Portrait Pro retouching program has been a game changer for me. You have to know what you are doing though when you use it because with any retouching it can be overdone. Best part is you can save your retouching as a preset and then if you are retouching several headshots, you just apply the preset in the click of a button. I am not sponsored by Portrait Pro. I think it's a best kept secret that I wanted to share with photographers who like me are trying to save time on retouching without outsourcing.
Very well explained without going down any 'dark alleys'! Prior to your FS technique I used to use Filter-Blur-Gaussian Bur, add layer mask and paint over lips and eyes to reveal, Thanks again, wonderful.
hi mark, might be worth mentioning that these settings at the apply image stage on the high frequency layer are for 16-bit depth images,8-bit depth images have a different setting at the apply layer stage.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for this tutorial, I think the result is not as natural as I expected, but I suppose we have to test and try with several combinations to get what we want. Thanks again, regards!
Thank you so much for this, been so afraid to get in to photoshop but the Clarity brush in LR just doesn't cut it any more...the editing on this video makes it so simple to follow along with the steps and can't wait to try this out!
Mark Wallace is the man always has been always will be! great video once again. there are a lot of things you can do with frequency separation. very powerful tool. its been around a long time I been using it for many years.
No I think you have to understand WHY! Otherwise you just remember things and you’re not able to do other things cause you only can do what someone else showed you...but good video anywaz
16bit image, so correct settings in the Apply Image dialog box should be: Channel RGB tick Invert check box - Blending should be Add - Scale 2 - Offset 0. The difference won't be huge, but there is one.
Nice technique! It would be awesome to see a comparisation with the skin glow tool and that other skin tool in ACDcee Ultimate compared to Photoshop. I think this is pretty similar. Great howto video though!! :)
Why when I do this is my image going completely black rather than grey with the visible high frequencies? :\ I have a lifelong feud going on with Photoshop. I DO NOT get on with it at all.
It isn't destructive since you can always mask out what you don't want. I know many pro retouchers that use it very frequently, but add a lot more work in between. In other words, it's not used exclusively for the final retouch, but it is still being used for many as part of the retouch.
Hi Mark. Thanks for another great video. I have a question that I hope you or someone on here can help with. When I open my raw image in Lightroom and adjust my highlights, wb, exposure... and then select open in Photoshop, it doesn't let me go further. When the image opens in photoshop from lightroom, I can't make the layer copies or apply the gaussian blur. If I open the raw image straight into photoshop and bypass lightroom, all the functions are available. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the functionality is different? I am using the latest versions of both programs as I have the subscription. Thanks
I would like to see someone use the skin retouching on a face that isn't 20 years old. Maybe a 50 year old executive. There a lot of one click plugins that can retouch a young smooth face.
Mark, when I try to do the Gaussian Blur you do at 5:47, I see no change happening. I have the layer on. The high frequency layer off. What am I doing wrong?
Yes, I've checked preview and I've selected the correct layer. This is typical for me. LOL!! Good news, though, for some reason it started working about 5 minutes after I reached out. Thank you, Mark. You are an excellent teacher. I've learned so much from your tutorials.
The biggest secret of the frequency separation technique is ... Do not use it! The professionals do not use it, they only use dodge & burn (local & global)
One minute into the video and I already can tell the results will be wax-like skin structure. Do you do that on purpose? I mean teaching a way of retouching for the lazy without a sense for quality results?
I agree, I'm not a retoucher, and I can't say that I'm a professional photographer but I didn't like the result too, it looks unnatural. Could you please recommend some useful techniques or videos?
Freq. Sep. is used very broadly in the industry, but much more subtly than how Mark demonstrated it. He even mentioned that he was going heavy-handed so it was easily seen in the video.
@@Friseal1 Yes, if only people would actually listen to the words being stated, and not jump to conclusions and/or opinions based on something they have missed.
Thanks a lot Adorama, Thanks a lot Mark! You've been my mentor since years! God bless you and all your dear ones!

16bit are Raw images ..the subtract settings applied ..8 bit are JPEGs ..
The way Mark explained was so easy to follow and understand. Thanks Mark and please show us more of your technique :D Happy New Year.
Mark, you just made this process painless to learn, thank you so much sir! As always keep up the good work!!!!!!
Unreal videos on this channel. I am constantly coming back here to see what's new. Thanks for everything @Adorama
Mark thanks again for a wonderful informative tutorial. This is the best frequency separation instructional video I watched thus far!
Mark, thanks for the many years of valuable knowledge. I consider you to be one the tops in your field. May 2019 be a great year for you.
Finally! A video I can understand! Thank u!

Awesome video, as always, Mark. I just tried this technique and it really worked great. So easy, man. Thank you very much.
What size bit is your image? Isn’t there a difference when working with different size bits? Ie: and 8 bit photo vs 16 bit photo!
Always great 👍 helps out my game tremendously... keep em coming...
Loved this video

Yes the settings in the camera and the light setting .required ..can you give us the numbers .

Naaaaaas one!
Thank you a lot! Very clear explanation... help me a lot
Thanks, Mark and Fanny. Excellent results!
I found that this form of retouching also works well on car bodywork to remove reflections and minor dings

thanks for properly explaining this technique very useful
Great Mark
Happy Christmas mark
I have to try this from now on
Very useful tips. Thanks for posting :)
Hello, you're working on a 16 bits image, so when you apply image settings are Add, invert, 0, 128 🤗
oh. I am waiting for your talking about Frequency S. Amazing.
You're working in 16-bit; shouldn't you set Apply Image to Invert, Add, and Offset 0?
Thank you, Marc!!
the blend mode for the clone stamp is it on normal?
Would you do the frequency separation first on PS and then export it to LR for rest of post process?
it is very useful,thank you!
Thank you!
that was a wonderful video according to you. Looks easy too!
Merry Christmas

I have a lifelong feud going on with Photoshop. I DO NOT get on with it at all.
Where does he explain how to blend it ..? I’m listening but I’m missing it somehow
You da man!!! Lol! Thank you so much Mark!
I think it will be helpful for us
When you make your selection, how do you paste it to the new area of skin? That's where I got lost. Help me, please!
Alt to select the sample, click to paste it.
Yeah I love freq sep but every pro retoucher says it is a big no no method because it is destructive. So what is the thruth?

There is a bug in the latest versions. Do a google to find out more.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thought I was watching Gavin Hoey for a minute with that intro..
What about skin pores?
this is interesting.

Is "preview" checked in the filter dialogue? Also, make sure you've selected the correct layer. Let me know if that helps.

I'm bleeding from my eyes. This is aweful.
First one to like and comment😁😁
And here am I using healing brush tool.. fml
sorry, scale 2 and output 0

Uuum No.
You don't need to understand Why, just do what I Say 🤯🤯
Oy!

Please tell me you don’t think that looks good? Looks like artificial texture

Really not great. The skin should still look like skin. Worked in the industry for 13years and no one I know in any studio would use this technique.

He did say several times he was overdoing it for the sake of the video. 13 years and still not paying attention? 😛
Autoturk- can you share a link to your work and technique used since you are claiming to better know how to get best results. Thanks
this edit is ver bad bro
This is probably one of the more worst ways to smooth skin. If you're going for that look, you're better off using Portraiture.
