Love it but try explaining EVERYTHING, even if it is simple. For example, how do I upload the file you provided for frequency separation? Thank you for the free lessons though, keep it up :)
Hi Jessica, I cannot download this frequency separation action :(
I cant too
Joan Wolfie me neither
I'm having the same problem. I lost all of my actions when my computer crashed. I used to have it and now I cannot find another action as good as this one.
found a way to get it to work?
I am a total newbie (beauty blogger in ann arbor here) and this blew my mind!! will try it out on my next batch of photos :) thanks! always on point Jessica!
On low freq layer select part of face with lasso & use noise->median filter with size of Your choice, it depends from fs blur value ;)
This is the first time I got frequency separation right!!! You are one of the only photographers that I watch. You answer so man y questions and your videos get right to it!
this tutorial helped me achieve the skin correction i was trying to get! thank you for also demonstrating the quick healing brush click rate - that really helped me in my process
You should try using the Mixer Brush on the low freq layer. Its so beautiful and a little faster. It takes some getting used to tho :)
i will try that! thank you for the tip Wesley!! :D
No problem! If you're down.. I keep the Wet, Load, Mix, & Flow around 20%. And I keep the "clean brush after each stroke" setting on that is next to the other settings mentioned. The tones work best in 16 bit as well. Its so satisfying. lol :) I used to have videos but I deleted them off my channel when I got into makeup.
Thank you I'll keep a note of that and try that one some new photos I took! Your tutorials are really great, hope to bump into you and collab sometime :) I love watching what you come up with!
OMG THANK YOU! I've been looking for a way to blend together tough spots without blurring them and you just made my life so much easier!
I know I'm late but THANK YOU SO MUCH. In my version of photoshop the healing brush tool acts a little bit different and i was struggling with using it to retouch. Mixer Brush works like a charm though. I love you
As a beginner I am so thankful how you slowed this tutorial down 😅 you are literally my fav RUclipsr now bless
Your voice relaxes me for weeks.🙃
I find that your adding between the high and low layer that transparent “touchup layer” and touching up tone and color transitions by using the eye dropper tool and paint brush is very helpful. I like how keeping it below the high layer maintains the original texture detail.
hi! I'd love to see a tutorial about more... "difficult" skin from you. I use alot of the techniques from your videos, I love your editing style and separation works well for me too. However for acne prone skin, the low frequency layer doesn't always do the trick, and then I feel like I'm destroying the skin structure on the high frequency layer. Do you have any tips? Thank you ^-^
Not Jessica but in the last video she did about skin retouching she does more with the high frequency layer that might be helpful to you. Editing acne prone skin just requires a bit more patience and working on smaller sections of skin at a time.
Cassandra Rudolph Hi! Thank you, I'll check her last video out. Ah yea, it does take long, but I often find that, when I zoom out after editing acne prone skin, it just looks.. untidy. Maybe I need more practice 😄
I recommend the patch tool to get rid of pimples and acnes and other large blemishes.
CottonTheRabbit that or the heal/clone tool in Lightroom also
I like the way you call yourself out when you think you're over doing things. "Hey, lets not go overboard here!". Great tutorial 👍
Your so pleasant to listen to and learn from. I'm a model turn photographer who is horrible at this but you've give me confidence .
just subscribed you because your contents suits me well to learn photography. i love to do photoshoot as simple as possible, with natural light. you explained things on point. "why you should do this" "why you should not do that", its very educating! looking forward for more!
I never thought of blending with the high frequency layer off! Looks easier that way! Awesome, thank you!
thank you so much for watching :) !! glad you picked up a tip or two :D
Jessica, I just wanted to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH both for this tutorial and for this action! It is amazing and it worked perfectly!
ya girl's not gonna skip the ad, you deserve some $ for this tutorial! thanks for creating such an informative vid Jessica
You are one of my favorites to learn from. I'm a real newbie so I appreciate you very much! I'm so new that I'm not sure how to even load or add the wonderful action that you shared with us. Is there a video on how to load it into photoshop? Anyway, thank you, again for your wonderful , creative and generous spirit!
