Hi everyone! What do you think of a pre-order system? It means that you place your order (in the size you want), then we go into production and deliver your garments to you first. It allows me to better plan all sizes and avoid being out-of-stock too soon for some sizes (which happened last time) - but you’d have to be patient: is it OK to wait a few weeks before getting your garments? How long is OK, how long is too long?... Thanks for your opinions & comments: some of you watching this are also customers, so I want to get this one right!

I think it's a great idea. It makes it slightly less like laying a bet when you go into production. I have waited weeks for clothes from Israel before. I think the key is just letting people know what to expect. ☺

I think it's a great idea to offer pre-orders, not just to to give you an idea of numbers but also to bring your buyers along and make us feel like investors. We’ve already been invited into your process with these videos, so pre ordering is just the next step towards us owning one of these pieces that we are watching come to life.

I think preordering is fine as long as you set a date of shipment and keep to that. It's not the having to wait, but the not knowing when you'll get it upfront that I think is the biggest problem with pre orders.

Considering your brand is already in a niche section of fashion, catering to customers that are already more conscious of slow fashion an ethical fashion, the delay they experience due to pre-ordering will only make their purchase more valuable, because they will realise that this process also makes it easier to not over produce anything you offer. It can be marketed as a strategic decision in your aim for ethically made clothing too.

I would be happy to preorder and wait for my items. I think your channel attracts a lot of people interested in quality and minimalism, and as those populations are more likely to invest in long-term pieces to add to their wardrobe... a few extra months will not be a major problem in my opinion. Pre-odering will also allow people who have more limited budgets to plan their finances in order to afford the items they desire. I don't personally wear XL or XXL, but I think many women would be thrilled to have access to the pieces you create so I think it's a great idea!

Justine! I missed your videos so much the past couple of weeks! Welcome back ;).
I feel like pre-ordering makes so much sense coming from the perspective of you as a small business.... however that waiting period is something that most customers today simply aren't used to because we're so accustomed to fast fashion! Perhaps it is a good system if enough of your customers understand the necessary process to create ethical garments :)?

Hi Justine, I really like your idea of pre-ordering the items if it is feasible in your process. In my experience as a customer, many fashion stores tend to order mainly "medium" sizes and very few garments in small and large sizes, which does not reflect the actual demand. A waiting time of 4 weeks seems fine to me. Good luck with your new collection!

Hi Justine! Thank you for taking us through the process. While I do not work in the industry, it has always been one of my Loves. I know that if you are considering North America as one of your markets, particularly USA and major cities in Canada, you may see a positive response to L, XL & XXL; I feel that there is never enough of it. I remember going to NYC in the fashion district and there were 3 stores I went into that had huge handwritten signs that said "WE have absolutely No L or XL left; none". I never forgot that lol. Also, the way that a lot of the store sizes are built, depends and while some individuals may be a size medium, wearing a large fits better. I think the pre-order is an excellent way to gauge your market! Thanks again!

I think a pre-order system is a briliant idea. In my opinion, there's nothing worse than waiting for something and then not being able to get it because it sold out too quickly.
Also, in times of kickstarter and the like people are more used to wait for their purchases, especially if they helped to make it work in the first place. Sewing myself, I would be fine waiting up to 4 months, but I think that's the upper end of tolerable time range. 2 to 3 months are definitely fine.
I'm looking very much forward to your next video and the final results! Thank you so much for sharing all of this :)

I think it is more helpful for us who never really cared about fashion, because when we do get clothes we are informed buyers, and we get the most out of our time and money
I used also look at many details before purchasing a garment, before I started following Justine. Just because I hate shopping and I always found it an exasperating experience *smh*

Merci, Justine! It’s really interesting to see the design-to-production process & to learn about some of the many decisions involved every step of the way. The fabrics & colors you’ve chosen are beautiful. Offering preorders is a great idea because it should give you a better sense of demand for each size, plus it gives your fans the opportunity to help support you as you bring your new line into the world. I’ve done preorders before, & it’s well worth the wait in support of a brand/designer I believe in. A few weeks is just fine. How long is too long? Seems like 3 months might be pushing it for garments because the season would be changing, plus those who preordered could gain or lose weight in that length of time. That’s just a guess, though.

Having grown up in the 80's, waiting a month for a piece does not seem excessively long to me! I remember receiving a catalog in the mail, filling out a paper order form, sending /that/ back in the mail with a check, then waiting for the clothes to arrive also via the postal service. It was very common to wait at least a week or more, and items were sometimes on backorder.
I am so excited to view your finished collection! Having watched your videos, I trust your construction methods and choice of materials. I would have no problem waiting on a preorder!

    I love it!!!
I definitely think a pre order is important and you want to actually get people to pay. Ive taken business classes (and so have you haha much more than me) and they repeatedly mention that people don't always buy what they say they'll buy. You kinda need money from them to confirm they're serious (and your work is SO worth paying a preorder for. You can ask and people will happily pay!)
Video idea (for after you take a vacation after the collection production craziness. Haha ): Knitted fashion!
There isn't too much talk about knitwear design and production in the modern fashion world that I've seen. I knit my own clothing and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on design of knitwear (haha I'd personally love a whole video series on it but I'm admittedly a knitwear addict haha). Your thoughts on yarn choices, what colors are best with what texture, cable options, lace options , ribbing or no ribbing, how yarn and fabric weight should direct your design choices etc. How does machine knitwear production and design work?
Maybe also a video on easy at-home tailoring or a video about going to the tailor (what vocabulary do you need, what are the tailoring options? Do tailors also do alterations like rip out a dress panel in pink and replace with blue)?
Like I'll take in the waist or hem stuff at home. It helps make peices look so much better. Definitely something you'd have fantastic pro perspective on.
Love your work! It looks stressful and uncertain but you got this! Your commitment to produce locally is phenomenal. You're awesome!

