  • I figured that I should review this radio since I have owned it for over a year now.

Thanks for sharing Dennis, I'm envious of the switchable AGC and will eventually add that to my R1000's repertoire (essentially altering a capacitor value via switching)
    Merry Christmas!

Cause of your video I fell in love with this radio haha! Been wanting to get a shortwave receiver but after all of the somewhat bad reviews on the Grundig/Eton series I figured I'd look into something a bit vintage and out popped this video. But to answer your question after googling around I did find out why the R-5000 is rated slightly better and that's cause the sensitivity on the R-5000 is better at .25 microvolts vs the R-2000 which is rated at .4 microvolts(not that tremendous of a difference). Still the R-5000 is prone to the "dot problem" which causes dots in the frequency display to appear due to a bad type of glue I think? So beware if your gonna buy an R-5000, the problem is fixable, just remove the glue!

+Jerod Toma I'm glad that my video helped you. Also thanks for the information on the R-2000. I've decided that that if I do buy another digital radio in the future, it won't be the R-5000 but the JRC NRD-545.

Did you ever change the battery in the r-2000 ? Can you still use the radio if the battery died ?

Nice receiver ! What sort of antenna did you use for it ?

I can't quite remember for sure, but it either was a random wire antenna or a dipole.

I picked one up at a pawn shop with vhf converter for 50 bucks. Comparing it to my fav, the R-1000, I think the 1000 is slightly more sensitive.

Wow, you only paid $50? Is it in good condition?
I wouldn't mind owning a R-1000. It looks like a really nice radio.

@@Sparkyzilla85 It was DOA which I knew before I bought it but looked in excellent slight wear condition. Fuse blown, PSU filter cap leaked causing hum, a bad electrolytic on the PLL board was a dead short taxing the PSU & the voltage regulators, replaced both caps & plays great though still not happy with the unregulated PS which puts out about 15v under load & makes the Volt regs work too hard so I did the 12v mod so I can power it off my Astron. The PSU would be easy to regulate as there is lots of room to add parts.

The R5000 has more whistles and bangs, knobs, buttons and it's prettier! LOL