Thank you Jessica!! Very helpful!!
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you for sharing the action and making the process so understandable. I really enjoy all your videos.
Excellent Jessica, I use imagenomic portraiture as it saves a lot of time and provides very good results, but this method if you really want the best of best results and have the time is great. Thank you.
OH GOD THANKS GOD I FOUND THIS TUTORIAL! Really really thank you for that. Jessica you are a Goddess
I like the way you use the heal skin tool on the low Frequency layer. I have seen it done with bluring and it makes the skin not look right. Your version is much nicer.
When I opened the action in photoshop, it separated into 'Texture' and 'Skin' instead of high frequency and low frequency. Is this the same thing? If not, do you know how I could change it? Thanks for the amazing tutorial, your videos really helped me elevate my photography.
Abby Carton yes love it's he same thing! Low frequency = skin (the evenness of the skin tone is edited here) and high frequency = texture (pimples, raised bumps, scars)
Thank you so much!
Abby Carton I was wondering too. Thanks for asking this. When I click my image in high frequency, it's almost pure white with a outline of my subject's face, so I can't see the editing changes in this layer. Did you have the same problem? :/
Doris F. Just checked and it doesn't open an outline on mine.
Thanks for answering. I'm still a bit confused.. Before completing the frequency separation layer, what setting did you have it on for the opacity in the "apply image" section? My image is completely white unless I have the opacity at 0%..
Looks great, thank u for sharing your work! Teachers are the best!
Jessica thank you very much for tutorials, thanks to them after a long time I made a step forward in retouching. I needed :) You are the best :)
amazing work girl
Thank you for the free action for frequency separation...what a sweetheart thing to do :)
Your videos are great! Good job! Thank you very much for sharing with us!
Looove your videos Jessica! I would like to see a video on how to retouch a picture that have been photographed with harsh light. I use studio lightning and sometimes the pictures can come out pretty harsh and then the frequency separation action dosen´t do the trick. And it just gets so hard to make the face look soft even though the rest of the face looks exactly as sharp as i wish. Also as mentioned in the comments below, a tutorial of more difficult skin with alot of acne and redness. Anyway always enjoy your vids! You´re such a talent! :)
It's better to use the Lasso tool (with feathering) then Gaussian Blur on the Low Frequency layer. It'll smooth out the imperfections a billion times faster. This is where you spend the bulk of your time and it's tedious sampling the surrouding areas. It's easier to fix the under eye or any dark pigmentations (scars, bumps, etc) in the skin on the High Frequency layer using the Clone Stamp tool. I prefer to set the Clone Stamp tool mode to "lighten" for dark areas, and "darken" for shiny areas.
TBH the *FREE* frequency separation action is a waste of time. The process can be manually done in seconds with better control.
why don't you create a tutorial for it then, since you're out and about just debunking other people's efforts.
They're many ways to do the same thing in photoshop bud and the lasso tool for frequency separation isn't the best method at all and sometimes it takes unnecessary tones/colors from outside the area you want to work on and makes it worse. The only method I know of that's the fastest and most accurate is the layer mask brush technique. When you duplicate the low frequency layer to make the high frequency one, duplicate another layer to sit between the high and low frequency. Make it invisible and then set your low freq and high freq layers. After you've set up the high freq and low freq layers, make the layer in between the two visible again and apply a heavy gaussian blur to it. Blur it to remove almost all blotchy spots and then put a black layer mask on that layer. Take a soft brush with a low flow and paint white on the layer mask for the areas you want to even out. Make that an action and use it every time, It's more precise and faster than the lasso tool method and the clone method while giving you more control of tone blur since you're using a soft brush with low flow. But as I said, they're many ways to do things in photoshop, just depends on the preferred method of the user.