I think adding larger sizes is a good idea if you're selling internationally, especially here in the US. I wear a 12/14 US sizes, and am 5'10" so it's difficult to find clothes that fit especially in length. When I went to your website for the last collection you made, I loved that skirt that tied on the side, and those pants too.. and would have bought it, if my size/length (34 inseam) was available. Pre order is a great idea! Looking at fashion designers runway shows, I understand a ton of work goes into the entire process of creating a fashion line; it's interesting to actually see it happen. I look forward to seeing more of this series! Your channel is definitely unique here on You Tube! Love it!

I have no problem with pre-ordering. I like to take time to plan my wardrobe purchases so I get them just right. Waiting isn’t an issue for me. I’m really looking forward to your new collection! You look like you’re having a lot of fun, despite the stress.

What a lovely and informative video post Justine!! 💛🧡💜 I am learning so much from your YT channel, and the workload you're taking on both from designing/producing your next collection as well the effort you're putting into documenting the process (with great production value as well). I hope this video series gets lots of views to make it worth the hours you're dedicating to it :) Absolutely yes to pre-order!! People buy flights and concert tickets, sometimes up to a year in advance, so I think it's a great idea (not too dissimilar to supporters who fund projects on Kickstarter, Kiva to help boost small businesses etc). Something that would be good for your customers to know is what is a reasonable time to expect for the production so the garments are not rushed. As a consumer, I could say waiting 5-8 weeks would be on the maximum end of the scale, but if you needed more time then your fans would understand and be supportive 😍😍 Can't wait to see what your next clothing and jewellery lines will look like.
Would you consider in the future to allow your followers to perhaps vote on designs you've created to go into production? That could be fun!!

When you started talking about the problem of ordering all your inventory ahead of time, I wondered if you could do a pre-order period. I think it's a great idea!

This video was fantastic. I absolutely loved it because it shows how the rubber hits the road and can’t wait for the next one. Preorder system seems like a good idea. I would also recommend a study of the geography you are trying to target as your main market and see what the typical size distribution looks like there.

Dear Justine, I would love a pre-order system and the availability of larger sizes since I often fall somewhere between L and XL. I don't mind waiting if the time-schedule is somewhat known. Kickstarter is an example of where you may have to wait for up to a year for your product, but it is quite clear approximately when you may expect to receive the product. A few weeks of wait should be ok, it makes less of a financial gamble for you. Looking forward to seeing your new designs. Good luck!

I have enjoyed your videos and have learned so much! I’ve been waiting to see if you would expand your size range. Being plus size there is a dearth of clothing that is well proportioned and constructed. Your pieces have a timeless feel that can carry through the seasons so waiting for a pre-order is not such a big deal, as long as an expected due date is given. Adding the larger sizes listed will definitely boost your US business! I wish you great success in whichever way you decide to go!

Hello Justine. It was exiting to share a part of your passion's process with you. Pleasant to see you happy. I've enjoyed many of your videos you have taught me I have neutral skint tone, which colors go well with each other and about what the eye is drawn to for distraction/proportion. I enjoy your videos and vlogs much. A big Congrats to you ...and thank you for sharing. thank

Hi Justine, I'm really enjoying this series. It's fascinating seeing all the work that you do. Having to pay for everything upfront is scary, I hope it all works out. Two weeks seems reasonable to wait for an order.

I am so happy that you are doing this production series - I find it fascinating! As someone who would probably be your XXL (I'm in the US), I think that something that would be very helpful is if you made prototypes of each size, and showed real-sized models in each piece as a sort of prelude to the pre-order phase. This comes to mind because as you are describing your pieces as having a lot of gathers, I wonder if a larger-sized body type would find them flattering or not. Just as you've done so many videos explaining to us which types of fashions are flattering for which body shapes or even plus-sized gals etc, I'm sure that some of your designs would flatter some shapes/sizes more than others. And so having an actual visual of how the garments would lie on each sized/shaped woman would be sooooo helpful to us customers to determine if we would order or not. There is a site called The Garment out of Canada that does ethical fashions from many different vendors. They will often show prototypes of the individual garments on "real world" models and get feedback (via instagram) on interest before committing to ordering a certain number of items, just to get a feel for numbers and sizes. It's very helpful for both the client and the vendor.
And a question for you about the business side of things (since I am a former business owner and had to do business and financial planning)... where does your initial cash come from, given that you have to pay so much up front? Do you go to a bank with a business plan and ask for a loan? Or do you actually use your own personal savings? I hope that's not too personal of a question. It's just that here in the US we usually try to convince a bank or investor, etc., to front the money and agree to be paid back over time - easing the immediate financial strain!

Justine, you are a very creative, brave/strong and positive soul. Kudos to you!
YES!! I DO think a pre-order system is a GREAT idea. I have ordered clothing from Elizabeth Suzann here in the states that can take 4-8 weeks to receive. I know the items are worth waiting for, so I do not mind. I think you SHOULD try a pre-order system. Best Wishes!

I LOVE the preorder idea! I don’t buy every type of garment every season. This season I need sweaters and wool pants. Next season I may only need tees and a few skirts. Preordering would help me be more conscientious about what I need and if I’m buying ahead of time for an upcoming season waiting is not a problem.
