One Year Post Thyroidectomy | Thyroid Cancer Journey

  • WOW I can not believe it has been a year already !!! I feel like I am forgetting to mention some things so please feel free to ask tany questions below. This past year post thyroidectomy has been quite a rollercoaster. Some days I totally forget I have this going on and I start to feel normal. Other days I feel like the inner sadness, exhaustion and muscle twitches will never end. Yea I complain about it here and there to my friends, family and coworkers but in general I just ignore the uncomfortableness ( knowing that they aren't serious symptoms for me) and go on with my day. Life goes on, I (we) need to keep pushing on and striving to find ourselves and our happiness once again.
Let me know if you guys are curious to see a video once I do my total body scan in March. This is when we will truly find out if I am officially cancer free!

I absolutely ADORE your attitude! While my thyroid cancer was caught in it's earliest stages 21 years ago, I am now going through the journey again with my 34 yo son. He's five weeks out of surgery and will be going through the radioiodine treatment in a few weeks. Your videos have been a God send for knowing what to expect, so that when he feels something, he'll know that's the way it's supposed to be because you shared your journey with us. Thank you so much! You are a beautiful and kind young lady!

Your videos have been so encouraging through my own thyroid cancer journey! I’m only 26 and it’s encouraging to know there is someone going through a similar situation. I just got diagnosed in July with stage one papillary thyroid cancer and had a total thyroidectomy and am still struggling to feel better. I have to take a lot of calcium every day. I’m severely hypothyroid and have gained weight and can definitely tell and it’s very discouraging...This video helps me see that over time things get better! Thanks for sharing your story! 😁😊

Hey thank you so much for responding! Now that I’m about 6 weeks post op I’ve been a lot more sluggish feeling. My appetite is off some days and large on other days. My bowels are more rapid some days, some days it’s not. I’ve been having stomach issues. Which I’m not sure are correlated to my thyroid surgery but I’m sure it is. Im more cold than ever! Lol. After doing blood work it turns out I’m now iron deficient. I guess my body is still trying to get used to things. I got freaked out by all of these symptoms and thought I was the only one :( can you share some of your symptoms you experienced after surgery?

Just want to say thank you again for making these videos. I am a few months behind you in my journey. When I was first told I might have cancer I thought my life was over. I looked around and found your videos and watched them, ever since then I've been following you and you've been a massive inspiration for me. I'm so pleased that hopefully, you'll only have to make the one more video about this subject, and at the end you can say you are cancer free. I've got my RAI follow up appointment in Feb and I'll have a Whole Body Scan later in the year. All the best.

Hi Christy, glad you are doing well and getting the meds balanced. I suffered with Hypothyroidism after my completion TSH was 58.3 ( 0.5 - 4 is the normal range ). It caused all the issues Michelle mentioned on the video. I've just started my 150 mcg Levothyroxine and all my symptoms are slowly going away. I eat a lot of fibre for breakfast and that helps everything. I've done a lot of research and Thyroid cancer is actually quite common. They think it's in at least 10% of the population but maybe closer to 15%. I've only just recently started to feel comfortable to make plans for the future again :/ ( I've added you on FB ). All the best

I've had hashimoto's disease for about 7 years now. I finally found an amazing endocrinologist and my last labs were perfect and I've been losing weight again. I know for me the hardest part was getting the medicine right. It's hard to explain to your friends and family how tired and exhausted you feel even after sleeping 10 hours. I hope your body scan shows you are cancer free.

As a thyroid patient (not cancer), the second I noticed your scar I thought "did she have a thyroidectomy?" so I searched your channel for this video. Your story is interesting and I'm glad you shared it! Healing from thyroid problems really takes a long time, it's not just a few weeks or a month long project. I know what you mean by the tiredness and the "off" feeling. I know this video is a year old but I'm subscribing.

Don't worry. In my case I had to do a total thyroidectomy with a block dissection on the neck to remove lymph nodes. The surgeons removed over 50 lymph nodes on the right of my neck, removed two thirds of the STM muscle and patched up my neck from the right ear to almost bottom left corner of the neck, and I still feel okay, my voice is great, I don't have swallowing problems. You'll be fine. It'll just pass. :) Waiting for my radio iodine therapy now.

Hi Michelle, I’ve have a thyroid nodule which was detected in 2014 thru an mri for a seperate issue. It’s been monitored since then and I’ve had a biopsy on it which was benign and it’s caused no symptoms. I’ve recently had covid a few back and now I feel like I’ve got a constant lump in my throat it’s uncomfortable when I lay down and it’s tender to touch but no pain. I’ve been back to doctors and I’m waiting on another ultrasound. Im scared it’s grown. Really good to see you doing so well. ❤

Wow! What a difference in your life from the video I just saw about an hour ago about your Nutrisystem journey in 2014 then seeing you 3 1/2 years later. I’m so sorry you had to go through this!
I remember you had mentioned in the 2014 video you had stopped taking thyroid medication and I wondered why.
I have been taking thyroid medication for several years now. I have all the fatigue symptoms because of hypothyroidism as well as having Fibromyalgia and more seriously, I have Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. So I’m in very poor shape.
It’s important for all women to have T3 & T4 blood testing done by your Primary Physician on a regular basis. Women in their 30’s & 40’s especially.
Keep eating healthy and stay positive. I wish you all the best.
Your voice does sound a lot closer to your 2014 videos. So that’s great.