Oh man, thank you for this video! When is the coloring video coming out? I'm excited to learn from it!
Wow just last night i was looking for retouching tutorials! Thank you for this!!
please request anything else you'd like to see!! thank you for watching :)
Thank you! I can't wait to try this!
This is so helpful! Thank you ❤️❤️
Thank you Jessica! Practice makes perfect and even though I have no idea what your talking about, I will one day !
You are my hero Jessica!
Thanks for the action!
Great Job as usual Jessica, Super helpful thank you for putting time into this :)
hi Jessica! luv u r videos.
just a question...u correct skin before or after edit the photo...color...effects..that stuffs. or it doesn't matter?
Again good tutorial! Thank you Jessica, you always inspiring me to photograph and edit! :))
omg im so happy i found you!!!
How do I open the file/action in Photoshop?
Hi dear, thank you for the tutorial but the link to download the action isn't working... please, help :)
So helpful! Thank you so much!! Can't wait for part 2 :)
Great video. I am very new into retouching.
Have downloaded the Frequency Separation Action, may I know how do I install it? I tried google but it didn't work though. Your advise is very much appreciated.
Love the tutorials! Thanks you Jess.
thank you so much!!
WOW I've never seen the healing brush method. I'm guessing this is better than the lasso tool with a gaussian blur right
I don't get these results just using the patch tool lmao. I've never trie this method and I've been using Photoshop for over 10 years!! Just proves you can always learn something new!
Je ne connaissais cette technique, je vais tout de suite l'adopter
Is this FS Action different for your previous one or are you just working mainly on the "skin" level and not so much on the "texture" level Another great tutorial! Thanks so much.
If you image is 8 bits and make same bit then apply frequency separtion action. For eg if your image is 8 bit and this frequency separation action design for 16 bits it is works perfectly.
Thanks so much for the Photoshop action
Jess, the action download is ot available anymore... Do you still have a link to download the Frequency Separation Action?
thanks so much for your action. it helps me alot
this is so helpful, thanks!!
helpful as always thank you jessica
thank you so much!
Hey Jessica! Tell the people how does the seperation works. Not to clean and smoth it up...! Its important to understand the physicals of this technic. The low is not for the color. Great work
Thank you so much Jessica!!!!!!
I really love this tutorial, your instructions are super clear and i get how to clear the skin now (just need to practice haha), i just have a question, i have an old version of photoshop (the C5) and i was wondering if your frequency seperation action would still work with that version? Thank you in advance ^^
I'm not sure if it would, but try it. If it doesn't you can find out how to make your own frequency separation action online. It isn't that hard, I did it a couple years ago when I had no idea how to use photoshop!
Lovely tutorial and pic especially with the color grading. Quick question, how is the healing brush tool working with the frequency separation? I’ve been using the lasso tool. And also when I use the healing brush on the low frequency and then make the high frequency all the blemishes are visible again. Not sure where I go wrong. Hope you can help, thanks in advance.
I downloaded the frequency separation, but i don't know how to open it in Photoshop. Please help me.
Max Lopez easy let me know if you need help
Action is not available
Jessica, how did you import the frequency action to the layers panel? Love your vids btw!! Thanks❤️
Have you ever used the liquify tool? is it handy?
Love your work!
Do you recommend any photoshop/photography/Lightroom books to learn more?
Hey Jess, was wondering if you could re-upload the action! Please and thanks =)
For the high frequency layer, you use the spot healing brush to edit? I've been doing low frequency edits for a while, but I never really touch the high frequency layer, so I'm more curious about how that works.
