  • This video is a milestone in my career as a fashion designer: we have been documenting the development of the new collection 2018 since the beginning, and today you're seeing the first episode!
It covers the creative process: inspiration, mind map, visual research, sketching and turning ideas into something more concrete.
For this collection, since it feels quite organic in terms of concept, I started all sides of the project simultaneously: creative part, fabric sourcing, cost calculation, production planning, etc.
Disclaimer: I'm not there yet. At all. So everything you hear here might still change completely. We will see ;-)
Thumbs up if you liked this video :-)
If you subscribe to this channel and click on the bell, you will be notified when a new video goes live!
    New videos: Wednesday 4pm & Sunday 12pm (Paris/Berlin time).
    Take care!
    Justine

Fabulous to see all the hard work that goes into the creation of fashion and so amazing to see how to gather inspirations from travel, nature, textures and every day life all around us! So much mindfulness that is transpired in this video. Love it!!
I'd love to learn if and/or how you embed your thoughts on sustainability in sourcing your materials, and lasting of the garments you are creating. Best wishes for your creative process! Cannot wait to see the results

I really like this concept, and this kind of video, when you learn something and how to get in touch with the things that surrounded us in this world. Actually, I am a fashion editor for a luxury magazine and my fashion pages are not like your typical fashion magazine when you just display products, I always go deeper on my concepts, learn when things come from and educate the readers so they can get inspired when shopping or getting dressed. Thank you Justine, for educating us on these journeys, they are far from empty, they full of surprises and I can tell you I get inspired every time I watch your videos. Can't wait to see Episode 2!

I know that this collection will be brilliant! Knowing how it will feel before knowing how it will look well that's whole of it right? I mean isn't that what it's all about? My clothes should make me feel good, bring joy and contentment. It's kind of like people. You meet someone for the first time and they look a certain way but as you get to know them and understand them you begin to see them in a whole new light. I think it's the same with this collection. You see it in your mind and it looks a certain way but as you get to know it and understand it and see the beauty of it well then it has no choice but to become something truly amazing! I look forward to the next video and the one after that! Watching this unfold is going to be something to behold! Take care Justine and see you soon!!

Thanks for sharing this ‚behind the scenes‘ video! Very interesting to see, how you approach the whole creativity aspect and then the practical issues of making the designs come real. I think the necessity of having to be able to multitask on such a high level, scares many people away from trying to make money in a creative field (or causes them to fail....)

Exciting series. This episode felt like a trailer for the collection. There were documented sections without sound, which wasn't clear about what's happening in those scenes. The voiceover felt like only a trailer. Hope next episodes are more inclusive of the documentation with sounds and dialogues. Love x

This is so fascinating. I love it. I only want to design and sew my own wardrobe and that is daunting enough! So, once your collection has been produced and sold, do you just go on to create a new collection and abandon designs from the previous collection, or will you continue to produce and market the items from an earlier collection if there is a demand for them?

    Justine,
I have enjoyed your videos since their inception, and keenly await each Sunday for the newest installment. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to your global RUclips community. Your intersection of professional skill and knowledge with thorough research, distinction between fact and opinion (not easy in design), honesty and curiosity in every endeavour, and courage when bushwacking through the new and uncertain (as detailed in this video) has created guidance of exceptional quality, clarity, and poignancy. I know I speak for many when I say you empower us to understand how to navigate fashion - how to make it work for our bodies and psyches, and how to even hack it for social impact. This has profound influence on our physical and psychological wellbeing: I hope you know how appreciated you are. Wishing you well as you navigate this new project, and a particular thank you for the courage to share your experiences as honestly as you do, especially in the wake of uncertainty. Came across the word "Frauenpower." Shall we say, "here's to 'Justinepower'"?!

I love how you take a structured approach even to very creative projects! I am a Japanese company member, and really appreciate your work style (in addition to wabi-sabi) how you do not work chaotically like many artists do, but on the contrary-you plan, and you do everything step by step. p.s. now I know the reason behind your "random" videos in the past about Matera, then your shopping trip at Berlin school which was closing etc. so in reality it was part of your new collection journey! good luck in the process! :)

Very interesting how what your construction teacher said about leaving your work aside when you have a problem, is exactly what my first computer science teacher said about programming. Because when you're programming sometimes you get stuck and solving one problem creates 10 more problems etc, and just going for a run and forgetting about the program sometimes helps to come up with a clean and elegant solution.
Never thought computer science and fashion design had something in common!

Justine you should be named as *the fashion designer of the real people* 😍: thanks to you we understand so much more about your job as a fashion designer and I even see you like an artist! This is so real and down-to-earth, unlike the high fashion where designers talk in a language that most of the people don't understand and can't even associate with. Thanks so much Justine 😘🌟🏆

Great video, lovely series. Consumers often forget how much goes into a process of making something that looks simple. Will look forward to seeing your collection.

Justine, I wanted to thank you greatly for your educational work. I was pretty good at buying things that I never wear. Especially after moving to a tropical country where stores are filled with clothing of bright and quite large prints of tropical flowers and parrots on it. I can't wear such clothes desighned for people with more contradt then a eastern european would naturally have. I would go to a more expencive store hoping it would fix my problem. But no. So I end up wearing denim shorts and a t shirt everywhere. No I shop with a plan in mind. No I can dress for less and everything is usable and better quality since I know where to look). Thank you so much!

ulianaeme - I do the same now. I still love some of the more colored, patterned clothing I find in my new tropical climate, sometimes thinking that would never be possible in Germany without being considered nuts😂, but am 10 x more aware of what I buy, the materials, country of origin, that I can use that item in several ways, etc. Also thrift shopping of good quality items has become a favorite in recent years 😅.

I've heard that in Japan, they've been trimming broken dishes by filling in the broken gaps with gold! So not only is imperfection not bad at all, but it actually is a sign of beauty and value.

This new serie is a very good idea even though it looks like it's demanding a lot of work! Congratulations for your new collection, looking forward to it!
I want you to know that even if I don't work in visual arts at all, you talking about creative process etc. has helped a lot with my own blockers. You make it clear and simple, almost effortless, and I really appreciate that.

Merci, Justine! I love following along with you in your creative process. Tying wabi-sabi to visual evidence of the eternal dialogue between nature & the built environment is a fertile inspiration for your new collection. It's thrilling to see your method, & the fact that you're overseeing the entire production process yourself is staggering. You must be overwhelmed much of the time! Through it all, though, you appear to be maintaining your joy, grace, & sense of humor. It's obvious that you love your work. Looking forward to the next episode!