My 24 year old daughter just finished her third bout of surgery. It's been a struggle since 2011. I would offer the following advice to those going through this:
Become an expert on this disease. Research the disease, treatments, etc.
If possible get under the care of a noted endocrinologist with extensive thyroid cancer experience.
Find a board certified endocrine surgeon who has hundreds or thousands of these surgeries under their belt. Really important because your life and it's quality going forward depends on it.
If you can treat through one of the renowned research hospitals like Sloan in NYC, UPENN in Phila, Mayo or Cleveland Clinic. The have highly specialized endo, surgeons and pathologists.
Your surgeon's skill level effects their ability to remove the highest amount of thyroid tissue safely and without damaging the recurrent laryngeal nerves, carotid artery, jugular vein and trachea, Thyroidectomies expose these vital structures to possible damage which cause major life altering changes. Without a doubt your nerve (s) were damaged or severed to have it effect your vocal chords. Also, you mentioned your parathyroids were effected. With two you should be having fine but I'd question what they're telling you about that since you're having parathyroidal effects.
I can reiterate enough to make sure you have a skilled and experienced endocrine surgeon and NOT some general surgeon or ENT surgeon.
I've watched many of these vlogs and feel so bad that people are making uneducated decisions or just listening to their medical team without doing their research.
My daughter had her first two bouts with a great team but when the third bout started we decided that we'd go to get a second opinion. We had already consulted with new Yorks Sloan Kettering and Cornell. We went to UPENN for her last surgery. Just to show you UPENN revealed that our first pathologists misdiagnosed the type of pappillary thyroid cancer my daughter had. There are several types and some have sub variants.
Go for 2nd opinions. Ask tough questions. Don't be afraid.
Hope this helps all you very brave and courageous people. God bless you all.

      @faithgutzman2326 4 года назад

I can attest to finding an endocrine surgeon and not a general or ENT surgeon. I am currently about to go into my third thyroid-cancer-related surgery and I finally am able to go with an experienced endocrine surgeon since the ENT surgeon left cancerous lymph nodes from the last time. Seriously, be adamant about this. It's important.

I 100% understand what your saying about being so tired that you felt heavy! I had so many & still have some days where I wake up feeling that way. I was diagnosed with papillary cancer in October of last year & had a total thyroidectomy at the end of January this year. For the most part I have felt better, but still I have days where I am exhausted! Strangely how you mentioned feeling weird in your body & not yourself, I feel like that sometimes & cannot explain it. It's odd... you sound good (voice wise)... I still can't yell or sing for a flip... some days I really get tired of sounding like a squeaky toy! I'm hoping & praying that it all comes back in time... yes, I wish I would have taken off of work longer than a week... anyway, thank you for sharing.

    • @mouseheadstudios
      @mouseheadstudios 6 лет назад +2

Most nodules end up being nothing. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry about it. I am getting an ultrasound in March as a checkup after having my thyroid removed due to cancer, and I am nervous too, but I try to keep myself and my mind busy. If you do have cancer, don't panic. Find a good surgeon and have faith all will be ok. It won't be easy, but once you get through to the other side, all that you went through will just make you stronger. But for right now just try not to worry. Whatever comes your way, you will be able to deal with it. I didn't think I could do it, and I honestly cried my way all the way through it from panic and fear, but after all is said and done, I am a stronger person and life continues on. Good luck, and I am sending good vibes your way that it's just a nodule and nothing else.

Mousehead Studios thank you!! My ultrasound results show 2 solid nodules so they want to do a needle biopsy. My bloodwork was in normal range. He told me odds are good I'm just in a fog right now. Dreamy fog... or nightmarish kinda fog 😂 thank you for your kind words

Mousehead Studios my ENT does all his patients surgeries I believe. I'd go with him. He's the one who found it when no one else cared about any of my symptoms.

Mousehead Studios I'm really trying to stay positive and not worry. It's hard. I'm the definition of worry wart. Have been since I was 3. Now all of a sudden I have to stay calm 😂😂😂😂

Hi Pamela, I Saw your post. I had 3 Nodules on my thyroid ( 2 on oneside, 1 on the other). I elected to have my thyroid completely removed without a biopsy.
I had my surgery just over a week ago. On Tuesday I was told the biopsy on my thyroid came back positive for cancer. I have elected to do the
radioactive iodine treatment. I will have Lab work done in 4-5 weeks and then I assume some time after start the treatment.
Please don’t be afraid, try and relax and stay positive for yourself and family. I know Im going to okay, I trust my Doctor’s.
Remember your not alone, there is a lot of people going thru or have gone thru this journey. Take care

Oh yeah, one question I do have is that my levothyroxine is giving me kind of a hard time. My skin has always been clear because of genetics. But since I’ve been on the medicine I’ve been breaking out with rash patches on my face, I’ve been EXTREMELY almost scarily tired and exhausted allllllllll the time. Is that normal?? Should I tell my doctor?? And also I find I’m restless at night... much love!!

It is normal, but you may want to talk to your doctor to see if they can do anything for you. I'm still dealing with feeling tired all the time, but I feel it's something I need to work around. Getting on a good diet and exercise might help with that. Good luck and I hope your doctor can help you find a way to deal with it.

It would be interesting to see a video on how to conceal a scar when desired. Like which types/colors of concealer, etc. With/without sunblock.

That may be a good idea. Honestly I haven't really cared to much to put the effort into trying to cover it but I could see how some may want to.

Yea I think it would be a very popular video. For folks with any type of scar. Arm, etc. For folks going to some special occasion, etc. I personally still get confused on the yellow/green thing LOL
