Subscribed!!! Took photoshop as an upper level elective, clearly I should have just sent my money to you. Keep dropping content... the community needs it.
Thankyou so so much!! This helped me alooooooot. I'm a photographer and have started to get paying clients, so this vid taught me a lot that my uni never has!
Aaron, you are THE best! All I know about Ps is because of you! Thank you!!! Quick question: on 6/18/2014 you also published a frequency separation tutorial, where you used the lasso tool on your blur layer (low frequency) to improve 'blotchy' areas (aka, to improve color). On this newer tutorial, the 24th day of Ps, you opt to use the brush tool at 5% flow. Is using the brush tool on this low frequency layer a 'better' tool than what you previously described (lasso tool)?
Thank you for the tutorial and the action! One quick question, shouldn't you have to create a new layer for the HF retoching and sample current layer and below instead of doing the clone stamping straight out in the HF layer itself in order to make the edit non destructive?. Thank you!
Excellent. I have one question tthough. When we are retouching the HF layer (texture), we only sample the current layer. Therefore modifying it. Can it be done non-destructively ?
Hi! The goal is to keep the original image untouched. Your high frequency layer is separate from the original image, which is make makes it a non-destructive process.☺
Great video👍 why are there two different actions for FS 8 & 16 bit. I know they are created differently in apply image but cannot see any difference in the created layers?
Thank you so very much for this so helpul tutorial and for this action which works incredibly well and makes everything so much easier!! For those like me who are searching for the Photoshop action, it is included in the: Download the Sample Image link which is the first of the list.
Wow! This is an awesome tool! It seems a lot easier than using the healing tools. This is one of the episodes I can see myself using a lot. Thanks you.
very interesting method to insert this layer and brush but I am very happy having seen your previous tuto using lasso, feather and gaussian blur i find faster and more efficient than painting.
I think the issue with doing that is that it would blur the texturing as well as the color shading, separating the frequency lets you blur the color to even it out but you still retain texturing and details on the face
@@dinierto I prefer the color blending here while the lasso blurring seemed to have blurred the color so maybe that is why Aron is using color blending here instead of lasso the area and then blur.
Hi and thanks for your time. I am stuck on this section as the application of the actions creates an almost blacked out overlay of the texture frequency. There HF layer is so dark i can't see below it. Can anyone help how i get this to be like in the video. Thank you for your help
Recently I had the opportunity to take headshots. One of my subjects had a large blemish on his forehead. This tutorial and PS action, along with the blemish retouching tutorial, helped me smooth out his blemish without looking fake. Thank you for sharing!!
Do you prefer blemish removal before or you do it in FS?Just curious. Also I use this FS teqnique all the time but the way I learned I do local dodge and burn before FS and global dodge and burn after the FS. DO you have any thought of that or advice? Thanks in advance
Hi Aroon great tutorials but particularly this one how do we create action?? Or is it in after 30 days of free photoshop Or did i miss it on previous lessions? Anyway loving it cant wait to buy a lessons from u after i finish 30 day free lessons.
I've seen some tutorials advocating a "new" method of frequency separation using Noise>Median instead of Blur>Gaussian to retouch I haven't found anything on Google to explain why. What are the advantages or disadvantages in using this new method?
I'm loving this series. But I really want to thank you for using only a mouse. I have had other tutors say that similar steps cannot be done with a mouse. I thought that was absurd. I am quite proficient with a mouse, actually ambidextrous with it. Better, in fact, with my left hand. So thanks.
Lots of amazing questions unanswered here. Need to find who innovated FS in the first place and the actual mechanics behind it not just the steps ppl use as long as it just works (for them)
PHlearn has an older tutorial on FS and explains step by step on to how to start from scratch and the blending part is also different than the one with color blending here. As far as who invented FS that Aron never mentions?
I have a problem with my clone stamp tool, patch tool. When I try to define an area with the close stamp it doesn't fully define it for example for blemishes. It fades the pimple but it doesnt sample the area same with the patch tool
It looks like using the brush on a layer between HF and LF does the same thing as dodge and burn, so what is the purpose of doing this step and then dodge and burn to finish up?
He is just blending color at a very 1% or 3% flow and also keeping the color on a separate layer you can adjust if you over do it like lower the opacity.
Thanks for this tutorial. Could you please explain how to create the texture layer? I have been trying to do it by going to apply image and subtracting (scale 2, offset 128) but all I get is a grey canvas with no texture.
8 bit for JPG low Res and 16 bit Raw Hi Res images. I think the steps to create Action are same; but never hurts to experiment between 8 bit and 16 bit and see what results you get.
I always use frequency separation to retouch skin and watched this video to see if his process was the same as mine/if I could learn sth from it. I love PHLEARN but I don't think this video is a good one. - The action also needs to ask for a high pass radius. There shoud not be any colour on the HF layer. - The retouching is not a good example of how you want to retouch skin: On the low frequency layer, he really messed up with the important shadows which sculpted her face making her look 'flattened'. On the high frequency layer, what was important was to get rid of the prominent uneven skin on her forehead and between her eyerbrows... which he did not.
Thanks for video.... Sir plz help help.sir. I am from gujarat. Sir .i am use nikon z7. and only tiles and marble photography so how can largh marble image into 10 feet-8feet and so photo can click into raw file or tiff file pls teach me that is my confusion answer me can u make tutorile on this confusion pls solve my confusion
Can anyone advise me. The action setup itself works fine for me on my imac, presenting me with all required layers etc. However, when I select the brush tool and try to sample the colour (using 'option' key + click) the colour sampled always goes to my background colour setting on the toolbar, making it practically impossible to carry out the procedure effectively. Any ideas how I can get it to set as foreground colour?
I deff like the older one it is more of a step by step guide on FS; but I do like the color blending here instead of blurring. This is very simplified and you don't learn how to create FS on your own.
Ppl PLEASE never skip the commercials in his videos♥️ this is the least we can do to thank him...
Thank you, Mr Aaron.
I just started a career in graphics designing. Thank you for making photoshop simple and precise.
Same here. Started this year too
My go to teacher. Love this series!
I'm kinda jealous of your perfect posture sitting on that chair (thanks for the video, very helpful)

