  • Suddenly the band sounds a lot bigger than the players you have on stage. So how do you effectively mix in the pre-recorded tracks with the live instruments on stage?
Update: We’ve discontinued our t-shirt store! Thanks for being a Sound Ninja!

I work on a cruise ship as an audio tech we use multi tracks all the time for the broadway productions, mind you most of it is automated but it's fun.

Your illustration on 3 bass players failed to convince me that we don't need 3 James Attaways playing bass at the same time. It's all about the low end. ;)

Routed a multitrack through a channel that's usually set up for vocals with hpf and eq, but forgot to reset eq (bit of a chaotic service and practise). Low end was completely cut out up to maybe 400 (wondering what singer was on that channel before...) but actually that worked really well with the band on stage. Multitrack with a complete band on stage is nice for the little extra sounds but those shine through even (or maybe especially) when the track is setup to sound really thin.

Great vid man. Got a question, can I play multitracks connecting my Iphone (with a USB camera adapter) into the USB B port of the back of my PreSonus StudioLive 32S? So that it can act as a multichannel interface and have all my stems in different outputs routed via usb with my phone.
The PreSonus StudioLive 32S is running stagebox mode with a StudioLive32S running at stage via Ethernet

I haven't seen any documentation that IOs can interface with the StudioLive Series iii stuff directly.

2 questions: 1. When using multitracks and using an interface like playaudio12, do you treat the tracks as live instruments or no? ie: adding compression, eq, etc.... 2. when using multitracks all going thru 1 channel into the mixer, do you add compression, eq, etc.? Thanks

A lot of times they're already very processed and have very little dynamic range left, so sometimes I have to ride it up and down to get the movements to match the bigger dynamics of the band.

Thanks for this video! I play in a very small church, actually it’s just me as instrument (piano), so I do play the multitracks from Logic (I prefer it because how it looks honestly) and it’s going out from the 3.5mm jack port of my Mac, so I send all the tracks to left (summed) and the guide to the right.
Will I get any real advantage in terms of quality of the sound if I purchase a let’s say 4 channel interface in order to send the mix in their two respective channels and the guide in a third separate output?
Sometimes it’s really hard to make it sound ok with considering all multitracks have different eq. Any advices?
By the way it’s just me in the piano and 4 voices.

Yeah more channels will equal more control. And make sure you're adjusting levels of the backing tracks based on what it sounds like at FOH, not headphones.

    • @AttawayAudio

You mean digitally? Because you can always go analog out through an interface and to the console. Though I haven't tested it, you could use AVB, MADI, or AES50 and the appropriate USB interface

It's tricky, probably because the pitch shifting makes it sound different. There's just limitations for fitting things in context when they were made for the record.
