Development and pattern phase - episode 2 ǀ

  • The creative process of Project Racine continues! My next collection is now going into the pattern-making phase, I am choosing fabrics and colors, the timing is getting tighter.
    I hope you will enjoy seeing more of what happens behind the scenes of the fashion industry, when developing a fashion collection. One thing I have learnt since starting out as a fashion designer: it is SO MUCH MORE work than what people usually think! I hope that this video series shows that aspect - but also how creative and "free" the process nonetheless is.
    What do you think of the idea of a pre-order period?
    It would mean that you wait a couple of weeks between ordering and receiving your garments. But it guarantees that you will get your size (and that you'll get it as soon as the collection is out!).
    Opinions? Objections? Suggestions?
    Thank you!
    Thumbs up if you liked this video :-)

    Hi everyone! What do you think of a pre-order system? It means that you place your order (in the size you want), then we go into production and deliver your garments to you first. It allows me to better plan all sizes and avoid being out-of-stock too soon for some sizes (which happened last time) - but you’d have to be patient: is it OK to wait a few weeks before getting your garments? How long is OK, how long is too long?... Thanks for your opinions & comments: some of you watching this are also customers, so I want to get this one right!

      I think it's a great idea. It makes it slightly less like laying a bet when you go into production. I have waited weeks for clothes from Israel before. I think the key is just letting people know what to expect. ☺

    I think it's a great idea to offer pre-orders, not just to to give you an idea of numbers but also to bring your buyers along and make us feel like investors. We’ve already been invited into your process with these videos, so pre ordering is just the next step towards us owning one of these pieces that we are watching come to life.

    Wow, congratulations Justine! From what I saw this collection will be a great success. Considering the size of your company, I think it's a very smart idea to have some kind of pre-sell before deciding on the final quantities. I'm looking forward to the next episode, very exciting! :)

    Thank you for this series, it's really fascinating to watch - both how the fashion industry works and the business project part of it. Personally I think pre-orders are a good idea, I would like the option to do that) From a more practical point of view I also think it's a good idea. Firstly, crowdfunding model (and pre-orders are a bit like that) is popular and well-known right now and usually well-received from creators like you. Secondly, as you said, it could be a good way to gauge the market and have a certain amount of sales guaranteed. Also I think it would be really interesting to see how the pre-order curve for sizes is different from sales curve after the launch.

      Considering your brand is already in a niche section of fashion, catering to customers that are already more conscious of slow fashion an ethical fashion, the delay they experience due to pre-ordering will only make their purchase more valuable, because they will realise that this process also makes it easier to not over produce anything you offer. It can be marketed as a strategic decision in your aim for ethically made clothing too.

I think your channel attracts a lot of people interested in quality and minimalism, and as those populations are more likely to invest in long-term pieces to add to their wardrobe... a few extra months will not be a major problem in my opinion. Pre-odering will also allow people who have more limited budgets to plan their finances in order to afford the items they desire. I don't personally wear XL or XXL, but I think many women would be thrilled to have access to the pieces you create so I think it's a great idea!

    I think a pre-order system is a briliant idea. In my opinion, there's nothing worse than waiting for something and then not being able to get it because it sold out too quickly.
    Also, in times of kickstarter and the like people are more used to wait for their purchases, especially if they helped to make it work in the first place. Sewing myself, I would be fine waiting up to 4 months, but I think that's the upper end of tolerable time range. 2 to 3 months are definitely fine.
    I'm looking very much forward to your next video and the final results! Thank you so much for sharing all of this :)

    Hi Justine, I really like your idea of pre-ordering the items if it is feasible in your process. In my experience as a customer, many fashion stores tend to order mainly "medium" sizes and very few garments in small and large sizes, which does not reflect the actual demand. A waiting time of 4 weeks seems fine to me. Good luck with your new collection!

    Merci, Justine! It’s really interesting to see the design-to-production process & to learn about some of the many decisions involved every step of the way. The fabrics & colors you’ve chosen are beautiful. Offering preorders is a great idea because it should give you a better sense of demand for each size, plus it gives your fans the opportunity to help support you as you bring your new line into the world. I’ve done preorders before, & it’s well worth the wait in support of a brand/designer I believe in. A few weeks is just fine. How long is too long? Seems like 3 months might be pushing it for garments because the season would be changing, plus those who preordered could gain or lose weight in that length of time. That’s just a guess, though.

