when you "apply image" the technique in the tutorial is for 16-bit. for 8-bit you want to choose subtract, scale: 2, offset: 128, and do not invert. proceed with linear light setting.
I swear, you deserve everything! This tutorial was so easy and fun to follow. I am so gracious someone like you is out here teaching me these things so that my images can look better. Thank you Jessica, I am so thankful and will always remain a subscriber and follower!
Your so fun to watch! Been working Photoshop for 15 years and have encountered various tutorials! Gotta admit, you bring a certain charm to your tutorials. Good Stuff!
thank you sooo soo much!!! i had a photo shoot yesturday and i was worried a lot that i will spend too much time with retouch! Learning from your tutorial i spend minimum time but i am enjoying the effect !!! thank you again !!
Jessica, you are so down to earth and i really love all your content. I'm new to photography and your videos have helped me learn so much in such a short amount of time. To top it all off I absolutely love Michigan, especially Detroit.
just wanted to say....uhh your amazing. Been editing for a while but just started following you and some of your techniques and my photos have DRASTICALLY improved. Thx again and keep doing what your doing
Jessica, thanks for the amazing tutorials! You press Alt to select a sample, and then continuously blend in colours, although you haven't mentioned how often you're re-sampling. Are you re-sampling a colour every time you click?
I took a second to see where you're cross-hair was and I think I just answered my own question... buuuut I'm sure many others would love to see your response. thanks for the great tutorials!
I live by this tutorial and your coloring one now. I just attempted your routines last night and they made my picture look so stunning. Thank you so much for these 2 videos!
Thanks for a straight forward approach to retouching. I generally avoid skinwork beyond handling blemishes since a) I think it takes too much time/work and b) still learning the tricks of PS.
+Joseph Rose Of course! Trust me sometimes retouching is such a nightmare ;-; I wish I could just pass it onto someone, but that costs money. Soooo I will just do it all myself :$
This was very helpful. I have applied this tecnique on a flattened skin of a 3d model. Creating this skin from a patchwork of other skins I ended up with Frankenstein. The texture was ok, but I needed to blend the colours. This method turned out to be great :) Saved me)
Jessica, sorry, have a question for you. Great video, but from 6:00 min I cant understand (and its not working with my photoshop version) - how u can retouch an empty layer? I dont have that - Current layer on top.
I am 7 months late replying to this but - Make sure that the clone stamp tool is set to "current & below", your empty layer should be one layer above your 'skin' layer, and you can now stamp the color from the layer below onto your empty layer.
nice one but my suggestion is instead of using clone stamp tool at 7.00 and ahead you can use brush tool with very low flow and sample colors around the skin and paint it..in this you get more control, becoz while using clomp stamp tool it always chnges source when we move cursor ,so paint is good option .
Thank you "Photoshop Master" for not doing anything crazy. I have renamed my soft brush to "nice fluffy brush". Seriously though, best tutorial by far.
Is that just me, or when I make the "Skin 2" layer and then use the clone stamp tool, it's not working? I don't know what kind of trick you did but to me it looks like there's nothing to copy when I press alt D:
Hey, I have one proble, hope you can help - when I'm using from example brush tool and click Alt+right click the color of the brush doesn't change, it's grey and I can't fix it to be as the color of the skin. Thank you
Nice yideo. I know it's a bit old but when you use frequency separation do you ever separate the texture into fine, medium coarse textures. This let's you work on retouching items like wrinkles, scars an crows feet without touching the finer textures. This is how the Darktable Retouch module works and I was trying to do similar in Adobe products.
thank you for this Jessica, this is a 2014 video so I am a bit late but I would like to request this same video but on a black model please. Some steps in this especially with regards to whitening, highlighting etc are very different on dark skin.
I love your soothing voice, Jessica. Thank you for all the information on Photoshop. How do I download the Photoshop on my iPad? Do I have to buy it? Please let me know. Thank you once again.
Hi Jessica, great tutorial but I do have a question. What is the concept behind the "apply image thingy" meaning what is it doing to the image? I'm sorry I sometimes want to understand what Photoshop is doing behind the scenes.. Any idea? Thanks much and keep up the great work!!
It's a great video... The way you explain is very clear and it's nice to listen to you. I just have one question: what kind of layers do you make later one? EX. 6:03?
when i invert my applied image (texture) its completely grey..?? no texture. i followed the steps as directed. any idea whats going on? and how to fix?
Hey how are you? So on the second step Which is the Texture. My Scale is no longer coming up I did it the first 5 times now for some reason it is no longer there as an option. Did I disable it by mistake? and how do I bring it back up? Thanks
Dear Jessica, can you tell me what programm you use for those desctop videos! I can only find programms that cost nothing but i dont trust them! You already know that i love everything that you make! Best Photographer
your work is absolutely stunning and would you like to teach how to make final and save after retouching skin like dodge and burn, color correction, and others stuff after complete edited and which Later can i pick to save and final final images? can i save original background layer with visible others retouching layer. Because my retouching super horrible after saving or export. I didn't have retouching issues and it looks flawless before saving? I really confused which layer is best to save or I try merge visible Layer also. i hope i will receive wonderful reply with tips from you. I am new and hobbies photographer. please help me.
Hi! Sorry I have a silly question, I am new to photoshop and I am following all your steps but when I go to add image on the texture, it goes like white and not grey, is there any particular reason why? and does it matter? or can I continue to do it on a white-ish background? thanks!
Thank you so much for these video (and the part 1 also). Just finished editing a couple of photos and I love the results and proud of myself for not using all sorts of actions
Thank you for the helpful video. One problem I had was your gaussian blur affected the entire layer. In another YT tutorial I was taught to make a skin mask layer (omitting eyes, eyebrows and lips). That layer was converted to a smart object then gaussian blur and a high pass filter applied for texture. I did try your way and selecting the skin area but I got a halo effect when using vivid light blend. Could please you address this and also male skin retouching? Keep up the good work.
at around 5:00 i'm trying to use the healing brush tool but it won't do anything. i'm doing exactly what you're doing and when I left click to use the healing brush its just not doing anything. I don't know what's going on.
Thanks for the video. If I have a black & white image, the steps need to be different, do you know how do to achieve the same thing with a black and white image ? thanks
When retouching skin like Cleans up Blemishes, Frequency separation and color correction and with group each then which layer is better to save as final images?
Im so excited to use this technique but like Andrea Fulgenzi said below, when I make the Skin 2 layer, and try using the clone stamp, there is nothing to grab. Am I missing a step? Really want to use this awesome trick.....can you advise Jessica ?
So I dont know what the problem is, but when I do the texture part, I go apply image, add, 100%, invert and its not gray, but weird dark colors and when I go forward and then change the layer from normal to linear light, its just really dark and nasty. Any idea? Thanks
how did the texture layer just become the grey texture pic?? I dont think i got that. The step i saw was "apply image" which is to apply the texture back to the skin layer.
does anybody know why do you duplicate the background layer when retouching in photoshop ? why not simply create new layer for every change you made? help will be highly aprreciated
I need help!! Okay, so I basically did all the layers as you did on my own photo. Now I want to use the liquify tool, but I cannot get it to show! Please help! Thanks!
Hey Jessica, I've been having problems with my Gaussian Blur! When I move the slider, the selected area doesn't become blur. And when the slider goes beyond a certain point, the selected area becomes dark grey! I can't figure out why and I've watched similar frequency separation vids just to make sure my settings are right. Would love to hear from you! THANKSSS! :))
+Pierre Lim Are you sure you're not the right layer?! Make sure you actively select the right one, ALSO, make sure the top layer is turned OFF so you can see it become blurred :P Sometimes we forget to turn the top layer off if we are making changes to the middle layer...
When I try to do the high frequency layer, I do everything she did with all the specifications and the image is completely gray, meaning, without any detail, so whenever I make it visible again, You can only see the gaussian blur and no detail. Anyone know why this happens?
when you "apply image" the technique in the tutorial is for 16-bit. for 8-bit you want to choose subtract, scale: 2, offset: 128, and do not invert. proceed with linear light setting.
hi, could you explain more about it, please? I don't understand what you mean at all. I would appreciate your help :)
Exactly what i learn from Piximperfect.
Great tutorial! I love how it doesn't look photoshopped, just looks natural! LOVE LOVE!
I swear, you deserve everything! This tutorial was so easy and fun to follow. I am so gracious someone like you is out here teaching me these things so that my images can look better. Thank you Jessica, I am so thankful and will always remain a subscriber and follower!
The best tutorial ever. I am not scared of Frequency Separation anymore..LOL Thank you, Jessica!
+Svetlana Brooks It was pretty intimidating at first to me too, glad I could help Svetlana!!
Your so fun to watch! Been working Photoshop for 15 years and have encountered various tutorials! Gotta admit, you bring a certain charm to your tutorials. Good Stuff!