Hi, can someone please explain to me how can I install the frequency separation because I don't know how to do it ^^'
open it then Photoshop will open. open the photo you wanna edit. then from the windows choose the action segment. you 'll see the frequency separation. view the group first then choose the segment under it and under it play button will be clickable. so click it and say okay to anything. then comment here if you will have the same problem with me. that It won't change anything
Hi Jessica,
My concern related to your work:
For every photoshoot that you do with models, (Like the one in your videos) how in what percentage do you use lightroom in Exchange to PS? am I wrong to say that you do first LR and then post process all the picture through PS?
thanks
that was amazing
thanx for sharing
When i use the healing brush tool on the low frequency and try to blend in the colors, it looks horible, you can see the brushstroke. Altough I am doing tiny movements. It's especially hard to get a nice result when the contrast of the skin tones is a bit hire (like shadows on the cheeks) Any ideas?
you have to raise the feathering to about 30 px
+lisarettenbacher you need to ensure that the healing brush is set to only sample 'current layer' not 'current and below'
Thanks for the answer Aaron. I really appreciate that :) And try it again of course
the violetspell doesnt work :'(
Nice video, but how about just using Portraiture plugin to apply Portraiture to the picture, what is the difference???
this video is great! thank you so much !!
you're very welcome!!
Thank you for the tutorial and the free action now I gotta go practice lol
Glad to have watched this video :)
i love all of your vídeos :)
Hello. May I ask how do you import and export your photos into and out Photoshop? What I actually do is import the images to Lr and then select "Edit in" then choose Photoshop. Is this a good way or is there a more recommended way?
This really help me. Thank you :)
Hi Jessica ! Thanks very much for the video. What is the pixel radius you use when making the gaussian blur to create the low frequency ?
Jessica, you're awesome, thanks for sharing ;)
HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY LOAD THE ACTION THOUGH
Do you use a tablet or still a mouse when retouching?
hi i wanna know what type of program u are using ,? how can i get a same one as yours ? thank u :)
Do you do this with a regular mouse? or a trackpad? Seems really inconvenient always having to click and drag with your finger or a mouse?
She uses a tablet to edit :)
When or would you do dodge & burn?
I can't seem to sample color. The healing tool will only sort of copy what I'm sampling instead of only the color. Am I doing something wrong? Because on the tutorial your action shows "low frequency" and "high frequency" at the layers section. Mijn shows "Texture" and "skin'
Thanks for this video Jessica :)
amazing! by the way, do you use Magic Mouse for this? cause I have one but it feels so inaccurate
Probably a wacom tablet
Hey Jessica, its not possible to open the link for downloading the frequency seperation action. where can i get ti?
I can't seem to find the high/Low Frequency action options under the actions bar. I've opened the Frequency Separation file in layers but there's nothing in the folder.
Actually high end retouching is done with D&B (local and global)
:) impresive, and is work greate for me, I like ... thank you for your "action" ...
thank you!! waiting for the part 2
thank you Danielle :D !!
Ok I'm super new to photoshop and I looked up how to open an action, but this one won't "play". When I hover over the play button it shows a circle with a line through it. You know like the kind that means "you can't do this". What's up with that? How am I supposed to use this action?
When u edit the high frequency you use the brush right??
why the texture layer turns white when I release the action ?
I'm also having this issue. did you find a solution?
do you still have this issue?i know how to solve it,i can tell you if you want.
Do you know how to fix this?
It's because you're on 'add' not 'subtract'.
and how do i do that
How do I blend the skin and texture layers? I used the healing brush on the skin layer, and it is great, but when I activate the texture layer, it does not take in consideration anything that I did on "skin_copy".
Hi Jessica I tried to download the free separation action but could not get it. Do i have to download a software for photoshop to acknowledge it? Not sure
Assuming you have photoshop CS6, go to the window dropdown menu, and press actions. On the dropdown for the new actions menu, click load action. Find the file Jess gave, and it will show on the menu. Click it once to open, and press the play button. Should work from there!
what issue do you have when downloading? ill try to fix it, sorry about that!
yes when downloading it.
I'm a photographer new to photoshop! I downloaded the frequency separation file but when I select it in my actions, I am unable to "play" it and it will tell me "skin is unavailable" or "gaussian blur is unavailable"
