up-keep on this place considering it's in such an out of the way place. You sure go above and beyond and way off the beaten path for these episodes and I thank you, Matt. The outside of the structure looks to be in great shape. The inside was never completed??? The trash left in the area is puzzling. (Guessing is the best one can do.) It's obvious that somebody is mowing and maintaining the cemetery's basic upkeep which is a positive sign. Obviously, mowers have to be brought to the site as there is no maintenance building at the cemetery. Sad to see some of the headstones are decaying, etc. Thanks, Matt, for a great explore.

For a very old cemetery it has been pretty much kept up and the grass has been mowed. At lot of the tombstones remind me of the church cemetery in South Carolina where some of my family is buried. Some of the grave markers even go back to the 1700's. The roof on the building you looked in has a new style roofing so it does not really look that old......still very interesting though.
You need to read some of the headstones because I can't read them
Matt does general walkabouts. The channel that fully documents and reads every stone is "sidestep adventures". That's the primary job of the channel.
Well taken care of cemetery. With all the recent rain you found on the road you'd think the grass would be tall. Someone must have mowed within a few days.

i have always loved old cemeteries and love your videos too. i like to look at the names and inscriptions of the headstones. i have visited a couple of old cemeteries here in kansas. one in bonner springs was a very old abandoned one with dates from before the civil war. one in linwood had several from the civil war. it also had hornets so i didn't stay too long! keep on making these great videos about old cemeteries, they are awesome!

Hi Matt, well that place was odd to say the least and a little disconcerting seeing the bullet holes in that bottle lol. I am really not sure at all what that place is or was, it could be a new chapel project but it seems quite a walk to go to Sunday services and funerals e.t.c. The graveyard looks like it still has people stopping by to do running repairs which is nice too. Another cool video, thank you n stay safe as it looked a little hairy walking up to that "chapel". xx

I love going to old cemeteries and seeing the graves of the long forgotten Americans who once lived lives and had all the emotions as we do. They are truly time capsules for those today who care to learn or see a final glimpse of long dead Americans whose lives are now lost to time
I believe that cabin is a bug out location or hunting location for someone. It's something that's often built over time as it can be afforded. Chances are it was private property but just wasn't marked as such.
Rain, what's that? Oh I think I heard the old ones talk about that.

Every time I watch these videos where someone drives down an overgrown road in the deep woods I hear banjo music...
I’m the same as Bobbie...they hold a fascination about our past, and history. However I live in the U.K., and really enjoy “my travels “ with you Matt, and commend you for your smooth camera work, and taking the time to go slowly enough for us to see and read the wording on the stones . There seemed to be a lot of “Lemuel “ Christian names in that cemetery, which I don’t recall from other places. I find old names really fascinating too, as modern trends seem to be using old fashioned names for children ,but I don’t know about Lemuel.
You were very brave approaching that empty building,especially as you saw bullet holders, and bottles used for target practice afterwards! Glad you were not a target! Thankyou again for a really enjoyable visit .looking forward to many more.

Good find! 👍definitely 19th century. The way it rolls and sinks, no liners. The pillar type markers often represent one family buried in one area, section. The names are along each side of the 4 sided stone.
That is a newer building because of the buried electric line running to it. Looks like it has not been finished yet.

I love how respectful you are going through the cemeteries. Unfortunately we are losing so much history due to the weather. Great job. I too like to walk through cemeteries and used to do so as a child. If you ever get to Lacrosse Wisconsin or Marshfield Wisconsin check out some of the cemeteries there as they are spectacular.

Have you ever done gravestone rubbings? Old stones that aren't readable due to erosion are still readable if you place a sheet of paper over it, and rub a pastel or charcoal over. ^_^
Have you ever thought of contacting the township trustee to get the history of the site? Who donated the land, when etc. history of the grave yards would enhance your videos.
Great video. I know this hasn't been easy to do with all this crazy rain we received this year. Even The WonderingWoodsmans has been having a hard tiime. If course again here in Chicago we've been been getting a lot of rain and now flooding in the area.. Hope to be a patreon subscriber soon.

thanks to you matt-i appreciate you showing closeups of headstones- the inscriptions were a work of art-i live on kauai island in Hawaii- I'd like to show you an old japanese cemetary outside the town of koloa- there are at least two headstones of two japanese males who died or were killed in the 40's- the enigma is that both headstones have swastikas on them-go figure
You should wear bright orange, Sept through Feb. Get a hunting manual.
It's clearly being maintained, grass cut and around the stones it's weed whacked. Still an awesome find tho, watch out for all the poison ivy dude.

Building appears to be a hunting lodge being completed on "as you go" basis. Cartridge storage inserts from box seemd to a give-a-way, Must not be far off the main highway as they were able to run power to the building.

Judging from their size and placement, some of those marble markers might be footstones, which usually won’t have any inscription on them.
Are you planning to go to the east coast, I can only imagine the history lying in the graves there.

engraving in the old days was opposite the side they put it on today so a foot stone tells you which side of the headstone a body lies

that cemetery isn't abandoned, you can tell its mowed often, looks like with in the last few days
Turkeydoodlers L. It’s possible the grave sites of veterans must be kept in good condition. The law in my state, Maine, requires that any cemetery containing a veteran must be kept in good order with the grass not to exceed 2 inches in height.
There aren't any recent burials, but it is being kept up pretty nice!
That should be at least the standard rule for all !! Our vets deserve so much more RESPECT !! JS any unkept grave is a shame to the family !!

You need to take a bag of flour with you to read the gravestones. Just rub flour on the face. It fills in the engravings.
I've wondered how many old cemeteries eventually disappear.
All so fascinating and I myself love looking in old and new cemetaries...but its so sad to see these places of rest just decaying away and ending up in broken pieces...am glad am gonna be cremated and my ashes scattered back to the earth......
I often wonder why nobody ever questions things like mausoleums, the extra rooms in them that aren't accessible, things people just say as storage but nobody ever thinks" what were these people involved with, who were they involved with, the names, everything, why they're above ground and not buried underground, same reason many of the elites and illuminati dont get buried, why some have Egyptian type of things on them ,just like many of the things they believe in. I think about this all the time, especially now that we know about certain families and names and their origins and the reasons behind what they do and their beliefs."