    Hi Justine! Thank you for taking us through the process. While I do not work in the industry, it has always been one of my Loves. I know that if you are considering North America as one of your markets, particularly USA and major cities in Canada, you may see a positive response to L, XL & XXL; I feel that there is never enough of it. I remember going to NYC in the fashion district and there were 3 stores I went into that had huge handwritten signs that said "WE have absolutely No L or XL left; none". I never forgot that lol. Also, the way that a lot of the store sizes are built, depends and while some individuals may be a size medium, wearing a large fits better. I think the pre-order is an excellent way to gauge your market! Thanks again!

  • @Sarahnotsayruh
    @Sarahnotsayruh 6 лет назад +1

    Please do include XL and XXL! The average size in the states is a US 14/16, which I think is a UK 16/18. So few designers go above a 12/14, I think it would definitely help you stand out! You could reach out the12ishstyle on Instagram and #makemysize; I'm sure she would consider giving you a shout out for expanding your sizing!
    And personally, I would love it bc I have no idea where to begin for buying plus size, ethically made fashion!

    Pre-order is a brilliant idea. You might be able to crowd source the next collection if this one goes as well as expected. XL and XXL are trickier to size. At a certain point the curves have to be redesigned. The patterns can’t just be increased in overall proportions or they no longer conform to real women’s bodies. If you crowd sourced a collection for women over 50 it would be a huge contribution to the market. Best of luck.

    @Jemima1377 6 лет назад +1

    If I had to take a guess, I'd say: order at least as much of the XL and XXL as you do of other clothing sizes - if not more.
    Costumers of bigger sizes are used to - having to spend a bit more and - having to plan ahead to receive a piece (or waiting for a preordered piece for a couple of weeks) already. There are more people in plus sizes than you think. And we're searching for good quality staple pieces that are more than just upsized mindlessly. If you make them fit well (don't just assume a person who has wider hips HAS to be a giant in every direction as well and make them all floor-length - I know you wont), they'll be sold out VERY fast. You can quote me on that. I'd be up for a bet on that... ^_~

    Every sale rack I see is loaded with small sizes and few, if any, large sizes. As an xxl, I'm used to seeing my size selling out first. I think the biggest hurdle is reaching larger sizes to let them know. I ignore designers because I assume I'm not included. They aren't in my radar at all.
    I see no problem waiting and think of it more like a kickstarter. The big thing is returns since fit is a huge issue with larger sizes.
    I think it would be wonderful to put out a line in 3 main body shapes, but probably a nightmare for you. Sigh. Everything is about the fit.

    I love it!!!
    I definitely think a pre order is important and you want to actually get people to pay. Ive taken business classes (and so have you haha much more than me) and they repeatedly mention that people don't always buy what they say they'll buy. You kinda need money from them to confirm they're serious (and your work is SO worth paying a preorder for. You can ask and people will happily pay!)
    Video idea (for after you take a vacation after the collection production craziness. Haha ): Knitted fashion!
    There isn't too much talk about knitwear design and production in the modern fashion world that I've seen. I knit my own clothing and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on design of knitwear (haha I'd personally love a whole video series on it but I'm admittedly a knitwear addict haha). Your thoughts on yarn choices, what colors are best with what texture, cable options, lace options , ribbing or no ribbing, how yarn and fabric weight should direct your design choices etc. How does machine knitwear production and design work?
    Maybe also a video on easy at-home tailoring or a video about going to the tailor (what vocabulary do you need, what are the tailoring options? Do tailors also do alterations like rip out a dress panel in pink and replace with blue)?
    Like I'll take in the waist or hem stuff at home. It helps make peices look so much better. Definitely something you'd have fantastic pro perspective on.
    Love your work! It looks stressful and uncertain but you got this! Your commitment to produce locally is phenomenal. You're awesome!

    This series is interesting for me but perhaps for a different reason. I am a size small or extra small petite. It has been very frustrating to find wonderful clothing only to learn that the styles are not available in petite sizes. I believe I understand why, now. There just don't seem to be enough of us to make it profitable for the market.

  • @beingWantable
    @beingWantable 6 лет назад +5

    It really depends on your customers. If you had many people buy "L" but some returned it back because it was to small (if you added that question for returns at least). Then you can guess how many XL you need. If you had more XS than L than your customers are probably thinner/smaller.
    When I worked in a store and also when I shop, XL is always leftover so having only a few is fine.
    It also depends on your sizing. For Europeans XL is big but for the US it's not. So maybe if you had a lot of US customers and they saw that you didn't have XL that maybe means they didn't want to try the L being scared it's too small.