Maurice Clay thank you so much for your support!!
I have learned to use the settings Add/inverse/2/0 for a 16 bit-image. For a 8 bit-image you should use Subtract/no inverse/2/128.
Jessica, thanks for the amazing tutorials! You press Alt to select a sample, and then continuously blend in colours, although you haven't mentioned how often you're re-sampling. Are you re-sampling a colour every time you click?

THE best and simple explained tutorial!

+Jasmine Hope thank you so much for watching! I'm glad I could help :D !!
I just found your tutorials. I got PS for Christmas to make my own book covers and learn photo manipulation. :) I am enjoying your videos.
This is definitely going to make my life WAY easier! I retouch faces often.
11:41 'I like to have a copy. Because if I make a mistake, I just shut my computer off-and that won't really be great for this tutorial so…' 😂
+Edwin Contreras ?? why
He was quoting something funny she said... smart one
This was very helpful. I have applied this tecnique on a flattened skin of a 3d model. Creating this skin from a patchwork of other skins I ended up with Frankenstein. The texture was ok, but I needed to blend the colours. This method turned out to be great :) Saved me)
Wow, great technique and i'm so grateful that you are giving so high value away for free!
I did everything you said with the stamp and healing tools with the copied layers...but nothing is changing on the skin copy :(
Same with me
Have you figured out the problem? I need to know haha
@@joyfromthemountain offset must be 128 and blending is subtract
same, cant figure out
@@adirahmanbinmdishak2314 Not functioning either
7:30 "I don't even know if there's such a thing as photoshop master"
Isn't that Piximperfect
sure he is...he is the GOD of photoshop and then.... are PS creators and then others :D :D
This is a great tutorial. Thank you so much. I've watched numerous videos on retouching and this is by far the best in my opinion. Great job!
Add to my knowledge. Thank you for sharing nice tutorial
I just found this tutorial and used it on my assignment- it's like magic!! Thank you so much :)

This was fabulous thank you so much for sharing :)
THe healing brush is not working to me like this. It doesn't do anything even with the same setting as you have.
Set to current and below layer :)
Love this tutorial!
you should mention that your working with 16bits if it was 8 on apply image you´ll use subtract 2 / 128 offset
This is amazing. Thank you.
good tutorial, thanks!
Thank you, great tutorial.
I tried doing this but for some reason my Mac won’t let me press Apply Image. Any advice?
