I made this today but instead of the Penne Pasta I used Spaghetti and I also didn't use any cheese to cut down on the calories as well as the salt since my father can't eat too much salt. Everyone loved it. ESPECIALLY my father. He thanked me many times for making something delicious as well as edible for him. I really like to make my dad happy. It makes me feel favorable :). Thank you so much for your help.

I also made this with a regular canned tuna shreds in oil and used Spirali-pasta instead of Penne, but it came out just great! So easy, so cheap and yet so appealing and satisfying meal. Recommended for everyone who likes "fast food" and wants somethin more healthy than pickin' it up from McDonalds' drive-thru... or just want to serve a satisfying meal for the whole family...

Chef John! Thank you very much for this recipe. I'm a broke student and this recipe is cheap and delicious!!! I used non-fancy tuna in olive oil and added oregano to it which cost me $3 for 3 little tins, pasta $1.99, tomato soup $6 (a good one too!) and found a small cut of reggiano for $5 and used about half of that. the rest is pantry stuff and so it only cost me $13 for a HUGE pot!!! and plus, it tastes really good with stale day old garlic bread too!! thank you so much again! Amazing!

Not sure if Chef John will approve but I made this in the instant pot the other day. Very easy just dumped everything in except the cheese and set it for 5 minutes. Did a quick release at the end, added the cheese and put the top back on for 3 minutes for the cheese to melt. It turned out very good.

I don't trust pregrated parmigiano. There were lawsuits with some of the big names like Kraft who were found to add weight to their product with wood pulp. That's right, sawdust. Their products were found to contain up to like 15% or so wood pulp (for some of the worst offenders). It was a massive lawsuit that involved many different food processing companies. Since then, I don't trust overprocessed things because just because it's not on the label doesn't mean it couldn't be in there. I'm usually not so paranoid but the proof is there.
Also, whole pieces of cheese are far better than their pre-processed counterparts. Nothing beats fresh grated parmigiano.

    • @lucygirl4926

ANYTHING shredded has wood pulp added to it...I'm not sure why we're okay with that....

I made this and loved it. My whole family loved it. Brought a container over to the neighbors, they loved it...and when I told him it had tuna in it, he said, "I hate tuna, but I love this!" And I used a plain old can of white tuna because I couldn't find the Tonino. Now I found a local source for the Tonino, can't wait to make it again! Thank you Chef John.

In college days Gus' Pizza Palace in Whitewater Wisconsin use to bake up tuna pizza. We always ordered tuna, bacon and onions. It was sooo good!
When I tell people about it they cannot stand the idea of tuna on pizza.
Gus' later stopped making tuna pizza because the people living upstairs complained about the smell of the tuna.
They are still there, since 1961, and I still love their crispy thin crust and all fresh ingredients, but oh for the good old days of tuna, bacon and onions pizza!

    this is an outstanding recipe!!
not to insult anybody but i think you can use freshly grated 'grana padano' as a substitute for
the parmesan cheese (not the same, but close, if you're on a budget, in my opinion)
please try it and you will receive a flavor explosion!

Like I said in the the video, taste for salt and pepper. If you don't use anchovy you'll have to add more salt. This goes for ALL my recipes. If you leave out spicy or salty ingredients, you'll have to adjust to your tastes. It's your food, season any way you want! By the way, 99.5% people that say they don't like anchovies would eat this pasta and have NO idea they were in there. Something to think about.