    • @matematicarka
      @matematicarka 5 лет назад +1

      You had XL leftover ? :O I can almost never find it!!! :'(
      But Justine has a size chart on her web shop, so there is no being scared about if it will fit
      Though I do know the fear, I ordered the same T-shirt for my mom and me, only different sizes, hers was M and mine was XL, and there was less than an inch of difference in width. I may not be an expert, but that difference in two sizes apart is way to small

    Regarding bigger sizes, the problem is the waist line, (see increase of obesity due to stress, environmental factors and processed food). Usually abdominal fat was a male problem, now it is gradually becoming very common in women too.
    Therefore the ratio waistline/hipline that is usually 0.7-0.75 is not adapted to those with weight problems as the ratio will be more around 0.85-0.95 (personal experience ;) and US data on average waistine in women).

    What a lovely and informative video post Justine!! 💛🧡💜 I am learning so much from your YT channel, and the workload you're taking on both from designing/producing your next collection as well the effort you're putting into documenting the process (with great production value as well). I hope this video series gets lots of views to make it worth the hours you're dedicating to it :) Absolutely yes to pre-order!! People buy flights and concert tickets, sometimes up to a year in advance, so I think it's a great idea (not too dissimilar to supporters who fund projects on Kickstarter, Kiva to help boost small businesses etc). Something that would be good for your customers to know is what is a reasonable time to expect for the production so the garments are not rushed. As a consumer, I could say waiting 5-8 weeks would be on the maximum end of the scale, but if you needed more time then your fans would understand and be supportive 😍😍 Can't wait to see what your next clothing and jewellery lines will look like.
    Would you consider in the future to allow your followers to perhaps vote on designs you've created to go into production? That could be fun!!

    I think adding larger sizes is a good idea if you're selling internationally, especially here in the US. I wear a 12/14 US sizes, and am 5'10" so it's difficult to find clothes that fit especially in length. When I went to your website for the last collection you made, I loved that skirt that tied on the side, and those pants too.. and would have bought it, if my size/length (34 inseam) was available. Pre order is a great idea! Looking at fashion designers runway shows, I understand a ton of work goes into the entire process of creating a fashion line; it's interesting to actually see it happen. I look forward to seeing more of this series! Your channel is definitely unique here on You Tube! Love it!

    Dear Justine, I would love a pre-order system and the availability of larger sizes since I often fall somewhere between L and XL. I don't mind waiting if the time-schedule is somewhat known. Kickstarter is an example of where you may have to wait for up to a year for your product, but it is quite clear approximately when you may expect to receive the product. A few weeks of wait should be ok, it makes less of a financial gamble for you. Looking forward to seeing your new designs. Good luck!

    One quick question, Justine, when you have the time would you mind making a video about buying jewelry? I’d like to buy a good quality piece but seems like things nowadays are either super cheap with cheap metal or super luxurious. I’d like to be more educated on this matter. And your jewelry collection is very cute too!

    1. It will be like the pre-order, but you can start collecting information before the product has been realised.
    2. Also they will get notification at each stage of the project if you choose to give.

    I am so very excited you are making bigger sizes now!!! And we know you, so we know you'll do well on recompiling the patterns, and not just scale them ... I have things in my closet from M to XXL, and they all fit the same (recently bought and xl t-shirt for me and the same in M for my mom, the difference in the width of shoulders was only 2 cm total... Now I know I'm not the expert, but that can't be right, can it?)
    I would wait for a whole season or even more for classic pieces e.g. a black or white shirt, thshirt, blouse. I rarely buy clothes in general, precisely because it takes me a long time to decide where to get something, and when I buy it, I use it up until the end
    If I am buying something, I want it to last as much as possible
    I actually have t-shirts from more than 4 years ago. Had to resize them when I lost some weight, but otherwise they're as good as new, so worth every cent!

    Hi Justine - love what you have shared so far! A preorder is great idea - can you elaborate/clarify what your sizes are in measurements ( and where on the body exactly is being measured). I'm in the US and our sizes run different from one designer/mfr to the next so details are a necessity. If you are polling sizes I'm guessing that my usual US size for top 12 and bottom 14 may be XL or more in your sizes.