I thought it was gonna be a boring episode... AND THEN HE SEPARATED THE TEXTURES LIKE A GOD.
Also, one final point. Displaying the Shortcut keys on the video sets phlearn apart from all the other photoshop videos!!!!
Your videos are amazing. Still struggling a bit with the skin but editing the HF for fixing pimples, loose hairs, etc worked amazing.
Thankyou so so much!! This helped me alooooooot.
I'm a photographer and have started to get paying clients, so this vid taught me a lot that my uni never has!
Total beginner with frequency separation but this tutorial and action made it a breeze. Thank you!!!
never knew there was something like this! Phlearn is da best!

I think the older lasso Blur method blurred the color and that is probably why he is now using the color blending instead.
Efforts made to tute are of high level ..well done thanks ..
Another great video, this example really shows the value of color smoothing. Wonder if there is also a different way to remove skin shine?
I just love how you say 'Fantastic' 😍
Thank you for the tutorial and the action! One quick question, shouldn't you have to create a new layer for the HF retoching and sample current layer and below instead of doing the clone stamping straight out in the HF layer itself in order to make the edit non destructive?. Thank you!
Good point!
Like create new blank layer and Clone stamp and choose below layer only; I think you can do that.
Excellent. I have one question tthough. When we are retouching the HF layer (texture), we only sample the current layer. Therefore modifying it. Can it be done non-destructively ?

Frequency separation has always been a favorite of mine. I just need to be more subtle with it.

Is there a particular reason you prefer this method of the lasso tool selecting method or the mixer brush method?
this man will be sent to haven .
Bravo, your videos are the best
Thanks for another great tutorial.
Impressive! Thank you.
great lesson. really awesome
Is there a good tutorial for removing tan lines from smart watches 😵💫 phlearn you’re awesome and thank you!
Recently I had the opportunity to take headshots. One of my subjects had a large blemish on his forehead. This tutorial and PS action, along with the blemish retouching tutorial, helped me smooth out his blemish without looking fake. Thank you for sharing!!
Great tips Aaron. You make things look easy. I was wondering about the action link. I cannot find it in the description!
Here is the link from Phlearn:

@@GabyAwad Thanks for finding the link!
@@GabyAwad I just downloaded the sample image and psd file from Phlearn, and the action is included in that (it's just not mentioned). Just FYI.

Where is the Frequency Separation Action you said we could download? Can't find it. Help
It is download folder.

many people asked how to create this action, it's simple, and you can google "frequency separation" to do it.
Thank you.
Can the action be used on subjects other than humans?

Yes I'm wondering this as well. It's cool they have an action for you to download but I'd like to know how to do it myself!
Here you can learn the step by step to creating FS ruclips.net/video/ldhG9fmgC7o/видео.html

8 bit for JPG low Res and 16 bit Raw Hi Res images. I think the steps to create Action are same; but never hurts to experiment between 8 bit and 16 bit and see what results you get.

I agree with you
But I think this video for those who start to learn the photoshop but not for those who are already know how to do this.
the best
thanks i finally got it.....
My problem is when I do HF is smooths out way too much! The surrounding text is normal with a gaping smooth part
Where can I find the link?
thank you master !

Hello. Just press X on the keyboard to swap foreground and background colours. Press D to default to black and white as the 2 colours, if needed. :)
Did anyone see the link to the Pro tutorial he mentioned at the end? I didnt see anything pop-up or anything in the description for it
Here is the link - phlearn.com/tutorial/amazing-power-frequency-separation-retouching-photoshop/
I don't see Action down load link
Arron, no link to follow :(
Why does the texture layer still retain colour though?
You are suppose to just correct texture issues like blemishes on HF layer and the color layer below is just for blending tones, color.
There's no link for action in the video description !!!
Why did you change your method of using freq separation? You're video from 7 years ago is very different and uses a blur method
I deff like the older one it is more of a step by step guide on FS; but I do like the color blending here instead of blurring. This is very simplified and you don't learn how to create FS on your own.
frequency separation from 6 years ago is better imo
Where is the Action file????

A lot of BLABLA, a lot of time spent to adjust colors but... NO explanation how to create HF layer !!! To download action file is not an explanation !
you forgot to tell people that POINT SAMPLE is not to good...5x5 or 11x11
But i see that texture is lost.........

Keep it up!
She has hair on her cheeks that I removed. Not judging her. I have those hairs on my face too but I shave them. 😅
its just changing the color. not smoothing at all
Why did you use FS actions for the tutorial? Disappointed. ☹️
